The 2008 Cadillac XLR boasts an artistic, eye-catching design that still stands out in a crowd. Its lackluster performance and interior craftsmanship, however, put it at a disadvantage in the very competitive (and expensive) luxury roadster segment.

In a rather nifty commercial featuring music by Iggy Pop and the Teddy Bears, the 2008 Cadillac XLR roadster is presented as the latest in a long line of great Caddy coupes and convertibles. Of course, it's the first model to represent both categories thanks to its power-folding hardtop. But while the commercial proclaims "I'm a punk rocker, yes I am," the XLR's grand, eye-catching design practically screams "I'm a Cadillac" with thoroughly modern lines that pay homage to -- rather than copy -- all those that wore the Caddy crest in the past.

For better or worse, driving the XLR is more indicative of those past Cadillacs than it is of the Corvette it's based on. The 320-horsepower V8 is plenty powerful and the steering is precise, but even with its adjustable suspension, the XLR is more suitable for straight-line highway cruising than back-road athleticism. Those expecting a Vette in evening wear will be disappointed.

So, too, will those anticipating this Cadillac to match the interior quality and driving experience of its fellow $ 80,000 convertibles. Subsequently, unless the XLR's handsome looks and all-American pedigree strike a strong chord with you, we suggest focusing on the rather impressive list of competitors that includes the BMW 650i, Jaguar XK, Mercedes-Benz SL550 and Porsche 911 Cabriolet. The 2008 XLR may be the latest in a long line of fine Cadillacs, but in this price bracket, that's not necessarily enough.

The 2008 Cadillac XLR is a luxury roadster that features a retractable hardtop. It is offered in base, Platinum Edition and Alpine White Edition trim levels. The base XLR comes with most of the luxury features you'd ever want, including 18-inch alloy wheels with run-flat tires, adaptive xenon HID headlights, eight-way power and heated leather seats, a heated steering wheel, Bose audio (with satellite radio and a CD changer), OnStar, a navigation system, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition, adaptive cruise control and a head-up display.

The XLR Platinum Edition adds unique 15-spoke wheels, different wood and metallic cabin accents, special door sill plates, exclusive color choices and "Platinum" exterior badging. The Alpine White Edition isn't quite as grand (nor costly) as the Platinum, but comes attractively painted in its namesake and also features chrome wheels and grille. Chrome wheels are also available separately.

A muscular yet refined 4.6-liter V8 powers the XLR. A six-speed automatic (that allows manual-style shifting) sends the V8's 320 hp and 310 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels. The XLR is a spirited performer, as the 0-60-mph dash takes less than 6 seconds, while high-speed running on the highway is hushed and effortless. Full-throttle shifts result in little hesitation, and the sound of the engine at full song is as good as or better than any V8 in its class. Braking performance is equally impressive, with a stop from 60 mph taking just 118 feet, and with no fade evident after successive panic stops.

Antilock disc brakes, run-flat tires and stability control are all standard, as are side airbags that offer head as well as thorax protection. Rear parking sensors are also included.

As fast as the 2008 Cadillac XLR is when pushed, those expecting a Corvette in a three-piece suit will be disappointed. Acceleration is certainly quick, but the XLR's soft suspension tuning results in noticeable body roll during hard cornering and plenty of nosedive under heavy braking. The Magnetic Ride Control shocks are standard equipment, but even with their split-second adjustability, the XLR still feels less willing to tackle the turns than the more athletic Mercedes SL. On less serpentine roads, the XLR hits its stride, delivering an undisturbed ride with effortless, arrow-straight tracking afforded by the precise steering. At highway speeds, wind buffeting is somewhat intrusive with the top down, but not so much that it detracts from the XLR's otherwise enjoyable freeway ride.

While packed to the gills with high-tech luxury features, the 2008 Cadillac XLR fails to match the interior quality of similarly priced competitors that wear the badges of BMW, Jaguar, Mercedes-Benz and Porsche. Its soothing blend of soft leather, eucalyptus wood trim and aluminum trim are certainly inviting, but the plastics quality is below average for this lofty class and its design is a little too reminiscent of the outgoing first-generation CTS.

Still, this is a hardtop convertible, and as such, the XLR won't disappoint customers looking for a two-seater that can provide both a suntan and a quiet top-up highway ride. The trunk boasts a respectable 11.6 cubic feet of space when the top is up. Top down, however, that number drops to a more confining 4.4 cubic feet.

Effortless is the best way to describe the 2008 Cadillac XLR-V, closely followed by delightful. Acceleration is awesome, yet smooth and controlled. Because the exhaust system changes during "aggressive" driving, you hear the subdued gurgle periodically - enough to remind you what's lurking within, but never annoying. Although you can sense the suspension tautness at all times, the ride is surprisingly satisfying - not tame or light, but far short of punishing. Steering control is close to unbeatable, yielding a confident and positive feel, along with quick and certain responses. Through close, quick curves, the XLR-V behaves with nearly-level cornering and predictable reactions.

Sport/Manual-mode Transmission OperationThere are three operating modes for the automatic transmission: Full automatic for most driving, performance-oriented automatic for demanding driving or manually selecting the gears by tapping the shift lever. Each mode delivers great response from the combination of the Northstar engine and the new six-speed transmission.Supercharged EngineEven those who stick to responsible road speeds and legal limits can appreciate the XLR-V's silken, nearly sensuous power delivery. Of course, they might not wish to pay the extra price for that potential, either at the dealership or, repeatedly, the gas pump.

Although the "regular" 2008 Cadillac XLR is impressively detailed within the cockpit, the XLR-V reaches a further step ahead in luxury with its handcrafted interior. Ebony-hued Zingana wood adorns the cockpit, which is cozy but sufficiently spacious for two, and allows easy entry. French-stitched leather seats with perforated suede seating surfaces are heated and cooled, and keep you in place without the need for excessive side bolstering. Sensibly-designed instruments are easy to read at a glance, but interior storage is scant and the retracted hardtop takes up plenty of trunk space.

