Thanks to a sharp design and sharper handling, the 2011 Mazda CX-7 brings some much-needed fun to a practical but mostly bland segment.

Every class needs its jock. Without him, your football team would've been terrible and the grading curve for your chemistry final would've been screwed up by the smart kids. In a similar vein, the 2011 Mazda CX-7 could be described as the jock of the compact-crossover class. The CX-7 isn't as sensible as most of its rivals, but it's good looking and far more exciting when you're behind the wheel.

Like most other Mazda models, the CX-7 offers precise handling and responsive steering for its class. A radically raked windshield, bulked-up fender flares and a wide-mouth grille are commonalities as well, and we'd say they look better on the CX-7 than on its siblings. They certainly add up to a more interesting, and, yes, athletic-looking crossover than such rivals as the Chevy Equinox, Honda CR-V and Toyota RAV4.

Of course, those competitors are more practical, blessed with far more space for both passengers and cargo. Families in particular will appreciate the greater versatility and kid-friendly features of the competition. Their engines are also more appealing. True, the Mazda's available turbocharged engine is certainly brawny, but its fuel economy is worst in class. The normally aspirated engine of the base-model CX-7 is more economical, but still not to the degree of the most frugal choices in this class, and it's also rather slow.

So as you can see, there are distinct pros and cons to bringing a 2011 Mazda CX-7 home to mom. If you're looking for something that's more sensible though a bit less fun, we'd suggest checking out the 2011 Hyundai Tucson, 2011 Kia Sportage or 2011 Subaru Forester. Whoever said picking the jock would be easy?

The 2011 Mazda CX-7 is five-passenger compact crossover SUV. There are two engines available; the base four-cylinder is indicated with an "i" and the turbocharged four-cylinder gets an "s." Each is available in different trim levels.

The base i SV comes equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, cruise control, keyless entry, full power accessories, air-conditioning, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player and auxiliary audio jack. The i Sport adds privacy glass, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and shift knob, and Bluetooth. The Convenience package adds to the i Sport a sunroof, automatic climate control, an eight-way power driver seat with manual lumbar adjustment, heated front seats, a color trip computer and a rearview camera. The i Touring includes all Convenience package items plus leather upholstery, a navigation system and a nine-speaker Bose sound system with a six-CD changer and satellite radio.

In addition to its turbocharged engine, the s Touring gains the i Sport's equipment plus 18-inch wheels, an eight-way power driver seat and manual lumbar adjustment, heated front seats, a cargo cover and leather upholstery. The Touring Technology package adds the rest of the i Touring's extra equipment. The s Grand Touring includes all previously mentioned items, but adds 19-inch wheels, automatic xenon headlights, foglamps, heated mirrors, automatic wipers, keyless ignition/entry, a blind-spot warning system, driver seat memory functions, a four-way power passenger seat and electroluminescent gauges.

The 2011 Mazda CX-7 i models are powered by a 2.5-liter four-cylinder that produces 161 horsepower and 161 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive and a five-speed automatic are standard. In testing, this engine took the CX-7 from zero to 60 mph in 9.8 seconds -- slow, but not much worse than the class average. EPA estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg city/28 mpg highway and 23 mpg combined.

The CX-7 s gets a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder that produces 244 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are standard, but all-wheel drive is optional. In our tests, a CX-7 turbo accelerated from zero to 60 in 7.7 seconds -- a swift time for the class. EPA-estimated fuel economy is poor at 18/24/20 with front-wheel drive and 17/21/19 with AWD.

Every 2011 Mazda CX-7 comes standard with traction and stability control, antilock brakes with brake assist, front side airbags and side curtain airbags. In brake testing, a CX-7 i Sport came to a stop from 60 mph in 131 feet -- a bit longer than average. In contrast, the CX-7 s Grand Touring stopped in an excellent 113 feet.

The CX-7 has not been rated using the government's new, more strenuous 2011 crash-testing procedures. Its 2010 ratings (which aren't comparable to 2011 tests) were a top five-star rating in both front and side collisions. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded the CX-7 its highest rating of "Good" for both frontal-offset and side-impact crashworthiness, but the second-worst "Marginal" in the roof strength test.

When it comes to handling and braking performance, the 2011 Mazda CX-7 lives up to Mazda's sporty reputation. The steering is nicely weighted, and the effort increases in direct proportion to cornering forces. This crossover SUV feels stable in turns and changes direction quickly. The CX-7 rides a bit firmer than most competitors, but that's a livable trade-off for such performance.

