The 2010 Volvo S40 is a stylish and comfortable sedan. However, it's more expensive than the capable VW Jetta GLI and isn't as sporty or polished as true European luxury sport sedans.

There are regular cars and there are luxury cars. Between these two worlds exists a niche for vehicles like the 2010 Volvo S40. The S40 is a premium model for sure, but we wouldn't call it a luxury sedan. As such, the S40 might appeal to people who can't afford something like an Audi A4 but still want a car that's more prestigious to own than a Mazda 3.

To its credit, the S40 looks more sophisticated than many sedans, and its overall styling has stayed surprisingly fresh even though the car has entered its sixth year of production. The interior is also sleek-looking, with a "floating" center console and customizable trim options that make the S40 stand out from the crowd. Still, it's unlikely that you'd be able to convince many of your friends that your Volvo is cooler than a BMW or a Mercedes-Benz and those brands typically enjoy more brand cachet.

Nonetheless, if you're shopping in this in-between segment, the suave S40 might be an appealing option. The cheaper Volkswagen Jetta and its GLI performance variant offer competitive acceleration and handling, but their interior styling is a relatively ho-hum affair despite quality construction and materials. Accordingly, the 2010 Volvo S40 could be a solid choice, particularly if you can get a big discount on one. But make sure you also check out the Acura TSX, the Lexus IS 250 and perhaps even a loaded version of the highly regarded Mazda 3.

The 2010 Volvo S40 sedan is available in two trim levels, 2.4i and T5 R-Design. The base model comes standard with 17-inch alloy wheels, foglights, cruise control, automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat, a tilt-telescoping steering column, neoprene-like T-Tec upholstery (also known as Dalaro), Bluetooth and an eight-speaker stereo with CD player, auxiliary audio jack, iPod/USB audio jack and HD radio. The T5 R-Design adds a turbocharged engine, driver memory functions, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, partial leather upholstery and upgraded R-Design exterior and interior trim.

On the options list, the Climate package includes heated front seats, headlight washers and automatic wipers. The Preferred package gets you a sunroof, a power passenger seat and keyless ignition/entry. The Multimedia package available on the T5 models is really a 12-speaker surround-sound system that includes satellite radio. Stand-alone options include adaptive bi-xenon headlights, a blind-spot warning system, full leather upholstery and a built-in navigation system with real-time traffic updates or a portable navigation system. The T5 R-Design can also be equipped with 18-inch wheels.

The front-wheel-drive S40 2.4i is equipped with a 2.4-liter inline-5 that generates 168 horsepower and 170 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed manual transmission is standard and a five-speed automatic is optional. According to Volvo, this engine will trot the S40 up to 60 mph in an unhurried 8.4 seconds. Estimated EPA fuel economy is 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined.

The T5 R-Design gets a turbocharged 2.5-liter inline-5 that pumps out 227 hp and 236 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard. There's also an all-wheel-drive version of the T5 R-Design available; it has a six-speed manual transmission as standard, with the automatic being optional. Estimated 0-60 times for these models are 6.7 seconds for the front-driver and 7 flat for the AWD version. EPA fuel economy estimates are average for this type of car at 20 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 24 combined for a manual-equipped S40 2.4i. Opting for the automatic changes these numbers slightly to 21/29/24. Surprisingly, the front-drive turbo T5 R-Design gets nearly identical fuel economy. A T5 with AWD drops a couple mpg lower.

Antilock disc brakes, traction control and stability control are standard on all 2010 Volvo S40s. Also included are front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags, along with whiplash-reducing front head restraints. A blind-spot warning system (BLIS) is optional across the lineup.

In government crash testing, the S40 scored four stars for driver protection in a frontal crash and a full five stars in the other frontal and side categories. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety testing, the S40 was awarded the best rating of "Good" in the frontal-offset test and the second-best "Acceptable" rating in the side impact test.

The base five-cylinder engine provides acceleration that's only slightly sprightlier than your typical four-cylinder family sedan. The turbocharged-5 is far superior, though its turbocharged nature makes it a little sluggish off the line. On curvy roads, the 2010 Volvo S40 is stable and confidence-inspiring, but less inspiring to drive than models like the BMW 3 Series or Infiniti G37.

If you like to shop at Ikea -- or at least admire the company's modern designs -- then the 2010 Volvo S40's interior should strike your fancy. The centerpiece is the slim "floating" center stack, which is suspended between the console and the dash. Pretty much everything about the S40's interior design is a direct challenge to the relatively austere interiors found in competing models. The R-Design in particular features snazzy two-tone seats and blue-faced gauges. It certainly looks cool, but calling it "luxurious" might be a stretch. It is plenty functional, though, as most controls are a model of simplicity.

The quality of the S40's interior materials is excellent, and the ergonomically designed seats are extraordinarily comfortable and supportive. While leather is available, we'd save a few bucks and opt for the standard "T-Tec" upholstery, which breathes well in hot weather and firmly holds occupants in place during cornering. Trunk capacity is unimpressive at 12.6 cubic feet.

