With its appealing mix of Volvo safety and Scandinavian style, the 2007 Volvo V50 deserves to be on your test-drive list if you're in the market for a small wagon with a premium feel.

For singles, couples and small families who are realistic about how much interior room and all-terrain capability they really need (or don't need), small, premium wagons like the 2007 Volvo V50 can be an appealing option. This compact Volvo costs about the same as a well-loaded Explorer, yet offers trendy styling, crisp handling dynamics and a long list of safety features. It also has a lot less cargo space, of course, but its tidy dimensions make it easy to maneuver and keep its fuel consumption in the mid 20-mpg range. The same is true of just about any other compact wagon, but none can match the V50's distinctive, Scandinavian-inspired design.

There wasn't much to the design of the V50's predecessor, the V40. It was a blandly styled wagon with little penchant for performance. Introduced for the 2005 model year, the Volvo V50 has always been much more than that. It remains one of the sharpest-looking wagons on the road, and its unusual interior design, which features an ultra-thin center stack, looks fresh and contemporary three years into the model cycle. In addition, the V50's driving dynamics are unlike any other wagon in the Volvo lineup: It's not just about getting to your destination safely; it's about having a little fun along the way. The standard suspension setup offers a solid balance of ride comfort and handling precision, while the optional sport suspension trades away some comfort to sharpen the wagon's reflexes through the corners. Two engines are offered as well. Power from the base 2.4-liter inline five-cylinder engine in the V50 2.4i is no more than adequate, but the 218-horsepower turbocharged engine in the T5 model gives the V50 ample vigor in any situation.

Much as we like the package Volvo has put together, we can't help but note that Audi has found a way to do it less expensively. The entry-level A3 2.0T wagon has a bit less cargo room, but offers considerably more power for about the same price as the base V50 2.4i. The Volvo is still the cheaper way to go if you want all-wheel drive, but at this price, the slightly larger, and nearly as luxurious, Subaru Legacy merits consideration as well. However, for buyers determined to drive small, the 2007 Volvo V50 wagon is one of the better choices at the $ 30,000 mark.

The compact 2007 Volvo V50 wagon comes in two trim levels: 2.4i and T5. All 2.4 models are front-wheel drive; T5 buyers can get all-wheel drive as well. Standard items on the V50 2.4i include 16-inch alloy wheels, heated mirrors, manual climate control with a pollen filter, a CD player and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with telescopic adjustment. Step up to the V50 T5 and you get an eight-way power-adjustable driver seat, automatic climate control, a cargo-area 12-volt power outlet, aluminum trim, a trip computer and steering wheel-mounted audio controls.

Most of the popular options for the Volvo V50 must be purchased in packages. The Select Package for the 2.4i adds roof rails; a moonroof; power driver seat; a 12-speaker Dolby sound system with an MP3-capable in-dash CD changer; an auxiliary input jack for MP3 players; wood-grain interior inlays and a trip computer. For V50 T5 buyers, there's the Premium Package, which provides leather upholstery, a power passenger seat, driver-seat memory, the moonroof and the roof rails. A sport-tuned suspension and 17-inch wheels can be had if you select the Sport Package (2.4i) or Dynamic Trim Package (front-wheel-drive T5). Available on either trim, the Climate Package adds heated seats, rain-sensing wipers and headlamp washers.

Stand-alone extras include leather upholstery and a ground-effects body kit for the 2.4i, and bi-xenon headlights, keyless startup and a navigation system for the T5. Sirius satellite radio is available on all V50s.

Engines are specific to each V50 model. The base 2.4i gets a 168-hp, normally aspirated 2.4-liter five-cylinder, while the V50 T5 upgrades to a turbocharged, 2.5-liter five-cylinder that generates 218 hp. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard on 2.4i and front-wheel-drive T5s. All-wheel-drive T5 wagons feature a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, with the five-speed automatic offered as an option.

Antilock disc brakes and stability control are standard on all V50s. All models include both front-seat side-impact airbags and full-length head curtain airbags, along with whiplash-reducing seats in all outboard positions. Volvo's OnCall telematics system is also standard, and built-in child booster seats are optional. The NHTSA has not crash tested the 2007 Volvo V50, but its crashworthiness should be similar to the S40 sedan, which earned perfect five-star ratings in side-impact tests, along with four stars for driver protection and five stars for the front passenger in frontal-impact tests. In IIHS frontal-offset testing, the S40 earned a top rating of "Good"; in IIHS side-impact testing, the car rated "Acceptable."

