The Mazda CX-5, introduced for the 2013 model year, gave the world of small crossover SUVs a new dynamic benchmark. Not because it was the fastest of its kind, but because its routine handling and steering exhibited nuance. It was simply a crisper and more satisfying crossover to drive than rivals such as the Honda CR-V and the Toyota RAV4. And it didn't come at the expense of utility because the first-generation CX-5 had competitive amounts of room and cargo space. For the redesigned 2017 CX-5, Mazda has kept all of this intact while also giving this small crossover a more refined and upscale feel.

This year's CX-5 is more comfortable and quiet to drive on the highway. Mazda has also upgraded the cabin materials, and the result is downright beautiful. Additional convenience features have been added, especially for the range-topping Grand Touring trim, which has proven especially popular among CX-5 trim levels. Notably, forward collision warning with automatic low-speed emergency braking is now standard on all CX-5s. Before, it was optional.

Overall, we're impressed with the 2017 Mazda CX-5. It's a more grown-up compact crossover than its predecessor, yet it doesn't cede any ground in its hallmark driver-centric nature. If you're looking for a small, affordable crossover that feels as if it should cost considerably more, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 is a good first stop.

Mazda offers the 2017 CX-5 crossover in four trim levels: Sport, Touring, Grand Select and Grand Touring. All have front-wheel drive and offer all-wheel drive as an option. The sole engine choice is a non-turbocharged 2.5-liter four-cylinder (187 hp, 185 lb-ft of torque), which is mated exclusively to a six-speed automatic transmission. Standard equipment for every CX-5 includes a 7-inch touchscreen with Mazda's Connect infotainment system, a backup camera and a 40/20/40-split folding backseat that reclines.

Sport models are the base variant. In addition to the above, the Sport comes with 17-inch wheels, LED headlights, cloth upholstery, a four-speaker sound system, Bluetooth and two USB ports. It's not quite bare-bones, but if you want anything beyond this, you have to step up to the next trim level.

Touring models add a pretty big dose of comfort items that most buyers will find appealing. Included are full keyless ignition and entry, heated front seats with lumbar adjustment and simulated leather upholstery, dual-zone automatic climate control, a six-way power-adjustable driver seat, two additional speakers and two more USB ports. It also receives additional driver assistance features such as blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. Two option packages are also available.

The Grand Select variant goes even further in the luxury direction, adding 19-inch wheels, automatic turn-swiveling headlights, a moonroof, a power liftgate, automatic wipers, leather upholstery, an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, auto-dimming mirrors, a premium Bose audio system, a navigation system and satellite radio. The Grand Touring includes all of the above, along with additional standard safety features that include adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning and mitigation, lane keeping assist and automatic high beams. An option package for the Grand Touring adds a heated steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats, a head-up display and a power front passenger seat.

The Mazda CX-5 has always been among the liveliest and most fun-to-drive SUVs available, and certainly the most in its class. Just don't confuse "liveliest" with "most powerful." The CX-5 has just enough verve to make it feel swift from a standstill, but sheer acceleration isn't its strong suit. The CX-5's real strength is its agility and nimbleness. If you're a driver who actually speeds up when the road twists and turns, the CX-5 is the crossover SUV for you. Steering feel is further improved (taut yet not heavy or artificial) and engaging the Sport mode optimizes the powertrain for even more responsiveness. Thankfully, the Mazda's dynamics don't come at the expense of a harsh ride. Overall quality has been improved, and the suspension better absorbs road imperfections. G-Vectoring Control -- an almost imperceptible use of engine timing to create a smoother driving experience -- is now standard on the CX-5.

SMART CITY BRAKE SUPPORT This safety system can reduce the damage from -- or altogether prevent -- a frontal collision at speeds from 2 to 19 mph by first alerting the driver and then automatically applying the brakes if an impending collision is sensed. Best of all, it is standard on every 2017 CX-5. LANE-DEPARTURE WARNING SYSTEM This optional safety system has also been improved. Whereas in the previous model the system could be overly sensitive, the new CX-5 reads lanes well and warns the driver with a more agreeable, lower-pitch audible warning. A secondary system can even nudge the vehicle back into its lane.

