Thanks to its welcoming interior and excellent highway manners, the 2014 Dodge Durango is a great choice for a seven-passenger SUV.

The 2014 Dodge Durango is one of our favorite options for a six- or seven-passenger SUV. The current generation not only has the roomy seating and polished ride that you'd expect in a family-oriented, three-row utility vehicle, it also has an optional V8 engine and impressive tow ratings that you typically see only on larger, more traditional SUVs. For 2014, Dodge has updated the Durango to help it keep up with the competition in this price range. Although the even more aggressive styling is what you'll notice first, it's the less obvious changes that make the biggest difference on the 2014 Dodge Durango.

The changes in the cabin are particularly striking, as the Durango gets an all-new instrument panel and an updated dash that accommodates a large, intuitive 8.4-inch touchscreen that uses an upgraded version of the company's Uconnect system to provide smartphone app integration, text-to-speech capability for text messages and a more robust voice control interface. High-quality interior surfaces abound, and much like its Jeep Grand Cherokee cousin, the 2014 Durango feels decidedly upscale for its class.

On the mechanical side, the 2014 Durango has a new eight-speed automatic transmission, which serves up impressively smooth shifts while providing a numerically small but still significant improvement in EPA fuel economy ratings. The new transmission also makes better use of what power the base V6 engine has to offer -- although we've steered consumers toward the more powerful V8 in past years, a V6 Durango merits stronger consideration in 2014 due to its more energetic performance.

Of course, we'd still recommend the V8 if you intend to take frequent advantage of the 2014 Dodge Durango's towing capability, which, along with its rich interior is one of the best reasons to consider this SUV. However, the Durango doesn't provide as much cargo room as most of its rivals, and its ride quality and handling aren't quite up to snuff, either. Well-regarded family crossovers like the 2014 Chevrolet Traverse, 2014 Mazda CX-9 and 2014 Toyota Highlander offer considerably more capacity, a smoother ride and more capable handling. The updated 2014 Durango is appealing for its bold styling and refined interior, but its shortcomings elsewhere should also be considered.

The 2014 Dodge Durango large crossover SUV is available in four trim levels: SXT, Limited, R/T and Citadel. You'll also come across Durangos with Rallye badging; the Rallye is an equipment package on the SXT. Seven-passenger seating is standard across the board; optional second-row captain's chairs reduce capacity to six.

Standard equipment on the SXT includes 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, heated sideview mirrors, full power accessories, cruise control, tri-zone automatic climate control (includes separate rear air-conditioning), a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cloth upholstery, a fold-flat front passenger seat, a 60/40-split-folding and reclining second-row seat, a 50/50-split-folding third-row seat, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a six-speaker sound system with a 5-inch touchscreen display, satellite radio, and USB and auxiliary inputs.

Several option packages are available on the Durango SXT. The 23B package adds roof-rail crossbars, upgraded cloth upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat with four-way lumbar, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and satellite radio. The Popular Equipment Group adds heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, a rearview camera, rear parking sensors and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. The Rallye package adds 20-inch wheels, polished exhaust tips and additional body-color exterior trim while deleting the roof rails.

The Limited has most of the above equipment as standard but reverts to 18-inch wheels. It also comes with a remote ignition, leather upholstery, driver memory settings, a six-way power passenger seat, a 115-volt power outlet and an 8.4-inch touchscreen display with an upgraded version of Dodge's Uconnect system. The latter includes voice control, text-to-speech messaging capability, emergency roadside assistance, streaming Internet radio (delayed availability) and 3G Wi-Fi capability (via an extra-cost contract). The larger touchscreen and related infotainment features are optional on the SXT.

The R/T essentially includes the upgrades of the Limited (minus the roof rails) along with a V8 engine, 20-inch alloy wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, xenon headlights (low beams only), body-color accents (similar to the Rallye), a power liftgate and an upgraded nine-speaker sound system.

The Citadel reverts to a less aggressive suspension tune and a standard V6 engine, but otherwise builds on the R/T's equipment list, adding automatic high-beam control, automatic wipers, a sunroof, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, an eight-way power front-passenger seat, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, and a navigation system with traffic updates and a Yelp-based search engine. All these amenities are optional on the R/T.

Optional on both the R/T and Citadel is the Technology Group, which includes adaptive cruise control, a forward collision warning/mitigation system and a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alerts. Also available on these trims is a rear-seat Blu-ray/DVD entertainment system with dual video screens and an HDMI input. Options for the whole lineup include a towing package, a skid-plate package (except R/T) and an in-dash CD player.

