Reports of the demise of the American muscle car have been greatly exaggerated.

Model History/Marketing Philosophy: Mercury's "Marauder" nameplate first appeared on slantback versions of the 1964 Monterey, Montclair and Park Lane two- and four-door sedans, powered by a huge 425 cubic-inch V8 that made up to 427 gross horsepower. A new Marauder arrived in 1969 riding a shorter wheelbase and sporting a "tunnelback" rear window design. It came in standard and X-100 trim, with either a 390 cubic-inch V8 or a 429 big block V8 making 360 gross horsepower. The Marauder survived through 1970, but then died due to slow sales and disinterest in performance-tuned large cars.

For 2003, Mercury resurrects the Marauder as a tweaked and massaged version of the Grand Marquis sedan. This isn't the first time that a recipe calling for a big engine, fat wheels and black paint has revived interest in a relatively staid and conservative box-on-wheels. Anyone remember the 1994-96 Chevrolet Impala SS? The new Marauder caters to the same crowd of aging, "buy American," muscle-car aficionados as the Impala, and should easily perform the task of raising Mercury's brand awareness as the marque struggles to remake itself. Body Styles, Trim Levels and Options: The 2003 Marauder comes just one way: fully-loaded and painted jet black. The options list is limited to a moonroof, a trunk organizer and a six-disc CD changer.

Powertrains and Performance: The Marauder is powered by an all-aluminum DOHC 4.6-liter V8 making 300 horsepower 5,750 rpm and 310 lb.-ft. of torque at 4,250 rpm. It breathes through a true dual exhaust system with chrome-plated pipes. A four-speed automatic transmission with a high-stall speed torque converter drives the rear wheels through a 3.55 rear axle with limited-slip differential. Massive 18-inch five-spoke wheels are shod with sticky BFGoodrich g-Force T/A tires (P235/50ZR18 in front and P245/55ZR18 in back).

Safety: With its basis on the Grand Marquis, the 4,165-pound Marauder is large and heavy. Federal crash testing of the Grand Marquis has resulted in a five-star rating for frontal impacts and four-star ratings for side impacts. The 2003 Marauder comes standard with four-wheel disc antilock brakes with electronic brake force distribution and panic assist (which applies the brakes full-force when a panic stop is detected). Also standard is the Personal Safety System (advanced restraint and airbag systems) and seat-mounted side airbags.

Interior Design and Special Features: Inside, enthusiast drivers will appreciate the white-faced displays, which include a 140-mph speedometer, 7,000-rpm tachometer and full instrumentation with temperature, oil and voltage gauges. Bright trim replaces the fake wood found in the Grand Marquis, adding a touch of attitude. A floor shifter juts out of the center console for a sporty feel, while the five seating positions are upholstered in leather with the winged god Mercury's head embossed in the seatbacks. "Marauder" is embroidered into the floor mats to remind the driver this is a special car.

Driving Impressions/Opinions: The Marauder is a car with a lot to offer. Enthusiasts with families, who're seeking to have their cake and eat it, too, will no doubt appreciate the king-sized sedan's emphasis on both thrills and utility. Fast, handsome and practical, to boot, the Marauder is a ride that's clearly designed to be more than just a one-trick pony.

Mercury Marauder Overview and History

Released in 2003, the Marauder was marketed as a brawnier version of the Grand Marquis.
Named after  the Roman god known for his speed and fashionable winged sandals, this particular car brand is the brain child of Ford Motor Company that was looking for a car brand to fill the gap between Ford and Lincoln as far as price went. These cars would also be stylish and elegant but would be cheaper and more economical.

The name Mercury actually seems to be of good augury, considering that the main line of activity of the Roman god Mercury was commerce. So you could say that in giving this name to the brand, Ford was trying to appease the gods and make it big in the car business.

The first design, of course made by Ford's development department, was the Mercury Eight or the Super Ford, which had a 95hp engine and a design that was hailed as being the most aerodynamic of its time. This was the first car which was first designed using a clay model. From 1930 when it was first launched and up until 1938, production already reached 17,000 units.

This radical increase in production was the result of an unexpected rise in demand, so much so in fact, that by 1940, Ford was struggling to keep up. Figures reached the 155,000 mark. But pretty soon things were going to come to a screeching halt due to WWII, during 1942 and 1945.

In 1946, production resumed but with a slightly modified version of the 1942 model Eight. By 1950, there were 1 million Mercurys rolling on the roads. It was now time to push things forward from an innovative point of view, and this is why Mercury launched its first automatic transmission, the Merc-O-Matic on all its models starting with 1951. Cars also underwent a few stylish changes, like “frenched” headlamps with sheet metal surround or behind grille, airfoil bumpers, jet scoop hoods and instrument gauges aviation style.

During the mid 50s, Mercury cars were just about the wickedest things on the road, and a testament of that is the fact that a customized Mercury was featured in the movie “Rebel Without a Cause” starring James Dean. Towards the end of the decade, Mercury also entered the racetrack circuit.

1960 would see the introduction of two new models: the Comet and the Meteor. Whereas the Comet was a stylish compact, the Meteor was a somewhat smaller car, an indication of the fact that America was downsizing. The Comet showed its mettle on the Daytona Speedway Track where it showed remarkable stamina as a fleet of Mercury cars ran for 100,000 at an average speed of 105 mph. As the 60s drew to an end, a new model was added to the lineup, the Cougar, which joined the Mercury family in 1967.

When the oil crisis of the 70s hit, Mercury responded by introducing smaller, European-made cars, the Mercury Capri and the Bobcat. But that doesn't mean that older models weren't selling anymore. On the contrary, a redesigned Cougar XR-7 caused sales to go through the roof. Sales figures for Mercury continued to climb well into the 80s.