All CX-5 models have two rows of seating for up to five passengers. Like its rivals, though, trying to fit three adults in back can be a squeeze. On the other end of the spectrum, installing child seats is now easier thanks to rear doors that open wider. Mazda’s interiors feel a class-above: From the standard push-button start and 7-inch touch-screen display with command dial down to the elegant air vents surrounded by brightwork, this is one classy cabin. With 40/20/40-split rear seats folded, cargo room maxes out at just under 60 cubic feet -- nearly 16 less than a Honda CR-V.

The CX-5 has always been a fine-looking vehicle, but this all-new version ups the ante to arguably the classiest in its segment. Thank the cues taken from its svelte big brother, the CX-9. Like that midsize SUV, Mazda's compact-crossover utility vehicle begins with a prominent trapezoidal grille connected to fancy-looking -- and bright -- LED headlight slits and extends to a flowing "Kodo" design meant to invoke a "refined toughness." We think it works well. This is most true in the new Soul Red Crystal paint, a production color so deep and glossy that it'd do justice to an exotic sports car.

The 2017 CX-5 is again offered in three main trims: Sport, Touring and Grand Touring. The least expensive CX-5 Sport model includes keyless entry with push-button start, 17-inch wheels, the Smart City Brake Support active safety system, and rearview camera. The base infotainment system includes a 7-inch touch screen with 4-speaker AM/FM/HD Radio, twin USB inputs and an auxiliary port. 2017 marks the year the CD player went extinct in the CX-5. At launch, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are not in the offering, but Mazda says the systems can be retroactively added later.

For less than $ 2,000 more, we recommend the mid-trim CX-5 Touring model, which replaces the base model's 6-way-manual driver's seat with a power-adjustable one and adds Leatherette instead of cloth interior, plus heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, blind-spot monitoring, two rear USB charging ports, rear privacy glass and auto-leveling headlights. Grand Touring models add leather seating, 10-speaker Bose premium audio system, navigation, radar cruise control, lane-departure warning and lane-keep assist, and Smart Brake Support, which works at higher speeds than the basic version. Further options include a head-up display, heated steering wheel and heated rear outboard seats.

Upon launch, the 2017 Mazda CX-5 will offer just one engine, the 2.5-liter 4-cylinder Skyactiv gasoline powerplant that carries over from the previous model (but adds three horsepower). Tied to a 6-speed automatic transmission, the engine is neither the most powerful nor most efficient in its class, but it puts up respectable numbers, especially in fuel economy of up to 31 mpg. The standard setup is front-wheel drive (FWD), with all-wheel drive (AWD) optional. The CX-5 is rated to tow up to 2,000 pounds. After years in the making, Mazda says it will finally bring a diesel CX-5 to the U.S. market in the second half of 2017. The diesel model is set to use a 2.2-liter 4-cylinder that is touted for its torque and fuel efficiency. Stay tuned for our impressions on that one.2.5-liter inline-4187 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm185 lb-ft of torque @ 3,250 rpm (4,000 rpm for AWD models)EPA city/highway fuel economy: 24/31 mpg (FWD), 23/29 mpg (AWD) Note: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Mazda CX-5 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $ 24,985, including destination. The more recommendable Touring model, with its additional safety features and amenities, still offers a lot to like for $ 26,855. Top-line Grand Touring models begin at $ 30,335. Adding all-wheel drive to any model is an additional $ 1,300. Fully loaded, a 2017 CX-5 Grand Touring model dressed in Soul Red Crystal ($ 595) can reach past $ 34,000. At its starting price, the CX-5 is right in line with the Honda CR-V, slightly under the Toyota RAV4, and slightly above the Ford Escape and Nissan Rogue. A Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson and Subaru Forester also start below the CX-5. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. Historically, the CX-5's resale value has held up well, though not to the extent of the CR-V.

Mazda CX-5 Overview and History

A new generation Mazda CX-5 crossover has been introduced in late 2016, the car now being sportier, better looking and more equipped. The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY and the new design theme, ‘KODO - Soul of Motion.’ The Mazda CX-5 evolves Mazda’s hallmark fun-to-drive character and will be progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012. Developed around the full range of SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY — including all-new Mazda gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, body and chassis — the CX-5 delivers precise response and a high-quality ride matched with outstanding environmental and safety performance.
Born as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. in 1920, Mazda started out as a machine-tool manufacturing plant but quickly turned to making vehicles. The first Mazda car, called the Mazda-Go, a three-wheeled truck appeared in 1931, which a year later began exporting to China. This was the only car that was in production until the Second World War broke out when Mazda factories began making rifles.

