With its world-class performance, handsome styling and daily driver practicality, the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette is the best sports car deal on the planet.

With performance that rivals $ 200,000 exotics, the current-generation Chevrolet Corvette is -- at one-fourth to one-third the cost -- the buy of a lifetime for many sports car enthusiasts. In keeping with tradition, there are a variety of Corvettes offered, including the base removable-top coupe, a convertible and the ferocious Z06, a fixed-roof coupe that boasts a track-ready suspension and a 7.0-liter V8 that thumps out a tire-melting 505 horsepower. And the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette only gets better thanks to more power, additional refinement and more standard features.

The power part comes from a revised, 6.2-liter engine for the base Vettes. It cranks out 430 hp, a gain of 30 more horses than last year. There's also a new optional exhaust that raises horsepower by another 6. Other hardware changes include revised transmissions for quicker and easier shift quality and an improved steering rack for better feel. And in hopes of fending off criticism once and for all about the car's plasticky interior, Chevy has introduced a new (and pricey) interior package this year that places high-quality, two-tone leather upholstery on the dash, seats and doors.

If all the 2008 Corvette offered was acceleration, braking and handling equal to high-dollar exotics, it would still be the darling of car buffs everywhere. But a surprising level of utility comes along for the ride, too. The Corvette offers a user-friendly cockpit, a massive amount of luggage space and a ride quality that's comfortable enough for daily commuting and long freeway slogs.

Our quibbles with the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette are few. Although the base interior is better than years past, it's still somewhat plain and has too much plastic trim for a car in this price range. Nor can the Corvette match the nimble handling of European models like the BMW M coupe and roadster. But for the majority of shoppers in this segment, those items will likely be minor issues. For the money, it doesn't get any better than the Corvette.

Officially, the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette is shown as coming in two body styles: a coupe and a convertible. But in reality, there are three: the removable-top coupe, fixed-roof coupe and convertible. The standard Corvette coupe features a removable roof panel, whereas the Corvette Z06 coupe's roof looks the same, but is fixed in place for improved rigidity. The convertible should appeal to true roadster enthusiasts and, like Corvette roadsters before it, features a hideaway top.

Standard on the coupe and drop top are xenon headlamps, keyless entry and startup, full power accessories, satellite radio, a CD player and audio input jack, OnStar telematics, auto-dimming mirrors all around, leather seating, a six-way power driver seat and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Z06 includes most of the standard Corvette coupe's features but gains a more powerful V8, a lighter frame, larger wheels and tires, a more stiffly tuned suspension, upgraded brakes and special sport seats. The 427 Limited Edition Z06 -- an allusion to the 427-cubic-inch power plant this car shares with the "base" Z06 -- adds special paint and graphics and comes standard with an exclusive titanium-hued leather interior.

Option highlights (many of which are grouped in packages) for the standard coupe and convertible include a custom two-tone leather interior (with leather covering the dash top, console top and armrests), a navigation system, a transparent roof panel for the coupe, a head-up display, driver-seat memory and a seven-speaker Bose audio system. There are also suspension options: the Magnetic Ride Control suspension (which automatically firms up and softens the suspension according to how the car is being driven) and the Z51 performance handling package (which adds extra cooling, stiffer suspension calibrations, bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors, specific tires and shorter gearing for the six-speed manual). Options for the Z06 are similar minus the transparent roof panel and suspension options.

Both the base coupe and convertible Corvettes feature a 6.2-liter V8 that makes an impressive 430 hp and 424 pound-feet of torque. An optional performance exhaust adds another 6 hp. The Z06 boasts an exotic-class 505 hp and 470 lb-ft from its 7.0-liter V8. All Corvettes have a six-speed manual gearbox as standard, while a six-speed paddle-shift automatic is a no-cost option for the base coupe and convertible. The manual gearbox features new linkage for more positive action while the automatic has been recalibrated to furnish quicker response to the paddle shifters.

