The 2016 Kia Optima combines sporty styling with a strong value proposition that's hard to beat in the midsize sedan segment.

The midsize sedan segment is filled with sedans so renowned that they need no introduction. Camry. Accord. Fusion. Even though the Kia Optima has been on sale in the United States since 2001, it only recently elevated itself from the bargain basement to become a serious competitor. Kicking off a new generation, the 2016 Kia Optima raises the bar set by its esteemed predecessor, a car that helped shift the perception of the brand over the last half-decade.

The redesigned 2016 Kia Optima maintains the previous generation's stylish looks, with just a few updates to the front and rear.

One thing that hasn't changed much for 2016 is the Optima's exterior styling. Slightly longer, wider and taller than the car it replaces, this Kia is still a head-turner, but you'll need to take a hard look to notice the subtle differences. Underneath the skin is another story. High-strength steel is used extensively in the chassis, which Kia says makes for better structural rigidity, handling and high-speed stability. In addition to the carryover 2.4-liter base engine, a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine is now available that promises better performance and fuel economy. The optional 2.0-liter turbo actually gets less power and torque this time around, but it's still the sporty choice in the lineup.

Even as it inches toward the standard-bearers in this segment in terms of price, the Optima is still a great choice for value. The base Optima LX already comes with a nice selection of convenience items, while fancier configurations offer features that are uncommon at this level, including adaptive cruise control, automatic emergency braking, quilted leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof and a 360-degree parking camera. Such premium content would be more expected in the Optima's big brother, the Cadenza, but it's a clear differentiator in the context of other family sedans.

The midsize sedan segment is not wanting for worthy competitors to the 2016 Kia Optima. The 2016 Honda Accord is thoroughly refreshed for this year, boasting bold new styling and Honda's usual powertrain excellence. The 2016 Mazda 6 is stylish and fun to drive, but those who find its 2.5-liter engine lacking in oomph don't get the choice for a more powerful motor. The 2016 Toyota Camry is a little more vanilla, but its reputation for reliability is unmatched. You could also check out the Optima's closely related cousin, the well-rounded 2016 Hyundai Sonata. However, the 2016 Optima — with its blend of performance, style and value — is right in the mix with today's elite midsize family sedans.

The 2016 Kia Optima is a five-passenger midsize sedan that comes in LX (differentiated slightly for the base 2.4-liter engine and the 1.6T), EX, SX and SXL trim levels.

The LX comes standard with 16-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, cruise control, air-conditioning, a six-way power driver seat (with power lumbar), a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, a 60/40-split rear seatback, a rearview camera, a 5-inch central display, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, a USB port and an auxiliary audio jack.

The LX's optional Convenience package adds an eight-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar adjustment), laminated (i.e., quieter) front door windows, power-folding heated mirrors, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and driver memory settings. Also included are a few safety features, including a blind-spot monitor, rear parking sensors and rear cross-traffic alert.

Going for the LX 1.6T gets you a turbocharged 1.6-liter engine, the laminated front door windows and heated and power-folding mirrors from the Convenience package, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and keyless entry and ignition.

The LX 1.6T Technology package folds in the remaining features from the LX's Convenience package, plus LED taillights, two charge-only USB ports, dual-zone climate control, rear air-conditioning vents and an 8-inch touchscreen bundled with HD radio, a navigation system and Kia's Uvo infotainment system.

With the EX, you get feature content similar to the LX 1.6T but with the base engine, 17-inch alloy wheels, LED running lights, a heated steering wheel, leather upholstery and all features from the Technology package minus the auto-dimming rearview mirror, 8-inch touchscreen bundle and optional blind-spot monitoring/cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors.

Opting for the EX's Premium package equips the EX with those features (auto-dimming mirror, 8-inch touchscreen bundle and safety features) plus a panoramic sunroof, LED interior lighting, an eight-way power passenger seat (with power lumbar) and heated and ventilated front seats. To this you can add the Premium Audio package, which includes heated rear seats, rear side window sunshades and a 10-speaker Harman Kardon surround-sound audio system.