After the war, part of the Mazda plant served as the Hiroshima prefecture for a short while. Production and export resumed in 1949 with the same 3-wheeled truck. The first 4-wheel truck was the Mazda Romper, introduced in 1958.

The first pasenger car came in 1960, the Mazda R360 Coupe. Mazda's first partnership with a foreign company was the one in 1961 with NSU/Wankel with which it produced and developed rotary engines. This was done in order to differentiate Mazda from the other Japanese companies. To this day, Mazda is the only manufacturer of Wankel rotary engines as the other companies (NSU and Citroen) gave up on the design sometime during the 70s.

Mazda's paid off because its models quickly gained a name as being powerful yet light vehicles. The most successful series for Mazda were going to be the R100 and the RX models which eventually led to the company's development.

Starting with 1970 Mazda began eyeing the biggest market for its cars, the United States. It opened up a North American branch under the name Mazda North American Operations and it proved to have the winning recipe. In fact, Mazda models were so successful that the company even produced a pick up truck based on the rotary engine.

With 1973 and the oil crisis, the thirsty rotary engines that Mazda used caused a drop in sales but the Japanese company hadn't really given up on piston engines so it was able to use a 4 cylinder model on its cars. The smaller Familia series and Capella were born.

But Mazda wasn't about to give up on its sporty cars and it decided to develop a parallel plant that would produce cars outside the mainstream. In 1978, they came up with the very sporty RX7 and later with the RX8. The piston engine also showed up on Mazda's line up with the MX-5 or Miata.

In 1979 Ford Motor Company became an investor in Mazda with a 27% share after the financial decline of the company. Later on, in the 80s, Ford acquired 20% more of the company after a few joint ventures like using the Familia series platform for the Laser and Escort models as well as building the new Probe and the Mazda plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

The 90s started off with another joint venture with Ford on the 1991 Explorer which turned out to be a bad investment for the Japanese while the Americans reaped all the benefits. Following its fascination with alternative engine designs, Mazda started developing the Miller cycle engine in 1995.

The latter part of the 90s proved to be not so profitable for the Japanese as the financial crisis hit in 1997, during which Ford acquired 39.9% of the company. From that point on, the collaboration between the two marques intensified, sharing engine design and even some platforms (Ford Escape with Mazda Tribute and the new generation Ford Focus with the Mazda Axela).

For the future, Mazda intends to maintain its forward thinking and experimental technology, by developing a hydrogen-powered car. The prototype has so far reached a 200 kilometers autonomy.

2017 Mazda CX-5 Consumer Reviews

Grand Touring 4dr SUV AWD (2.5L 4cyl 6A)
More zoom-zoom than your typical compact SUV
If money was no object, I'd be driving a Porsche Cayenne S. But since my current car budget did not have room for a $ 90K SUV (and the associated high maint costs), I feel I did the next best thing and got a Mazda CX-5 GT with prem pkg. No, it's not nearly as fast as a Cayenne, but for about a third the the price, this little SUV acts a lot like that Swabian icon of the road. This is my second CX5. I had a 2013 as well. The 2017 is a HUGE upgrade from the 2013 model. I got my new one in Soul Red Crystal, and it literally glows! Love it. The 2017 is MUCH quieter inside than the earlier model, and compared to even a new Honda CRV, or a Ford Escape, the Mazda is quieter and more composed on the road, and handles much better than those rivals. Although the stability control is a little too aggressive for my taste, you can still toss this thing around like a sports sedan and not worry about the suspension getting flabby & floppy on you. It just tracks beautifully and handles mid corner bumps with aplomb (just like the Cayenne). If your main goal is having a lot of interior room & cargo space, go for the CRV (which is MUCH roomier) but in every other aspect I can think of, the Mazda scores higher. The Honda is more like a nice mini-van, disguised as an SUV. Sure it's roomy and peppy, but it in no way rewards the enthusiast driver like the Mazda. The parchment leather interior is just gorgeous, and looks much nicer than (for example) the interior in a BMW X3 or X5. Mazda obsessed over every little detail in this car. I was a bit concerned that I might not like all the "active safety" features, but they are so well done and so well integrated into the operation of the vehicle, that it was easy to get used to, and now I miss them in my other cars. With about 1100 miles on the clock I am averaging 26.9mpg. I do not do much urban driving, but still I am very happy with that result. I expect this result will improve as the engine breaks in. (Over 4 years I averaged 28.4mpg in my 2013 CX5). In short, if you want a "driver's car" but need the room and practicality of an SUV get the CX5 -- unless of course you can spring for the Cayenne :)

