Solid performance, an elegant cabin and reasonable pricing make the 2007 Audi A6 a worthy competitor in the luxury sedan and wagon class. If you're shopping for a premium midsize car, this one should be on your short list.

After years of playing second fiddle in the midsize luxury sedan segment, Audi's A6 has recently bettered itself so it now sits shoulder to shoulder with the class heavyweights -- the BMW 5 Series and the Mercedes-Benz E-Class. A redesign a couple of years ago resulted in a finely sculpted sedan that also had beauty under the skin in the form of an athletic suspension, energetic power plants and, in Audi tradition, a handsome cabin trimmed in the finest materials. A wagon version of the A6, called the Avant, is also available, and shares all the attributes of the sedan.

As with its most direct peers, one can have a 2007 Audi A6 with either six- or eight-cylinder power. Gone are the days of tepid V6s for this brand, as the direct-injected 3.2-liter unit puts out 255 hp. The big news this year, however, is the revamped 4.2-liter V8 that also uses direct fuel injection. Output is a potent 350 hp. Unfortunately, the A6 is no lightweight. At over 4000 pounds, there's quite a bit of mass here, so even with the muscular V8, the A6 isn't going to rip off sub-6-second 0-60 times. But this classy sedan and wagon were not built to outgun Shelby Mustangs at stop lights; their forte is covering hundreds of miles at a speedy pace, all the while coddling their occupants in quiet and spacious cabins.

For years, Audi had the all-wheel-drive niche of the luxury sedan segment virtually to itself. But now its competition has seen the light and offers AWD as well, giving those who live in inclement areas of the country more choices in a luxury sedan or wagon. As before, serious driving enthusiasts will find the BMW 5 Series the most rewarding to drive in this segment, thanks chiefly to its highly communicative steering and somewhat firmer suspension. But unlike the A6, the 5 Series doesn't offer all-wheel drive in the V8 version. Of course, the Mercedes E-Class is a strong choice in this segment as well, but it costs around $ 7,000 more than the A6. Another close competitor is the Acura RL sedan, which also comes with standard AWD and an attractive price. All things considered, however, the majority of drivers should be more than happy with the 2007 Audi A6. Whether you go the sedan or wagon route, the Audi's abundant luxury, sporty handling and comfortable ride quality will make it a pleasurable vehicle for nearly all situations.

The 2007 Audi A6 is sold as a sedan and Avant (wagon). The sedan comes in 3.2 and 4.2 trim levels, and these numbers correspond to the size of engine fitted. The Avant comes in the 3.2 trim only. Standard features on the 3.2 sedan include 16-inch alloy wheels, wood interior trim, a trip computer, leather seating, power front seats, a tire-pressure monitor, dual-zone automatic climate control and a 10-speaker stereo with a glovebox-mounted CD changer. The 3.2 Avant is similar but with 17-inch wheels and a sunroof. The top-line 4.2 sedan provides adaptive xenon HID headlights, a sunroof, heated front seats, auto-dimming mirrors, upgraded leather upholstery and driver memory settings. An available premium package for the 3.2 models essentially adds the features of the 4.2. The S-line package adds a sport suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels with performance tires, gray birch wood inlays, headlight washers and unique bumper and grille treatment. Other options include iPod integration, adaptive air suspension, rear park assist with rearview camera, adaptive cruise control, a navigation system and voice-recognition technology.

The A6 3.2 features a 3.1-liter V6 rated at 255 hp and 243 pound-feet of torque. The A6 4.2 has a 4.2-liter V8 that puts out 350 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque. The sedan is available with either engine, while the wagon comes with the V6 only. Both engines feature direct fuel-injection technology, which optimizes performance and efficiency via ultra-precise fuel delivery. The 3.2 front-wheel-drive sedan has a continuously variable transmission (with driver-selectable shift points), while all other A6s come with a six-speed automatic transmission and the Quattro all-wheel-drive system. Though the V6 is still a little short on low-end torque, it pulls with authority through the midrange. We timed a 3.2 Quattro sedan at 7.9 seconds from zero to 60 mph. As expected, the V8 is as smooth and potent as any eight-cylinder in the class and betters the 3.2 model's time by about a second; we recently timed a 4.2 sedan at 7.1 seconds to 60 mph.

All A6 models come with antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags. Rear-seat side airbags are optional. The A6 performed admirably in IIHS testing, earning the top rating of "Good" in both frontal-offset and side-impact tests.

While the Audi's handling is softer than BMW's 5 Series or Infiniti's M35/M45, it provides an excellent ride around town, along with predictable reflexes and precise steering through turns. During high-speed cruising the A6 provides a serene cabin and a confident feel at the wheel. Additionally, its Quattro system affords it prodigious grip around turns that makes spirited driving that much more fun, while providing all-weather capability.