Compared to an Optima EX, the SX comes with a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine,18-inch alloy wheels, dual exhaust tips, a sport-tuned suspension, adaptive xenon headlights, LED taillights, a rear spoiler, unique exterior styling details, upgraded gauges, the auto-dimming rearview mirror, ambient lighting, steering wheel-mounted paddle shifters, the 8-inch touchscreen bundle and rear side window sunshades.

The available Premium Technology package includes the entire contents of the EX's Premium and Premium Audio packages. It also adds automatic high-beam headlights, adaptive cruise control, a 360-degree parking camera system and an electronic parking brake. More safety features are also added, including a lane departure warning system, and a frontal collision mitigation system with automatic braking.

The quilted premium leather upholstery comes standard on the SXL trim level.

The SXL tops the Optima range and makes standard all of the above features. Also included are exterior chrome accents, unique interior trim and premium leather upholstery.

Every 2016 Kia Optima is front-wheel drive. The LX and EX come standard with a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 185 horsepower and 178 pound-feet of torque. A six-speed automatic transmission is standard.

As its name suggests, the LX 1.6T comes with a turbocharged 1.6-liter four-cylinder engine that makes 178 hp and 195 lb-ft. Kia pairs this engine with a seven-speed automated clutch transmission, which effectively operates as an automatic.

A turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that produces 245 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque is standard on the SX and SXL. The six-speed automatic is standard. In performance testing, a 2016 Kia Optima SX went from zero to 60 mph in 6.7 seconds, which is a slightly below-average time for a midsize sedan with an upgraded engine.

The EPA estimates fuel economy with the 2.4-liter at 28 mpg combined (24 city/35 highway). For the turbocharged engines, fuel economy ratings are 32 mpg combined (28 city/39 highway) for the 1.6-liter and 25 mpg combined (22 city/32 highway) for the 2.0-liter.

Standard safety features on the 2016 Kia Optima include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front-seat side airbags, a driver knee airbag, and side curtain airbags. A rearview camera is standard, while optional features include a 360-degree surround-view camera, rear parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert, a blind-spot monitoring system, lane departure warning and a forward collision warning and intervention system with emergency automatic braking.

The Uvo telematics system is standard on most trims, and includes roadside assistance, collision notification and driver restrictions and tracking for secondary drivers.

During testing, an Optima SX came to a stop from 60 mph in 112 feet, one of the best braking distances we've ever recorded for a vehicle in this segment with all-season tires.

With discernibly more punch than the lackluster and overly noisy 2.4-liter engine, the turbocharged 1.6-liter engine is a solid pick for overall power and fuel economy. We also like the seven-speed transmission's quick shifts. For V6-like power, though, the stronger 2.0-liter turbo-4 will be the engine to get. It's strong and smooth, if not quite as snappy overall as the Accord V6 or Camry V6.

The prevailing theme of the 2016 Kia Optima's driving experience is isolation. On one hand, this is a good thing, as the Optima exhibits a near-total lack of outside noise at cruising speed. The new chassis, extensive sound deadening and the optional laminated front windows do a remarkable job of keeping road, wind and tire noise at bay. Conversing at highway speeds requires little more than a whisper to carry your voice throughout the cabin.

The 2016 Optima's turbocharged engines are strong, but numb steering prevents the car from being truly engaging to drive.

On the other side of the isolation coin is the Optima's steering, which is overly light and uncommunicative when set in the Normal drive mode. Steering effort increases significantly when set to Sport mode, but even then, the wheel just doesn't give the feedback needed to impart driver confidence. The steering missteps are unfortunate, as the Optima (particularly the SX) offers a decent amount composure and body control around turns.

The sport suspension in models with the turbocharged 2.0-liter engine has seemingly been retuned since the last Optima, as it no longer produces the ride discomfort we experienced in the previous-generation car. Ride quality is a bit busier than in other performance-minded sedans in this class but shouldn't deter anyone from considering these models. We have yet to test the Optima in 2.4- or 1.6-liter configurations with the standard suspension setup.

