Torque vectoring is standard in every Mazda CX-5. It adds to the CX-5’s already excellent cornering abilities by subtly braking an individual wheel here and there. If anyone thought all mainstream compact-crossover SUVs were boring to drive, they haven’t tried the CX-5. It’s nimble and precise, able to change direction with grace. The naturally aspirated 187-horsepower engine is adequately energetic, able to reach freeway speeds without drama; putting it in Sport mode sharpens its responses. The new turbocharged unit makes the 2019 CX-5 even more attractive. Although the ride quality of the CX-5 traditionally hasn’t been quite as supple as, say, a Honda CR-V’s, new tuning for 2019 may help to fix this.

SMART CITY BRAKE SUPPORT This feature can reduce the severity of an impact or perhaps prevent one altogether. When an accident is imminent, the system will sound an alert. If the driver doesn’t respond in time, it will apply the brakes automatically. It works at speeds of up to 19 mph and is standard in every 2019 CX-5. LANE-DEPARTURE WARNING SYSTEM Using sensors and a windshield-mounted camera to read the painted markings, this system alerts the driver with a low-pitched audible warning when the vehicle is drifting from its lane. If no action is taken, it will gently pull the vehicle back into position.

Mazda cabins always feel more premium than mainstream, full of classy touches such as the elegant chrome-surround vents, push-button start and a 7-inch infotainment touch screen in the 2019 CX-5. Like the competition, the rear seats are more comfortable for two rather than three, but at least the wide-opening doors make child seats easy to install and use. Behind the second row is 30.9 cubic feet of luggage space, expanding to 59.6 when those 40/20/40-split/fold seats are completely down. For some context, the Honda CR-V provides 37.6/75.8 cubic feet. The CR-V also wins the rear-legroom prize: 40.4 inches versus the Mazda’s 39.6.

Put a Jaguar or an Audi badge on the 2019 CX-5’s sheetmetal and it would look perfectly right. This is arguably the best-looking vehicle in its class, especially in Soul Red Crystal paintwork, a production color so deep and glossy it'd do justice to an exotic Italian sports car. Mazda's compact-crossover SUV makes its principal impact with a prominent trapezoidal grille and cool (yet bright) LED headlight slits either side. The lines then flow along the flanks with a taut elegance and come to a satisfying conclusion at the tail. We think it works well.

The 2019 CX-5 is available in Sport, Touring, Grand Touring, Grand Touring Reserve and new Signature trim levels. The least expensive CX-5 Sport model includes 17-inch wheels, cloth-covered seats, keyless entry/ignition, leather-wrapped steering wheel/shift knob, electronic parking brake, Smart City Brake Support, blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert, and a rearview camera. The basic infotainment system includes a 7-inch touch screen, AM/FM/HD radio, Bluetooth, two USB ports, auxiliary audio input, and a 4-speaker setup. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration is standard from the Touring trim upward.

Speaking of the Touring trim, it’s another $ 2,265, but it’s well worth stretching the budget. It brings a power-adjustable driver’s seat, simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, dual-zone climate control, rear privacy glass, rain-sensing wipers, self-leveling headlights with automatic high beams, two rear USB charging ports, and an array of driver aids (adaptive cruise control, Smart Brake Support and lane-departure warning/assist). Grand Touring models have leather seating, 10-speaker Bose audio system, and navigation. Further options include all-wheel drive (Grand Touring and Signature have that as standard), head-up display, heated steering wheel and heated rear outboard seats.

The base engine in the 2019 CX-5 is a 2.5-liter unit with cylinder deactivation, which is a first for a 4-cylinder vehicle in North America and a contributor to the impressive average of 28 mpg. This engine is paired to a 6-speed automatic transmission, with front-wheel drive (FWD) as the default setup; all-wheel drive (AWD) is available. Maximum towing capacity is 2,000 pounds. The new 250-horsepower turbocharged 2.5-liter 4-cylinder engine also links to a 6-speed automatic transmission, with standard all-wheel drive. The new 2.2-liter turbodiesel, standard in the CX-5 Signature, puts out 168 horsepower and a healthy 290-lb-ft of torque. With both of these new powerplants, the new CX-5 is rated to tow 3,500 pounds.2.5-liter inline-4187 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm186 lb-ft of torque @ 3,250 rpm (4,000 rpm for AWD models)EPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/31 mpg (FWD), 24/30 mpg (AWD)2.5-liter turbocharged inline-4250 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm (93-octane premium gasoline; 227 horsepower with regular)310 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/28 mpg (FWD), 22/27 mpg (AWD)2.2-liter turbocharged diesel inline-4168 horsepower @ 4,000 rpm290 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/30 (AWD)