The performance of the base engine is merely adequate, with acceleration that's on the slow side even in a class of pokey performers. The turbocharged engine is much more spirited, but the combination of turbo lag and the transmission calibration sometimes makes the power delivery feel somewhat abrupt to those used to cruising around in crossovers with V6 engines. Fuel economy is also pretty poor.

The CX-7's athletic styling carries over to the interior of the cabin, where the edgy yet functional design provides a more visually interesting environment than one might expect from a crossover SUV. A sporty three-spoke steering wheel is reminiscent of the one found in the Miata, while the gauge cluster is similar to the RX-8's. Build quality and ergonomics are both very good, although some might find the radio controls a bit complicated compared to other vehicles. The available navigation system is less expensive than those in most other cars, but its small display makes certain information hard to see.

Ample hiproom and headroom keep CX-7 passengers comfortable, even with all five seats occupied. However, rear legroom doesn't measure up to that of chief competitors, notably the Equinox. There are about 30 cubic feet of cargo space behind the second-row seat, while maximum capacity stands at about 59 cubes. The latter number is more than 10 cubes fewer than the class-leading RAV4, Forester and CR-V, but on par with crossovers like the Tucson and Sportage.

To make the Mazda "zoom-zoom" story work with a sport utility vehicle requires quite a bit of engine and suspension tuning. In the case of the 2011 Mazda CX-7, the goal has been accomplished while delivering a firm, but comfortable ride and adequate fuel economy. When equipped with the 161-horsepower engine, the CX-7's driving experience is still fun, if not fast. It's the 244-horsepower turbocharged engine that makes the CX-7 a blast to drive. The turbo engine delivers 90 percent of its peak toque at very low engine speeds, providing great acceleration from rest and when merging into fast-moving traffic.

Folding Rear SeatsThe 2011 Mazda CX-7's 60/40-split folding rear seats can be lowered via a remote release located at the rear of the cargo hold. The seatbacks fold flat without the need to remove the headrests.Advanced Keyless Entry and Start SystemWith the key fob-shaped remote securely in one's pocket or purse, the CX-7's doors can be unlocked simply by approaching the vehicle.

Matching the CX-7's sporty exterior is an equally handsome interior, highlighted by high-quality plastics, attractive orange dash lighting and comfortable front bucket seats. Base models feature cloth seats with chrome accents, while higher-end cars come with leather seating surfaces, automatic climate control and an available Bose audio system. Also available is a tiny navigation screen which doubles as the view screen for the rear back-up camera. The navigation screen display is too small and too busy to be effective. Rear-seat headroom and legroom is excellent. When more cargo room is required, an easy-to-reach lever folds the rear-seat backs forward.

It takes only one glance to see the 2011 Mazda CX-7 is no ordinary SUV. With its front wheels pushed far forward and covered with RX-8-inspired hood and fender flares, the 2011 Mazda CX-7 looks like it would be happier on a racetrack rather than at soccer practice. A sleek 66-degree windshield angle furthers the CX-7's racy exterior, as do more subtle touches such as a blacked-out lower air intake, chrome door handles and large round dual exhaust tailpipes. Sporty 18- and 19-inch wheels are available.

The 2011 Mazda CX-7 is offered in five trim levels. The i SV, i Sport, and i Touring models feature a 161-horsepower, four-cylinder engine mated to a five-speed automatic transmission. The s Touring and s Grand Touring are fitted with a 244-horsepower, turbocharged engine connected to a six-speed automatic transmission. Both automatics feature a manual-shift mode. The base i SV model includes power windows, power door locks, 17-inch wheels and cruise control. Base sound system is an AM/FM stereo with single MP3-compatible CD player and auxiliary audio input jack. The s Touring model gains 18-inch wheels, leather seating, a power adjustable driver's seat and a retractable cargo cover. The i Touring model has a Bose audio system, SIRIUS satellite radio, a rear back-up camera and a color Multi-Information Display. The i Grand Touring adds high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, automatic climate control, 19-inch wheels, DVD navigation, Smart Key keyless entry and start and the Blind Spot Monitoring system.

Most options are bundled into groups. One such is the Touring Technology Package, which adds a Bose Centerpoint Surround Sound System with nine speakers and a six-disc CD/MP3 changer and a color multi-function LCD screen with rear back-up camera. Stand-alone options include fog lamps, six-disc CD/MP3 changer, remote engine start, rear back-up camera and a DVD entertainment system.

