With all-wheel drive, plenty of features and a roomy cabin, the 2007 Suzuki SX4 is the best small Suzuki to come out in recent memory. For buyers who need an inexpensive all-weather vehicle, this hatchback is worth a look.

If you're interested in a small and inexpensive new car, 2007 is a great year for you. In response to higher fuel prices and changing consumer tastes, automakers have released a bevy of new subcompacts, many of them featuring upscale features and truly useful interiors. Of this new brood, Suzuki's new SX4 offers a few distinct features that make it worthy of your attention.

The 2007 Suzuki SX4, which replaces last year's larger and more expensive Aerio SX, is an all-new four-door hatchback. For power, Suzuki equips the SX4 with a reworked version of the 2.3-liter engine in the Aerio sedan. Displacing 2.0 liters, this four-cylinder is rated to produce 143 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque. The Honda Fit and Toyota Yaris don't even top 110 hp, while the Nissan Versa offers only 122.

In the subcompact segment, the SX4's main calling card is its standard all-wheel drive. This three-mode system offers drivers a choice of front-wheel drive only, an "automatic" mode that splits the power on the fly, or full-lock AWD at speeds up to 36 mph. There's not enough torque to make it much of a performance enhancement on dry pavement, but it should come in handy for those living in the snowbelt.

For those on a tight budget, Suzuki happily points out that the SX4 is the least expensive new car you can buy with all-wheel drive. Thankfully, that's not the only positive attribute to the 2007 Suzuki SX4. It also has a slick interior design, sufficient features and, thanks to its larger overall size, plenty of room. The biggest negative to this vehicle is probably its weight. Being a few hundred pounds heavier than the competition negates the advantage of the SX4's larger engine. It also hurts fuel economy to a large degree. With that in mind, we think the majority of buyers will be better off in the Fit, our top choice for this segment. But the SX4's appeal is apparent. For those wanting an alternative, especially one with all-wheel drive, the SX4 is a good choice.

The 2007 Suzuki SX4 is a small four-door hatchback. Standard features include 16-inch wheels, keyless entry, air-conditioning, a CD/MP3 player and full power features. For the SX4 Sport trim, Suzuki adds automatic climate control, cruise control, heated outside mirrors and a SmartPass keyless entry and engine-start feature. The Sport also has a premium audio system with a six-disc CD changer, a subwoofer and steering-wheel-mounted audio controls.

Power comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 143 hp and 136 lb-ft of torque. It's connected to a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. All SX4s are equipped with all-wheel drive. Fuel economy for the automatic, at 24 mpg city/30 mpg highway, is significantly below average for the subcompact class.

The 2007 Suzuki SX4 comes standard with antilock disc brakes, a tire-pressure monitor, front seat side airbags and head-protecting side curtain airbags for all outboard passengers. Stability control, an unusual feature for this class, comes standard on the SX4 Sport but is not available on the base model.

Though it has a powerful engine for its class, the Suzuki SX4 is no hot rod. A bulky curb weight negates any advantage and acceleration is no better than other, less powerful competitors. The extra pounds help give the SX4 a smooth, refined ride quality, however, and the standard antilock disc brakes don't seem to mind the extra heft. Big bumps barely upset the suspension and the sizable 16-inch tires provide solid grip.

The SX4 has one of the best-looking cabins in the segment. It's a simple layout with large, three-dial climate control knobs that sit just below a compact, well-labeled CD stereo. The analog gauges are easy to read, the switchgear feels good and the materials look better than you might expect. In back is a 60/40-split rear seat that can be lowered and tumbled forward. With the rear seat stowed, 38 cubic feet of cargo room is available.

The SX4 Sport is one nimble little car. The rigid steel body, wide track and fine-tuned chassis deliver efficient stability, responsive handling and minimal body roll, although the dual grab handles might tempt front-seat riders to reach up and use them at speed. Crisp response from the strong 2.0-liter engine and automatic transmission, and the hatchback's tidy size and low weight, combine to encourage enthusiastic driving, even for commuters. The well-designed and highly-tuned front and rear suspension provides a stable, comfortable ride.

All-Wheel DriveThe star of the show is the i-AWD, whose console-mounted switch is just itching to be turned to one of three modes: Two-wheel drive for maximum fuel economy on decent, dry roads; Auto, to control the ratio of power sent to the rear wheels; and Lock mode, for increased traction in snow or mud. The Lock mode is automatically cancelled above 36 miles per hour.Cargo AreaFlip the rear seat down and a cavernous 54 cubic feet of cargo space is available. Coupled with a very wide opening through the fifth door, the trunk area can store bulky items.

At first glance, the interior appears similar to its competitors, until the split rear seatbacks are folded down to reveal an expanse of cargo space that can swallow a couple of boogie boards through the yawning hatch door. The SX4 offers reasonably comfortable room for five passengers - if the rear middle rider is slim. An obviously plastic vertical panel runs down the center of the dash and holds the radio, air conditioning, i-AWD and other control buttons and switches, with extra tabs on the steering wheel. The seating and interior trim are prosaic but the intrinsic beauty of the SX4 is found in its practicality, performance and price.