The 2014 Dodge Durango is offered with either a V6 or V8 engine, and all models come with an eight-speed automatic transmission. While the SXT only comes with the V6 and the R/T only comes with the V8, the Limited and Citadel trims can be equipped with either one. Depending on the model, rear-wheel drive, all-wheel drive or four-wheel drive is available. The light-duty AWD system is only available with the V6 engine. The on-demand 4WD system features dual-range gearing (which makes it more capable on rugged terrain) and is standard with the V8 engine.

The 3.6-liter V6 engine is rated at 290 horsepower (295 hp with the Rallye package) and 260 pound-feet of torque. The EPA's estimated fuel economy is 20 mpg combined (18 city/25 highway) with rear-wheel drive and 19 mpg combined (17 mpg city/24 mpg highway) with all-wheel drive. In testing, a Durango equipped with the V6 and rear-wheel drive went from zero to 60 mph in 7.8 seconds, an average time for the class.

The 5.7-liter V8 is good for 360 hp and 390 lb-ft of torque. Rear-drive models are rated at 17 mpg combined (14 city/23 highway), while 4WD versions are rated at 16 mpg combined (14 mpg city/22 mpg highway).

Properly equipped, a V8 Durango can tow up to 7,400 pounds, while the V6 version tops out at 6,200 pounds -- in either case, far more than most rival crossover SUVs can tow.

Antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, trailer sway control, front side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags are standard on every 2014 Dodge Durango. A rearview camera and parking sensors are optional on the SXT and standard on all other Durangos.

Models with Uconnect Access (included with the 8.4-inch touchscreen) have an emergency telematics system that connects you with 911 operators at the touch of a button and provides stolen vehicle tracking. Optional on the Limited, Citadel and R/T is a blind-spot monitoring system with cross-traffic alerts. The Technology Group, available on R/T and Citadel models, now includes a more advanced forward collision warning and mitigation system that automatically applies the brakes in potential collision situations.

In government tests, the Durango received four out of a possible five stars for overall protection, with four stars for total frontal impact safety and five stars for total side-impact protection. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety tests, the Durango earned the highest possible rating of "Good" for its performance in moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength crash tests. Its seat and head restraint design was also rated "Good" for whiplash protection in rear impacts.

In testing a Durango in Limited trim with the V6 engine and rear-wheel drive came to a stop from 60 mph in 124 feet, which is average for this segment.

Thanks in part to its light steering effort, the 2014 Dodge Durango is fairly easy to back into a parking spot, but unfortunately it remains light at higher speeds, too. This translates to a rather disconnected feeling from a twisting mountain road. The Durango is still as well mannered as any other SUV in these conditions, though it isn't as confidence-inspiring as you might think given Dodge's sporty brand image. We've also found the Durango's ride quality to be pretty mediocre when driving on stretches of rough pavement. Competitors like the Highlander or Ford Explorer are generally more comfortable.

Low-end torque is not a strong suit of the V6, but once the Dodge Durango is moving, the engine pulls respectably. Midrange acceleration is adequate for passing and merging, and there's a noticeable improvement in responsiveness with the new eight-speed automatic transmission. As expected, the V8 offers brisk all-around performance and a satisfyingly deep exhaust note on acceleration.

Modern and functional, the 2014 Dodge Durango's cabin has been designed with families in mind. Regardless of trim level, the design is attractive and features upscale materials.

With this latest update to the Durango, materials quality is now class-leading, and the cabin has an uncommonly elegant feel for this class. The available 8.4-inch touchscreen display is attractive and easy to use. The gauges look better, too, with crisp graphics and a useful trip computer display.

The front seats are roomy and comfortable, but the standard second-row bench has rather flat cushioning (which helps promote a flatter load floor when the seat is folded) and doesn't offer quite as much legroom as roomier rivals. The optional second-row captain's chairs, however, are as comfortable and roomy as the front seats. Access to the third row requires a moderate squeeze past the middle seats, even with the fold-and-tumble captain's chairs, but it's no more taxing than other SUVs in this class. As in its rivals, the third row seats are also confining for adults, and those low-mounted seat cushions make them better suited to smaller passengers.

With the second- and third-row seats folded down, the Durango can carry up to 84.5 cubic feet of cargo. This is a respectable amount, but competing large crossover SUVs like the Chevy Traverse and Mazda CX-9 offer considerably more cargo space.

Despite the 2014 Dodge Durango’s mass, the 290-horsepower Pentastar V6 accelerates briskly, delivers ample passing power and tows willingly, its performance and fuel economy enhanced by a smooth new 8-speed automatic transmission. The V6 will be more than equal to most towing (up to 6,200 pounds) and cargo hauling, but for heavier trailers (up to 7,400 pounds), or just picking up the pace, the optional 390-horsepower Hemi V8 may be preferable. Not only does it enhance thrust, it makes seductive V8 sounds in the process. Like all vehicles in this category, the 2014 Durango feels ponderous compared to passenger cars, and its steering is a bit numb. But its responses are agile versus competing SUVs, particularly in the sporty R/T. Ride quality is smooth in most trim levels (firmer in the R/T), the redesigned cabin is quiet, and the powerful brakes seem to be fade free despite repeated hard use.

