Fast and beautiful to look at, the 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is an achingly desirable sports car.

Many automakers have tried to design sports cars to take on the seminal Porsche 911. Success has been elusive. The latest automaker to give it a shot is Aston Martin. In the midst of a revival, the brand hopes its all-new 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage will be the 911-slaying silver bullet.

Designed to be the most accessible vehicle in this performance-oriented automaker's lineup, the V8 Vantage costs about $ 110,000, although the price could rise to as high as $ 120,000 by the time desirable options such as a navigation system and full leather trim are added. That's about $ 20,000 more than a fully loaded 911, but Aston buyers are assured of greater exclusivity, as only 2,000 or so units are expected to roll out of AM's plant each year in Gaydon, England.

The new Vantage is possibly the only car in the world that can make the gorgeous DB9 look less than perfect. As a sculpture, the V8 Vantage is one of the most stunning sports cars of all time; the body is tautly stretched over the 102.4-inch wheelbase with minimal overhangs and the fenders cover the 19-inch wheels with devastating sensuousness. The windshield is fitted into its one-piece aluminum frame at such an extreme angle that the car's profile is practically ballistic.

Underneath, the "VH" (Vertical Horizontal) structure that underpins the Vantage is an intricate assembly of aluminum extrusions, steel and magnesium castings and composite body panels, all bonded together with advanced adhesives, self-piercing rivets and welds so beautiful you can run your fingers over them and never feel a bump or a joint.

The Aston's firepower comes courtesy of a 4.3-liter V8 engine. Although a handful of components are shared with V8s used by Jaguar (the two share parent company Ford), Aston says its engine is very much its own. It develops 380 horsepower at 7,300 rpm and 302 pound-feet of torque at 5,000 rpm. By introducing a dry-sump oil system, Aston's engineers have been able to mount the engine low in the chassis. It also sits behind the front axle so this is very much a front-midengine car. The weight distribution is a respectable 49-to-51 percent front to rear.

Away from the numbers and on the road, the 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is indeed a very appealing choice for a no-excuses sports car. It's beautifully built and a brilliant performer. There's no doubt that it could be as pleasing to own as a Porsche 911, and the experience would be enhanced by the rarity induced by the car's newness and limited production. But make no mistake: The 911, with its prestigious racing history, rich model lineup and reputation for durability and resale, is in no danger (yet) of losing its status as the ultimate all-around sports car.

The 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is an exotic sports car with a hatchback design. It comes standard with 18-inch wheels wearing 235/45ZR18 tires in front and 275/40ZR18s in back. Inside, the Vantage comes with leather upholstery, automatic climate control, power seats and a six-disc CD changer. Many optional features are also available. These include 19-inch wheels, HID headlights, a navigation system, upgraded leather upholstery, a premium audio system, heated seats and a variety of different wood or metallic trim interior highlights.

Under the hood is a normally aspirated 4.3-liter V8 engine that makes 380 hp and 302 lb-ft of torque. Power is sent to the rear wheels via a six-speed transaxle. Getting to 60 mph takes 5.1 seconds and the quarter-mile passes by in 13.3 seconds at 106 mph.

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes with brake assist, stability control, traction control and side airbags.

Though other sports cars costing considerably less money can match or better the Vantage's straight-line performance, none, with the exception of the Porsche 911, can provide such an enjoyable and exotic driving experience overall. On a curvy road, the Vantage moves confidently. It slides progressively and returns to its intended path with little drama. The 2006 Aston Martin V8 Vantage is what it looks like: a seriously fast sports car that delivers on the promise made by its wide tires, gorgeous sound and svelte proportions.

The new Vantage shares its fascia architecture with the more expensive DB9. Quality leather upholstery and a glass starter button that illuminates in red when pressed greet the driver. Whereas the DB9 has a couple of token rear seats suitable only for go-faster babies, the Vantage is strictly a two-seater. Accommodations for most drivers are adequate, but larger pilots might find the seat and footwell to be too narrow. Outward visibility is hampered by the car's thick pillars. For gear stowage, the V8 Vantage has a 10.6-cubic-foot cargo area that's accessed via the rear hatch.

Aston Martin V8 Vantage Overview and History

Aston Martin revealed its newest V8 Vantage at the 2005 Geneva Motor Show, but the model was available for the large public as a 2006 model.
What do you do when you have fair amounts of car racing talent, ample passion for automobiles and your enthusiasm, if converted into electricity, could power a small town? You start your own car production and sales business, of course. That is exactly how the Aston Martin brand was started, proudly born into a garage, much like grunge music. Lionel Matin and Robert Bamford garnered levels of success similar to Kurt Cobain's Nirvana. However, Martin and Bamford's version of Nirvana was engineered form scrap through a partnership that would ultimately lead to a kick in the luxury auto-market's groin.

Aston Martin was founded in 1913, soon after Martin emerged victorious out of the famed Aston Hill race. The duo produced their first car 2 years later by fitting a four-cylinder Coventry-Simplex engine to a 1908 Isotta-Fraschinni chassis. However, their plans of starting production were abruptly shattered by the First World War outbreak when both of the car-makers joined the army.