The 2007 Audi A6 offers one of the finest interiors of any midsize luxury sedan. Besides offering standard leather and wood inlays, each cabin is filled with supple, high-quality materials. If you bought an A6 for the sake of luxury appointments alone, you wouldn't be disappointed. All models come with the Multi Media Interface (MMI) vehicle management system, whose 7-inch display is integrated with the 10-speaker Bose stereo and the optional navigation system. In practice, it's much easier to use than BMW's iDrive or Mercedes' COMAND and helps minimize cabin clutter. An available Advanced Key feature allows drivers to keep the key on their person and simply hit the start button when entering the car, instead of fumbling for the ignition. The Avant wagon has a 34-cubic-foot cargo hold behind its rear seats, and folding the seats expands it to 59 cubes.

Supreme confidence on both expressways and winding roads is markedly enhanced by the sure-footed feel of quattro all-wheel drive. Acceleration is quite satisfying with the V6 and the automatic transmission responds effectively. No, it's not a powerhouse, but few drivers really need the V8's extra horses. Only if you get a thrill from lunging, full-throttle takeoffs would the V8 be a better bet. Overall, the A6 experience falls just a little short of serene - mainly because the ride can get bouncy on washboard-stiff surfaces and through harsher bumps, though the suspension reacts rapidly.

Quattro All-Wheel DriveFor negotiating curvy canyons or snowy streets, Audi's famed quattro all-wheel-drive system gives the A6 a real advantage.Multi Media InterfaceAlthough it subjects its operator to a learning curve and not every function is entirely intuitive, Audi's MMI system is a sleek solution for the control of in-cabin technology.

From the driver's seat, the A6 comes across as one serious sedan. Leather surfaces are inviting, though seats are on the firm side. They're satisfying for long-term touring, however, with helpful but not intrusive support and bolstering. Backseat riders get plenty of headroom and knee space, but the center passenger must suffer the indignity of a stiff perch and a high floor hump. Fully calibrated gauges are especially easy to read, though the MMI (Multi Media Interface) control can be a handful. Don't expect an unobstructed view over the left shoulder, but visibility is good otherwise. An electronic dashboard button opens a glove box that is short on space.

The new look of Audi is evident across the A6 body. Up front, a bold trapezoidal grille - tall and split into two elements - is flanked by sleek Xenon headlamps. Designer Achim Badstubner says it's the kind of dramatic front end that promises "overtaking prestige on the Autobahn," informing drivers who see it coming in the rearview mirror that a serious machine is on its way.

Even in its most basic form, the A6 feels loaded to the brim. Standard features include anti-lock brakes (ABS), front and rear fog lights, front and rear head-curtain airbags, 12-way power driver and passenger seat with four-way power lumbar, leather seating, tilt/telescopic steering wheel with touch controls, one touch up/down windows with pinch protection, cruise control, power trunk release, 10-speaker sound system with six-disc CD/MP3 changer and 17-inch alloy wheels.

The V6 sedan can be equipped with such fine features as Bi-Xenon headlamps, Bose audio, adaptive speed control, solar moonroof panel and polished wheels. The Cold Weather package includes heated front seats and a ski sack. Enthusiasts can opt for the S line package, which includes a sport suspension, upgraded alloy wheels, headlamp washers and S line trim. DVD navigation, rear parking sensors, rearview camera, leather dash and SIRIUS Satellite Radio are also available.

Both the V6 and V8 engines are more than sufficient to move the A6. It's simply a matter of how quickly you wish to be moved. The 3.2-liter V6 is smooth, quiet and refined, delivering excellent low-end torque for quick starts as well as respectable highway fuel economy. The V8 turns the A6 from quick to remarkably quick, but you'll pay a premium at both the dealership and the gas pump.3.2-liter V6255 horsepower @ 6800 rpm243 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/274.2-liter V8350 horsepower @ 6600 rpm325 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25

The A6 3.2 quattro has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 45,820. The V8-powered 4.2 starts at $ 56,020. A loaded V8 model can easily top $ 65,000, leaving the A6 in a slightly better position than a loaded Mercedes-Benz E550, but more pricey than a similarly-equipped Lexus GS 430. A look at the Fair Purchase Price page will show you the typical transaction price paid at the dealer, so be sure to check it out before you begin negotiations. As for resale, the A6 does well, with the V8 sedan retaining more of its value than the V6. The V8 model maintains a residual similar to the BMW 550 and Lexus GS 430, and greater than the Cadillac STS and Mercedes-Benz E550.

Audi A6 Overview and History

The third generation Audi A6 model was introduced by the German manufacturer in 2005.
Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.

Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.

Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.

Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.

A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.

However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and  and the brands in 1964.

Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes  it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.

After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.

Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.