Always bought used decided to buy this new
This car is a great value for the quality, technology and overall usability you get for the price. I have always purchased used vehicles in the as I am not one to take the significant depreciation hit of new cars lightly, but the combination of an excellent interior, all the tech features you can ask for combined with great gas mileage were enough to sway me to purchase new. One of my main concerns prior to purchasing the vehicle was that it would feel woefully under powered, fortunately this has not been the case. Coming from a driver who has only had 6 cylinder vehicles in the past and places a premium on good acceleration, I must admit the small displacement engine in the Mazda is more than adequate for everyday use. I have not been left wanting for more power at any point. That isn't to say more power wouldn't make this an even better car but nonetheless what Mazda gives you is plenty. I must admit the main selling point for me was the interior and technology. The fact that you get such good quality materials as well as safety features that are implemented in a way that I felt were superior to other brands I tested including luxury models is truly surprising. Do yourself a favor and try one out in the higher trim levels before going off and buying a significantly more expensive luxury sedan or SUV, you'll be pleasantly surprised at what Mazda has to offer.

Very impressed!
I was debating between the 2017 Honda CRV and 2017 Mazda CX-5. I test drove both and the CX-5 was the clear winner. The CRV was nice and had great features, but just felt a bit boring. Also, it was very apparent when driving the CRV that it is much larger than my current Mazda 3 hatch. Out of curiosity I tried driving the Honda HRV. The exterior if the HRV is super cute, but it was missing many of the tech features I wanted and had a super whimpy engine. I then drove the CX-5. Despite being about the same size as the CRV, the CX-5 was much more car-like in its handling. With the sport mode on, it is very peppy and responsive. On paper, the CRV and CX-5 look very similar in terms of features, quality, and price. But getting behind the wheel made all the difference. While I don't think you could go wrong with either the CRV or CX-5, I'd recommend the CX-5 for anyone who prefers a more sporty, car-like ride.

Huge upgrade from the 2016 model---LOVE MY 2017
This is the best car I ever bought. Period. I said similar things about the 2016 CX-5, but They have completely re-designed the 2017 model. The interior upgrades are SO luxurious, the drive is ultra quiet, and Mazda's can definitely HANDLE the road. You will read some complaints about lack of power, but I find my CX-5 to be pretty peppy. I have driven the CR-V and the Rav-4 and they don't hold a candle to the CX-5. You owe it to yourself to get into one of these machines and give it a go!
neogenedealt,
Would buy another Mazda
This car meets all our needs and most our desires. Who wouldn’t like the handling, styling or the convience of the CX5 as a the primary vehicle in a 2 car stable. But it can be a bit small as an only car and unless your other car has the same confounding infotainment system I would think twice. Yes you can get used to it but if you sometimes have to switch back and forth with another car brand you will always be relearning one or the other. I have also learned to hate the console. Cuphoders and necessary controls back by your hip! The center armrest is way too short, the only way you can use it for an armrest is if you park you right hand on the gearshift which by the way can be entertaining if in manual mode. Yes you will miss a touchscreen too!
addiebecome,
Affordable luxury!
This car is not only luxurious, it's affordable. I have the industrial gray exterior color with light mushroom-colored interior seats. The moon/sun roof is great as the sun really brightens the interior with the light-colored upholstery, the power lift gate is a sheer pleasure (I have a dog who sometimes travels with me in the back and it is convenient to have this feature). It is a dream to drive, flawless and quick-turning (feels like I'm turning on a lazy susan), acceleration is great, especially on highway when most needed. The stitching on the dashboard is classy as are all of the interior features. It is such a smooth, quiet ride too. I have driven Mercedes, BMW and Lexus. In my opinion, this car is better!

Fantastic Mid Size SUV
My wife and I purchased this new in feb 2018. So far, it has been a great vehicle. We like everything about it!

