The V8 engines in the Durango get the headlines, but the reality is that the V6 is actually quite good. It can haul up to 6,400 pounds, and it offers smooth and refined performance, the 8-speed proving a good match overall despite the occasional hunt for the right gear. That said, the two V8s on offer are pretty cool. There's the 5.7-liter version, with 360 horsepower and up to 7,400 pounds of towing capacity. It sounds great, offers quick acceleration and plenty of passing power. Then there's the new-for-2018 Durango SRT, with 475 horsepower and up to 8,600 pounds of towing capability. It's even quicker, hitting 60 mph in just 4.4 seconds, and it sounds terrific while doing it. Best of all, the Durango -- even the sporty SRT model -- offers a comfortable ride and quiet interior when just cruising around, with plenty of space for its seven passengers.

DURANGO SRT Of course this is our favorite thing about the Durango, and why not? With 475 horsepower, 6-passenger seating, more than four tons of towing capacity, and 0-60 mph in about 4.4 seconds, the Durango SRT is the complete package. Uconnect 8.4 The Uconnect system in Dodge (and Chrysler and Jeep vehicles) is one of the best touch-screen infotainment systems available. The latest version revamps the interface for a cleaner appearance, ups the usability, and adds Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The 2018 Dodge Durango's interior feels like a higher quality place than many of its crossover-SUV competitors, especially in high-end Citadel models with their heated and ventilated front seats, and heated 2nd-row seating. Most models offer a choice between a bench or captain's chairs in the second row; the latter makes accessing the third row easier, and makes it easier to use a booster seat. Cargo space behind the third row is so-so, but the 3rd-row seats fold, and you can even fold down the front passenger seat for really long objects. Citadel and SRT models can be ordered with faux-suede headliners.

The Durango's exterior styling is exactly aggressive enough without going overboard, even in base models. The clean lines get dressed up with LED headlight accents, a big crosshair grille in varying trims -- chrome or body color -- and the rear end sports a tailgate-wide red LED "racetrack-taillight" design that's exceptionally distinctive at night. Chrome fans should look to the base SXT or the especially blingtastic Citadel; the monochrome look on the mid-level GT and R/T and super-quick SRT are more subtle alternatives. The SRT sports a unique hood and front end with extra vents to help cool the big V8.

The base model 2018 Dodge Durango SXT comes with seating for five passengers, the V6, and interestingly, a Sport mode for a better driving experience. It also comes with a 7.0-inch Uconnect touch-screen infotainment system that includes an AM/FM/CD radio, WMA/MP3 support, Bluetooth, Sirius satellite radio and auxiliary input jack. There are also a tilt/telescope steering wheel and 3-zone automatic climate control, and outside you get 18-inch aluminum-alloy wheels. Of course, if you work your way up the model line you get more standard equipment, such as a power liftgate and sunroof, navigation, Nappa leather seats, and more.

Choices facing 2018 Dodge Durango shoppers range from the number of seats (up to seven passengers with the 2nd-row bench and third row), to the engine (a V6 and two V8s) and which wheels to send power to. Beyond that there's the 8.4-inch Uconnect infotainment system with navigation, and an LCD multifunction display between the main gauges. Blacktop and Brass Monkey appearance packages add exterior upgrades, while a Technology Group adds active cruise control, collision warning with automatic braking, and other safety systems. For towing, get the 220-amp alternator, heavy-duty engine oil cooler, Class IV hitch receiver and load-leveling rear shocks.

The base 3.6-liter V6 is a surprisingly good choice for the 2018 Durango. With 295 horsepower it accelerates just fine, has decent passing power, and saves fuel compared to the V8 engines. Optional on R/T and Citadel models is the 5.7-liter V8, which offers up 360 horsepower and 7,400 pounds of towing capacity, along with a satisfying V8 roar. Of course, if you're looking for the ultimate Durango, there's the 6.4-liter V8 under the hood of the new Durango SRT. With 475 horsepower it leaves competitors in the dust. All engines come with an 8-speed automatic transmission, and the V8s deactivate four of their eight cylinders under light loads. Rear-wheel and all-wheel drive (RWD, AWD) are available, with AWD standard on the SRT. 3.6-liter V6 293 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm (single exhaust) 295 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm (dual exhaust) 260 lb-ft of torque @ 4,800 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/26 mpg (RWD), 18/25 mpg (AWD) 5.7-liter V8 360 horsepower @ 5,150 rpm 390 lb-ft of torque @ 4,250 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/22 mpg 6.4-liter V8 475 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 470 lb-ft of torque @ 4,300 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 13/19 mpg

