Saab has faced some pretty tough times lately. An inconsiderate parent company, General Motors, tries to make Saab fit into GM's large corporate game plan, which has been a longstanding sore spot with Saab defenders. They claim that the giant multi-national does not understand the Saab audience and the appeal of these cars. Lately, and more importantly, Saab has been faced with the difficulties associated with having only a two car lineup. The much-loved 9000 line has been a favorite of Saabophiles and the press corps, but has been showing its age of late. The Saab 900, a beautiful and comfortable car, was a hit upon introduction in 1994, but sales have slowed because of increased competition from BMW, Mercedes and Lexus, in addition to nagging consumer concerns about the 900's build quality.

Despite some obvious difficulties and shortcomings, we still like Saab and the cars that they make. The Saab 900 is a comfortable, equipment-laden, near-luxury car that competes against entries from Volvo, BMW and Mercedes. Prices start around $ 25,000 for the 900 S three-door model, and climb all the way to $ 42,500 for the Saab 900 SE convertible.

The 900 is fun to drive with either of the car's engine choices. The turbocharged 2.0-liter unit, however, produces rocket-like acceleration that will char the front tires into oblivion if the driver is not careful. Torque steer is also a problem for cars equipped with the turbocharged engine. Handling feels a bit light in the 900 because the car is so upright and the seats are high off the floor. This gives the car a wallowy feeling through some turns, and can make weak-stomached passengers plead for Dramamine. The reality, however, is that the Saab 900 can hold its own with most imports from Germany and Japan when the road turns curvy.

The 900 is a good car. Unfortunately for Saab, there are plenty of good cars in the 900's price class. If your tastes run to the eccentric, however, this may be a better choice for you than a BMW 323is or Mercedes C280. You'll certainly stand out more in a crowd.

Saab 900 Overview and History

The 1994 model of the Saab 900 represents the second generation of this model which is now based on the Opel Vectra platform and even shares some parts with this car. Predecessor of 9-3, the Saab 900 is a compact car introduced by the Swedish manufacturer Saab in 1993 and kept in production until 1998.
The Swedes at Saab were building planes long before they were building cars so you know their standards ran pretty because in the aeronautical industry there's no room for mistake if you want to get back safely on the ground.

In 1937 the Svenska Aeroplan Aktiebolaget or the Swedish Aeorplane Company starting its business but by the end of WWII the good people down there had trouble placing their products on the market. A new market was needed, but for a new market you need a new product. And since the need to get people fast and safe from one place to another was on the rise, what better market than that of automobiles. So, in 1944, Project 92, or the manufacture of the first Saab car began.

The Saab 92 had a very interesting feature but it was an understandable occurence when you consider the man who drew up the car used to design planes: it had a very low drag coefficient of 0.31, one which many modern cars still struggle to attain.

After the Saab 92 came the Saab  in 1955 with an improved engine, upgraded to 3 cylinders and with the trapezoid grille that would become a trademark for the brand in later years. A wagon version of the car, the 95 came in 1959.

In the 60s, the general direction for Saab was bigger, as the 99 model proved. It also brought in more power, as the 99 was turbocharged, a feature common on later cars as well, a tradition for the Swedish automaker from then on. At the end of the decade, Saab reached the 1 million cars mark.

A new platform was needed by the end of the 70s for the aging Saabs, so the company signed a deal with Fiat which later spawned the Alfa Romeo 164, Fiat Croma, Lancia Therma and the Saab 9000. All these cars rode on the Type Four chassis, the result of the joint venture.

Ten years later, in 1987, Saab found itself in financial difficulties and was forced to shut down the plant at Arlov in order to cut costs. The fact that GM bought 50% of the stocks in 1990 helped alleviate the problems a little, but the company was still losing money and so the factory at Malmo in order to further reduce costs.

Recovery was going to come in the shape of the Saab 900, developed with the help of GM in 1993, a car which would give the company its first profitable year since the 80s. GM later acquired the rest of Saab's shares as was the initial agreement and from then on Saab became subsidiary to the American giant.

Current models, the 9-3 and the 9-5, are based on Opel chassis and are manufactured in Sweden and Germany. The SUV model 9-7x is being built in america, in the state of Ohio. Now, the company has announced that it would be releasing a new crossover SUV, the 9-4X, after the demise of the 9-2X, basically a rebadged Subaru Impreza.

I love my Saab
Bought my Saab in 1998, and have refused to replace it, no matter how dinged up it has gotten. I feel incredibly safe in it... it is built like a truck. And, for all its battle scars getting me around all these years. it is still my beautiful, copper-colored Saab. It has needed very few repairs, and when they have been needed I learned early it is best NOT to take it a Saab dealership. One problem is only place to put the coffee is in one coffee slot right over the transmission. Went to Sweden a few years ago and recognized first hand they drink very little coffee.

Reliable, fun and even practical
I've never had any engine and/or related mechanical problems. The car, even though it's a convertible, has a quieter interior than my Chevy Blazer. I like the four seats, and the back even folds-down to expose a cargo hole into the truck. Much more practical than a miata, S2000, etc. I have carried skis, and 8' pieces of lumber inside my convertible! The bad: the automatic climate control system uses a little fan to sense the inside temperature; that little fan frequently rattles, which can be annoying. The mechanics of the convertible top can be touchy -- $ 500 in repairs over the last 5 years. Overall good car. EXCELLENT value for money.

"Great stylish vehicle"
2.3 non turbo model, I’ve owned this vehicle for years. These vehicles ride great, very good handling. Engine and transmission is reliable. Only issues I’ve encountered are some slight electrical problems. I’m an ASE master technician and I enjoy working on this vehicle, the vehicle is very well designed. If you keep up with maintenance this vehicle will treat you with many years of great enjoyment. Overall I would recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a smaller vehicle that is fun to drive. It also helps to be familiar with euro. Vehicle needs.

"SAAB is a good value in a used car."
I purchased my 97 Saab in 2015 with only 68000 miles on it. I drove it all over Maui and Oahu. I am selling it now as I leave Hawaii to transfer to the mainland. Sadly it costs more (2300) to ship this car than it is worth or I would take to the mainland. However once I get to the mainland...I am looking for a Saab with the same features that mine has. 2.0 turbo 4 cyl. 5 speed.
