Proving that upscale sedans don't have to be stale-looking and slow, the 2007 Chrysler 300 series offers distinctive styling and V8 power in a practical and affordable package.

Full-size sedans have gotten a bad rap. They're typically seen as having the sort of style and performance only your grandmother could love. Spend a few minutes with the 2007 Chrysler 300, however, and you'll see that this stereotype doesn't always hold true. The car offers angular, edgy lines and a couple of V8s powerful enough to sate any speed demon.

With broad shoulders, a low stance and vaguely Art Deco lines, the 300 boasts an eye-catching look that's masculine, a little bit retro and undeniably luxurious. Slide behind the wheel and the good times continue. Chrysler 300 buyers have a choice of four trims, each with its own engine. Base models get a 2.7-liter V6 good for 190 horsepower. The Touring trim gets a 250-hp, 3.5-liter V6. Chrysler 300C models get a 5.7-liter Hemi V8 capable of 340 hp, and the high-performance SRT8 offers a 6.1-liter Hemi V8 good for a bracing 425 hp. But it's not all about power, as the 2007 Chrysler 300 also provides excellent ride and handling dynamics.

If you're searching for a large domestic sedan that doesn't instantly look like it came out of an AARP commercial, the 300 is the only game in town. Its overall combination of style, performance and room make it one of our top choices, and we've named it an honorable mention in our 2007 Editors Most Wanted Sedan Under $ 30,000 category. However, if you test the 300 and find it not to your liking, sedans such as the Hyundai Azera and Toyota Avalon are excellent choices as well.

The rear-drive 2007 Chrysler 300 is a large sedan available in four trim levels. The base 300 comes with air-conditioning, a power driver seat, a CD player, cruise control, remote keyless entry and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. The Touring adds a bigger V6, alloy wheels, foglights, leather upholstery and heated mirrors. The 300C adds a Hemi V8, an upgraded 276-watt Boston Acoustics sound system, foldaway mirrors, power-adjustable pedals, rain-sensing wipers, premium leather trim, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column and a driver memory system. This trim also offers SmartBeam headlights, which automatically activate or dip the high-beam headlights based on road conditions. The high-performance SRT8 model features a more powerful V8; a rear spoiler; sport-tuned suspension; a stability control system that allows more aggressive driving; 20-inch alloy wheels; and Brembo performance disc brakes with four-piston calipers.

Options, depending on trim, include xenon headlights, Bluetooth connectivity, a sunroof and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system. A navigation system is available on Touring and 300C models, as is all-wheel drive. Those looking for more room can opt for the W.P. Chrysler Executive Series Package (available on Touring and 300C rear-wheel-drive models), which adds 6 inches to the car's wheelbase and a lot more space for rear-seat passengers.

The base Chrysler 300 comes with a 2.7-liter V6 good for 190 hp and 190 pound-feet of torque. Touring models upgrade to a 3.5-liter V6 capable of 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. Step up to the 300C and you get a muscular 5.7-liter Hemi V8 that kicks out 340 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. The V8 uses a multi-displacement system, which selectively deactivates four of the engine's cylinders to save fuel in undemanding driving situations. The performance-oriented SRT8 is powered by a beefy 6.1-liter Hemi V8 that delivers a whiplash-inducing 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque.

Base models come with a four-speed automatic transmission; all others have a five-speed automatic with automanual functionality.

Features like ABS, traction control and stability control are optional on the base 300 but standard on all other trims. Full-length side curtain airbags are optional on all models. In NHTSA crash testing, the 2007 Chrysler 300 earned a perfect five stars for frontal-impact protection. In side-impact tests, it earned four stars for front-occupant safety and five stars for the rear. It earned a "Good" rating -- the highest possible -- in IIHS frontal-offset crash testing.

A rear-wheel-drive V8 family sedan is exactly what American automakers have needed for years to inspire renewed interest in their products. And with plenty of Mercedes-Benz technology in this one, the 2007 Chrysler 300 offers a great deal more refinement than its 1960s ancestors. V6 models are only adequately powered but are still fine choices for those seeking a feature-laden large sedan that handles as well as it rides. Saddled with the smaller V6, the base model feels sluggish, and we wouldn't recommend it to most buyers. Best of all is the SRT8, which offers outstanding performance thanks to sharp steering response, grippy 20-inch tires and a ferocious engine.

The interior features a simple but elegant layout. The dash may not be as fancy as some other cars in this segment, but its combination of sporty, semi-retro and luxury motifs is effective. Worth special note are the white-faced gauges and the slick tortoise-shell trim in the 300C. Cabin dimensions are generous in all directions, and the 300 offers more rear legroom than any of its primary competitors when ordered with the long wheelbase. Trunk capacity measures 15.6 cubic feet.

Even though the 300C SRT8 borrows a lot of componentry from Mercedes-Benz, its heart and soul, the 6.1-liter HEMI V8, is still purely American. With 425 horsepower and 420 pound-feet of torque, the 300C SRT8 can rocket from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than five seconds. So much power in a rear-wheel-drive American car used to be cause for concern, especially when cornering was involved. But this is not your father's 1978 Chrysler New Yorker. It's a vehicle that remains nearly flat in the curves, holds to the road with security and envelopes the driver with a sense of confidence and control. Only a handful of sedans can measure up to the 300C SRT8's performance, and not one of them can be purchased for under $ 45,000.