Suzuki claims the SX4 Sport's front-end was inspired by a traditional Japanese Kabuki mask but, beyond a few bolder creases in its unique soft fascia and revamped grille openings, the headlights, hood and fenders are all identical to the SX4 crossover. The Sport has an arched roofline and relatively large glass area that help create a roomier cabin and afford exceptional outward visibility.

Better-equipped than many compacts in its price range, the SX4's crown jewel is the easy-to-use i-AWD system. Other major features include an exceptional array of safety equipment, with six airbags for side impact, front and side-curtain protection. Also in the package are four-wheel drive anti-lock brakes (ABS) with electronic braking distribution, power windows and locks, air conditioning, AM/FM/MP3/CD audio system, remote entry and tilt wheel. The Sport model adds electronic stability with traction control to assist with front or rear wheel slip, cruise control, power heated mirrors, climate control and a six-disc CD changer audio system.

Do nine speakers and a subwoofer do it for you? They're an option on both models, as is the four-speed automatic transmission. With so much equipment already standard, options for the SX4 are limited to cruise control, and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated stereo controls, which is also part of the standard equipment for the Sport model.

Few cars of this size and price house a 2.0-liter, four-cylinder, 143-horsepower engine (the Fit's horsepower is 109, the xA is 103 and the Versa is 122). Matched to the five-speed manual transmission or the specially-tuned four-speed automatic, which probably will far outsell the manual in the U.S., the SX4's engine and gearbox are exceptionally compatible.2.0-liter in-line 4143 horsepower @ 5800 rpm136 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 24/29 (manual), 24/30 (automatic)

Suzuki has chosen to debut its all-wheel-drive SX4 at a low enough price to attract anyone shopping for a small, fuel-efficient five-door. The base SX4 model has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of around $ 15,000. The Sport starts around $ 16,500. A close competitor is Nissan's Versa, at less than $ 13,000, but its engine is much smaller, with less horsepower, and all-wheel drive is not available. Other key hatchback players include the Honda Fit subcompact, priced at $ 13,850, and the Scion xA, at $ 13,320, neither of which offer all-wheel drive. prices that represent prices consumers are actually paying can differ substantially, so click on prices to compare.

Suzuki SX4 Overview and History

Michio Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki company, started pretty much like Toyota, in the textile industry, producing automated looms in 1909 in a small seacoast village called Hamamatsu. For years, his company was successful, but as time passed, Suzuki realized that he will have to diversify if he wanted to stay in business.

He turned to car making and in 1937 started developing a prototype. Unlike Toyota, who chose to copy an American six-cylinder engine, Suzuki created their own model, a four-cylinder version which put out 13 horsepower. But as WWII began, production of passenger cars became a luxury so Suzuki turned back to loom-making to support Japan's new cotton industry. All that stopped when the market crashed in 1951.

Versatile and ingenious, Suzuki now turned to making engines for bicycles. Unlike other engines that could be mounted to bikes, his motors had a unique feature that allowed the rider to pedal assisted by the engine or completely disconnect the pedals. This captured the attention of the government who granted funds to Suzuki for research.

During the 50s Suzuki released several models: in 1955 the Suzulight SS, a-2 door sedan, the Suzulight SD, a 2-door wagon, the SL – a 3 door sedan and the SP, a pick-up. Out of all of them, the SP proved to be the most successful, being mass-produced and improved during the 60s. Good sales for the SP which was regarded asa commercial type of vehicle, meant that in 1960 the Suzulight Van, the TL, was introduced. Other models from the 60s include the small Suzuki Fronte 360 and the Suzuki Fronte 500.

The famous off-road Jimny came in 1970, which had several variations of chassis and engine. The other cars from the 70s are the Cervo, Alto and the Fronte, also with a number of variations and improvements along the years.

As the 80s rolled in, Suzuki began expanding across the ocean, thanks to a business agreement with GM (in 1981) which gave them an important niche in the western market. Also, they began a partnership with the Indian car company Maruti in 1983 to produce cars there. A year later, in 1984, Suzuki Motor GmbH Deutchland opens up its doors in Heppenheim, Germany.

The Swift and the Vitara models were introduced in the late 80s and Suzuki reached a production of 10 million units. During the 90s, the company continued to expand with factories all over the world and several other 4x4 models were introduced. Right now, Suzuki is listed as being the 12th biggest automotive manufacturer in the world with 35 production facilities all over the Globe and being present in 192 countries.

Makes Sense
There are better choices out there, unless you want AWD with traction and stability control and great gas mileage. What other AWD vehicle gets better than 24/30 mpg? 145 hp does not make this a sports car, but you can safely merge into traffic and keep up. In bad weather, you can pass almost everyone on the road. The list of features on the Sport model is impressive. At less than $ 17,000, I will not nitpick. I also own a 2006 Aerio SX Premium.