Step into the 2016 Kia Optima and you'll find a handsome, spacious interior that, while not particularly impressive in any one area, is highly functional and accessible. Like other vehicles in this segment, there's an abundance of soft-touch plastics, but there are still hard touch points surrounding the center stack and on the door armrests. The front seats are quite comfortable, although they do not offer much lateral support, even in the performance-minded SX. The upper-crust SXL features quilted leather upholstery with a quality that clearly aims higher than typical midsize sedan offerings.

The Optima's 8-inch touchscreen comes with Kia's Uvo system. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration will also be available.

Tall rear-seat passengers may have some difficulty finding a comfortable seating position, as the rakish roofline reduces headroom in the back. The panoramic sunroof available on upper trim levels allows taller front-row occupants to sympathize with those in the rear, as it, too, cuts into headroom. On the bright side, there is plenty of legroom all around and the seats are reasonably wide. Cargo capacity is 15.8 cubic feet, which is right in line with the Optima's closest rivals.

The 8-inch touchscreen features large, easy-to-press virtual buttons and a sharp, legible picture. We like that the Optima utilizes physical buttons for navigating top-tier functions, as they require less concentration to operate accurately and safely on the road. Smartphone integration comes courtesy of Android Auto and, later in the model year, Apple CarPlay.

Midsize sedans like the 2016 Kia Optima aren't sports sedans, but driving dynamics matter even in day-to-day commuting, and it's where the new Kia Optima boasts the biggest improvement compared to its predecessor. There's a new electrical power-steering assist on the Optima SX and Optima SX-L that vastly improves steering feel and feedback, making the new Optima feel much more connected to the road than last year's model. Note that Optima LX and EX models – which we didn't drive – use the same unloved power-steering system from last year. Still, the suspension was nicely sorted, maintaining calm over large and small bumps, and staying composed on a twisty mountain road. The transmission responded quickly to the steering-wheel paddles, and the new turbocharged 2.0-liter engine had an excellent seat-of-the-pants feel, with good low-end torque.

ANDROID AUTO & APPLE CARPLAYFully integrated smartphone systems are our new favorite thing. After all, that's what we've really wanted our infotainment systems to operate like ever since the iPhone first came on the scene. Now, it's a reality. Just plug in your Android or iPhone, and duplicate controls appear onscreen.HARMAN/KARDON AUDIOWe're used to seeing harman/kardon audio systems in high-end luxury sedans, but a system like the available QuantumLogic7 surround audio system in a car like the 2016 Kia Optima is a rarity. And it sounds great, too, and audiophiles will appreciate harman/kardon's Clari-Fi system, which gets the most from MP3s.

The new Kia Optima's dash is bisected by a thick metallic band of trim, with the gauges, infotainment touch screen and vents above, and the audio system and climate-control buttons below. It's a clean design, and one that maintains the driver-oriented tilt of the previous car. All of the interior materials felt very high quality, with soft-touch surfaces on the door tops, dash and pretty much everywhere else you'd want them. The seats were plenty comfortable, and the back seat is downright huge, offering ample legroom even for tall passengers. Optima SXL models get Nappa leather and other high-end touches.

One school of thought on the Kia Optima's styling is that if it ain't broke, don't fix it. The old Optima was still a great-looking midsize sedan, sharp and modern, and the new one carries over much of the same sensibilities. There's a similar grille design, the same sweeping arc of chrome over the roof, and so on. Yet there is so much new about the 2016 Kia Optima that others say that it deserved standout styling to match. Whatever you think, it's still a sharp-looking car, even if it's not very distinct from its predecessor.

The base model 2016 Kia Optima LX comes with a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine mated to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Beyond that, there's a Driver Mode Select system that switches among Normal, Sport and Eco modes. Other Optima LX standard features include manual air conditioning, a 5-inch LCD screen with a rearview camera, and controls on the tilt-telescope steering wheel for the cruise control and audio system, which includes Sirius satellite radio, Bluetooth and Auxiliary and USB inputs. The two front seats both adjust six different ways, with power lumbar support for the driver, and adjustable height on the passenger side.