Sport SeatsThough still snug, Chrysler's sport seats allow more room for American-sized bodies than do comparable seats from Audi or BMW. Both driver and passenger enjoy power lumbar support as well as electric seat heaters. Boston Acoustic Kicker AudioWith a six-disc MP3-capable CD changer that allows you to play hundreds of songs, the standard sound system is impressive enough. Add the 322-watt amplifier with a 100-watt powered subwoofer and 13 speakers, and you have a sound system as powerful as the SRT8 itself.

In creating the 300C SRT8, Chrysler has made a number of noticeable changes to the stock 300C interior. The most obvious are the heated sport bucket seats, which feature large side bolsters and suede inserts designed to keep occupants from sliding about when the driving experience becomes spirited. The modified instrument cluster reveals a 180-miles per hour speedometer. Despite the ample use of leather on the seats, door pulls and steering wheel - not to mention the numerous interior parts borrowed from Mercedes-Benz - the plastics composing the rest of the interior have a somewhat entry-level quality that detracts from an otherwise beautiful cabin.

The 300C SRT8 is one of the most original automotive designs of the twenty-first century. From its formidable grille to its narrow side glass and edgy, slab-sided contours, the car boldly stands out in any automotive crowd. The revised front fascia, for example, not only looks more aggressive, its design directs air to help cool the big Brembo brakes. Likewise, the rear spoiler serves to increase downforce without increasing drag. Other changes include 20-inch wheels and tires, body-colored mirrors and door handles and SRT badging. It should be noted that the 300C SRT8's high beltline and wide rear C-pillars create numerous blind spots that are especially distracting when changing lanes or parallel parking.

Befitting its top-of-the-line status, the 300C SRT8 is very well equipped. Standard features include the 425-horsepower, 6.1-liter V8, five-speed AutoStick automatic transmission, sport springs and suspension, rear spoiler, 20-inch forged aluminum wheels, electronic stability program, traction control, four-wheel anti-lock Brembo disc brakes (ABS), HID headlamps, power-adjustable sport seats with heating and driver's-side memory feature, power-adjustable pedals, AM/FM stereo with MP3-compatible six-disc CD changer and Boston Acoustic speakers, steering wheel-mounted audio controls, power-adjustable tilt/telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone automatic temperature control.

The SRT8 Option Group 1 includes front and rear head-curtain airbags, front seat side-impact airbags and an air filtration system. The SRT8 Option Group 2 adds the UConnect hands-free communication system, a power glass sunroof, DVD-based navigation and SIRIUS Satellite Radio. The few stand-alone options include a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a power glass sunroof, 13-speaker Kicker high-performance speaker upgrade kit and SIRIUS Satellite Radio.

The 300C SRT8's HEMI (so named for its hemispherical combustion chambers) is related to the 5.7-liter engine found in the 300C sedan. The SRT division begins with a stronger engine block, then enlarges the cylinder bore, thus increasing displacement to 6.1 liters. Engineers then add numerous performance parts, including revised intake and exhaust manifolds, high-flow cylinder heads, a high-performance camshaft, forged-steel crankshaft and reinforced connecting rods. The result is the most powerful HEMI engine for its size ever produced by Chrysler. 6.1-liter V8 HEMI425 horsepower @ 6000 rpm420 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/20

The 300C SRT8 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 41,095. Toss in the DVD entertainment system, Option Groups 1 and 2 and the 13-speaker Kicker audio upgrade, and the price will exceed $ 50,000. That's pretty impressive when you consider the prices of comparably-equipped sedans from BMW, Audi and Lexus. The Fair Purchase Price shows consumer demand is keeping the SRT8's selling price at or slightly higher than MSRP. Despite its high premium, the 300C SRT8 does not retain as high a resale value as the BMW 550i, Audi S4 or Lexus GS430. It does, however, stack up well against the Mercedes-Benz E550 and Cadillac STS-V, and retains a better five-year residual value than the Jaguar S-Type R.

Chrysler 300 Overview and History

In terms of genesis, Chrysler is almost synonymous with an unwanted premature detonation. Amidst the depression of 1921 and the great collapse of 1929, when most car producers were facing extinction due to drastic decrease in sales, lack of resources and investors, a small company would try to make its way to the auto shows and into the American citizens' garages. Despite the economic meltdown that drove investors away and locked-down companies faster than a second Ice Age, the US auto market was mainly divided among two powers: the ever expanding GM and Ford.

The sum of such horrific conditions would have normally drove away contenders, but Walter P. Chrysler thought otherwise. Determined to get an equally slice of the market share pizza for himself, he exhibited a handsome car at the 1924 New York Auto Show. The automobile was none other than the Chrysler 70, the model that would drag the Chrysler name to he Pantheon of American car builders.