Handling is crisp and entertaining, though the standard tires are taxed by more aggressive cornering. An unfortunate downside to the V50's sharp reflexes is that cruising comfort suffers a bit, particularly with the optional sport suspension. The 2.4i model offers adequate if uninspiring acceleration, so driving enthusiasts should head straight for the spirited T5 model. The optional all-wheel-drive system is a good bet for buyers seeking a relatively affordable, premium-brand wagon that can brave the winter snows.

Scandinavian to the core, the V50's interior is a study in simple elegance. Especially eye-catching is the slim center stack, which replaces the typical centerpiece clutter with spare lines and a "less is more" aesthetic that gives the car a thoroughly modern feel while opening up valuable storage space. The ergonomically designed seats are available in different upholstery types, though we like the standard "T-Tec" cloth best of all. Adults will find adequate legroom in both the front and rear. A 60/40-split-folding rear seat adds versatility, should you need to haul very long items. Maximum cargo capacity is 62.9 cubic feet -- 7 cubes more than you get in the Audi A3.

Although the basic driving experience differs little from Volvo's S40 sedan, the V50 feels more serious and solid. Both are civilized, quiet and spirited compacts, especially with the more potent turbocharged engine. On snow-packed and icy surfaces the all-wheel-drive V50 clings with confidence. Despite the V50's refinement, and due to the standard Sport Suspension, the ride in the all-wheel-drive T5 can get rough on harsher surfaces. Even rolling through moderate imperfections may feel a little jittery, particularly to people who value plush comfort over crisp handling. Nimble in urban settings and stable on the road, the V50 T5 reacts quickly to the steering wheel, perhaps more quickly than less-enthusiastic drivers might find comfortable.

All-Wheel DriveAnyone in the snow belt or who drives frequently on wet or slippery surfaces should appreciate the merits of all-wheel drive. Too bad it isn't available in the non-turbocharged 2.4i model.Turbocharged Engine in T5Like the all-wheel-drive system, Volvo's turbocharged engine does its job eagerly and effortlessly, without attracting undue attention to itself.

Basic in nature, the V50's interior reflects the spartan themes popular in Scandinavian automobiles. The ultra-slim center console is claimed to be the first of its kind and is available with optional aluminum facing. One drawback to the design is the limitations it places on installing an aftermarket audio unit. Volvo promotes "ergonomically designed" seating, including 60/40-split folding rear seats. Some controls on the console aren't quite as logical as they first appear. Though roomy enough up front, the V50 conveys a cozy sensation. Cargo space totals 37.4 cubic feet with the rear seat up and 62.9 cubic feet with the seat folded.

Built in Belgium rather than Sweden, the V50 closely resembles other, larger Volvo models. Up front it's a virtual twin to the S40 sedan. Both Volvos are related to the European Ford Focus and the Mazda3. The V50 is an evolution of the sportswagon "design language" that began with the larger V70 family wagon, but brandishes some "aggressive lines." Certain design characteristics are borrowed from classic Volvos, including the sporty 1800ES of the 1960s. Intelligent Design Architecture includes eight "exceptionally rigid" cross members for enhanced side-impact protection.

In basic 2.4i form the V50 has a five-speed automatic transmission, air conditioning, alarm, immobilizer, remote keyless entry, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, rear wiper/washer, rear fog lamps, Dynamic Stability and Traction Control and single CD player. Side-impact and curtain-style airbags are standard. In addition to a turbocharged engine, the T5 adds a six-speed manual transmission (all-wheel-drive only) and eight-way power driver's seat. Alloy wheels hold standard 16-inch tires and the V50's anti-lock braking (ABS) incorporates electronic brake-force distribution and Brake Assist for more effective panic stops. A Dynamic Sport Suspension is standard on the all-wheel-drive T5.

