With many key improvements, the popular 2007 Cadillac Escalade should remain a fixture in the luxury SUV segment.

After its humble debut back in 1999, Cadillac's Escalade hit its stride in 2002 when the second generation bowed. Just on its own, the truck was impressive thanks to its brash styling, plush seats and powerful V8 engine. The Escalade also received plenty of celebrity-influenced media exposure, which further bolstered its status with consumers. For 2007, a fully redesigned Cadillac Escalade debuts with the promise of more performance, more luxury and more bling than the 2006 model.

Like its lower-line siblings, the Chevrolet Tahoe and GMC Yukon, the 2007 Cadillac Escalade is built on General Motors' all-new, full-size SUV platform. Increased frame stiffness and rigidity, a new suspension design with coil-over shocks up front and a five-link setup out back, and rack and pinion steering (which replaces the old recirculating ball system) make for more composed handling and a smoother ride than before. A 6.2-liter V8 and a six-speed automatic transmission are also new this year. GMC's Yukon Denali also gets this drivetrain, but the Escalade gets an exclusive, high-output version of the V8 good for 403 hp. On the outside, the new Escalade maintains its angular styling, but the overall look is sharper, more cohesive and bears more of a family resemblance to other Cadillac models. Interior fit and finish has also been addressed. The 2007 Escalade's interior is of higher quality than last year's model, and is notable by its soft-touch materials, tight gap tolerances and stylish design.

Considering what's important in the luxury SUV segment -- style, luxury, features, power -- the 2007 Cadillac Escalade excels. Like-priced competitors such as the Infiniti QX56 and Lincoln Navigator may edge it out in one area or another, but overall the Escalade is a superior vehicle. In our opinion, paying a lot more money for a Lexus LX 470 or Land Rover Range Rover is an exercise in diminishing returns. Unless you're an avid off-roader, these vehicles provide little if any worthwhile benefit over the Escalade.

The Cadillac Escalade is a full-size luxury SUV. There is only one trim level, and it's packed with standard equipment. In addition to the usual array of features, the Escalade has a power liftgate, an automatic road-sensing suspension, park assist and even a heated windshield washer fluid feature. Inside, one will find triple-zone climate control, power-adjustable pedals, heated first- and second-row seats, remote starting and OnStar. A Bose 5.1 Surround Sound audio system with 10 speakers, XM Satellite Radio and an in-dash six-CD changer is also standard. Optional are cooled front seats, a heated steering wheel, power-folding second-row seats, a navigation system, rearview camera, moonroof and rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

The 2007 Cadillac Escalade comes standard with a 6.2-liter V8. It pumps out 403 hp and 417 lb-ft of torque and is one of the most powerful engines available in a luxury SUV. Making the most of the new engine's broad power spread is a new six-speed automatic transmission that offers a manual-shift mode. The Escalade is available with rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. All-wheel-drive versions feature a default 40/60 front/rear power split. Escalades seldom go off-road, so there is no dual-range transfer case. Towing capacity for the AWD model is 7,400 pounds.

Stability control (dubbed "StabiliTrak") with a rollover sensor is standard, as are four-wheel antilock disc brakes, side curtain airbags for all outboard occupants, a tire-pressure monitoring system and the OnStar telematics system.

With all that power on tap, the 2007 Cadillac Escalade is quick for a big SUV. Zero-to-60-mph estimates are pegged at less than 8 seconds. And with six gears in the transmission, there is always a surge of power underfoot for swift passing and merging maneuvers. Tuned for a luxurious ride, the Escalade makes no pretense at being sporty. The handling is composed, but this truck's reflexes are muted. Around town, a relatively tight 39-foot turning circle makes parking a bit easier. Aimed for the horizon on an interstate, there aren't many better cruisers, as the ride is notably quiet and the supple suspension smothers the bumps without feeling sloppy when the turns come up.