However, Chrysler wasn't born as Chrysler (from the company's standpoint). Facing a rapid and possibly permanent dissolution, the two initial companies held by Walter P., Maxwell and Chambers, merged to form a new entity that would later rub shoulders with its competitors at the time. The 70 model had an instant success that allowed the newly formed corporation to expand freely, unabated by the competition's efforts and much wider rage of automobiles.

The Chambers name was dropped, whist Maxwell was re-branded as a Plymouth. By 1931, the Plymouth brand had already become a fierce competitor in the small car segment and was insistently knocking on Ford stronghold's door, yelling to make room or evict the place. Although Ford was basically partying due to the high sales registered by their model A, the more advanced Plymouth did far better. Sporting hydraulic brakes, more flowing body lines and  a “floating power”engine, the Plymouth cast an awfully large cloud of doubt over Ford's headquarters.

The improvements brought by the Plymouth became so popular that other producers started using them as well. Citroen would later use Chrysler's patented “floating engine” technology that had the great advantage of reducing engine vibrations through the use of three rubber mounts that separated the engine from having direct contact with the chassis.

Chrysler did so good the following years that by the end of the 30's it had already surpassed Ford and moved to a comfortable second position. Almost unknowingly, Chrysler became a titan. The time to wrestle the no. 1 car manufacturer was near and Chrysler carefully readied its match.

However, what was designed as a model of crushing beauty was not well received by the American public. The 1934 Airflow model, a gorgeous curvy sparkling beauty failed to make an impact and consequently sales dropped faster than CBS dropped “The Will”.

Funnily enough, the public was not touched by a car that was way ahead of its time, at least as far as the bodywork was concerned. However, poor sales were efficiently countered once Chrysler released the Imperial model. Large, powerful and luxurious, it was an instant hit and catered for the need of a stand-out motorized social status statement, as well as a reliable day to day ride.

As soon as World War II was over Chrysler had entered a sales numbness, focusing more on research and engineering improvements rather than holding the company's position as a top car industry leader. The post WW II days brought along some significant changes in auto design and shape, with a legendary tail fin craze initiated by Ford and GM.

In response to the existing trends, Chrysler's automobiles became longer and wider and sacrificed performance and reliability for looks. This happened because of a shift in the consumers' perspective who came to prefer style and exterior features over practicality and quality. The by know well established Chrysler products were removed to make way for a new range of flashy cars that failed to climb to the height of the precedent line-up. In doing so, Chrysler was pushed back to the third place once more.

By the beginning of the 60's, Chrysler made a comeback with the introduction of the spectacularly enduring, fast and well balanced 300-F. Though some drivers complained about the vehicle's great size, its performance was hard if not impossible to contest. The machine could develop 400 hp and its acceleration was phenomenal.

Once the modern times arrived, Chrysler proved its versatility and changed once with the automotive industry, delivering quality vehicles for an ever increasing mass of enthusiasts. Models such as the Sebring, 300M, 300C and PT Cruiser, a vehicle conceived as a blend of modern technology and retro style elements, managed to keep Chrysler among the top choices within US borders. Unlike other American car brands, such as Cadillac, Buick or Lincoln, Chrysler has received a great deal of attention overseas as well. During the 90's, the company merged with Daimler-Benz AG and formed Daimler Chrysler, which is currently a world leader in transportation.

07 300C A Dream Car
I purchased an Inferno Red 07 300C on August 31st and it a dream. It drives beautifully, and rides just as nice. I got it almsot fully optioned accept for U-Connect and the Rear DVD system. I traded in an 04 PT Turbo and while I was satisfied with that, I am truly satisfied with the 300C. Thank you Chrysler for making such a good product.

Best car I ever had
I leased a 2007 300C AWD after coming off a two year lease on a 2005 Cadillac STS. Best move I ever made. The design, in Inferno Red, is a real head turner. The power and interior comfort can't be matched. With the options I took, I have very feature I could want, at an unbelievable low price.

300 Great Auto
My 300 Touring is a dream car for comfort and styling. The navigation system is a farce. I have a 250 Garmin handheld that is far superior to the $ 1800 for the navigation system. Alpine is not interested in working to improve or upgrade a very antiquated program disc. I have about 1900 miles on my vehicle and have been getting about 25 on the interstate. Ride is wonderful. Cruise control lever could be changed. Easy to hit it versus the turn signal. Sound system is outstanding. Styling is fantastic. Overall I am very please except for the navigation system.

New Owner Driving Experience
The vehicle is a beautiful car and I have received numerous compliments from young and older people both. The car drives well and my 250 HP engine performs good. Vehicle is very roomy. Visibility is not terrific but with time and extra effort you learn the blind spots and how to compensate & can drive safely and with ease. The vehicle is quiet and comfortable. The power heated mirrors are really nice. I like having the Electronic Stability and Anti-lock 4-wheel disc brakes.

Bought with 40,000 miles used over ten years ago, now has over 220,000 and stil runs, drives and looks like new( other than worn leather seat). Only got stuck once due to fuel pump failure. The 5.7 hemi doesn’t seem to be slowing down.

I love the styling and performance coupled with luxury. Smooth HEMI engine to get up and go when I need to. Very comfortable for long trips. The seat heaters are wonderfully effective. The Boston acoustics provide a wonderful sound system. This car has been very dependable.