Despite the moderate size, the 2010 Volvo S40 is one serious automobile, well suited for both the highway and twisting back roads. Stable and solid on the road, the S40 T5's steering yields sharp, reasonably quick responses. Quiet and refined, the T5 is a spirited performer, with its smooth-shifting five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission adeptly handling the engine's power. The Geartronic manual shift mode is not as quick or as fun to drive as a manual transmission, which thankfully is now standard on both the base and AWD variants. Except for appropriate engine sounds when accelerating, little noise is heard. The T5's suspension is noticeably stiffer than usual for Volvos, but discomfort occurs only on rougher bumps. On satisfactory surfaces, the ride is smooth enough. Though easy to load, the trunk's size is modest.

All-Wheel-Drive AvailabilityEven if required only occasionally, all-wheel drive enhances the Volvo's feeling of security. Most of the time, you don't even realize all-wheel drive is present.Dynamic Sport SuspensionVolvo's suspension boosts handling capabilities without extracting a significant penalty in ride comfort.

Scandinavian in nature, the S40's interior and dashboard qualify as no-frills. Volvo's "ultra-slim" center console is a prominent feature shared with the C30 and S80. While the console looks neat, its stylistic slimness would make it difficult to upgrade to an aftermarket audio unit. The company promotes the S40's "ergonomically designed" seats, and their comfort on long drives is undeniable. On the dashboard, temperature and fuel gauges are integrated into the speedometer, but are easy enough to read. Some controls on the vertical console aren't quite as logical as they look, and glovebox space is meager. Compact outside, the S40 is quite roomy in the front-seat area, though it lacks good rear-seat headroom.

The 2010 Volvo S40's design evolves from the more rounded shape that now defines Volvo cars. Few traces of the old squared-off profiles are left on today's products from the Swedish-based automaker. What Volvo calls Intelligent Vehicle Architecture includes "extremely rigid" cross members for side-impact protection and a considerable amount of high-tensile steel in the structure. Manufactured in Belgium, the S40 bears a close resemblance to other Volvo models. Up front, at least, it's a virtual twin to the V50 wagon.

Even in the base 2.4i trim, the S40 features automatic air conditioning, side-curtain airbags, front seat side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), five-speed manual transmission, an engine immobilizer, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control (DSTC), front and rear fog lamps, eight-way power driver's seat, keyless remote entry, heated power mirrors, 17-inch alloy wheels, high-performance audio with six-disc CD changer and auxiliary audio input, a USB/iPod interface, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and a tilt and telescoping steering wheel. Upgrading to the T5 R-Design adds a 2.5-liter turbocharged engine, R-Design body and trim kit, leather seating surfaces and an auto-dimming rearview mirror with compass, while the R-Design AWD adds a six-speed manual transmission.

Popular options are mostly bundled into packages. The Climate Package provides heated seats, headlamp washers, an air filtration system and rain-sensing wipers, while the Multimedia Package brings a 650-watt Dynaudio 12-speaker Surround Sound system with SIRIUS Satellite Radio. A power sunroof, power passenger seat and Keyless Drive are part of the Preferred Package, while hard drive-based navigation, leather seating surfaces (2.4i), Blind Spot Information System (BLIS) and Active Bending dual xenon headlamps serve as standalone options. A five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission is available on the 2.4i and T5 AWD.

The standard 2.4-liter engine is adequate for the casual driver, but lacks the low-end punch needed for quick bursts of speed when passing or merging. If you can swing the extra cash, opt for the T5 R-Design – its turbocharged engine brings the little S40 to life. The T5's optional five-speed Geartronic automatic is not as quick as Audi's DSG manual-shift transmission, but it's the only choice for those who require an automatic transmission. The six-speed manual in the T5 AWD, on the other hand, is a true joy and a must-have for the enthusiast driver.2.4-liter in-line 5168 horsepower @ 6000 rpm170 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/29 (manual), 20/31 (automatic)2.5-liter in-line 5 turbocharged227 horsepower @ 5000 rpm236 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1500-5000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/30 (FWD), 20/27 (manual, AWD), 19/28 (automatic, AWD)

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2010 Volvo S40 ranges from around $ 27,000 for the base 2.4i to about $ 32,000 for the front-wheel-drive T5 R-Design. A loaded T5 with all-wheel drive tops out around $ 41,000. The S40 competes evenly with the Audi A3 and Mitsubishi Lancer Ralliart, and undercuts the Lexus IS by a good margin, although the pricing gap closes quickly once comparable features are added. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the actual transaction price customers are paying in your area, so be sure to check it out before you begin negotiations. Although the new S40 is projected to hold respectable values over a five-year period, it still trails the Lexus IS and Audi A3 in expected long-term residual values.

Volvo S40 Overview and History

As expected, the 2008 version of the S40 comes with the latest safety technologies designed by Volvo and, even if the previous S40 models have been praised for their safety, the Swedish company attempted to get even more in this domain.
AB Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. But it did start out as a car manufacturer, founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main purpose of the company was to produce the safest cars possible, following the death of Assar's wife in a car crash. The automaker was founded April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).