The Escalade's two-tone dash has graceful lines that easily accommodate a large, colorful navigation screen and faux walnut inlays (although at this price, they should be real wood). The nav screen has a user-friendly touchscreen interface, and all controls are easy to find and use. Soft-touch surfaces are everywhere, as they should be in this class, but there are still a few cheap plastics in the rear of the vehicle. The Escalade can be equipped to accommodate six, seven or eight occupants. To improve third-row access, there is a power fold-and-flip option for the second-row seats. The third-row seat still doesn't fold into the floor as in the Lincoln Navigator or Infiniti QX56. This is a result of packaging constraints: The Escalade has a solid rear axle while the Navigator and QX56 have independent rear suspensions that provide more room between the rear wheels. The Escalade still leads the class in cargo capacity -- 60.3 cubic feet with the third-row seats removed and 108.9 cubes with the second row folded.

Sure, this Escalade is energetic with its new powertrain - but not exactly dramatic. Hitting the gas at lower speeds doesn't always produce vigorous response. Gruff engine growls during acceleration don't sound Cadillac-like. Automatic-transmission shifts are impressively smooth, though on upgrades it sometimes seems uncertain what to do next. Handling isn't really trucklike, but in curves, the Escalade doesn't always feel fully confident, making it tempting to ease up on the gas. Steering feel is pleasing - definitely not scary-light as in old Escalades. Expect a smooth ride on good surfaces. Minor bumps make the vehicle jumpy, if it's wearing 22-inch tires.

Manual-mode Transmission OperationPlacing the + and - (upshift/downshift) buttons on the column gearshift might not seem like a good idea at first. Most vehicles with a manual-shift provision have a floor lever. Even so, these buttons are unusually easy to find and use, and the transmission responds with satisfying promptness.Power Fold-and-Tumble Second-row Seating Third-row access is a serious issue in big SUVs, and an easy-folding second-row seat can save a lot of irritation. This option powers down at the push of a console or door-pillar button.

Details count inside, too. "Live bigger on the inside, but drive smaller on the outside" is the slogan for the 2007 Escalade, which promises premium materials and low gloss levels. Seating is available for six to eight passengers. No exposed fasteners are visible, and close-out panels conceal seat hardware. Pillars are fabric-wrapped. Cadillac moved the instrument panel down and forward four inches. Thinner seats contain sculpted backs. Seats recline further, and front-seat travel is an inch greater. Gauges are large enough, but blue pointers impair readability. Sadly, there's no driver's grab handle, and the passenger handle is a long reach.

Besides concentrating on proportions and execution, designers strove toward such detail refinements as reduced body gaps. All major components and sheet metal are new, according to Cadillac, including fully-wrapped front and rear fascias, triple-stack HID headlamps, and a unique D-pillar treatment. Noteworthy doors, inspired by Cadillac's Sixteen concept car, wrap over the rocker panels. Ventiports adorn the front fenders, and the windshield is steeper. Track width has grown by three inches up front, and a coil-over-shock suspension replaces the prior torsion bars. The boxed frame promises 49-percent greater torsional stiffness. Standard wheels are 18-inch, but hard-to-miss 22-inch tires are available.

A power rear liftgate heads the list of standard features in the amply-equipped Escalade. Compatibility brackets, built into the front frame, could reduce damage to other vehicles in a collision. Side-curtain airbags include tethers for enhanced rollover protection. Front seatbelt pretensioners activate in rear impacts - said to be an "industry-exclusive" feature. GM's StabiliTrak system incorporates rollover mitigation technology. Audiophiles can enjoy Bose 5.1 Digital Surround Sound, while everyone benefits from Cadillac's Auto Ride suspension. Integrated tow hooks are standard. A tap-up/tap-down manual mode for the transmission works easily and promptly, using buttons on the column-mounted gearshift lever.

Power fold-and-tumble second-row seats, for an extra $ 425, are called an "industry exclusive." Heated seats now are offered in all models, as part of a $ 625 Climate Package. Rear parking assist is available, along with a rearview camera. Both are incorporated into a $ 2,495 Information Package that also includes Cadillac's navigation system. Installing 22-inch wheels adds a hefty $ 2,995 to the Escalade's price. Power-deployable running boards will join the option list this summer. When properly equipped, an all-wheel-drive Escalade can tow up to 7700 pounds, which could be good news for boaters and RVers.