The 2011 Mazda CX-7 offers a choice of two engines. The base i SV, i Sport and i Touring use a 161-horsepower, 2.5-liter four-cylinder engine teamed to a five-speed Sport automatic transmission. The s Touring and s Grand Touring models employ a 244-horsepower, 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine. Though similar in design to the engine used in the MAZDASPEED3, the CX-7 uses a different turbocharger. This permits more power to be produced at a lower rpm and makes the engine act like a much larger naturally-aspirated V6. Assisting the smooth transfer of power from the turbocharged engine is a six-speed automatic transmission that features a manual shift mode for a more spirited driving experience.2.5-liter in-line 4161 horsepower @ 6000 rpm161 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/282.3-liter in-line 4 turbocharged244 horsepower @ 5000 rpm258 lb.-ft. of torque @ 2500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/24 (FWD), 17/21 (AWD)

The Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of the 2011 Mazda CX-7 i SV starts just under $ 23,000, while the i Sport trim starts closer to $ 23,500. The turbocharged s Touring model starts around $ 27,000 with all-wheel drive adding another $ 1,800 to the bottom line. A fully-loaded s Grand Touring model tops out around $ 38,000. A look at the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price will show real-world transaction prices paid for the 2011 Mazda CX-7 in your area. The CX-7 is expected to retain a strong resale value and should be on par with the Ford Edge but well below the smaller Honda CR-V.

2011 Mazda CX-7 Future Generations

Mazda CX-7 Overview and History

The second generation of Mazda CX-7 made its first appearance at the 2009 New York Auto Show.
Born as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. in 1920, Mazda started out as a machine-tool manufacturing plant but quickly turned to making vehicles. The first Mazda car, called the Mazda-Go, a three-wheeled truck appeared in 1931, which a year later began exporting to China. This was the only car that was in production until the Second World War broke out when Mazda factories began making rifles.

After the war, part of the Mazda plant served as the Hiroshima prefecture for a short while. Production and export resumed in 1949 with the same 3-wheeled truck. The first 4-wheel truck was the Mazda Romper, introduced in 1958.

The first pasenger car came in 1960, the Mazda R360 Coupe. Mazda's first partnership with a foreign company was the one in 1961 with NSU/Wankel with which it produced and developed rotary engines. This was done in order to differentiate Mazda from the other Japanese companies. To this day, Mazda is the only manufacturer of Wankel rotary engines as the other companies (NSU and Citroen) gave up on the design sometime during the 70s.

Mazda's paid off because its models quickly gained a name as being powerful yet light vehicles. The most successful series for Mazda were going to be the R100 and the RX models which eventually led to the company's development.

Starting with 1970 Mazda began eyeing the biggest market for its cars, the United States. It opened up a North American branch under the name Mazda North American Operations and it proved to have the winning recipe. In fact, Mazda models were so successful that the company even produced a pick up truck based on the rotary engine.

With 1973 and the oil crisis, the thirsty rotary engines that Mazda used caused a drop in sales but the Japanese company hadn't really given up on piston engines so it was able to use a 4 cylinder model on its cars. The smaller Familia series and Capella were born.

But Mazda wasn't about to give up on its sporty cars and it decided to develop a parallel plant that would produce cars outside the mainstream. In 1978, they came up with the very sporty RX7 and later with the RX8. The piston engine also showed up on Mazda's line up with the MX-5 or Miata.

In 1979 Ford Motor Company became an investor in Mazda with a 27% share after the financial decline of the company. Later on, in the 80s, Ford acquired 20% more of the company after a few joint ventures like using the Familia series platform for the Laser and Escort models as well as building the new Probe and the Mazda plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

The 90s started off with another joint venture with Ford on the 1991 Explorer which turned out to be a bad investment for the Japanese while the Americans reaped all the benefits. Following its fascination with alternative engine designs, Mazda started developing the Miller cycle engine in 1995.

The latter part of the 90s proved to be not so profitable for the Japanese as the financial crisis hit in 1997, during which Ford acquired 39.9% of the company. From that point on, the collaboration between the two marques intensified, sharing engine design and even some platforms (Ford Escape with Mazda Tribute and the new generation Ford Focus with the Mazda Axela).

For the future, Mazda intends to maintain its forward thinking and experimental technology, by developing a hydrogen-powered car. The prototype has so far reached a 200 kilometers autonomy.