Regardless of which Corvette you choose, you'll get stunning performance. We spurred the base Corvette coupe from zero to 60 mph in just 4.5 seconds en route to a blistering 12.8-second quarter-mile at 114.8 mph, and Chevrolet claims that it won't stop until it hits 190 mph. Fuel economy is relatively impressive too, with 2008 EPA estimates of 16 mpg city/26 mpg highway for a manual-transmission Corvette. The Z06 is even quicker -- and at 15 mpg city/24 highway, there's only a slight penalty at the pump.

Antilock disc brakes are standard, as is a superb stability control system known as Active Handling. The latter provides noninvasive assistance and allows the expert driver a performance driving mode that gives more leeway while still maintaining a safety net. Side-impact airbags are optional, but head curtain airbags are not available.

A tidal wave of endless power from either snarling V8 along with tight handling results in a sports car that never ceases to put a smile on your face. Any of the three suspension packages will deliver a compliant ride along with white-knuckled handling capabilities, while this year's improved steering provides greater road feel. In short, the 2008 Chevrolet Corvette can serve equally well as a comfortable touring car or world-class performance machine, while the Z06 version is simply a monster on the street that is still docile enough to serve as one's daily driver.

Ever since the debut of the previous-generation Corvette, Chevrolet has made big strides in terms of interior fit and finish, which are now very good, though perhaps still one step behind class leaders. Large gauges, simple controls (even on the optional navigation system), usable cupholders and massive cargo capacity (22 cubic feet in coupes and 11 cubes in the convertible) make the Vette a sports car that's easy to live with on a day-to-day basis.

The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 is a well-refined car of extraordinary capabilities that can be comfortably driven every day, but its stunning performance is best experienced on a track. It can rocket from zero to 60 mph in 3.7 seconds, in first gear -- which is certainly not recommended on public roads. With a professional driver it is capable of cornering at over 1.0-g lateral acceleration (or cornering force) and stopping from 60 mph in just slightly over 110 feet. Its top speed (on a speed-unlimited section of German Autobahn) has been measured at 198 mph. Its firm yet surprisingly supple suspension rolls on 275/35ZR18 front tires on 18 x 9.5-inch aluminum wheels and 325/30ZR19 rear tires on 19 x 12-inchers -- the largest wheel and tire combination ever on a Corvette. Its four-wheel disc brakes are huge 14-inch vented, cross-drilled rotors with red-painted six-piston calipers with six individual brake pads in front, and 13.4-inch vented, cross-drilled rotors with four-piston calipers with four individual pads in the rear. And both its steering and shifting feel and precision are much improved for 2008.

Carbon Fiber Fenders and Aluminum StructureLightness is critical for a sports car, and Chevy's Z06 benefits from numerous weight-reduction measures to enhance its performance. Two major technological features that contribute to this light weight are carbon-fiber fenders and one-piece hydroformed aluminum perimeter frame rails with cast aluminum suspension nodes, which replace welded steel components on other Corvettes.7.0-liter LS7 V8It cranks out a muscular yet civilized 505 horsepower and 470 pound-feet of tire-shredding torque. Its reciprocating components use racing-derived lightweight technology to boost both power and rpm capability, and its "dry-sump" oiling system keeps it fully lubricated during high cornering loads.

For all its racer-like performance, the Z06 is designed to serve as a comfortable daily driver. As in all 2008 Corvettes, there's a new wrapped console trim plate with bright surrounds for the shifter and cupholder. The instrument panel and doors are trimmed in faux padded leather, and high-quality materials, functionality and craftsmanship are apparent throughout. There's a Z06 logo on the 7000-rpm-redline tachometer and the oil pressure gauge reflects the dry-sump oiling system's higher pressures. The two-tone leather seats have contrasting stitching and embroidered Z06 logos.

The Z06's aerodynamic shape draws from Corvette racing experience, where high-speed stability and cornering are paramount. The low splitter under the wide-mouth grille provides stabilizing front downforce, while the elevated rear spoiler (like a racer's rear wing) holds the rear end tight to the pavement. Other exterior features that set the Z06 apart from standard Corvettes include a functional cool-air scoop ahead of the hood, large air extractors behind the front wheels, wide flared fenders over the huge 19-inch rear tires and rear brake cooling scoops.