DURANGO R/TAbout the closest you’ll get to an SRT version of the 2014 Durango, the R/T’s lowered sport suspension, recalibrated shocks and springs, and aggressive low-profile 20-inch tires make this a very agile vehicle by full-size SUV standards. Oh, did we mention it’s got a Hemi?ADAPTIVE CRUISE CONTROLAdaptive cruise is a plus in slow-and-go traffic, but it leaves overly large gaps at higher speeds that invite other drivers to cut in front. The Durango’s new adaptive cruise option not only reduces the minimum gap to the vehicle ahead, its adaptive function can be suspended without shutting the system off.

The interior of the 2014 Durango reflects luxury-car quality and craftsmanship, an update that emphasizes comfort, premium materials, visual elegance and supreme quiet. Limited and Citadel trims offer such features as heated and ventilated front seats, heated 2nd-row seating and standard leather seating. The Durango’s 28 possible configurations allow for any combination of people and cargo, from the roomy spot behind the 2nd-row seat to the full-length flat cargo floor created by the flush-folding front passenger seat. A purposeful black color scheme, highlighted by bright trim elements, distinguishes the sporty R/T, and in Durangos equipped with 2nd-row captain’s chairs a new pass-through feature eases 3rd-row access.

Freshened for 2014, the Durango’s front fascia sports a set of LED eyeliners under the projector-beam headlights that serve as daytime running lights. There are three versions of Dodge’s familiar cross-hair grille, all slimmer than their predecessors. A new LED array makes a double span across the rear end, the distinctive “racetrack taillight” display. Rallye and R/T models are distinguished by more body-colored trim, as well as the R/T’s lower ride height, while others get more brightwork, especially the top-of-the-line Citadel. There are seven new wheel designs, ranging from 18 to 20 inches, and nine colors. The Durango has been one of the most readily identifiable of all SUVs, as well as one of the best-looking, since its 1998 introduction.

The entry-level SXT trim features the Uconnect infotainment system with voice command, 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels, fog lights, heated power side mirrors, tri-zone automatic climate control, three 12-volt outlets, tilt/telescopic steering column and an AM/FM/CD radio with WMA/MP3 support, Sirius Satellite Radio and auxiliary input jack. At the high end of the Durango spectrum, the Citadel adds 20-inch wheels, a power liftgate, power sunroof, configurable instruments, 8.4-inch center-stack touch screen with 3D Navigation, HID headlights, Nappa leather seats, heated and ventilated front seats, rain-sensing wipers, adaptive cruise control, Rear Cross Path Detection system, heated power tilt/telescopic steering wheel and keyless Enter-N-Go.

Options vary by trim level and include a new navigation radio system with 8.4-inch touch screen, voice activation and Sirius Travel Link; configurable instrumentation, power sunroof, ParkView rearview camera, ParkSense rear park assist, Blind-spot Monitoring, auto-dimming high beams, UConnect phone (Bluetooth), Alpine premium audio, Bluetooth streaming audio, heated 2nd-row seats, power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers, a heated steering wheel and skidplates. Option packages include the Trailer Tow Group IV that adds a 220-amp alternator, heavy-duty engine oil cooler, Class IV hitch receiver and load-leveling rear shocks. The Rallye Appearance Group adds 20-inch polished wheels, black bezel headlights and body-colored trim.

On all but the R/T trim the 2014 Dodge Durango’s standard engine is Chrysler’s award-winning Pentastar V6. Unquestionably one of the best V6 engines ever from Chrysler, it has more than enough power to satisfy most SUV drivers. Equipped with dual-overhead cams and variable-valve timing, the 3.6-liter Pentastar is capable of achieving maximum performance without sacrificing fuel economy. The Durango’s optional 5.7-liter Hemi V8 features a fuel-saver mode that seamlessly deactivates four of the eight cylinders when full power is not required. When power is needed, however, the Hemi has it in spades, delivering 360 horsepower and 390 lb-ft of tow-ready torque. Both engines are mated to a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission, new for 2014, and AWD is available with either.3.6-liter V6290 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm260 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/25 mpg (RWD), 17/24 mpg (AWD)5.7-liter V8360 horsepower @ 5,150 rpm390 lb-ft of torque @ 4,250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/23 mpg (RWD), 14/22 mpg (AWD)

The 2014 Dodge Durango SXT has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 30,790 for the RWD model and $ 33,190 for AWD. The Rallye bumps the price to $ 33,985, Limited models start at $ 36,990, the V8-powered R/T at $ 39,990, and Citadel pricing, the top of the order, opens at $ 41,990. With the Hemi V8 and AWD a fully loaded Citadel tops out right around $ 50,000. These prices compare well with comparably equipped versions of the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer, none of which offers a V8 option. To get the best Durango deal, be sure to take a look at the Fair Purchase Price on to learn what buyers in your area are actually paying. As for resale, we expect the new Durango will probably hold its own against the Chevrolet Traverse, but still fall short of the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer.