The 2016 Kia Optima Eco comes with a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch transmission, while the SX and SX-L get a turbocharged 2.0-liter engine and a much improved power-steering system. Kia has also made its blind-spot detection, rear cross-traffic alert and rear parking sensors available on LX and Eco models. Optima SX buyers can add active cruise control, automatic emergency braking, lane-departure warning, and a surround-view monitor as well. Other upgrade features include dual-zone climate control, a dual-panel panoramic sunroof with a fully opaque power sunshade, and the excellent harman/kardon audio system.

Base Optima LX and mid-grade Optima EX models get a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder with 185 horsepower connected to a 6-speed automatic transmission. Optima SX and SX-L models get a 2.0-liter turbocharged engine with 245 horsepower, also connected to a 6-speed automatic, albeit with steering-wheel-mounted paddles. Note that both engines have less horsepower but more torque compared to last year's similarly sized versions. New to the lineup this year is an Eco model, slotting between LX and EX. It comes with its own drivetrain, a 1.6-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 178 horsepower, but connected to a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission. Fuel economy is solid across the board, with LX models getting 37 mpg on the highway, SX getting 32 mpg, and the Eco model getting 39 mpg.2.4-liter inline-4185 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm178 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/37 mpg (LX), 24/35 mpg (EX)1.6-liter turbocharged inline-4178 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm195 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-4,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 28/39 mpg2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4245 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm260 lb-ft of torque @ 1,350-4,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/32 mpg

Prices start modestly enough for the 2016 Kia Optima. The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a base Optima LX will run the same as last year, about $ 22,700 with the $ 825 destination charge. The Eco model with its fuel-sipping 1.6-liter engine starts at about $ 24,800, while the EX will run about $ 25,700. If you want turbo power, the SX starts at $ 30,500 – nearly $ 2,000 more than last year's model – while the fully loaded, Nappa-leather SXL starts at $ 36,600. Those prices all compare nicely to the Honda Accord, Toyota Camry, Nissan Altima and others midsize sedans, being neither the most expensive nor the cheapest. Be sure to check out 's Fair Purchase Price to see how much others in your area paid for their 2016 Optimas. Over time, the Kia Optima has become a better and better investment, with resale values in the better half of the segment.

2016 Kia Optima Future Generations

Kia Optima Overview and History

Kia sounds surprisingly playful for a car manufacturer's name and as the brand's tag line reads, they really are all about the power to surprise. In fact, the Korean car builder has done so from its very inception in 1944 when it began as a steel tubing and bicycle parts producer. Six years later, Kia would reveal Korea's first bike.

Once the first step was made, Kia rushed through the process of developing light means of transport, such as scooters and fast forwarded through motorcycle building upon the point of reaching the necessary resources and experience to start building cars. The whole conversion process took Kia about two and a half decades to complete.

Bigger, richer and propelled by the enthrallment of having their own car brand, Kia poured a considerable amount of cash into a plant to accommodate its assembly lines.  By 1973, the new facility at Sohari saw completion, becoming Korea's first of its kind. Fully integrated and equipped with the latest cutting, bolting and welding machinery, the plant ulteriorly became the womb in which Kore's first internal-combustion gasoline engine would develop. The first Kia built car was unveiled one year later, a medium passenger car named Brisa.

Kia's sounding debut and modern technology caught the eye of different foreign producers(e.g. Peugeot and Fiat) with whom it partnered to house production of some of their models such as Peugeot's 604 and Fiat's 132.

By the 80's Kia had expanded to almost the size of its main competitor, Hyundai who was still the no. 1 Korean producer. Some of Kia's newer models at the time were rebadged and marketed abroad such as the Pride which sold overseas as the Ford Festiva. Only a few years later, Ford would manifest interest in the Avella, a subcompact car available in a 5-door hatchback version and a 4-dour sedan powered by either a 1.3 or a 1.5 liter engine. The Avella was rebadged as the Ford Aspire on the North American market.