Alway getting praise from strangers for the RED
This car is one of the quietest small SUVs I have ever driven. I would have preferred the same engine as the CX9, but it is still a quick FUN-TO-DRIVE unit. I have 2 flash drives plugged into the ports hidden in the center counsel with my favorite music. The heads-up display is perfect and the Bose sound system is great.
yoisydiesel,
Extremely happy with my purchase of the Mazda cx 5
I bought a used 2017 Mazda cx 5 With 11k miles. I reviewed and tested Audi, Mercedes, Volvo, Lexus and Acura. The Mazda cx 5 was half the price and feels like a luxury car inside. This car is extremely comfortable, coasts down the highway with smooth ride. I have the Grant Touring and was surprised at how easy it was to set up iPhone and use the system. I can haul large items as the back seats fold all the way flat. I am literally in love with this car.
billfemur,
This is a great crossover
Best car I’ve ever owned! Paid it off early, was thinking of trading it in for a luxury mid-size suv. But after reviewing the BMW’s, Lexus, Lincoln, Acura, I’ve decided to update to a new CX5. Can’t believe the over inflated prices of the others. My Mazda is every good and some better than the listed others. Way better gas mileage as well.
halldomino,
Not at all worth the hype
The CX5 is rated highly when compared to similar SUVs. I totally disagree. The 2.5 is woefully under powered. The cabin while nicely appointed and layed out is far too cramped for average sized adults. I would not recommend this car to anyone.
dillsonore,
Its the best mid-size SUV you can ask for
Everything is wonderful. They have updated the software many times, including adding carplay for free. There have been 0 issues. I recommend to everyone.
unsubtlerapadash,
Love this SUV!
My wife and I fell in love with the styling of this SUV and the mazda wasn't even on our list at first. Once we drove it, we were hooked. 40,000 miles later, not one issue and its' great. couldn't be happier, except a little more pep, but its okay.
crapulousmixture,
Great car
I have the cx5 grand touring with all the upgrades. I did a ton of research with this model as well as similar models from other makers. This is absolutely the best bang for the buck. It’s safe, stylish, comfortable, great gas mileage and the technology upgrades are abundant. I feel I’ve made an informative good purchase. Do the research yourself. I’m happy with it and would recommend it to others.

I absolutely love this vehicle. I have owned and driven many nice vehicles and am totally happy with the purchase of my 2017 Mazda CX-5. Acts more like a 6cyl than 4cyl.

Great driving vehicle
My second Mazda, went from the Mazda 6 to the CX5 best move ever. Compared it with the other popular SUVs the fit an finish is much better an a much better looking interior than others in its class.I never had my other Mazda in for any problems in the 8 years I owned it, that was the reason I stayed with Mazda. The CX5 drives an handles perfect, I have 8k on it now an its a joy to drive.

Luxury Crossover without the pricetag
I looked at several crossovers before making my decision. The CX5 provides all of the creature comforts and features of a luxury crossover without paying the premium for the badge. As far as features, the Grand Touring trim is loaded: a great heads up display, with blind spot monitoring, radar cruise control, collision avoidance to list a few. Leather seats are extremely comfortable, and there is plenty of room for rear seat passengers. Heated rear seats, driver and passenger seats are great in cold weather. Added ventilation for rear seat passengers and usb connections are great additions. I sacrificed a bit in terms of cargo space, but that is expected with a compact crossover. There is lots of space for drink storage with cup holders and bottle storage. This car is a pleasure to drive, extremely responsive and road noise is manageable.
condenseused,
High quality interior/ exterior. 40-20-40 split
I owned a 2010 GMC Acadia AWD SLT before this, nothing but problems.. replaced engine, replaced transmission, you name it, I had to get it fixed over and over again and engine light still came back on again and again. So.. staying clear of any of the big 3 US auto makers, which Ive only ever purchased in my history of driving (Im 56). I finally did the right thing and looked at the Japanese CUVs.. All were really good, but the Mazda CX-5 GT came out ahead. The 40-20-40 back seat is perfect for getting 4 people up to a ski hill with all the ski equipment.. cant do that in a 40-60 split. I was also able to get my road bike in with just one back seat down, none of this taking the wheels off the bike. The interior is quite different compared to the 2013-2016 first generation CX-5s, the quality is similar to CUVs 20K more.. I know, I looked at over 12 CUVs before finally deciding on the 2017 CX-5. This has beautifully crafted and comfortable leather seats, heated front and back seats, heated steering wheel. Real upholstery stitching on dashboard doors, not the fake stuff from previous years. The NAV screen display is up high with controls on the console much like the BMWs. For the exterior.. wow! Love the lines, a more meaner look than 1st generation. The new LED lighting is standard on the 2017s, this is a 1400 option on some of the other high end cars. Lights turn as well when turning. I got this in the Soul Red Crystal Metallic. What a beauty. As for the ride, 10 out of 10. It corners exceptionally well, pickup is also smooth, definitely not a bullet; my gas guzzling Acadia I had could easily take it on a straight away.. so what? This is much more fun to drive! So finally.. not allowed to bash dealerships, just a buyer beware tip.. If you are given the choice of over priced rust protection and on over priced tire warranty that they sneak in with what the low sounding extra monthly payments will be, it adds up!! Take the Technology Package that is available with the GT, I did not do this and regret it. The TP is a 1600 option that has many extra safety features as well as XM satellite that is not available with out it. Yes, lessons learned for my next Mazda purchase at another Mazda dealership. For this reason, I gave an 8 out of 10 for poor communication from not mentioned dealership.