Dodge Durango Overview and History

When Dodge reintroduced the Durango in 2011, it was unlike anything seen in the SUV segment before, providing its comfortable three-row seating, driving range, power, muscular design and cargo volume.
Dodge practically patented the muscle car. Little did they know they would become one of America's top Automobile manufacturers and that the Charger model, for example, particularly the 66-67 one, would trigger jaw dropping amazement at its sight. John Francis and Horace Elgin Dodge were making bikes in 1901 when they decided to move their company, the Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan.

Before Cadillac would outrun Dodge in engine development years later, the Brothers were supplying car parts for many producers. Their early involvement in the process of making cars lead them to starting their own business, entering the queue for a large order of recognition and notoriety. Setting the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company in 1914 brought them a step closer to the counter.

The first Dodge automobiles shared some of Ford Model T's features but outran the latter in terms of ignition and other improvements meant to ease driving. One of the major advantages Dodge offered was a smooth, electrical start rather than the sluggishly classic crank start. Built for the middle class, the cars quickly became a commercial success, mainly due the clever blend of reliable ruggedness, engine improvements and style elements.

By 1917, Dodge had produced enough cars to start thinking expanding in other car-manufacturing areas. Trucks seemed like something they could successfully take on and the Dodge truck division came to being. Dodge trucks were used by the US army during the First World War after which they kept being used as commercial vehicles.

The Dodge brothers sold their business to Dillon, Read & company for the astoundingly large sum of  $ 146 million, said to be the largest amount in history to have been paid at the time. Dillon helmed Dodge management only for 3 years, passing the new acquisition to the Chrysler Corporation  on July 31, 1928.

Due to Chrysler's financial conquests over some European automotive groups, such as the British Rootes group and the French Simca, Dodge is introduced to Europe in the 60's. Lightweight commercial vehicles are sold here under a different badge. The Dodge 50 series is fairly well received in the UK, becoming a favorite for military and utility operations.

1977 brought forth the collapse of Chrysler's European subsidiary and its adjacent Dodge branch altogether. The Dodge factory as well as some rights to use the Dodge name were purchased by Renault who resumed the production of Dodge's commercial vehicles. However, Renault only made use of the Dodge name till the 80's when it gave up control over the name rights. Only the factory was kept.

Dodge is currently part of the DaimlerChrysler group and has been lately been know for its trucks rather than retro-future stylized muscle cars as it used to be know for during the 60's and 70's. Much like any other American car builder, Dodge garnered huge amounts of success at the time with the launch of the Charger and Coronet models, to name only a few.

As far as the company's current status is concerned, trucks make the most sales, representing 78% of the division's venue. Still undergoing intensive promotion in Europe, Dodge have sought to reach  the same type of customer it did back in the 70's by launching a series of  mean-looking, rowdy  road-tamers such as the Nitro and Caliber.

2014 Dodge Durango Consumer Reviews

Loving It!!! (so far)
I recently bought the 2014 Dodge Durango after 8 months of researching it. Wanted the R/t but I ended up purchasing the Limited Trim level which to my surprise had a Hemi! I believe that the Limited trim level with the Hemi is a great value for all the features you get, almost like having a Citadel Minus extra chrome and rain sensing wipers but at a much cheaper price! I had to get used to the gas mileage which is to be expected with a V-8. The Uconnect is awesome, though I had some issues with the bluetooth pairing, keeping my phone paired. This is largely due to the software being capatible with iOS 6 and not 7 (apple users). Updates are to come for that. Other than that I love It!

Limited 4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Impressed until recently
Overall, we like this vehicle. It drives great, is comfortable to ride in and bucket seats for the 2nd row are a great feature. It was recently when we noticed things we did not like. Changing a turn signal bulb is impossible. The whole front bumper needs removed in order to reach the light, it is not an easy fix as other vehicles. Nor is finding the battery. My husband needed to jump his work truck and he could not because the battery is not easily accessible. There is a blind spot for the driver on the right side between the 2nd and 3rd row seats, the head rest is in the way and the area between the 2 windows is very wide.