All 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06s boast standard features that were previously optional, including high-intensity discharge headlamps, fog lamps, leather seating, dual-zone air conditioning with cabin air filtration and a head-up display (HUD) with track mode and g-meter. Also standard are oil, transmission and rear-axle coolers, power heated outside mirrors, a six-way power driver's seat, GM OnStar with available Turn-By-Turn Navigation, AM/FM audio with CD player and audio input jack, XM Satellite Radio and a new keyless access fob with integrated key. Standard safety features include four-channel ABS brakes, "active handling" stability control with a "competitive" driving mode and advanced front airbags.

Major options include Bose premium audio with in-dash six-CD changer, Z06-specific chrome or polished gray wheels, a power telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, side-impact airbags, GPS navigation and universal home remote. All 2008 Corvettes offer a new custom two-tone leather-wrapped interior package, a Preferred Equipment Group combines all of the above and Personal Audio Link is available as a dealer-installed option with navigation.

The Z06's 7.0-liter V-8 reintroduces 427 cubic-inches of displacement to the Corvette, but it's the latest high-performance iteration of Chevy's legendary "small block," not a much larger, heavier "big-block" as in early Corvettes. Race engine-like details include dry-sump lubrication, titanium connecting rods, forged steel crankshaft and main bearing caps, 11.0:1 compression ratio and CNC-ported aluminum cylinder heads with titanium intake and sodium-filled exhaust valves. A single-mass flywheel and a lightweight, high-capacity clutch send torque to the six-speed manual rear-mounted transaxle, which transmits it to the wheels through a limited-slip differential with enlarged ring-and-pinion gears.7.0-liter V8505 horsepower @ 6300 rpm470 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/24

The 2008 Chevrolet Corvette Z06 carries a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just over $ 72,000 . Its closest competitor is Dodge's Viper, which offers 95 more horsepower from its massive V10 engine but is 300 pounds heavier, delivers two mpg worse fuel economy and transacts nearly $ 15,000 higher. Porsche's base 911 Carrera retails for about the same as the Z06, weighs slightly less and gets two-to-three mpg better fuel economy, but, with 180 less horsepower from its horizontally-opposed six-cylinder engine, it delivers nowhere near the Z06's stunning performance. Audi's new R8 brings 420 V8 horsepower and sensational mid-engine handling dynamics but sells for some $ 9,000 over its $ 115,600 MSRP. The Z06 should return an excellent residual value after five years, higher than the Carrera, Viper and R8. Be sure to check prices to see what people are actually paying in your area.