Many of the V50's most desirable options are bundled into packages. The base 2.4i, for example, offers a Climate Package with heated seats, headlamp washers and rain-sensing wipers. The Select Package adds a power glass moonroof, six-disc CD/MP3 player, upgraded speakers, trip computer and a power driver's seat. Stand-alone options include leather seating and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. The T5 offers bi-xenon headlamps, sport steering wheel, sport suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, power passenger seat, DVD navigation and Keyless Drive remote start.

The V50's 2.4-liter in-line five-cylinder engine provides solid, if unspectacular performance. The sports-minded T5 is equipped with a turbocharged version of the same engine, offering 50 additional horsepower and, more importantly, better torque for quicker acceleration.2.4-liter in-line 5168 horsepower @ 6000 rpm170 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/29 (manual), 22/31 (automatic)2.5-liter in-line 5 Turbocharged218 horsepower @ 5000 rpm236 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/30 (FWD), 19/27 (AWD manual), 20/28 (AWD automatic)

The front-wheel-drive 2.4i Sport Wagon has a Manufacturer's Suggest Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 27,385. Moving up to the turbocharged T5 boosts the MSRP to $ 30,285, while the all-wheel-drive T5 starts at $ 30,885. Before you begin negotiating price, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price. It shows the typical transaction price being paid for the V50 in your area. As the V50 doesn't have many competitors, it holds a slightly better-than-average resale value, although vehicles such as Audi's new A3, Subaru's WRX wagon and the Mazda 3 s hatchback all offer superior expected resale values at 24-, 36- and 48-month intervals.

2007 Volvo V50 Future Generations

Volvo V50 Overview and History

Although it was refreshed in 2008, the V50 only came with a few modifications which don't affect too much the performances provided by the car. Volvo V50 was first launched in 2003 and was introduced by the Swedish company as a replacement for the popular V40, a model which was unveiled in 1995.
AB Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. But it did start out as a car manufacturer, founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main purpose of the company was to produce the safest cars possible, following the death of Assar's wife in a car crash. The automaker was founded April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).

The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. Volvo AB began to function on the 10th of August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, started production of 10 prototypes and set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Its success on the market helped Volvo buy out their engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car producer. By 1931, it was already returning its first dividend to shareholders.

After it reached a production milestone of 10,000 cars in May 1932, Volvo then targeted a new demographic segment, aiming to make their cars cheaper, a car “for the people”. This was going to be the PV 51 which came out in 1936 which was a smaller version of the PV36.

The PV444 was one of the most significant cars of the war era, the first true small car, a mixture of American flair and European size, it would become a resonant success and the best sold model throughout the 60s. The P1800 was Volvo's first sports car, made in the early 60s and it was so popular that it was featured in the hit TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore.

Safety and quality were still paramount for Volvo and that's why the 240 series which replaced the 140 had even more safety innovations in that department, like crumple zones, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. Together with the smaller 340 models, they would make for most of the sales during the 70s and 80s for Volvo.

The 90s brought with them a totally new model, the 850, a front-wheel drive, executive car which won numerous awards for handling and safety features. By now, productions costs were mounting up and Volvo was one of the few independent producers out there, after a proposed deal with Renault fell through in 1993. This forced the company to seek new marketing strategies and that's how the sleeker S40 and V40 models were introduced in the factory's production line.

The new models brought a breath of fresh air, just like the C70 coupe and convertible, which are responsible for revitalizing the Volvo image while keeping in tune with the old tradition of safety and quality.

The buyout of Volvo Cars was announced on January 28, 1998. Until then, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo (the commercial vehicles group). In the following year acquisition for Volvo Cars by American car maker Ford Motor Co. was completed at a price of $ 6.45 billion USD. Volvo used the funds from the sale of the automobile division to finance the purchase of Scania, another leading Swedish truck manufacturer, but the deal was stopped for competition reasons by the European Union. Instead Volvo acquired the commercial vehicles division of French Renault and the American truck manufacturer Mack Trucks (which was owned by Renault at the time). As part of the arangement to buy Renault Trucks, the former parent company, Renault, bought in turn 20 percent in shares in AB Volvo. Among the reasons why Volvo took the initiative to sell the automobile manufacturing was the increasing development costs for new car models, coupled with the fact that it was a relatively small producer. The strategy was instead to grow as a truck manufacturer where it had a stronger market position.