SXT 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
My favorite vehicle
I wanted to write a review because satisfied customers rarely write reviews. We have had our Durango for over 2 years and absolutely love it. We didn't get the high end package, just the lowest level that also includes the towing package. We have a 20ft Forest River RPod camper that the Durango tows easily. I just recently used it tow the camper from Nevada to Illinois and had no problems whatsoever, except for 6 inches of expected snow while towing. The surefooted AWD Durango had no troubles whatsoever. The load leveling suspension works very well and I don't even have a weight distribution hitch, just sway control. There have been a couple of reprograms of the computer that were easily handled at home when Chrysler mailed a USB to do the update yourself. No biggie, glad they are staying on top of it. Most computer programs even on your home PC need updating at least once a month. So, we have been very, very pleased with our purchase and you just can't beat the styling. Update 6/27/2017: Still our favorite vehicle. Has 45000 miles on it now. Still using it tow and travel and now for commutes. Great vehicle. Update 6/28/2018: Still our favorite vehicle. My wife has taken it as here primary driver and I've had to use our car (*sigh), a 2015 Hyundai Sonata that is nowhere near as fun to drive as the Durango. We still use it to tow our camper. So far so good. Update 6/28/2019: It now has 87,000 miles on it. My wife has a long commute and uses it as her daily driver so it's starting to rack up the miles. This is still our favorite vehicle. I have to beg my wife to take our other car to try to save some miles on it. Just used it two weeks ago to tow our 5 hours north and back for a music festival. We put a set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S on it and the gas mileage went down by 1-2 mpg but these are quietest best gripping tires I've ever owned. This thing is a tank in the snow.

Pleasantly surprised
I bought this vehicle for my wife solely for the comfortable seats. Out of all the vehicles we tried out the Durango was the most configurable by far. We now have 22k miles on this car and I still can't believe how good it drives. There has only been 1 issue and that was a loose bolt on the steering shaft that caused some play in the steering. Quickly about me, I'm a little pickier than most when it comes to vehicle quirks. I've done all the oil changes myself on this car to this point and do like the unique filters this engine uses. This is easily one of the best vehicles I've ever driven. I'd put it in the realm of an Audi or the new Cadillac though not as nice of an interior obviously
rowdyerring,
Great riding comfort and stability.
This is the Best All Wheel Drive vehicle I have ever owned. Very safe and comfortable. Pulls my 4200 lb. camper pretty well. I would buy another one. No problems at all.

Highly Impressed with this SUV
Recently purchased and absolutely love it! I’ve never had a V8 before and although it’s not so great on mileage (averaging18 mpg) It’s got terrific passing power and plenty of room. If you can find one with the Adaptive Cruise Control snatch it up. I traded my boring Highlander in for this and couldn’t be happier! More luxurious, better technology and way better looking. I’ve had all kind of SUV’s and this one is best all around.

Favorite Car
It’s just a well built car. 5.7 has A LOT of power. Just a great all around SUV.

Impressed
So far impressed with this suv, this is my first American made vehicle and I purchased extra warranty which I have not had any reason to use. I travel a lot and prefer driving this suv than to rent something else. Owned it for almost 5 years 86k miles on and still loving it.
sconnynepalese,
Best all around SUV available!
I don't typically write reviews on cars but after owning our Durango RT for several years now and really getting to know the vehicle I figured I'd share. From the moment we bought our Durango it's done nothing but exceed our expectation. The comfort and power these vehicles offers blows away anything else on the market in my opinion. As far as room the Durango has it I'm 6'4 and easily fit in the second row with plenty of leg room as well as room for a rear facing car seat. Reliability has been perfect just needing normal maintenance like oil changes and air filter. I've used this vehicle to tow a 5K lbs trailer for the last two years and and its had plenty of power and is very stable at highway speeds of up to 80 mph. Fuel economy is also good averaging about 19 mpg in town and on long highway trips up to 26 mpg. In all I would say I couldn't be happier if I was going to change anything I would of preferred a panoramic sunroof over the standard size it comes with but other than that I wouldn't change a thing.
awokepogo,
Great SUV size having 3rd row
It has been low maintenance, great look with amazing power when needed.Gas mileage is nice compare to larger SUVs like an Escalade. It is very maneuverable and fits in parking spots alot better. Easy access to the 3rd row by design. The 2nd row bucket seats are very comfortable and the climate control easliy heats or cools evenly even in back.