Still, Aston Martin would prevail as soon as the War was over, with the company being refunded to resume its activity. However, not much time went by before Bamford left Aston Martin in 1920. Luckily enough, a wealthy investor saw the true potential of the brand and poured heavy funds into its rejuvenation. Count Louis Zborowski investment turned almost overnight into a delicious technological improvement reward topped with racing track winnings whipped cream.

In 1922, Aston Martin produced vehicles to compete in the French Grand Prix. Besides gaining fame by appearing at some of the most popular races of that time, the cars also collected acclaim by setting new speed and endurance records at Brooklands. The three types of chassis that were used at the time became known as the winning trio with chassis number 1915 at the top and supporting numbers 1914 and 1916 at the sides.

However, the tidal wave of fame that has propelled Aston Martin to new heights broke against the solid wall of a 1924 bankruptcy. Still, it survived, having been purchased by Lady Charnwood who gave her son John Benson an important administrative role. It would ultimately prove that her son could not face the challenges of such a position and the company failed again only one year later. By 1926, the doors had slammed shut, with Lionel Martin stepping into the shoes of his former business partner, Robert Bamford.

Soon after Martin's leaving, the company would be revived for a second time by a ring of rich investors including Bill Renwick and Augustus Bertelli who were responsible for the design and performance of some of the models that would later enter production. By 1937, Bertelli had already developed a variety of vehicles, some of the most famous being the 'Le Mans', the Mk II' and the 'Ulster'.

Although Aston Martin was doing well, it was soon afflicted by a third set of financial problems that were deftly fixed by L. Prideaux Brune, who continued to finance the company for a short time. After changing ownership for a fourth time, the luxury car-maker became still, once the Second World War broke out.

in 1947, the lethargy that had snugly wrapped around the company's activity received a coupe de grace from 'charioteer' David Brown, who had also acquired Lagonda the same year. Aston Martin Motors, who had gained the name during its 1926 resurrection, had entered a new stage of production. The first model of the DB series would soon appear, with a successor being announced in 1950, the DB3 seven years later and so on until the early 70's with the DBS V8.

Although Aston Martin enjoyed success and appreciation, it switched to financial-trouble mode once more, changing two ownerships over the next two decades until Ford took over in the early 90's. During this time, Aston had grown in size and notoriety with a much wider palette of offerings ranging from the Volante to the Vantage and the DB7. Although Ford would not slacken the reigns on Aston Martin's leadership, the board committee was forced to take the same decision as Aston's previous owners: sell the company. Last year (2007) Aston Martin entered a new era when it was purchased by a Prodrive chairman David Richards-led consortium for the amount of $ 848 million. Ever since, Aston has registered an overall sales increase and has expanded by opening more dealers in Europe and even moving to China, a performance that hasn't been achieved in almost a century worth of car-brand history.

Excellent - Best Sports Car I Have Owned
I have had a Porsche and numerous BMWs. For me, this is the treasured prize. The quality of the interior and refinement of the exterior combined with the reliability I have experienced to date make this the finest auto I have ever owned. One article described it best - it is 95% of the performance and 200% of the "WOW" factor of the Porsche Carrera. The cornering and straight acceleration are a notch inferior to the Porsche, but the pride of ownership and fit and finish ar far superior than anything else. Try it... you'll like it.

Exclusive!!!
I am another Porsche guy that switched to Aston. The last 10 years I had 5 different Porsches including the latest 997 C2S. Exclusivity is the key. Porsches are extremely common and Astons are so special. I know there is a lot of talk about reliability issues but the moment you hear the engine sound above 4000 rpm you forget about all the bad things and you get big satisfaction without even the need to go fast. A very cool car, no doubt!

A Perfect Sports Car!
I waited 686 days from the date I placed my deposit until delivery of my Vantage. Was it worth the wait? You bet! I've been driving Corvettes for over 20 years and I love them...but the Vantage is so much more. Yes, the Vantage is expensive, but the style and performance are perfect. The handling on winding mountain roads is incredible. The engine sings and begs you to open the windows and turn off the great sound system. I've been driving manual transmissions my entire life and nothing comes close to this 6-speed gearbox. If you really love to drive cars and can afford the $ $ $ , I recommend you take the plunge and go for it. I love it! I love it! I LOVE IT!!!

Wonderful car
I have owned several different model Porsches, but none compare in looks, attention, and driving pleasure and ability than my 2007 AM Vantage. This car is quality and stunning in every way. It exudes the fact that it is hand built from bumper to bumper. The low growl when pressing the start button, and even much more so when reaching 4000 rpm, is exciting. Some say the 380 horse power engine is not enough. They must be on drugs because for a non-racer like me, it has plenty of responsiveness. The amount of positive attention and accolades you receive in driving this car is often downright embarrassing. I could write a book on overwhelming positive public reaction this car draws.