The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. Volvo AB began to function on the 10th of August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, started production of 10 prototypes and set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Its success on the market helped Volvo buy out their engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car producer. By 1931, it was already returning its first dividend to shareholders.

After it reached a production milestone of 10,000 cars in May 1932, Volvo then targeted a new demographic segment, aiming to make their cars cheaper, a car “for the people”. This was going to be the PV 51 which came out in 1936 which was a smaller version of the PV36.

The PV444 was one of the most significant cars of the war era, the first true small car, a mixture of American flair and European size, it would become a resonant success and the best sold model throughout the 60s. The P1800 was Volvo's first sports car, made in the early 60s and it was so popular that it was featured in the hit TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore.

Safety and quality were still paramount for Volvo and that's why the 240 series which replaced the 140 had even more safety innovations in that department, like crumple zones, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. Together with the smaller 340 models, they would make for most of the sales during the 70s and 80s for Volvo.

The 90s brought with them a totally new model, the 850, a front-wheel drive, executive car which won numerous awards for handling and safety features. By now, productions costs were mounting up and Volvo was one of the few independent producers out there, after a proposed deal with Renault fell through in 1993. This forced the company to seek new marketing strategies and that's how the sleeker S40 and V40 models were introduced in the factory's production line.

The new models brought a breath of fresh air, just like the C70 coupe and convertible, which are responsible for revitalizing the Volvo image while keeping in tune with the old tradition of safety and quality.

The buyout of Volvo Cars was announced on January 28, 1998. Until then, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo (the commercial vehicles group). In the following year acquisition for Volvo Cars by American car maker Ford Motor Co. was completed at a price of $ 6.45 billion USD. Volvo used the funds from the sale of the automobile division to finance the purchase of Scania, another leading Swedish truck manufacturer, but the deal was stopped for competition reasons by the European Union. Instead Volvo acquired the commercial vehicles division of French Renault and the American truck manufacturer Mack Trucks (which was owned by Renault at the time). As part of the arangement to buy Renault Trucks, the former parent company, Renault, bought in turn 20 percent in shares in AB Volvo. Among the reasons why Volvo took the initiative to sell the automobile manufacturing was the increasing development costs for new car models, coupled with the fact that it was a relatively small producer. The strategy was instead to grow as a truck manufacturer where it had a stronger market position.

Volvo Automotive's motto is "Volvo for life" attributed to the reliability and safety of their cars. Volvo means "I roll" in Latin. Combined with their company symbol, (commonly mistaken for the male symbol) which actually stands for iron ore and according to the company, represents "Rolling Strength".

2010 Volvo S40 Consumer Reviews

Solid ride
Picked up my S40 AWD R5 turbo in Sweden in early January. Have driven it 1200 miles since, through a lot of snow and construction on the autobahns, as well as urban driving in tight European streets. I love the stability of the car; it inspires more confidence than anything else I've had. Corners very flat. The acceleration is fine with me. Great sound system.

My second Volvo
My first Volvo was a very used, "beater" 1966 122S, reliable as an anvil, quirks and all. A few months back, after a lot of research, I purchased a 2010 S40 2.4i. After being severely injured in an auto accident I wanted a safe, practical, small car with good handling characteristics and decent performance. I drove a C30, then an S40 and decide that the S40 was for me. Besides daily driving I have logged 1200 miles on a road trip to Connecticut from Ohio and back putting in two 550 mile days in comfort.

The best at the price
Got the car early this year; first thing i noticed was the torque, i love the strength of the car,its powerful, good gearbox, bit of a hard drive, that just makes it more sporty. I am happy i bought it, it handles corners well for a fwd car. the motor makes that sound...nuts man, love it to bits

2nd Volvo S40
The 1.9% fin, maint covered for 5yrs/60K miles pursuaded me to buy 2nd S40 (prior being '06). Ownership experience has exceeded every reasonable expectation. With few exceptions (AC compressor), maint expense has been more than reasonable, considerably less than had I settled on another luxury make (considered BMW, Lexus). Seating is very comfortable, interior asthetically clean and simple, dash/instrumentation very intuitive. Subtle changes from my prior S40 is improved center console, USB/AUX/iPOD interface, Bluetooth, Satelite/HD radio, Auto- Climate control, BLIS. performance/handling is tight and responsive, though not as that as the '06 (which had sport-tuned suspension)

2010 Volvo S40
"Don't be fooled by the sporty looking exterior."
I bought this car brand new based on Volvo's reputation for safety and reliability. Car ran well with few problems for the first two years, but after that, the maintenance is almost constant, even with regular maintenance. The breaking point for me was when the ENTIRE WINDSHIELD came loose. After replacing the A/C condenser twice within a few months at @ $ 1K each time, along with the water pump, and multiple episodes of overheating, I finally left it at the dealer and told them to junk it. The car looks sporty and actually felt quite fun to drive (I had a manual transmission), but the time and money spent on having it serviced really killed my desire to EVER own another Volvo.