Awesome truck with bad MPG
Awesome truck with a lot of space , very powerful motor for whatever you need with a really sport and luxury interior and best of all with a great looking. So far a very reliable SUV ( Water pump replacement at 40k miles under warranty)

My first lemon
After having this car made to order at the 30 mile mark, the whole back end came out. Little did I know that this would be the start of all this vehicles issues I never thought were possible. The brakes were never the same after they attempted to repair the back end twice. When I stop the vehicle it sounds like an old metal can coming to a stop. My navigation went crazy while I was on vacation and it took me and my family to another side of Virginia while traveling from New York. And one of the most important problems for this vehicle is that the 8 speed transmission, constantly slips while your driving. The dealership has no fix for it, but wont say that to you.
muscleacceptor,
Really nice!
Reading the reviews, I found I was not the only one that came out of a Tahoe into a Citadel Durango. I traded in my 2011 Tahoe for the Durango, which was a very good trade. Like others I have not looked back either. This vehicle to me has all the bells and whistles...so much my "Geek Granddaughter" programed it. I have received several compliments on how nice my vehicle looks! The only thing I added were running boards due to several friends having trouble entering in and out of vehicle. This feature really looks nice as well! I highly recommend this vehicle
pugsleyimprudent,
Excellent Vehicle. Highly Recommended
Quiet comfortable ride, excellent handling for class of vehicle. Plenty of power (5.7 Hemi), great hauling/cargo capacity, very comfortable seats and plenty of interior room even in the 3rd row seat. I've had absolutely no problems with my car (purchased October 2013) whatsoever. Sharp looking all round, nicely finished interior appointments...just a really well done vehicle. Great for long distance family trips, fishing/hunting trips, canoe hauling, mild "off-roading" and regular suburbia day to day use. I haven't towed with it yet. This is my favorite car so far and I've had a lot of vehicles over the past 47 years. For all the hype, Nav system doesn't "blow my hair back". It's okay...but my phone does a better job of it to be honest. With that said, this is the 4th built in navigation system I've had (300C, Lexus RX350, Lincoln MKX previously) and this one is as good as the others. I don't know why the manufacturers don't cough up a few extra bucks for a decent CPU in these things. If you're looking for a gas sipper, this is not the car for you (overall for my lead foot about 17.5 MPG). Otherwise, if you after well styled utility and the solid feel that only comes with a large vehicle, this will float your boat for sure!

50,000 miles and extremely satisfied
I am an engineer who took a new job approximately 18 months ago that requires me to travel extensively for work using my own vehicle. Sometimes I carry clients to dinner or job sites while other times I carry work-related cargo that requires a relatively spacious vehicle. Additionally, I knew that I would be driving long distances, often traveling in the evening after a long day. So, I wanted something with adaptive cruise control and automated collision warning systems plus excellent headlights to reduce my fatigue and enhance safety. It needed to be reasonably spacious as I am a relatively big person at 6'2" and 220 pounds and my associate who travels with me frequently is 6'7". Finally, I wanted something relatively fuel efficient for its size because my mileage reimbursement is the same whether I get 15 or 30 mpg, while still having decent power. After studying the vehicles available, I bought a 2014 Durango Citadel V-6 RWD with the Tech Package. It also came with the rear buckets, which I might have otherwise skipped but it was the least optioned Citadel with Tech Package and black interior I could locate in my area. (I find that I can't keep a tan interior looking clean.) After 18 months and 50,000 miles, I have come to love my Durango and feel I made the right choice. Compared to my previous vehicle, a 2004 Chevrolet Avalanche, the Durango feels downright nimble. The independent rear suspension keeps it on track even on rough roads and the ride is firm but not harsh. It seems to drive smaller than it is. I've had exactly two problems, neither of which I consider a big deal. First, the Malfunction Indicator Light came on around 40k miles although it was running fine. I finally got it to the dealer about 500 miles later and it turned out to be a faulty oil pressure sensor. The service writer at the dealer noted that they had seen about 15 other Pentastar V-6s with the same problem. He also noted that the replacement part was a different part number and had been revised by Chrysler. Consequently, he said it was unlikely the problem would occur again. It was repaired under warranty and should be covered by the 5/100 powertrain warranty if if occurs again. The other problem I noted at about the 30k miles was that one of the taillights had accumulated moisture inside. The dealer replaced the entire taillight housing, also under warranty. Other than those things, it has been as reliable as the sunrise. The car has been squeak and rattle-free so far. The upgraded Napa leather that comes with the Citadel trim (I think it's optional on the R/T) still looks like new, especially on the outside driver seat bolster where I slide in and out. My Avalanche, by comparison, suffered considerable wear on this area. Living in the southeastern US, I really like the ventilated seats. The effect is subtle; you don't really feel a blast of air on your backside. But, it keeps your back and posterior from getting all sweaty. I also like the heated wheel, which comes as a surprise. It gets toasty in a hurry. The seats themselves are pretty firm, but I find them to be supportive for seven or eight hour trips. I find the V-6 to have plenty of power for my needs. I test drove the Hemi and it's quite sweet, but I didn't think it was so much better that I could justify the increase in fuel consumption. I like the way the Pentastar sounds when it's winding up, it's a pleasant growl. The 8 speed transmission works very smoothly, but it does take a moment to drop several gears if you make a sudden call for acceleration. Once it finally drops to the right gear, it gets up and goes quite nicely. The fuel economy has gotten better as the car has accumulated miles and gotten broken in. If you can keep the speed down to below 75 mph, it gets great highway mileage. I routinely get 26 to 28 mpg on long trips. If I use the adaptive cruise control and get behind a semi doing 65-70 mph, I can get 30 mpg. However, if you are driving in the upper 70s to 80 mph and/or are in hilly country the mileage goes down to the low 20s. It's amazing the difference 5 mph makes. If you go much over around 73 mph, the transmission drops from super-duper overdrive 8th gear to super overdrive 7th. If you are in hilly country or risking a speeding ticket, it will hold 7th even downhill, presumably as part of the programming to keep it from hunting between gears. No car is perfect, so there are a few things I might change. First the stereo makes a lot of bass, but the crossover must be pretty high because it's obvious it's coming from the subwoofer in the back. One review summed it up pretty well when they noted it was like living next door to a disco. Some tracks (such as "Whiskey" by Marian Hill) give it fits to the point that I had to turn the bass down. That said, when I am alone in the car I sometimes play it pretty loud... The GPS works okay, but when you ask it to search for POIs it only gives you the distance but not direction. So, if you ask it for the nearest McDonald's, for example, it may tell you the nearest one is 3 miles away but you don't know if that's in front of you or behind. I wish you could search along the route and it would indicate if it's ahead or behind. I know they can do this because the fuel prices app tells you this. The trim plate at the edge of the cargo area looks like metal but it's really just metallic-looking plastic. It's all scarred up from sliding cases and luggage in and out of the back. Real metal or less scuff-prone plastic without the faux metal look would be preferable. Finally, the biggest problem is one of perception. The Dodge nameplate is not very upscale and Chrysler is not known for its stellar reliability. While I am not particularly worried about driving a prestigious brand, the resale value doesn't appear to be the greatest for these reasons. This is offset, however, by the fact that I was able to get the car at a reasonably big discount relative to MSRP. So, I don't think I will take too much of a beating but I would not buy unless given a good deal to compensate for mediocre resale compared to a Toyota or Honda. Overall, though, it's been smooth, fast, economical, comfortable, and reliable. The adaptive cruise control makes long trips on crowded interstates vastly less tiring and the forward collision warning has been useful once or twice while giving few false alarms. If a meteorite fell out of the sky and smashed it tonight, I would go buy another one tomorrow.