2011 Mazda CX-7 Consumer Reviews

Another great Mazda
After driving my Mazda5 for five years without one problem it was time to trade. I looked at other brands of smaller SUVs and Minivans but in the long run the reliability of my 5 and my great dealer service persuaded me to stay with Mazda. I have had the CX-7 since Aug. 2010 and so far there has not been even a trace of a problem. The CX-7 has undergone improvements in ride, quiet cabin and interior appointments and they are all appreciated. The seats are very comfortable and the dashboard it really smart looking. On my most recent highway trip I averaged 30.5 miles per gallon. In normal city driving I average 22 mph. I love the car.

non-turbo CX-7 is the way to go
I had to wait until April 2011 to get a CX-7i touring. I had rented a CX-7 tubo in Colorado several years ago and liked it but not the $ 20/day for gas. The CX-7i touring is so far very nice. I have taken it on several trips already (1200 miles and several 300 miles). Rides great and handles like a good sedan. Very short turning circle which is handy. I am getting 20-22 mpg in town. I am a bit dissappointed in the highway mileage as it is on the order of 26. Only have 2500 miles on it so maybe it will improve. I think the non-turbo motor had adquate pep for frwy crusing (70-75). Tested a CRV, RAV4 and several other alternatives (Escape for example). The CX-7 is a better car- my view

Love my first Mazda
I've only had this car the last two days and it's really been fun to drive. This is my first crossover and was a smooth transition from my 08 honda civic coupe. It drives and rides like a car! The spacious seats, cargo room, bluetooth feature are my favorite.

i Sport 4dr SUV (2.5L 4cyl 5A)
Transmission and batteries.
All of the cars I own have more than 200K miles on them, I take care of my cars. That being said let me get into my story. The car had been repaired by the dealership at -closed- Mazda in Fremont, CA rear bumper damage during transport, this was not disclosed to us until after we complained we found pink bondo underneath chipped paint. Who repairs a plastic bumper with bondo? That isn't the cars fault, this was the dealer so onto the actual car. I like the amenaties of the car Bluetooth, awesome speakers sun roof tineed back windows. The ride is good acceleration is good brakes are good, except for the parking brake, which I think is useless, car completely rocks forward after setting luckily the actual park gear is their. Seats are comfy steering is average design and look of the car is good. Plenty of space, road noise, I don't notice road noise much but I listen to music with my windows rolled up. Tires, wow one brand makes your tires, special order, ~$ 200 a tire, go to costco they have a great warranty service. I had to replace the battery around 36K miles, replaced it with a $ 200 5 year battery warranty from O'Reilly awesome place a bit expensive but I like the peace of mind. I do not like the placement of the side impact airbags located near the front windshield on both passenger and driver side, this is a very bad flaw in design, it restricts vision to the corners of the car. This is very annoying because it is supposed to protect you. I'm not trying to say it completely blinds you, but it is blocking some portion of a very important spot in your vision, bad. Other than that the car is aesthetically pleasing and very spacious gas is ok. This is my major problem with the car, I have a service warranty on the car covers oil changes and maintenance, I love it every car should have this service, but wish I opted for the extended warranty for power train and transmission. Here is the story: 2011 MAZDA CX-7 I have owned this car for less than 4 years and it has ~40K miles on it. On October 30, 2015, my wife called me distressed, saying that the car sounded funny on the freeway driving to work. Luckily, after exiting she was able to park the car close by in a metered parking area safely. Later that day, while on her lunch break, she got back into the car and attempted to leave. She normally started the car, released the parking brake, put the car in reverse, lifted her foot off the brake and the car did nothing. At this point, she called me and alerted me of the issue. Our insurance company offers free towing, so we took advantage of that, thank you AAA. We towed the car to the Mazda dealership and they were nice enough to take the car in for storage until repair day. Our car is outside of it warranty. My younger brother also has a Mazda CX-7, but it is an older model 2010. This anomaly also occurred with his car, last year. His Mazda needed a new transmission, which I am assuming will happen to me. Video proof and footage: https://youtu.be/7dfi80znQNI I hope this helps you guys. I don't usually write reviews but when I do, it's bad.

"Piece of garbage. Needs an engine, wheel bearings,"
This vehicle is continuously in need of repair. Trans axle, wheel bearing, engine..... my second and last Mazda. Now it needs fuel injectors. The seat heaters don't get warm until you get to your destination. FM radio has never gotten consistent clarity on any radio station.

"It is a very nice car."
I bought mine used. Im done paying what new cars cost, so I find good cars with low resale values. A new CX-5 is 30,000. A 5-year-old CX-7 was 12,000 (37000K miles). I love the ride and handling and the interior size.

"Great, Reliable Car"
I have owned this car for over 7 years and driven it 109,000 miles. The car performs well and with regular scheduled maintenance continues to run problem free. It is a great car at a reasonable price. The Mazda (my second one) provides more for less money.