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) on a rear-wheel-drive base-model 2018 Durango SXT is just under $ 32,000, which includes the $ 1,095 destination charge. Anchoring the top is the powerful Durango SRT, with a price of just under $ 65,000. In between are the GT, Citadel, and R/T models, varying between about $ 39,000 to about $ 47,400 to start. Options add up, but you can still get a reasonably priced V8-powered Durango for the low $ 50,000 range, which isn't bad. Skip the V8 premium and a V6 Durango is price competitive with the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer. Check out the Fair Purchase Price on to learn what buyers in your area are actually paying. The Durango will likely hold its value about as well as a Chevrolet Traverse, but likely fall short of the Honda Pilot and Ford Explorer.

Dodge Durango Overview and History

When Dodge reintroduced the Durango in 2011, it was unlike anything seen in the SUV segment before, providing its comfortable three-row seating, driving range, power, muscular design and cargo volume.
Dodge practically patented the muscle car. Little did they know they would become one of America's top Automobile manufacturers and that the Charger model, for example, particularly the 66-67 one, would trigger jaw dropping amazement at its sight. John Francis and Horace Elgin Dodge were making bikes in 1901 when they decided to move their company, the Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan.

Before Cadillac would outrun Dodge in engine development years later, the Brothers were supplying car parts for many producers. Their early involvement in the process of making cars lead them to starting their own business, entering the queue for a large order of recognition and notoriety. Setting the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company in 1914 brought them a step closer to the counter.

The first Dodge automobiles shared some of Ford Model T's features but outran the latter in terms of ignition and other improvements meant to ease driving. One of the major advantages Dodge offered was a smooth, electrical start rather than the sluggishly classic crank start. Built for the middle class, the cars quickly became a commercial success, mainly due the clever blend of reliable ruggedness, engine improvements and style elements.

By 1917, Dodge had produced enough cars to start thinking expanding in other car-manufacturing areas. Trucks seemed like something they could successfully take on and the Dodge truck division came to being. Dodge trucks were used by the US army during the First World War after which they kept being used as commercial vehicles.

The Dodge brothers sold their business to Dillon, Read & company for the astoundingly large sum of  $ 146 million, said to be the largest amount in history to have been paid at the time. Dillon helmed Dodge management only for 3 years, passing the new acquisition to the Chrysler Corporation  on July 31, 1928.

Due to Chrysler's financial conquests over some European automotive groups, such as the British Rootes group and the French Simca, Dodge is introduced to Europe in the 60's. Lightweight commercial vehicles are sold here under a different badge. The Dodge 50 series is fairly well received in the UK, becoming a favorite for military and utility operations.

1977 brought forth the collapse of Chrysler's European subsidiary and its adjacent Dodge branch altogether. The Dodge factory as well as some rights to use the Dodge name were purchased by Renault who resumed the production of Dodge's commercial vehicles. However, Renault only made use of the Dodge name till the 80's when it gave up control over the name rights. Only the factory was kept.

Dodge is currently part of the DaimlerChrysler group and has been lately been know for its trucks rather than retro-future stylized muscle cars as it used to be know for during the 60's and 70's. Much like any other American car builder, Dodge garnered huge amounts of success at the time with the launch of the Charger and Coronet models, to name only a few.

As far as the company's current status is concerned, trucks make the most sales, representing 78% of the division's venue. Still undergoing intensive promotion in Europe, Dodge have sought to reach  the same type of customer it did back in the 70's by launching a series of  mean-looking, rowdy  road-tamers such as the Nitro and Caliber.