Comfortable and Refined Boat Tower
We purchased a 2014 Durango Limited V6 All Wheel Drive. My wife and I wanted a vehicle that provided comfortable seats, smooth car-like ride, plenty of cargo space, and excellent towing ability. We have a 3,000 pound fishing boat that we tow to fishing spots in Minnesota and Wisconsin each summer. We looked at Durango, Enclave, Explorer, Pathfinder, Santa Fe, and Traverse. In addition, we looked at the Ram 1500 which my wife was leaning toward. In the end, we both agreed that the Durango best met all our needs, and after 13000 miles, we are very satisfied with our decision. We average 24.6 MPG highway without the boat, which is helped by the smooth 8-speed transmission. We got the tow package which I highly recommend.
interestrigil,
Buying new vehicles since 1980. Best one yet.
My only issue so far was with the option choices. I wanted heated ventilated seats but had to take the Nav. and sunroof to get them. I didn't want either so I went with the SXT Plus pkg. with heated cloth seats. I've had the HEMI before and planned to get it again. When I test drove a Citadel with the V6 I was amazed by the power. The 3.6L combined with the 8 speed transmission hooked me. I love the size of the Durango and the 3rd row seat is surprisingly comfortable. It's a shame to call the paint job grey when the Maximum Steel Metallic is gorgeous and the exterior has just enough chrome looking trim. The 8.4" touch screen, Bluetooth and Sirius have been great for me. Solid, quiet interior with plenty of useful features and a classy look and feel. I never thought I would want a back up camera but I'm glad I got one. For a larger vehicle it handles surprisingly well. I had only had the vehicle a short time when another driver decided to change lanes abruptly and into my driver's side. I was clear to my right and swerved 2 lanes to miss him but the ESC quickly took control and had me back on my (not so) merry way. Between my wife and I we have owned/leased vehicles from Jeep, Ford, Chrysler, Mazda, Plymouth, Pontiac, Dodge and Oldsmobile. This one is the best of the bunch.
zebraaudio,
I love this thing
Great gas mileage (24 mpg highway in summer, 17-18 around town in winter). Heated steering wheel Comfortable Plenty of room, 'v6 tows my smallish boat fine Early on in cold winter day, brakes seemed to hang and make noise when backing up. They came and picked it up on a flat bed, said no problem seen and it never happened again - all free, so I cannot complain. Front air dam is low and busted off in snow bank. Was worried about chrysler quality (been burned before) but so far so good except for recalls (see cons). Love the 8 speed auto, turn knob selector ok now that I am used to it and it is less intrusive. Not as cool as push buttons on old dodge darts though!
chapmarried,
My favorite car ever!
I'll get the bad stuff out of the way first. There are two things I do NOT like about this car. First, the glove box is just too small. Second, the rotary dial gear selector is not my favorite. I would rather have a stick. If you're thinking gas mileage...well, it's a big honking SUV. Get over it or go by a Smart Car. So, beyond that this car is seriously my favorite and I have had a LOT of cars. It is hugely comfortable - highway or city. Handling is excellent, turn radius excellent. The cabin is quiet, seats are comfortable, instrumentation and controls just what I would have hoped for. I REALLY love the adaptive cruise control. You can fill it with stuff or you can fill it with people and everyone/everything is in a happy place. 6 footers (with any range of motion...which means don't put your great, great grandpa back there) can comfortably get into the 3rd row seats. I have the 5.7L Hemi Citadel and just love it. Styling is an individual thing but I just couldn't see myself in a Buick. The Durango is a solid muscle car that is happy to carry all the groceries, rifles, canoes, and wifey Flea Market stuff you could ever want. I've owned my 2014 for almost 18 months and 15,000 miles (yes, low miles) and have not had a single problem (there have been three recalls which were handled without issue and except for the trips to the dealer had no impact on me). I would buy one again tomorrow...and in fact, I did just about that. I got the car as a company lease vehicle in the fall of 2013 and left my company 14 months later. I was able to buy the car from my employer. Of late, I've had a Lexus RX 350 and Lincoln MKX. In past years I've also owned Explorers and not too long ago a 300C (okay, not an SUV). None of these compare to my Durango. Hope this review helps you.