Two Thumbs Up!
I've just gone an entire week with my new Suzuki SX4 and I can't be happier with the car! I love the styling, interior features and I keep finding little things here and there that are just so cool. I feel great about buying this car and everyone I've showed it to (and let sit in it and explore) makes the "Hmmm... maybe I need one of these" face. I can see about four more being on the road by the new year. The cost is fantastic for the 'amount of car' you get. I'm especially happy with the AWD on this car. I've not had to use it yet, but I feel confident it'll add to the many safety features.

Great Value!
We looked at Matrix, Yaris, Fit, and Versa and then saw ads for the SX4 with AWD. The value for the price is unbelievable! Even the base model has power locks/windows and ABS and for a fairly small price difference, the Sport model also has traction control, automatic climate control, cruise, and a 6 CD changer with more speakers. The keyless entry and start feature seems very high-end to have on such an economical car. We had not planned to purchase until spring, but when one was delivered exactly like we wanted we didn’t dare wait. I think this car will be “discovered” by a lot of buyers very soon and will become extremely scarce and in demand. It is such a good buy and such fun to drive!

First Review of SX4
I've owned this car for a little over a week. It drives very well. The gas mileage is not as good as, say, the Toyota Yaris, but it's still better than a minivan. It doesn't accelerate as well as I would hope, for having one of the biggest engines of the cars I looked at, but that could improve as the engine breaks in. I feel a lot better knowing that I am driving a safer car, and the SX4 is completely Japanese-made. Overall, I'm happy with the 2007 Suzuki SX4, and if I find any big problems I'll tell you.

"180k miles and we still going strong"
My dad bought this new back in 2008, just to have a cheap fuel efficient car to get him back and forth to work (his truck was a major gas guzzler). He was expecting to have it for a few years, and then sell it for a “cooler” ride. I ended up getting it while in highschool (2011) and have had it ever since (Nov 2019 atm) _______________________________________________ ____COMFORT ________________________________________________ I’m 6ft tall but the front suits me just fine. I have taken it on 7+ Hour road trips without issue. Backseat has no leg room at all. My mom is shorter and hates to drive it. She complains about the headrests in the front making her head push forward, seats uncomfortable. My dad, my sister, and myself have never had issues. But we’re all taller than mom. It didn’t have arm rests for those lengthy drives, unfortunately, but I bought one online that sits into the console, and that did the trick. It’s not well insulated sound wise, so driving at highway speeds 70+ Requires cranking the radio up. I’m sensitive to noise though. I can fit over 200 lbs of grain bags in the very back but it’s a bit squatty looking. More if I fold the seats down. Lot of storage space then. ________________________________________________ POWER_____________________________________________ Shocker, there’s a hamster in the engine. Putting on speed quickly is a challenge, but it’s a 4 cylinder, therefore not surprising. But on the plus side... ECONOMY Car has great gas mileage- which is why my dad bought it in the first place. I drive over 70 miles a day round trip and average 31 mpg. ________________________________________________ DURABILITY___________________________________________ Fuel pump gave up on life around 60k miles. THAT was a fun repair. Front driver side tire pressure gauge was screwed up. Had some issues with the a/c switching off randomly (I live in Florida, and that sucked.) Because I live in FL with the beating sunshine and no cover for my car, just a year ago I got the hood and roof repainted when I began to notice sunspots. The radio crapped out on me maybe three years ago. Had a new one installed with Bluetooth. Aside from that I can’t think of any major issues with it. Had floor mats custom made because I live out in the boonies and track mud and sand everywhere (and was getting sick of vacuuming the rugs constantly). I would like to have a grille guard for it (I have hit deer before) but alas, good luck finding one. Must be custom fit or it’s a no go. ________________________________________________________ Overall I’m very pleased with it. It was my very first car, it’s been paid off for years, and it’s running perfectly. I have no plans to sell it, I’m glad my dad picked it back in 2008, even though I gave him grief for buying “the clown car” at the time.

"Cheap and reliable"
I have had this car for a couple of years and I must say it does the job. It still gets 30 miles to the gallon. I just made a trip from Florida to Arizona with no problem. Everything still works on the car, though It is not what I consider a comfortable car for long trips but as far as reliable and efficient it gets 5 stars. A great commuter. I have done a tune up and regular oil changes and replaced the timing belt and that is it. The parts are cheap. It has some pep, even at 163000 miles. I would not hesitate to buy this little orphan again.

"Fun car with fun features"
The car seem to have pep! The trunk is big and the seats fold down very low. I like the stock stereo and there all these little features that are nice to have than became standard in more cars of the future. There are side air bags and the windows are big plus very tall people can fit in the rear seat or 3 collage students! Overall I am happy with the car and forgot to mention the wheels and disk breaks and performance tires to keep you on the road.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