Loaded with Features AND Fun to Drive
This is my first Mazda in years, after dedicating many miles and dollars to Honda. The New CRV or CX-5 were in the finals, after test driving or renting nearly everything else in this segment. The CX-5 put a smile on my face, where the CRV felt like an appliance. One of its first maiden voyages was to Nova Scotia with my family. If I was not convinced before, I was after that trip. Handling, surprising style, quality and features are the Highs. Strange ergonomics in the Infotainment System are the lows, but the Bose sound is amazing. Good gas mileage and highway power where you want it in the 65 MPH and up range for rural stretches of highway. Get the radar assisted cruise control and you will never look back.
uncheckedseasoned,
Love it
Have had it 2 weeks. Made the right choice.
ancestorantarctic,
best overall quality for small SUV
The CX-5 rides better with each day I drive it. Theres so many new bells and whistles, tho, that itll take awhile to learn all their functions. Im trading in the 19 inch rims for 17 inch rims and getting a better quality tire which will improve the ride even more. The improved sound proofing does make a difference with road and engine noise. Best bang for the buck in small SUVs
ouncesubpanel,
What a FABULOUS CX-5
My husband & I had been patiently waiting for this Mazda CX-5 for awhile. My 13 year old GMC Envoy was ready to be replaced. Even our grandchildren (all five) were in agreement with us to buy it too! We have owned the Mazda CX-5 for almost 3 months and driven the heck out of it, both instate as well as out of state twice too! This SUV is made for driving!! I cant emphasize how fabulous this vehicle is!! I adore the push start as well as wonderful pickup and cornering it does. Our daughter & son in law immediately drove it and fell in love with it too!! The backup camera is great for the driver to see and the headlights that move around as you corner in the dark is a mark of safety as we encounter wild animals where we live (deer, coyotes, etc)!! The light & windshield wiper system, as well lane change warning and non skid systems is quite wonderful too! The popup up feature on the moon roof is excellent as well as its sliding open feature!! Our grands love the comfortable backseat (very tall kiddos) and the USB ports in there too are very much utilized by them. We recently took another couple out for dinner and they also raved about this Mazda too!! They were in agreement about how great it is!! Run, do not walk into your Mazda dealership!! You will be so glad you did!! We sure are!!
knightrampallian,
absolutely lovin it
My wife and I were looking to upgrade to a CUV, from sedan after new addition to our family, and settled on CX5. We have been researching the market for a CUV since Feb17. We test drove KIA Sportage, Honda CRV and CX5. I liked the Sportage but my wife didnt like the new exterior design, CRV was a get let down in terms of interior quality, though it was on top of our list, as soon as we step into the car we felt the plastic lying all over the place. We took the CX5 for test drive and both were very impressed on the quality inside out. We picked the top spec Grand Touring with Premium package on the Soul Red Crystal paint. We are absolutely lovin the tall ride position on road, so many useful tech features, the new active driving display(headup display, wide door opening, minimal Noise, Vibration and Harshness, Bose 10 speaker audio and the new car smell. we managed to finance the car at invoice price.
hypocrisywrongful,
Amazing vehicle!
This car is the best car Ive ever owned. The interior of this car is flawless, from the touch screen infotainment center, the control knob in the center console to the command controls on the steering wheel, this car is beautifully designed. The pickup on this car is out of this world, and when put into sport mode, its a ROCKET! Another cool feature is the backup camera is a fish eye, which helps check for oncoming traffic. I cant say enough good things about this car. Can we also talk about PUSH TO START ON THE BASE MODEL?! Such an amazing feature to this car. The trunk has so much room, I can easily fit all my stuff for traveling to college, going on a trip or anything. This car is a must have, too many amazing things to say.