2018 Dodge Durango Consumer Reviews

bordermatcher,
Best Vehicle We've Owned
We've had our 2018 Durango R/T for three years. Living in Colorado with two active kids, we needed a reliable vehicle, one with AWD for the winters, room in the back for sports gear, and one with a strong engine to take us through the mountains. We have not experienced lag in the engine even when we have 4 additional passengers. This Durango has ticked off the boxes for each. Outside of the needs listed above, we love the exterior styling of the R/T. It has that aggressive Dodge look to it. The infotainment system is the simplest to set up and use. Dodge provided buttons and knobs for temperature and radio controls, which we prefer. That way you do not have to go into a menu. The sounds of the V8 can be addictive. There has been a few times on the freeway I will press down on the accelerator to pass a car just to hear that Hemi.
cloodcraniac,
I am in love!
2018 Dodge Durango RT. Absolutely love this vehicle. I cannot say enough. I haven’t stopped smiling since the test drive. I highly recommend you test drive one. You will not be disappointed! No other SUV compares!
agreecost,
Underrated by far
I bought this new in 2018 I have the this suv in black GT. I have many extras .. leather, heated front and back seats, sun roof, roof rack , garage door and beets sound system.. I Looked at many SUV this past year from the Toyota Highlander to the Aradia , Ford Explorer.. this Dodge Durango is by far the best and funniest car to drive .. I really enjoy this SUV. Nice ride , good value as well for the money. My dodge has held up very well over the years. I absolutely love the look it’s one of the better looking NON soccer mom SUV on the market in my opinion. The beats sound system Is crazy, smooth ride nice get up and go. The navigation system works very well no issue and very responsive. If I was to get anything else it would be the Tellaride but I’m keeping this for a bit longer.
embargoplay,
Good Value
Nice sized vehicle and a relatively good value. Ride is a bit harsh as compared to other midsize SUV's. The Uconnect continues to have connection issues, that have plagued it since new; dealer can't find anything wrong and it's happened with 3 different iPhones. Good cargo area for this size vehicle. Third row seating is definitely not for adults, it's only good for kids and you need to be contortionist to get in and out of the 3rd row seating. Great storage space under the rear floor.
cookeroxidize,
Great truck, SUV and family sportster!
Purchased new 2018, SRT version. Great truck and fun to drive. My kids love the launch mode.
awedcuddly,
I love this truck.
I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone who is interested in purchasing this vehicle.
sconnynepalese,
Best SUV we have ever owned
The main reason for purchase was that it had outstanding air conditioning delivering cold air throughout the cab to the back cargo area and that is very important during summer in Texas. That is where our three dogs ride and we appreciate that they also have plenty of room back there. The vehicle is reliable and very comfortable especially on long trips. We have back issues so that matters a lot. Always starts right up and has lots of power. The interior lighting is excellent and we very much like the styling inside and out.
dimmerhamilton,
Best SUV for the money!
I have the v6, which pulls loads well. plenty of pick up and cargo room / passenger space. A lot of vehicle for the money! I see many bad reviews I don't know if they drive much or not this is one fine machine.
arguefoxpro,
Love it!
I previously owned a 2016 GMC Acadia and love this car so much more! The Acadia and the Durango offer about the same about of cargo space but the Durango feels more luxurious and drives a lot nicer. The gas mileage is average for a vehicle of this size. I bought the SXT AWD and it comes with plenty (sunroof, heated seats, & large touch screen). If I wasnt on a budget I would of got the Citadel. I am extremely happy with my upgrade and I am looking forward to purchasing more Durangos in the future.

"great build quality"
Just got a 2020 Durango SXT V6 RWD . Build quality initially is exceptional . Interior is great . Love the configurable dashboard where you can have a analog speedo or a digital speed . Also can transmission temp , oil temp , oil pressure and other parameters . Even the base radio sounds great with 6 Alpine speakers for the base radio . It is quiet and the V6 has more than enough guts to move this vehicle . If anyone says the V6 doesnt have enough power they are full of it . The ZF designed 8 speed auto shifts seamlessly to the point you can barely feel it . Very comfortable ride . It is a long car so you have to pay attention backing it up . Handles great for a bigger vehicle and the steering has 3 different selectable modes. It has little lights in all the cubby holes and even in the glovebox which is rare these days . Lighted cupholders in the front . The paint job is perfect and looks great in In-Violet . The thing left is the long term reliability, that remains to be seen . Fingers crossed !