The Korean manufacturer had not yet reached US shores on its own but it was only a few strokes away. In 1992, the brand was incorporated into the US and timidly started business through a tiny four-dealership network that sold its first vehicles in 1994. Ever since, Kia has been methodically expanding, reaching every state except north Dakota.

The main selling point of Kia cars was its affordability which was later supplemented by Kia's expansion into other market segments through the introduction of their first sport utility vehicle in 1995, the Sportage. From that point on, Kia suffered a fate very similar to that of Hyundai, company it would  later blend into due to unsuccessful management of financial difficulties.

Trouble began in the late '90 when the company became stagnant and thus unable to rollout new models. That's when Hyundai came into play. The major Korean car-builder got rid of  competition by means of merger. Both companies have experienced trouble and low sales due to reliability complaints over their vehicles.

The somewhat bland styling was not exactly what buyers were looking for in a car either so both had to undergo costly restructuring stages. Kia found itself rejuvenated by 2001 when, following its owner's example, it started working on a new vehicle line-up with an emphasis on quality and long-warranty offerings. Ever since, Kia has been steadily conquering segments of the European market, especially through the Cee'd, Sorento and Rio models. The development of newer, bolder designs is also among Kia's priorities, predating a future line-up with the announcement of concepts such as the Soul, unveiled at the Montreal auto show in 2006 and the Kee, a fresh coupe boasting strongly appealing style elements.

2016 Kia Optima Consumer Reviews

SXL Turbo 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Surprising and great
Like many people I doubted the Kia brand of vehicles just from historical knowledge. However after doing several weeks of research into mid size sedans the Optima kept near the top. I went and test drove Accords, Mazda 6, Audi A4, Fusion, Sonata, and Acura TLX. I own a 2010 Acura TSX commuter car that I like but is getting old. I found that each of these brands has some comfort or convenience issue I couldn't live with. The Kia Optima had the best balance of price, performance, convenience and great technology. Fit and finish are spot on for this class, no problems at all. Every car I have ever purchased I seem to always have to compromise and just get used to. The Optima is enjoyable right from the start and I always look forward to driving it. Sometimes hate to stop! Very glad I expanded my horizons while shopping. July 2018- still rides nice and a joy to drive. Getting 28.7 mpg avg 50% highway, 50% city . Maintenance has been far less than my other cars such as Acura, NIssan, Toyota by 30-40% Over 50,000 mi in 2 years.

Refined Evolution
I leased a 2013 Optima SXL and LOVED the car !! My lease expired and I got another SXL 2016 and WOW has this car evolved in three years not to mention how refined its become. The cabin is incredibly quiet, even on concrete highways at highway speed. The handling is SO much better than 2013 model, very refined with just the right feedback. The technology is amazing and if you are a techie, you will enjoy it all the more. SO happy with this car, I can't stop thinking about it.....LOVE IT !!

Two Weeks & just filling up the gas tank
I brought my new 2016 Kia Optima LX two weeks ago for a good deal 16k. The ride is quiet and comfortable. I suggest drive in eco mode to save money at the gas pump. I'm average just about what is advertised. Also the car has a lot of sex appeal grown up/sporty look. I would highly suggest anyone to give kia a chance!

