Not quite as polished as some of the class leaders, but still worthy of a test drive if you're looking for a luxury sport sedan/wagon that won't get lost in the crowd.
Long considered an off-beat niche automaker, Saab has finally equipped its top-of-the-line 9-5 sedans and wagons with enough luxury and performance to take on Europe's finest. Instead of confusing combinations of letters and numbers to designate each model, the 9-5 lineup is now broken up into three distinct "architectural forms," each with its own personality and feature content.
The Linear is the base model, employing a 2.3-liter turbocharged 185-hp four-cylinder engine and a standard five-speed manual or optional five-speed automatic transmission. Traction control, ABS, 16-inch alloy wheels, and front and rear foglights all come standard. Interior highlights include standard leather upholstery, walnut trim, power/heated seats, front and side airbags, and the OnStar communications system.
Arc models feature a 3.0-liter turbocharged 200-hp V6 mated to the five-speed automatic transmission. An Electronic Stability Program (ESP) comes standard along with ventilated front seats, three-position driver seat memory, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and an upgraded Harman-Kardon-tuned audio system.
For maximum performance, there's the top-of-the-line Aero. Its 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder pumps out 250 hp and can be mated to either a five-speed manual or five-speed automatic. Unless you're a die-hard manual fan, pick the automatic, as its sport mode delivers amazingly quick responses that will rarely leaving you wishing for a stick shift. Aero models also get a performance-tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels and tires, leather sport seats and metallic dash trim.
All 9-5s feature minor exterior upgrades to the front and rear fascias, as well as revised steering and suspension systems. Interior upgrades include adaptive airbags, improved seatbelts and ISOFIX child seat anchors. Optional on Arc and Aero models are new bi-xenon headlights, a rear parking assist system and rain-sensing wipers. 9-5 wagons are some of the roomiest in the class with 73 cubic feet of cargo room and adjustable tie-down anchors for securing loose items.
With their extensive features list and strong, yet economical, powerplants, Saab's revamped 9-5 lineup certainly deserves a look if you're in the market for a well-appointed luxury sedan or wagon. The revised steering and suspension systems give the 9-5 a decidedly sporty feel, while the new five-speed automatic transmission does an excellent job of making the best of the turbocharged powerplants. Throw in the added safety of electronic stability control, state-of-the-art airbag protection, and its well-appointed, sharp-looking cabins, and the 9-5 should have no trouble appealing to more than just "niche" buyers.
The 2001 Saab 9-5 is a slight facelift to the original one introduced in 1997.
The Swedes at Saab were building planes long before they were building cars so you know their standards ran pretty because in the aeronautical industry there's no room for mistake if you want to get back safely on the ground.
In 1937 the Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or the Swedish Aeorplane Company starting its business but by the end of WWII the good people down there had trouble placing their products on the market. A new market was needed, but for a new market you need a new product. And since the need to get people fast and safe from one place to another was on the rise, what better market than that of automobiles. So, in 1944, Project 92, or the manufacture of the first Saab car began.
The Saab 92 had a very interesting feature but it was an understandable occurence when you consider the man who drew up the car used to design planes: it had a very low drag coefficient of 0.31, one which many modern cars still struggle to attain.
After the Saab 92 came the Saab in 1955 with an improved engine, upgraded to 3 cylinders and with the trapezoid grille that would become a trademark for the brand in later years. A wagon version of the car, the 95 came in 1959.
In the 60s, the general direction for Saab was bigger, as the 99 model proved. It also brought in more power, as the 99 was turbocharged, a feature common on later cars as well, a tradition for the Swedish automaker from then on. At the end of the decade, Saab reached the 1 million cars mark.
A new platform was needed by the end of the 70s for the aging Saabs, so the company signed a deal with Fiat which later spawned the Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Croma, Lancia Therma and the Saab 9000. All these cars rode on the Type Four chassis, the result of the joint venture.
Ten years later, in 1987, Saab found itself in financial difficulties and was forced to shut down the plant at Arlov in order to cut costs. The fact that GM bought 50% of the stocks in 1990 helped alleviate the problems a little, but the company was still losing money and so the factory at Malmo in order to further reduce costs.
Recovery was going to come in the shape of the Saab 900, developed with the help of GM in 1993, a car which would give the company its first profitable year since the 80s. GM later acquired the rest of Saab's shares as was the initial agreement and from then on Saab became subsidiary to the American giant.
Current models, the 9-3 and the 9-5, are based on Opel chassis and are manufactured in Sweden and Germany. The SUV model 9-7x is being built in america, in the state of Ohio. Now, the company has announced that it would be releasing a new crossover SUV, the 9-4X, after the demise of the 9-2X, basically a rebadged Subaru Impreza.

Good value for used luxury car
I bought my 02 Linear used, with low miles and it was pampered. An insane bargain! Really am enjoying the smooth and quiet ride, great turbo power from a 4 cylinder, and gets good gas mileage too...26-28 in mixed driving.
If you own one of these, I highly suggest joining an online Saab forum to educate yourself even further....and to save $ $ . Like any European make, they can be a bit high maintenance. That's why a lot of Saab owners are DIYers or have a well trusted mechanic programmed in their speed dial.
It is mandatory to use synthetic oil in turbo models, and I wouldn't buy any used Saab without interrogating the previous owner about their maintenance schedule until they wept aloud.

Excellent sport/luxury sedan and value
The suspension and chassis are decidedly performance biased. The steering is accurate and not overboosted. The overtaking quickness is exhilarating. The leather sport seats are well-bolstered. The stereo is excellent. The car has a solid, satisfying "king of the road" personality.
Bottom line: for less than I would have paid for a 330i or a 3.0 Quatrro A4, I got an excellent sport/luxury sedan in the A6 2.7T/5 series class with all the specs and goodies.

Punk EATER
This is my 2nd 9-5, decided to go for the power and get an Aero-GLAD I did. I've been driving a '99 9-5 for the past 6 years for business & the 2 vehicles are as opposite as it gets, I can't stand getting behind the wheel of my '99 any more. There's no comparison-PLUSH seats, quieter ride, better looks, and Ohhhhh that pavement hungry engine! I can't begin to count the number of friends who own all those overpriced German cars who take a ride in mine get out saying, "WOW!" Need I say more? The athletic handling and passing ability this car has is unreal. I keep my driving status quo but on occassion I have to show obnoxious drivers who's boss. BMW & VW punks look dazed at the stoplight!

Not impressed
Bought our 9-5 off a lease with typical lease mileage. The first thing that went was the SID (Saab Info. Display) which was costly and frustrating. Next, the turbo kept needing adjustment. The vehicle would stall for no reason. Costly and frustrating. It seems to constantly have a light out somewhere and it is absolutely terrible on gas.

2005 Saab 9-5
"Most comfortable car I learned to hate."
Transmission problems, followed by a leaking coolant valve, followed by a failing purge valve followed by whining alternator, followed by a vacuum leak followed by more transmission problems, followed by an exhaust leak brought on because of a snapped manifold bolt followed by coil pack failure (twice)..
DONE!
I must say for the short times she worked well it was fun and VERY comfortable. Probably the most comfortable compact car I have ever owned. Plenty of trunk space as well as the trunk opens a full 90 degrees. Wish I could trust it.. I just cant so it goes. If you must own this car I wish you more luck than I had.
Oh, and did I mention that Saab is no more so just try and find someone qualified to work on this who knows the ins and outs of this vehicle.

"Most comfortable Car I have ever driven!"
Have had a lot of memories with my Saab. Not once has it broke down. It does have electrical issues now and again. The trade of with that is the driving experience. It just has features that new cars no a days dont have.