2007 Audi A6 Consumer Reviews

Big jump from my old Jeep Grand Cherokee
Fast, quiet, responsive, well appointed, bells and whistles aside, I love going to work now. The mountain freeway I drive to and from work is fun now, for the first time in 25 years. It's taking me a little time getting used to the differences of driving from my old car, and 1995 Jeep, where my legs go down in from of me and the steering wheel isn't between my knees. The 2007 A6 is a race car. It hunkers down into turns asking me to push the gas peddle a little further down, as if it wants to go faster. The car has a quality that puts it in a class with any other more expensive car on the road. Consumer reports for the 2007 Audi A6 will be all good, I believe. I couldn’t be more impressed.

Nice!
Traded in my 2007 A4 for a 2007 certified A6 (needed extra room in the back seat). Very happy with the purchase. I do miss the "nimbleness" of the A4, but the A6 added a few extras that I didn't have before. There's enough room in the back for a baby seat - behind both driver and passenger and the trunk is enormous! Plenty of power when needed - just watch the fuel gauge. Driving conservatively around town, I get in the low 20's. On the highway - averaging around 70 - I get close to 30 mpg. Pretty good for a big heavy car. Plus, it can run well on regular - unlike the 2.0T A4. Although I do alternate with a tank full of Shell Premium V-Power just to keep the injectors clean.

Best Bang for your Quarta!
The first thing that is great about the car is its elegant interior, I've owned BMWs and Lexus and MBZs and they all come in a distant second to the interior. The sure footedness of its all wheel drive makes it a fun car to drive, yet not stiff and rugged like it's german relatives. This vehicle is not the quickest off the line but the real world does not live in the 0-60 realm, it is in real driving situations where this car exceeds expectations. The MMI took a while to learn, but who needs it when you have the voice activated commands?

2007 4.2 S line A6
I agonized over this car for months Audi vs BMW vs Lexus vs Acura... I am defiinitely very happy. The V8 is quick off the line but is more appreciated when passing on the freeway. S line handling and paddle shifter are fun but not mandatory. New addition is the review camera - which becomes important in the city (bumpers not made for love taps). Interior comfort very similar to the A8. The car is awesome. The Nav is easier to use than BMW. Decent mpg for a V8. The brakes could be a more responsive. Apparently they didn't make too many of the V8 A6s - usually are ordered only - and so you wind up paying more for it (just 1k under MSRP) but is definitely worth it.

2008 Audi A6
"A6 has been a great car"
We have had the A6 Quattro now for 10+ years. It has been a great family car. The front seats are comfortable and very supportive. The rear seats give you plenty of room. My 5'10" daughter has never complained about leg room in the rear like she did in my A4. The A6 provides a solid ride yet handles well for a larger vehicle. The A6 is a great highway car. The 3.2 V6 provides plenty of power and gets close to 29 MPG on the highway. It has probably made at least 15 trips down and back from Atlanta to New Orleans. The 500 mile drive each way has always been fun, comfortable, and stress free. The A6 has been reliable. I have changed the oil at 5K intervals. Between oil changes, I have very rarely had to add additional oil. Recently, I did have to do a carbon cleaning when the engine began to run a little rough. The 3.2 V6 has been known to be plagued with this issue. Otherwise, there have not been any major repairs needed. There has been an issue with the air bag warning light for the passenger side air bag that has never been resolved. The warning light comes on every month or so indicating an intermittent loss of connection with the sensor. The dealer performed a number of repairs under warranty, but the condition always came back. Several independent mechanics have also looked at it, but the problem has never been fully resolved. I now just reset the indicator when the light comes on. I never expected to keep the A6 as long as we have. I am now at the point where I need to evaluate how much additional investment to put into the vehicle. It is still riding on the original suspension components. If I decide to keep the vehicle for a few more years, I would probably replace the suspension to keep the A6 riding comfortable and firm. Overall, I think the A6 is an underappreciated value. It delivers on all that you can ask for in it's class (luxury, comfort, performance, and handling) at a price that many pay now for an SUV.

"Stay away!!!!"
Bought the car car with 100k miles from a dealer. All maintenance records and the previous owner did it all at the recommended mileage. I have 175k miles on it and have literally stuck 20k dollars in to it. I couldnt sell it because at about 130k miles the kbb was about 4 grand. wow this car does not hold its value. 2 sets of complete control arms all around. LED tail lights have failed 3 times. 250 per light assembly. ABS sensor went out. That was about 2k installed. emission pump has failed 3 times HID bulbs and ballasts failed. Complete junk. totally over engineered. Looks great, interior is beautiful but thats it. Handles decent but the ride is horrible compared to same year Benz or BMW. Its a Volkswagon with an Audi badge. Junk!!! I will never buy another one. Ill stick with an older BenzRead less