Best SUV I've ever owned
My Durango is the best SUV I've ever owned. I pull a 3500 lb. boat with the 6 cylinder engine and can't even tell it's back there, even in the hills. It is comfortable, quiet and the fuel economy is unbelievable, considering the size of the vehicle. 20-21 mpg around town and 27-28 on the highway. Even pulling the boat I get an impressive 15-16 mpg, far better than friends with other brands. I've owned this Durango for 1 year and have had 0 problems except for a minor recall which was a computer reprogram that took about 5 minutes to correct. My friends are so impressed with the Durango that three of them have traded in their SUVs for new Durangos or Gran Cherokees. The only negative is that I hear Dodge is discontinuing the Durango in 2016, and I have one question: What could Dodge possibly be thinking?

Extremely happy with purchase!
I own the 2014 Durango SXT AWD. Incredible vehicle! I bought this for many reasons: roominess, appearance (man, this thing looks cool), driving comfort, towing capacity, power, versatility, fuel economy, affordability, blue-tooth, and quiet ride. Best vehicle I've ever owned, period. Dodge has created a luxury-feel SUV but with an affordable price tag. Also looked at Ford Explorer, Honda Pilot, Toyota Highlander, and Chevy Traverse. After extensive online research, went to test drive the Durango and LOVED it immediately. Only problems: 1) radio malfunctioned and needed to be replaced, 2) transmission shifts rough between 1-3 gears after initial start up. Smooths out after warming up. I've learned not to push it too soon and to accelerate slow and easy to allow smoother shifting. Transmission does seem to "think" too much. I've installed running boards, mud flaps, Husky floor liners, and a bug guard. Now looks like a custom, sporty SUV instead of a base model. I love that I can use to transport our 3 dogs around, then flip the 3rd row up for more passengers. I can also haul large cargo by flipping down 2nd row and it acts like a truck bed. Best of all, the Durango rides smooth and quiet at cruising speeds. My wife loves it! Great sound system, too. Lastly, the rear racetrack tail light is super stylish and unique.

2020 Dodge Durango
"great build quality"
Just got a 2020 Durango SXT V6 RWD . Build quality initially is exceptional . Interior is great . Love the configurable dashboard where you can have a analog speedo or a digital speed . Also can transmission temp , oil temp , oil pressure and other parameters . Even the base radio sounds great with 6 Alpine speakers for the base radio . It is quiet and the V6 has more than enough guts to move this vehicle . If anyone says the V6 doesnt have enough power they are full of it . The ZF designed 8 speed auto shifts seamlessly to the point you can barely feel it . Very comfortable ride . It is a long car so you have to pay attention backing it up . Handles great for a bigger vehicle and the steering has 3 different selectable modes. It has little lights in all the cubby holes and even in the glovebox which is rare these days . Lighted cupholders in the front . The paint job is perfect and looks great in In-Violet . The thing left is the long term reliability, that remains to be seen . Fingers crossed !