Add the Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) to a destination charge of $ 995 and the 2019 Mazda CX-5 range starts at $ 25,345 for the front-drive Sport model. As mentioned, though, a better buy is the Touring trim ($ 27,610) that brings more convenience and safety equipment. All-wheel drive is an extra $ 1,400. At the other extreme, the new Signature trim level starts at $ 37,885. The most affordable CX-5 with the new turbo 2.5-liter engine is the Grand Touring Reserve, an all-wheel-drive model with an MSRP of $ 34,870. The new diesel, available in the summer of 2019, has not been priced yet. We do know that the diesel comes with a zero-cost maintenance program lasting for two years or 30,000 miles. The Honda CR-V doesn’t reach quite the same degree of luxury, but prices of its lower trims are similar to the CX-5’s. The Toyota RAV4 (all-new for 2019) is in the same financial ballpark. The Ford Escape, Nissan Rogue, Kia Sportage, Hyundai Tucson (updated for 2019) and Subaru Forester start lower. Check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for their new CX-5. Resale values hold up well, but the CR-V is king of that particular hill.

Mazda CX-5 Overview and History

A new generation Mazda CX-5 crossover has been introduced in late 2016, the car now being sportier, better looking and more equipped. The CX-5 is the first of a new generation of Mazda products that adopt the full range of Mazda’s breakthrough SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY and the new design theme, ‘KODO - Soul of Motion.’ The Mazda CX-5 evolves Mazda’s hallmark fun-to-drive character and will be progressively introduced to global markets from early 2012. Developed around the full range of SKYACTIV® TECHNOLOGY — including all-new Mazda gasoline and diesel engines, manual and automatic transmissions, body and chassis — the CX-5 delivers precise response and a high-quality ride matched with outstanding environmental and safety performance.
Born as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. in 1920, Mazda started out as a machine-tool manufacturing plant but quickly turned to making vehicles. The first Mazda car, called the Mazda-Go, a three-wheeled truck appeared in 1931, which a year later began exporting to China. This was the only car that was in production until the Second World War broke out when Mazda factories began making rifles.

After the war, part of the Mazda plant served as the Hiroshima prefecture for a short while. Production and export resumed in 1949 with the same 3-wheeled truck. The first 4-wheel truck was the Mazda Romper, introduced in 1958.

The first pasenger car came in 1960, the Mazda R360 Coupe. Mazda's first partnership with a foreign company was the one in 1961 with NSU/Wankel with which it produced and developed rotary engines. This was done in order to differentiate Mazda from the other Japanese companies. To this day, Mazda is the only manufacturer of Wankel rotary engines as the other companies (NSU and Citroen) gave up on the design sometime during the 70s.

Mazda's paid off because its models quickly gained a name as being powerful yet light vehicles. The most successful series for Mazda were going to be the R100 and the RX models which eventually led to the company's development.

Starting with 1970 Mazda began eyeing the biggest market for its cars, the United States. It opened up a North American branch under the name Mazda North American Operations and it proved to have the winning recipe. In fact, Mazda models were so successful that the company even produced a pick up truck based on the rotary engine.

With 1973 and the oil crisis, the thirsty rotary engines that Mazda used caused a drop in sales but the Japanese company hadn't really given up on piston engines so it was able to use a 4 cylinder model on its cars. The smaller Familia series and Capella were born.

But Mazda wasn't about to give up on its sporty cars and it decided to develop a parallel plant that would produce cars outside the mainstream. In 1978, they came up with the very sporty RX7 and later with the RX8. The piston engine also showed up on Mazda's line up with the MX-5 or Miata.

In 1979 Ford Motor Company became an investor in Mazda with a 27% share after the financial decline of the company. Later on, in the 80s, Ford acquired 20% more of the company after a few joint ventures like using the Familia series platform for the Laser and Escort models as well as building the new Probe and the Mazda plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

The 90s started off with another joint venture with Ford on the 1991 Explorer which turned out to be a bad investment for the Japanese while the Americans reaped all the benefits. Following its fascination with alternative engine designs, Mazda started developing the Miller cycle engine in 1995.