hangfly,
Mazda does it well
This is our 4th CX5 and each one has improved on the last. The 2017 is an awesome vehicle in every way, styling, quality, features and accessories and the extraordinary joy of driving it. We have the Grand Touring with Premium Package which makes it a car without equal in price. Weve had many Mazdas in the last 10 years, this one like the others does not disappoint.
servicesdicing,
I am simply amazed
I just purchased a 2017 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring AWD with all the bells and whistles and I must say - wow - color me very impressed. I have only put about 150 miles on it so far, but in this short time it has been nothing short of stunning. This vehicle hits way above its weight class, it feels more like an 80k SUV rather than a 40k SUV. In typical Mazda fashion (and like the previous generation CX-5), the driving dynamics are simply spectacular for a crossover. It handles like it weighs a thousand lbs less than it does, the electric-steering actually has some tactile feedback that most other numb electric steering vehicles simply lack, and bonus - the ride is substantially improved over the last generation CX-5. No more jolting shots through the spine when hitting a bump or a pot hole. But that handling - wow. Slicing through the Colorado canyons is a blast, it feels like a sports car. But this is nothing new for Mazda. Then there is all the little things - refinement details that only a small company like a Mazda can do that the large companies seem to miss for the same price category; great soft interior materials all around, excellent french stitching, perfectly centered steering wheel, well placed knobs and buttons, multiple USB ports both front and back, heated seats, heated mirrors, heated steering wheel, and everything inside just feels like it was designed to revolve around the driver. The amount of sound deadening they used vs the previous gen has really paid off as well, as the road noise is basically nill and the engine noise is lessened. The 2.5L Skyactiv naturally-aspirated inline 4 in this refresh has a beautiful throaty sound for a 4-banger, and it pulls very linearly on both ends. Throttle response from a dead stop is a bit laggy requiring more throttle than I prefer, but I am hoping a custom tune helps with that. Other than that, this engine has plenty of pickup, so I am not really quite sure why it gets panned so much for not having enough power - it has plenty to move this machine around. Oh and the transmission has been excellent so far - very firm quick shifts without a hint of harshness. Where it really stands out over the previous gen though is in the technology. Beautiful 7 widescreen display on the dash operated by a dial on the center console (simply the easiest way to use such a system), backup camera and GPS navigation that shows on display, stop & go radar that really works, automatic high/low beam LED adaptive headlights that bend with the turn, and an active heads-up display that projects the vehicle speed onto the windshield. It will even display upcoming road signs on the windshield, as well as upcoming turns and distance until target for the navigation. It has lane-assist and blind spot technology too, but I find most of that to be more annoying than helpful. Thankfully nearly everything can be enabled or disabled in the settings, along with various sensitivity settings. Overall after spending many years previously driving boring and bland crossovers, this SUV just makes driving FUN again. Do yourself a favor - even if have a recent previous gen CX-5 - and run over to your local Mazda dealer for a test drive. You wont regret it.

"Love this SUV!"
My wife and I fell in love with the styling of this SUV and the mazda wasn't even on our list at first. Once we drove it, we were hooked. 40,000 miles later, not one issue and its' great. couldn't be happier, except a little more pep, but its okay.

"Great handling, performance and looks but..."
I give an A to the CX-5’s handling, performance and looks, but a D to the dash controls (radio, AC/heater, etc.) I wonder if whoever designed the controls actually drives a car. Difficult to use while driving, even after four months and 5,000 miles. Too bad Mazda went with this design which falls way short of the vehicle’s good points.