Like the standard 2008 Cadillac XLR, the XLR-V has a power retractable hardtop that goes through an intriguing process to move up or down. There's no garish bulge on the hood, but there is a dome to make room for the engine's supercharger. Twin polished wire-mesh grilles lead the way, while 10-spoke silver-finished wheels hold 19-inch tires. V-series badging and "Supercharged" script also set the XLR-V apart from its basic XLR companion. Cadillac's Adaptive Forward Lighting system responds to the steering wheel, shifting the headlamps up to 15 degrees outboard and five degrees inboard to improve night visibility.

Just about everything a luxury-performance fan could savor is included in the 2008 Cadillac XLR-V's hefty price, though none of the features are unique or particularly dramatic. The sizable list of standard equipment includes rear parking assist sensors, four-setting StabiliTrak stability control, GM's OnStar system with a hands-free phone, a heated leather and wood tilt/telescoping steering wheel, XM Satellite Radio and memory for the driver's seat, steering wheel, mirrors and radio. The standard navigation system, which accepts voice commands, has a colorful, easy-to-read video screen. Magnetic Ride Control is specially calibrated for the XLR-V, with "track" and "touring" modes, and the engine starts by pushing a button. Every Northstar V8 is hot-tested at the factory.

Except for body-color and interior choices, there are no options available for the XLR-V.

While the regular 2008 Cadillac XLR makes do with a "mere" 320 horsepower, the super-hot XLR-V holds a supercharged 4.4-liter V8 with a whopping 443 horsepower. Cadillac claims that 90 percent of the peak torque is available from 2200 to 6200 rpm. With its two overdrive ratios and wide gear-ratio spread, the new Hydra-matic 6L80 rear-mounted six-speed automatic transmission is said to be nearly equivalent to a seven-speed. The manual-shift mode uses buttons on the console-mounted shift lever, but moving the lever to the side engages the Sport automatic mode.4.4-liter V8 Supercharged443 horsepower @ 6400 rpm414 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3900 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/21

The 2008 Cadillac XLR-V's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) is a nice, neat $ 100,000 (including gas-guzzler tax). A comparably-equipped Jaguar XKR costs about the same, while the Mercedes-Benz SL600 runs an additional $ 35,000. Though a limited production run will probably keep pricing firm, there may be some wiggle room for negotiation. Before you set out to purchase your XLR-V, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see the typical transaction price being paid in your area. Like the basic XLR, the limited-release XLR-V is expected to hold good resale values.

Cadillac XLR Overview and History

The Cadillac XLR returns in 2008 with enhanced technology and an improved exterior design, including a new front fascia, new rear fascia and new side fender vents.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

2008 Cadillac XLR Consumer Reviews

All smiles
I love my XLR-V and it makes me happy to get behind the wheel. It has had its share of problems including a leaky radiator and a bad supercharger air pump that started making groaning noises. It is definitely high maintenance including light bulb replacement that took the dealership one hour to get to it to replace. Also, one time the top stopped half way and we had to use the key in the bumper to get it closed manually. It never happened again so the car has its own personality. This car is red and draws a crowd wherever I go! Not even my 95 Jaguar XJS, which I traded in, drew this much attention from young and old alike. I just hope it is lower maintenance than the Jaguar!

Great Ride
No doubt, this is a fun car to drive. It's loaded with almost all features you may want. This car is not a Corvette and it's probably not for Corvette lovers. It's sophisticated, quiet with a gentle ride. The base powertrain offer enough power for most drivers.

Cadillac XLR
After Extensive Searches, and Reading Many Reviews, all I can say is: BUYERS BE AWARE!! What the Dealerships, and Salespersons won't tell you is that there are NO Replacement Body, Bumpers, Light Assemblies, or Trim Parts available anywhere, USA or Abroad, not even After Market for this Short Manufacturing Run Car (2004 through 2009) making Insurance Extremely Expensive if you can find someone to Insure it. Great Performance Car, Handles Great, Comfortable to ride in, but Poor Mileage. Might be a Good Car for someone who collects cars, and has plenty of Mad Money to play with. Just don't have an Accident!!

2006 Cadillac XLR
"A keeper future classic!"
The XLR was developed with quality in mind. A robust enhanced engine with a forged crank, steel reinforced casing, stronger piston pins, stronger studs, VVT, and more. This car had then some items that were offered on the C6 Corvette and some features that were not offered on the C6. It was advanced using magnetic ride suspension, thicker panels, better paint and a beautiful interior. Light weight materials with longevity in mind.

"Super fun car, still beautiful after 10 years"
Ive owned this car since it was 2 years old. I have driven this thing everywhere. At 85 it pulls less than 2000 RPM so it gets around 25 MPG on the highway (if you can keep your foot from pushing the skinny pedal too much!). Hands down a great car and I have not had a single problem.

"2006 XLR V"
Before purchasing the XLR V, only 2,188 made, I test drove the base model as well. My only comment on the V model is that it's an upgraded base model on steroids. Love the additional supercharged power, acceleration and the sound of the engine when the pedal is put to the metal. I only participate in car shows and only average 1,200 miles yearly. Haven't had any mechanical issues since my initial purchase in Nov 2014. Counting my lucky stars when I hit the starter button. Buy it, if you want daily attention. I'm in the 4th quarter of my life and the XLR V will take me to my end game with a smile on my face. Previous Vette and Porche owner and they don't even come close. Since the car is out of production as of 2009, certain spare parts are impossible to find. Example, head and tail lights. Don't have an accident.