Cadillac has enlarged its V8 engine from 6.0 to 6.2 liters, and given it a substantial boost beyond the previous 345 horsepower. With its two overdrive ratios and wide gear-ratio spread, the new Hydra-Matic 6L80 six-speed automatic transmission is said to be nearly equivalent to a seven-speed. Manual-shift mode uses column-lever buttons.6.2-liter V8403 horsepower at 5700 rpm417 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/18 (2WD), 13/17 (AWD)

With all-wheel drive, the Escalade has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 57,280. The two-wheel-drive version, available later in the year, has an MSRP of $ 54,725. The Escalade EXT and ESV, also available later this year, will have MSRPs of $ 54,210 and $ 59,680, respectively. prices, which represent what consumers are actually paying, run more than $ 700 lower. Click on prices to compare. Escalades compete against Lincoln's less-powerful Navigator, which appeals to a similar audience and costs a bit less. Import-brand rivals include the Lexus LX 470, which costs slightly more, and the lower-priced Infiniti QX56. Mercedes-Benz's new GL450 is expected to sell in the upper $ 50,000 range. Escalades should be worth more secondhand than any competitor - and beat the Navigator by far.

2007 Cadillac Escalade Previous Generations

2007 Cadillac Escalade Future Generations

Cadillac Escalade Overview and History

GM launched a new generation Escalade for the 2007 year model, based on the GMT900 platform.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

Great Ride
Omg! I'm in love with a Cadillac. I love this vehicle. At first I was looking to buy a Denali and to my fortune god gave me this escalade. Let me start with the bad first. The door handles are cheap, they break but are not expensive to repair. Second, gas mileage in the city. Its a beast on the streets but on the interstate it does good. Well it has the best gas mileage for its size and class. I'm spoiled with all the features. Dvd, navigation, stability, camera, comfort and power. This baby purrs when you floor it. People have given this SUV a bad review don't understand that you rather have safety comfort and power over price and gas mileage. Its a balance of what you get. You won't regret it

The Best
This is my favorite vehicle by far. I have the ESV with all options. I love the size, the ride height, the roominess. I am 6'4" and this vehicle gives me the headroom, legroom, hiproom, shoulder room I like. I like riding high up and the visibility is superb. I can take 6 people in comfort and still have room for luggage etc. The Lexus, Mercedes, Infinitis, etc of the world can't compare for room. Also the Escalade has a panache, cache, a presense all its own. It is distinctive and not like the clone SUV's you see everywhere. As well, it is truck based, solid as a rock, heavy, sturdy, and reliable. Safety has a lot to do with physics, when bigger hits smaller, who wins?

My First Caddy
This is my first American-made vehicle in 15 years...and lovin' my new Escalade. It has a wonderful ride and most of the features that I wanted (no Bluetooth -- come on GM!). The exterior styling is fantastic...just the right amount of chrome. The interior is much improved, it's wonderful for an American-made SUV. GM still has plenty to learn from Lexus, BMW and Infiniti.

Beautiful SUV /to much plastic
We love the comfort, style and look of this SUV. It's a pleasure to drive and have not experienced the wind noise problem that I have read so many complaints about. My only and biggest problem is the quality with which it was made. I owned a BMW before this and never had a problem with the build. The ESV however has one piece of plastic after the other that breaks, cracks, peels or fails in someway. From my tow hitch cover, to my door handle, to the center console what American made crap. Made in America should mean made well and with quality. They could learn something from the Germans when putting together a vehicle of this price tag.

"Best ride I have ever owned."
Great ride for the money, I bought the premium level. Was looking for a used Suburban or Tahoe and came across the Escalade ESV. I have never looked back. Got it used with 65K on the odometer and put new Michelin LTXs on it. Handled great all winter, the all-wheel drive worked flawlessly through all the snow and ice, did not miss the 4 wheel drive from my previous crew cab. Super comfortable, loaded with almost every option, and lots of power from he 6.2L. Everyone in the family loves it on long trips (that's why we bought it) and plenty of storage and space for everything you can bring. The 22 inch tires are great looking but may make the ride a little more bumpy, the tires handle fantastic on the curves with the magnetic ride control though.

"Never Again"
No problems until they cross 120K Miles. Then all sorts of illnesses follows, one after the other. Hybrid battery gone at 135K miles, Throttle body replaced at 71453K miles, and then again at 130368K miles. Catalytic converter around the same time. I would not go near American cars again. A Lexus owner has similar large SUV with over 250K miles with no similar major problems to date

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