The latter part of the 90s proved to be not so profitable for the Japanese as the financial crisis hit in 1997, during which Ford acquired 39.9% of the company. From that point on, the collaboration between the two marques intensified, sharing engine design and even some platforms (Ford Escape with Mazda Tribute and the new generation Ford Focus with the Mazda Axela).

For the future, Mazda intends to maintain its forward thinking and experimental technology, by developing a hydrogen-powered car. The prototype has so far reached a 200 kilometers autonomy.

2019 Mazda CX-5 Consumer Reviews

hypocrisywrongful,
Great style but unreliable and long repair times
We own the 2019 CX-5 Grand Touring. Took vehicle in for exhaust odor when stopped. The vehicle with only 20k miles was at the dealer for 7 weeks for a cylinder head leak and parts were not available. After they removed engine they determined lifters were needed as well. Again only 20k miles. In addition, the radio constantly freezes up and won't play XM music. Have to do a hard reset to get the radio to work. It has had updates done at the dealer several times but does not resolve the issue. Its a shame because we love the body style and interior other than the really poorly placed rear heated seats buttons that are easily accidentally applied since they are in the center rear armrest. I asked to speak with a factory rep and have called Mazda directly with no response. My 5th and probably last Mazda.
portholespace,
Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve is fantastic!
The Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve is a fantastic car with comfortable interior and top-of-the-line performance features. Its turbo engine is responsive yet fuel efficient with regular unleaded. The driving experience is superb with AWD, heads-up display projected onto the windshield, adjustable cruise control that will automatically slow to pace behind slower cars that come within radar distance and then the Grand Touring Reserve promptly accelerates to resume the set cruise speed once traffic clears within the selected distance for sensitivity. Brakes automatically engage for collision avoidance. Headlights pivot left and right as you turn around corners to illuminate the road instead of neighbor houses. Heated steering wheel and heated seats in front and rear for cold winter days; ventilated front seats and digital temperature-controlled AC for my driving in Arizona heat. Both front seats are power adjusted and the driver's seat readjusts automatically to the seating preference for up to two different sized drivers depending on which of two key fob's is used. Navigation system is flawless. Their Bose 10-speaker sound system is superb. After loving my prior 2016 Mazda Grand Touring, we upgraded into the 2019 Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring Reserve and could not be more pleased.
tungadalsepia,
Best car I have owned for the price.
Quiet on the highway, great gas mileage in town or on the highway, fun to drive and the touring model has plenty of attractive extras. Would recommend this car to friends.
spraychicago,
Amazing car... if you're under 5'8"
Don't get me wrong. The Mazda CX-5 is an amazing car for the price. You get a very sporty SUV, that's luxury, compact, efficient and very agile, and super fast. It's very sporty for an SUV and really if you want to you can drive it like a sedan. The torque vectoring, handling, balance and weight transfer is truly top notch. It's amazing. Mazda took a great engineering design in the torque vectoring and realized it PERFECTLY, and I am truly amazed at times by how quickly it can change direction for being an SUV. With all that being said: This car is MISERABLE if you are above around 5'8" tall, and of larger stature. Especially if you go on long drives. I am 6'1" and very broad shouldered, and fairly muscular at around 180 pounds. The seats are extremely narrow, the steering wheel does not go far enough up or out, and the seat does not lower to where I can feel the center of gravity of the car. I drive for periods for around 300 miles for road trips, outdoor expeditions etc. and I CANNOT drive this car for the life of me with any modicum of comfort for that length of time. Trust me, I've tried everything. Every conceivable seat and steering wheel position imaginable. It appears to me that they engineered this car for people of a certain height, namely under 5'8" or so and if you're tall or wide it's just painfully uncomfortable. I have developed back problems from driving this car. I will say it again: DO NOT BUY THIS CAR IF YOURE TALLER THAN 5'8. You will hate your life. It's really a shame because this car is awesome. Maybe the CX-9 is better, or something, but this car is for shorter people. Period. I wish somebody would have warned me before I bought it but it is what it is now. Great car. Just not for tall people. Hope you heed this if you're tall.
playtimelearning,
Good value for the money.
Styling and Soul Red make this a nice looking SUV . Mileage is good for a snappy 4 cyl! Love the heated/cooled seats and the heated steering wheel in the winter. The navigation system seems a little slow and not real easy to use but adequate .
peltdetrital,
I HATE THIS CAR
This car runs & drives well, which is expected from any late model car, but there have been continuous problems with bluetooth and Sirius radio as well as the alarm. My bluetooth keeps unpairing with my phone. I fix it & it happens again. If I can get my phone to stream Sirius radio (which I already have in my 2010 Toyota (works great)) it is a miracle. This is another one of these things that works, then doesn't. Bought a new Samsung android phone and now more problems than ever. My alarm goes off on a whim and won't stop no matter what I do. Yesterday I had to leave the key in the car to stop it. These may be little things to some people but are important to me.
cloodcraniac,
It’s nice
I purchased this car in June 2019! I absolutely loved it until I blew a gasket. How in the world does such a new car blow a gasket so soon. The car is perfect for me because I’m 5’5’ but I wouldn’t recommend it to someone taller. It’s perfect for a single person with no kids.
packagerooted,
best for the money
Have the Signature model for 1 year 2 months.Low mileage due to pandemic.Great handling solid feel comfortable seats.Maybe too small for some but there are just two of us.One complaint is the infotainment system which is slow and confusing.Have a 2020 Avalon and their system much easier. Two cheap outs, no kick plates.engine prop rod.
addiebecome,
Test drive this before considering the new Rav 4!