Volvo Automotive's motto is "Volvo for life" attributed to the reliability and safety of their cars. Volvo means "I roll" in Latin. Combined with their company symbol, (commonly mistaken for the male symbol) which actually stands for iron ore and according to the company, represents "Rolling Strength".

2007 Volvo V50 Consumer Reviews

Good Car
Mine has 156,000KM on it. Bought it as a demo with 22,000KM (Canada). It's been good. Here is a list of things that needed repair: 1. Ambient temperature gauge wouldn't work causing the A/C to malfunction. This required 3 trips to the dear to fix it 2. A/C Air Compressor died around 130,000km 3. Both wheel bearings needed to be replaced 4. Both front shocks needed to be replaced 5. One day while driving the car just full on shut down. Had it towed and it was a fuel line sensor I think that's about it. So only left me stranded once. Overall, a pretty good car.

V50 Problems
I have driven Volvo for twenty years. I traded my 1994 940 in 2007 for the V50, Big Mistake! Within the first 45 days problems began.I was told that the computer didn't find any problems. After monthly visits and 1.5 years the dealership took me seriously & VOLVO created a download to correct the car computer, things seemed better. Then 6 months later the horn began to honk for periods of 5 miles. Once again I was told that the computer didn't show a problem. Unable to deal with the monthly trips to the dealership I traded for a Mercedes. I feel like a traitor, but apparently there are problems that exist that the computer doesn't show.
robbriefcase, 10/21/2008
Follow up
Had the car for just under a year and 16000 kms (10,000 miles). No mechanical problems at all, I have only done two scheduled maintenances on the car. My longest trip has been about 500 kms (300 mi) and the car performed very well. In town mileage has been around 24 mpg (US) and highway mileage in the mid 30s. Service at the dealership has been very good. The factory Continental tires were replaced at 36000 kms and replaced with Nokians. The factory tires never seem to last too long. Still very much enjoying my first Volvo.

MIGHTY MITE V50
Superbly designed vehicle that is an absolute blast to drive. Mine is the "Full Monty" T5 AWD with buttery-smooth 6 speed manual. Seems like every design and engineering detail was painstakingly tested and mulled over to best benefit the driver. Gives me 85% of the performance I expect from my '85 Porsche 911. I can haul my ever-growing toddler son in his Recaro sport seat and my two 90 lb. Weimaraners (very tall, large dogs). A great-looking vehicle as well that really grabs on-lookers' attention. Most people think of AWD for icy, snowy environments, but here in L.A., I like it for added performance - goodbye torque steer, understeer, oversteer, etc. A total beast.

2009 Volvo V50
"Reliable, good towing, safe small station wagon"
I bought this vehicle new. Sleek looking even after 11 years on the road the paint job still shiny. Engine is smooth and reliable. The car is not complicate for self service. I did oil, transmission fluid, serpentine belt change myself by just watching youtube. I did, however, replace the alternator, both front drive shafts when the boots cracked, brake rotors and pads, catalytic converter when it throws code at about 120k miles, and both oxygen sensors myself and I am not even close to a mechanic, all by watching youtube and borrow tools from local autopart stores. The car still runs like new. I recently tow a trailer with broken concrete weights 1460 lbs to a landfill with no trouble, though not a fast run. Love the folded back seats and hatch back to throw in my inflatable kayak, bicycles, and stuffs, even make a good bed on long trip. Oh ya, I also tow my boat with it and it was the only station wagon tow boat at any lake parking I went to. Only complain is the A/C takes about 10 minutes to cool when outside was 110F, and it cycles after about 5-6 hours, means you will have about 30 minutes warm air even a/c is on.

2005 Volvo V50
"As close to perfect as automotively possible!"
I would keep my V50 forever if it weren't for my failing depth perception. This has been the bestest car I've ever owned. The seats alone have me completely spoiled. I've been looking for a new car with all the driver assistance beeps because I keep bumping into things in tight spaces like parking lots and garages, but there's nothing out there that can compare to my Volvo! And the new Volvo's are out of my price range. What to do?

"RESPONSIVE and so fun to drive."
We love this car--it has been such a wonderful ride for us, especially when our children were smaller. We are looking now for a minivan-type vehicle because as our boys get older is it getting a little cramped. It has great pickup, and the interior styling can't be beat. Great soundsystem, as well.