SXL Turbo 4dr Sedan (2.0L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
OVER 700 MILES DURING FIRST WEEK OF OWNERSHIP
One week may seen too early for a review, but I've driven my Optima SXL over 700 miles the first week (that's average for me) and think I have a good sense of the car. If you don't like long reviews, know I REALLY like this vehicle and find new reasons why I like (bordering on love) this vehicle! I can't, and won't try going over all the systems and surprises I've found (too many). So, I'm 6'3, and 235 lbs. Previously I owned a VW Passat TDI SE w/sunroof and Nav (part of the VW buy back program). I purchased that vehicle because it had ample legroom for me (including my left leg extended) and it had excellent mpg (avg 40 mpg with an approx elevation change of 3k ft through mountains). On the downside, it didn't offer much for amenities. I wanted a vehicle that would make my 75 minute each way commute comfortable, and fun. Gas milage was important, but I was willing to lower my expectations there for the right mixture of features, comfort, cost, and reliability. I looked at a ton of vehicles before going with the Avalon (Avalon Limited, Avalon Hybrid, Lincoln, Fusion, Camry, Accord - all higher trim models). The Lincoln/Fusion (basically same vehicle), Camry and Accord didn't have the legroom I needed. The Avalon had the legroom, but the tilt steering didn't have much range and it felt like it was in my lap (though I was willing to ignore that before I found the Optima). The Camry had a "bland" feel inside, and the Accord just seemed too childlike for me. The only Avalon that had the features I wanted was the Limited (most of the features). Good price, but I really didn't want to go over 30-32k for my vehicle. I looked at the Optima due to its reviews. Honestly, I wasn't expecting I'd like the Optima. I just wanted to check all my options before I purchased the Avalon. My wife thought I was playing when we pulled into the Kia dealership; "KIA?!?! ARE YOU SERIOUS?!?!?!" Yea, I kind of felt the same way going in to the dealership. Everything I knew about Kia did not inspire images of well made vehicles. Well, I was wrong. Reviews and research support the 2016 is an excellent vehicle. I walked up to the white SXL vehicle, with chrome rims and opened the door to the white nappa leather and thought, "WOW!" Pictures don't do this vehicle justice. The interior looks great, and everything feels great. I saw a review stating the seats feel less comfortable on long trips. Well, I spend almost 3 hours a day in those seats and they're very comfortable. The audio system sounds great also. And, it operates equally well. I do wish there was a knob of sorts near the gear shift to navigate the system; The screen is a little reach with the seat pushed back. A minor, but "cool" thing: the LED interior lights look great at night against the white leather. Bottom line - the vehicle looks GREAT and, it has everything I could think of as an option. How does the SXL drive? As good as it looks. Smooth, quiet ride with excellent get up and go when I need it. I'm averaging 29 mpg overall. Not great coming from 40 mpg, but I think I can get that to 30-31 mpg. I did look at the Optimus Hybrid, but it didn't have all the features of the SXL. Also, it just didn't look as good as the SXL. Steering in the SXL is also excellent. I have noticed when taking curves through the mountains, the steering doesn't inspire control. I felt..., disconnected from the road. But, I also noticed switching to sport mode in those situations elevates the problem. The only thing I'm having difficulty adjusting to with the Optima is the name plate: Kia. But, that's fast becoming a non-issue! I purchased my SXL for $ 29,500 (USAA TrueCar) price the dealer honored. I'm beyond happy with this purchase.

2019 Kia Optima
"Great mid sized sedan"
Did a lot of shopping around before buying my EX Premium Optima and I love this car. This thing drives great, makes excellent gas mileage, and has all the features anyone could possibly want in 2019. The only negative Ive found with this car is the wheels are kind of lackluster looking and due to having an actual clutch in the transmission sometimes taking off from a stop in normal mode can feel like there is a delay between hitting the gas and the car moving. That aside, it's comfortable, it's affordable, and it's fun to drive.

2018 Kia Optima
"great car"
bought 2018 optima sx w/5200 miles on 8-10-2019 traded in 2013 sx / 2018 great ride-lots of power-interior black w/red trim sweeeet-lots of room front and back..expecting all features it did not happen..missing inbedded uvo voice control navg.sys- home link rear view mirror-interior "home" lite-trunk does not have enough spring to pop all the way up-it just opens it-corrected it using bungee cords-arm rest controls are slope away from drivers view instead of facing driver like my 2013 also miss the wrap around feel of the dash on the 2013 so make sure the optima you buy has ALL the options you want..or get the sxl model i gave up some stuff cause it was the low mileage and color i wanted