We were intending on the new Rav4 (2020) after driving it though, we weren't very impressed. We drove the CRV and it was much more comfortable, but the handling was very "squishy." We decided to try the CX5 without really thinking we'd buy one. After the test drive, we were immediately sold. We ended up buying a 2019 with 5k and got a great deal. This SUV is made in Japan and boy can you can tell. The CX5 blows away the rivals when it comes to interior quality, road noise, and handling. Reliability is right up there with the Toyota and Honda. It really feels like more like a luxury model SUV. We are so happy with the purchase!
peshawarkiss,
You won't go wrong with this one.
I've owned this vehicle for two years. On the Interstate 90 and 15 I got 40 miles to the gallon provided I kept under 70 mph. At 80mph the average dropped to just above 32 due the Skyactiv cylinder shutoff. When it comes on and off is not noticeable. In the city I get between 24 to 32 mpg. I drove from Everett, Wa. to Havre, Mt. (770 miles) 12 hour trip. The seats were well supported, I was not fatigued in the least. There is lots of storage space, the instrument cluster is well laid out and the hands off feature works well to keep your eyes on the road when adjusting the radio. The safety features are something you find in cars costing twice as much. It handles really good for an SUV. The only issue I have is that MAZDA has a very limited body color selection (pretty minor Huh)! Great car! Maybe the best I've ever own, especially for its value.
mourneinvention,
A real difference all around in a great way
I owned a Honda Crv and changed to the CX5 Touring and what a a smart move. so much more style a comfort. I own the 2019 CX% love how it handles a quite it is. Very solid feel. Might need a little more power. My main issue is the climate control system, the person who design should get a new job. Because i don't think i ever driven a car. it sits real low hard to adjust setting and so hard to see. Very hard to use this car would be 5 stars all the way around, but i can't believe the location of the Climate Control. I will buy again
neogenedealt,
Magnificent, Elegant, Utilitarian
You get in the driver's seat and set your seat height, distance from pedals, backseat incline and tilt/telescope the wheel to you liking. And the car immediately feels like it has welcomed you, and it belongs to you. The best value for the money has got to be the Touring Trim with the Preferred Package and All Wheel Drive. You can save a bunch of money buying and installing all the accessories yourself, you'll know which ones you want and won't waste money on things you don't. Soul Crystal Red is gorgeous, you'll find yourself staring at it, how is the color so deep and rich ... you'll wonder, and you'll smile. You should probably stop there at the Touring level, if you have money to spare, either make the stretch to reach a turbo model, or get some equipment you're most interested in (roof rails are nice, towing strength is also nice - and same with turbo or not). All the engines are fun and spirited to drive, you won't be "missing out" on the turbo, you'll get better mpg and a more robust/less stressed system. 187 hp to 250 hp is a big jump, but it's an SUV and rollovers do happen, with such a gorgeous car, you'll want to drive safely. Speaking of which, safety features are excellent, crash safery ratings are excellent ... why are you still reading this, your cx 5 is waiting patiently for you and wants to help you and protect you !!!
frarchedalfred,
Great handling, performance and looks but...
I give an A to the CX-5’s handling, performance and looks, but a D to the dash controls (radio, AC/heater, etc.) I wonder if whoever designed the controls actually drives a car. Difficult to use while driving, even after four months and 5,000 miles. Too bad Mazda went with this design which falls way short of the vehicle’s good points.
ivanhoebrewery,
A very compelling compact crossover.
I really enjoy my CX-5. I chose to downsize from a midsize. It is plenty spacious for two people. Very refined, substantial feeling structure. Excellent exterior styling and high quality quiet interior, excellent driving manners makes it very fun to drive, like driving a German premium model, 2.5 4cyl provides good power, excellent transmission. Has a great Bose Stereo System, bright LED lights, excellent driving aids, and has very good gas mileage - averaging 28-29 in mixed driving. The CX-5 is definitely worth your test. The smaller size is better suited for couples or families (no more than two kids) not needing car seats. Interior storage is just decent enough, there is no panoramic sunroof option. The CX-5 premium feel makes it a pleasure to drive.
stararticle,
saved me
My 2019 CX-5 MAZDA saved me in a car accident, the insurance company totaled the car, huge crash ,i walked away almost unscathed....I'm replacing it with another Mazda CX-5, 100% safe for you and your family.
cocoillegal,
Great value, fun to drive
My wife owns an Audi and when it came time to buy a car for myself I considered the Q-5 until I checked out the Mazda with Signature trim. Like the Audi the CX-5 was fun to drive and very quiet on the road, but similarly equipped Mazda was thousands less than the Audi. I was very impressed with the fit and styling of the Mazda. It is a little smaller inside than some of the other compact SUV's but plenty large enough for my wife and I. The Mazda will become our new ski car.
raddedollhouse,
as good as any.
I leased this SUV over the European vehicles that I usually get because of the the overall value. The Mazda with same features and options cost $10,000 LESS than the Audi,BMW, and Mercedes in the same class "compact SUV" The feel of the Mazda is really solid,a well built SUV. I am missing nothing from the much more expensive European models.
ouncesubpanel,
Uncomfortable
The bucket seats in the CX-5 are very uncomfortable for a taller adult person. They are made for smaller people and are unbearable for any rides over 30 minutes. This car went back in trade too early costing me money to purchase a more comfortable Honda CR-V.
sunnycomma,
mmmm... okay car (Grand Touring)
This is my first SUV, so I am not used to spending so much money on gas. on average I get 24.9 MPG. The performance is only worth it when the it's on SPORT mode. I drive in the highway everyday and I feel like I have to step on the gas to get the car to move and pass other vehicles. I wish it performed better. The blind spot systems are not as accurate as a Honda. They are slow to detect if a car is there or not...but on the positive side, I get a lot of compliments for the looks and features of the car.