It was during the 80s that Mercury tried to capture a wider section of the market and came out with new models, the Lynx and the Grand Marquis. But the car that stands out in this decade is the 1986 Mercury Sable. It had a very low drag coefficient which made it fuel efficient.

Mercury's expansion continued all through the 90s. This time it would be a minivan that would be added to the fleet, Mercury Villager, soon to be followed in 1997 by the SUV Mountaineer which managed to attract a more younger market.

With the dawn of the new century, Mercury sought to improve on performance but also on fuel efficiency and emissions. Also, in an effort to unify the brand, all cars began to share certain design  features as the front grille and the updated badge lettering. New models from this period include the  Milan and Mariner.

Recently though sales began to show lower number and many people wondered about the future of the brand. Ford was quick to dismiss any rumors that it would burry Mercury and in 2008 announced that it would be making the company part of its small car strategy.

Under the Radar
The subdued styling, borrowed from the Grand Marquis and Crown Victoria allows the Marauder to be a true sleeper. Considering the weight of the Marauder performance is excellent. Handling is predictable, and can be pushed. Tail slide in hard cornering is likely in hard cornering or slick conditions, but the long wheel base and responsive steering allows a driver to push through it. On the entertaining side, when cruising on or slightly above the legally posted speed limit on the interstate, lines of brake lights will pop up and hearts will skip a beat as police cruiser clone pops out of traffic. Very reliable. I replaced a set of shocks, 18 oil changes, k&n air filter & drove it over 95k.

One too many repairs
Cool car, but it's been more than 20 years since I've owned a car that so many things have broken or failed. Most are odd and surprising: lower A arms at 70,000 miles, rear axle seal at 80,000, failure of headlights (needed new Light Control Module at $ 400 just for the part), rusted lower steering column at 104,000. Also, a number of the interior lights (headlight switch indicator, power window buttons, heated seat buttons) no longer work. Vacuum leak in the vent system disables controls. Now it is in shop, likely needing an $ 800 fuel pump replacement. I love the car but I've spent $ 3 or 4 thousand over the last 3 years fixing things that I've never fixed before in any other car I've owned.

Handles well at speed
I have about 200 Miles on my Maurader. I have had it up to 110 and it handles pretty well at that speed. I have been babying it a bit since its so new. Car pulls pretty well at upper RPMs and has smooth continuing power but will not burn the tires off the line very well. Ford Tech services claims fuel cut off at 123 but have yet to test this. Seems to handle much better at speed than the Crown Vic Sport pkg Car. Overall the car does very well but won't pass a gas station and it claims that Premium fuel is required. Milage statement on sticker seems to be very pie in the sky optimum operating condition numbers.

Overall great car to play with
This beastly ride is great! It may not have the initial tire-chirping torque that marks a true muscle car, however it does get up to speed quite quickly and keeps up better with traffic than its crown vic, police interceptor, or grand marquis brethren. Not to mention the leather seats are comfortable and make you feel very relaxed, and the car rides smooth down the highway thanks to the self-leveling air suspension in the back. This car is a real head turner also, even bone stock 'cause it's one you don't see everyday unless you personally own one like me :D. This ride is a great keeper for anyone who is lucky enough to have one.

2004 Mercury Marauder
"Top car then and now"
My 2004 original owner Mercury Marauder is a gem. I must say this car has exceeded every expectation to comfort, space, safety and performance. The new cars today are great but this is truly a stand out in ride comfort and overall performance. This is what American car companies will never get right again-full frame, rear drive, American large sedan. The Dodge Charger comes close so before that one goes run out now and buy one.

"Great car to own"
I have owned my Marauder since 2004. It was 1 year old with 15K miles when I bought it. It has been a blast to drive. Very comfortable, very classy, very sinister in the right ways, very tame when you want it, and clears traffic when you cruise down the highway. After having it for a year I let my wife use it one day. She commented "I couldn't understand why everyone would pull to the right when I came up behind them... Then I remembered you car looks like a cop car..." I imagine I have dodged a few citations because the officer didn't want to be that guy who pulled over an undercover police car. In stock trim the Marauder has the right exhaust note. A customer remarked "that's exactly how I want my car to sound... Not too loud but with a mean burble..." I can say that fuel mileage has been pretty good when you consider the size, weight, and horsepower. I never get below 17 MPG and my highest was 22 MPG. If I did 50/50 hwy/city I would get 19 or 20. Mine has the small tank which correlates to a large trunk. Range is a bit low (240 - 340 miles) but I heard the large tank option caused fires in Florida Highway Patrol car accidents (unsubstantiated). I will say the only maintenance costs I would question are the electronic failures I incurred. I replaced the temperature control module ($ 650+), headlight control module ($ 500+), window motors (~$ 200 each x3). I attribute this to the fact mine is black on black. The heat in the summer time could have cooked these electronics. The tire sizes are getting a little challenging to find but alternatives do exist. The Marauder featured staggered sizes front to rear. Fronts are 17" diameter and rears are 18" diameter. The rear spec is wider than front tires. Some tire stores have options to make these similar in size lowering the price. You still cannot rotate them front to rear though. This personally did not bother me. I did find the factory alignment spec didn't work well with these larger size tires. It was the same spec as the passenger Crown Victoria with smaller tires. Mine would always wear out the inside bead of both front tires. Last time I got my alignment I told the Ford guy and he maximized the camber to zero or positive. The front tires increased from 40k miles to 55k miles after that with no inner wear.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