Chevrolet Corvette Overview and History

Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

2dr Coupe (6.2L 8cyl 6M)
Well Pleased
I purchased my 2008 Base model, 3LT, Z51, NPP 3 years ago with 29,000mi. on the clock. I have been very pleased with it. I have done only oil changes; everything has been completely reliable. The car is easy to learn, very driver friendly. My partner (girlfriend) enjoys it very much (definitely a plus). I have put 14,000mi. on it since getting it and have absolutely no complaints. Some have commented that the interior is a little drab but I am very satisfied with it. The engine is "leggy" with good torque and hp throughout a broad rpm range, I don't have to be constantly changing gears although I like the engine sound with the NPP defeated so I find myself shifting almost unnecessarily just hear the exhaust note. I have the NPP bypass remote (came with the car) and that enhances the driving a great deal as I can hear the exhaust when I want and I can return it to normal mode when I want less sound so I can listen to music (I really like this feature). The roof panel is fairly easy to remove/replace with no particular awkwardness although care must be used when doing so, and it stows in the trunk area in the retaining brackets, only it does take up a lot of the available trunk area, but if I'm traveling with luggage I'm not going to be doing it with the roof panel off as I would likely get tired of that after couple hours. I scored the performance high but I'm sure I haven't tested the limits of the car (I'm a senior citizen, and I think it's a good idea for me to not push the car beyond my limits with the possible consequences of breakage, collision and higher insurance premiums; the car does everything I want it to. The leather on the seats is good quality and the fit/finish of the car overall is very good. I drive it year round here in the mountains of western NC, USA, and I have a set of summer tires on aftermarket wheels and change over to the all-season tires on the factory wheels when winter comes. This is an extra expense but I really don't like the idea of the car sitting in the garage thru the winter and my not being able to enjoy it, but to each his own. I chose to go this route with the tires since these cars come with summer tires and it's not recommended they be used below 50 degrees F, and since the all-season tires are twice the price of summer tires I think I'm saving money in the long run, and again, I get to enjoy the car year-round. A lot of people (who are true car people) do look at the car with interest/admiration and I have to admit that's a pretty cool feeling, although that's not the reason I bought it. I bought it to drive and enjoy the technology/performance/style, and it's a car I could afford where I could get that. Overall, the fuel economy is good, surprising that 430hp could still result in such figures (average 23mpg). If I had $ 110k to spend, I'd probably get a 2016 ZO6. I toured the Bowling Green Assy. plant a couple years ago and was impressed with the dedication that goes into these cars. One negative note is the fact that the car has a problematic keyless entry/start system. At least 25% of the time the car can't "find" the FOB and I have to try several times to enter the car or start it. I'm not sure what the problem is since it's intermittent, and intermittent problems are difficult to correct. Update 7/23/18: The problematic keyless entry system was the result of using weak fob batteries. I made the mistake of buying a handful of the CR3032's when I got the car, thinking the fob battery was weak. I was correct - the battery was weak. The mistake I made was buying more batteries than I needed and buying batteries that apparently had been on the shelf for a long time so the result was I replaced the weak fob battery with another weak fob battery. Over the course of a couple years I dealt with fob problems unknowingly using weak batteries one after another. I had issues with the car finding the fob, starting problems, etc., all because I didn't have a fresh fob battery. I finally replaced the battery with a known fresh one (bought it at a store I know sells alot of them - Walmart) and all symptoms went away. I have had no problems with the fob features, anything related to the fob, engine starting, door opening, etc. I'm very pleased I discovered this. From now on, I will buy a battery only when I need one and will buy only one at at time since apparently these batteries do weaken on the shelf. Duracelll advertises a 10-year shelf life but I'm not even going to trust that. Actually, I've decided the next time I need a fob battery I will use my multimeter to make sure the fob battery has at least 3.1 volts. If you think about it, a car battery, when it drops to 12 volts, is essentially dead. Many car batteries that reach 11.9 volts will not start a car without difficulty, and since I've discovered the fob needs at least 3.0 volts I'm going to make sure my new fob battery is fresh and strong by testing with my multimeter. I now have 53,000 miles on the car.

Best car I've owned in 50 years
My 2008 Z06 replaced a 2005 Z51 Corvette. Beside providing world-class performance, in 26,000 miles this car hasn't had a single issue other than changing tires and oil. It's the best car I've ever owned. It has no rattles, no glitches, and at a steady 80 mph, it gets 32 mpg. Highly recommended.

Always an eye-catcher
My wife and I have absolutely loved this car from the day we purchased it. The comfort, performance and reliability can't be beat, especially for the price. You could pay twice as much and still not get a car of this quality. We drove it on a 9,000 mile road trip around the United States in the fall of 2008 and averaged 27 mpg. The navigation was a huge aid. Don't believe the car magazine criticisms of the seats, but ask any C6 owner or try them yourself to realize how comfortable and supportive they are. The 430 horsepower is all you could desire and more. The Corsa Sport exhaust we installed added 12 additional horses and 13 lbs of torque and an aggressive throaty sound on acceleration and quiet cruising. While we may purchase a new one some day, we will have difficulty parting with this C6, the lines of which we love. Receives compliments every where we go. May never part with it.

Corvette C5 to C6 Z06
After 4 years of Corvette C5 coupe ownership I purchased a new 2008 Machine Silver Z06 based on pricing, performance and looks. Having owned the car less than two weeks I can say this is absolutely the best automobile I have owned. The performance and acceleration is superb. The looks are unmatched and pricing for this American supercar is right on. The Z06 is not an economy car but highway mileage in the mid 20's is not disappointing.

"Love This Car"
It is soon to be 14 years old and I haven't had one mechanecal issue out of it. I take great pride in keeping it clean and waxed. People tell me it looks new! The upgraded interior is much better than before and the styling is the best yet (prior to the new C7's). Amazing resale value for a car this old.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