shriekpawing,
Great value for money
High end looking, best bang for your back. Superior quality and user experience than direct competitors. Feels luxurious, it’s very spacious, and design (exterior and interior) is the best. It has everything you need from a luxury car without having to pay extra for brand. It’s true that you could change the logo for Audi or BMW and you would believe it is a car with their brand, for how good it looks and feels.
sistonalumni,
What a Car
Real simple to me I traded in my Honda CRV gor the CX5. everyone thought I was crazy but once I sat in I knew this was the car more room in the front seats and really nice console. The heated sets are great my only complaint is the heating and cooling system very hard to figure very backwards and and put very low hard to use. so much quieter than Honda while driving. I think there around same price I have the touring model and was worth every penny to upgrade. power is just fine no issues with that. gas mileage so far is less than Honda very happy
barbonboxy,
Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring is a joy to drive
We found the Mazda CX-5 Grand Touring to be an amazing vehicle. We looked at comparably-equipped Honda CR-V, Subaru Forester, Toyota RAV4 and Nissan Rogue but the did compare to the C-5's handling, interior layout and features. The key features in the Mazda CX-5 that made the difference: active driving display, iActiveSense safety features, BOSE sound system, 40/20/40 rear fold-down seats
crumpetenclose, 11/08/2019
"Love this SUV!"
My wife and I fell in love with the styling of this SUV and the mazda wasn't even on our list at first. Once we drove it, we were hooked. 40,000 miles later, not one issue and its' great. couldn't be happier, except a little more pep, but its okay.
