Thanks to its edgier styling, more powerful V6 engine and high-tech safety options, the 2008 Cadillac STS is now an even stronger player in an arena filled with talent. The Caddy's competitive pricing makes the deal even sweeter: a must on any consumer's short list.

"Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!" is the familiar whining call of poor middle child Jan Brady, constantly overlooked in favor of her popular older sister Marcia and cute-as-a-button younger sister Cindy. Life just wasn't fair for Jan, and it hasn't been much rosier for Cadillac's middle-child sedan either. The 2008 Cadillac STS slots in between the inexplicably top-selling DTS land yacht sedan and the sporty midsize CTS that has received tons of attention since its debut. And with that car receiving a complete overhaul this year that will surely raise its popularity even more, you can almost hear the STS growl, "CTS, CTS, CTS!"

To keep pace with its more attention-grabbing sibling (as well as other larger luxury sport sedans), the 2008 Cadillac STS has been revised inside and out. It's sort of like Jan ditching her dorky glasses. The wide, two-level egg-crate grille is particularly striking, and the improved cabin trim is bound to get the attention of full-size luxury car shoppers. Most significant is a new base engine, a 3.6-liter V6 engine that increases power by 47 horses and 20 pound-feet of torque compared to last year's six-cylinder. This power plant, now featuring direct fuel injection, not only puts more guts to the pavement, it's also more fuel-efficient and has reduced emissions. It's hard to argue with that formula, and considering that the STS V6 is basically as quick as the unchanged STS V8, we'd have no problem recommending saving a few bucks by going with the base engine.

Technology is now the name of the game when competing against big guns like the Audi A6, BMW 5 Series, Infiniti M35/45 and Mercedes-Benz E-Class, and the 2008 STS adds several high-tech optional features to its repertoire to keep up with the Joneses. The Lane Departure Warning System works like other brands' similar technologies, utilizing cameras in the rearview mirrors to read road lines and then alert the driver if he starts to stray with visual and audible signals. A Side Blind Zone Alert System scans for vehicles in the driver's blind spot and flashes an amber light in the rearview mirrors. Some drivers may find these "nanny technologies" irritating, but with so many in-car driver distractions nowadays, it's hard to deny their usefulness.

We've always liked the current STS, and the revised 2008 edition makes it even more endearing. The powerful new V6 almost makes the V8 irrelevant and boasts more power than the engines in the BMW 528i and 535i, as well as the Benz E350. Meanwhile, the STS' ride and handling continues to impress with moves that almost make you forget you're driving a sedan that's 6 inches longer and 200 pounds heavier than an E350. Having a price that undercuts the competition by thousands doesn't hurt either, even if a side effect is a few low-grade interior plastics. The 2008 Cadillac STS may never meet the DTS' sales figures or the CTS' attention, but at least it's got more going for it than Jan Brady.

The 2008 Cadillac STS is a large luxury sport sedan available in V6 and V8 models. Both versions feature 17-inch wheels, leather seating, wood and alloy-look interior trim, eight-way power front seats, dual-zone automatic climate control, remote keyless entry and vehicle start, satellite radio, an eight-speaker Bose sound system and OnStar. The V8 version adds a CD changer, memory seating presets, heated seats (front and rear), a heated steering wheel and rain-sensing wipers. Many of the V8's features can be added to the V6 model via a series of packages.

Other features available on both models (in packages or as à la carte items) include a sunroof, xenon headlamps with washers, adaptive cruise control, a lane departure warning system, a blind spot warning system, a head-up display, and heated and ventilated front seats. The navigation system is bundled with a Bose surround-sound audio system. There is also the Performance Handling Package, which adds better wheels, tires and brakes. An adaptive suspension system (Magnetic Ride Control) is also available, as are larger 18-inch wheels.

The standard engine on the 2008 Cadillac STS is a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 302 horsepower and 272 lb-ft of torque. Despite a significant increase in horsepower for 2008, fuel efficiency has improved and tailpipe emissions have been reduced. The optional engine choice is a 4.6-liter V8 making 320 hp and 315 lb-ft of torque. Both engines come only with a six-speed automatic transmission, and both can be ordered in rear-wheel-drive or all-wheel-drive guise. In performance testing, the STS V8 reached 60 mph in 6.3 seconds. Considering that the new V6 accelerates with similar gusto and turns in better fuel mileage, it's hard to justify the V8's added price and weight.

Antilock disc brakes, stability control and a full complement of airbags are standard on every Cadillac STS. The airbags include front-seat side and full-length side curtains. For 2008, there are a variety of advanced technologies designed to prevent accidents, including lane departure warning, a blind zone alert system and active steering. The latter is available only on all-wheel-drive V8 models, and is notable for turning the front wheels into a skid when rear wheels lose traction. In Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal-offset crash testing, the STS scored a rating of "Good," the highest possible. It scored a second-best rating of "Acceptable" for side-impact protection.

Although large in size, the 2008 Cadillac STS sedan feels three-fourths its size when driven with enthusiasm, yet it rides like a supple luxury car when you're gobbling up the miles on the highway. Cadillac offers an optional Magnetic Ride suspension that includes Touring and Sport modes. In Touring mode the Cadillac STS provides a cushy ride and composed handling, although the car will still dive into the turns with unwavering composure and never feels as if it's sprung too softly. In the Performance setting, the handling is a little sharper and the ride a bit stiffer, but the STS handles so well in Touring that we question the necessity of the two settings. Braking is strong as well, with progressive pedal action and an impressively short 120-foot stopping distance from 60 mph. The torquey new V6 is much better than the engine it replaces. With its V8-matching acceleration and higher fuel economy, the base-model STS would now be our pick over the pricier V8 version.

Cadillac snazzed up the STS interior significantly for 2008 with higher-quality wood and the addition of tasteful alloy trim. A sporty new steering wheel looks and feels better, while more wheel-mounted controls have been added. The good fit and finish remains and luxury buyers should be pleased with this Cadillac's generally high-class ambience. There are some demerits, though, mostly having to do with some low-grade plastic trim pieces that put the STS at a disadvantage against the top European and Japanese luxury sedans. Controls are straightforward and easy to use, with the exception of the confounding memory-setting procedure for the driver seat, mirrors, radio and climate controls. Unlike traditional systems, which place buttons on the door or driver seat, you must dive deep into the navigation touchscreen to set memory functions. It's frustrating and unnecessarily complicated, but at least it's something done only occasionally.

The STS-V's sport-tuned suspension is an impressive piece of engineering, holding the car tightly in the sharpest curves while delivering excellent feedback to the driver through the nicely-weighted steering and responsive brakes. There's no shortage of power from the supercharged V8 engine, which propels the 4,300-pound STS-V like a rock leaving a slingshot. While it isn't as fluid through a canyon run as some other factory-tuned sedans, the STS-V's sport-tuned suspension delivers impressive cornering limits. To ensure the STS-V's abundant power doesn't overwhelm the driving experience, Cadillac has created a unique four-mode version of its StabiliTrak stability control system, with settings for comfort, sport and competitive driving styles. The system seems to work best in the sport mode, delivering a balanced combination of ride comfort and handling.

Head-up DisplayThe Head-up Display works by projecting a digital readout onto the lower portion of the windshield. Without ever removing your eyes from the road, you can view pertinent information about speed, audio and cruise control settings.Adaptive Remote StartCadillac's remote start not only allows the car to be started from as far away as 200 feet, but it can also activate a number of preset commands, including operations for heating, air conditioning and defrost.

The 2008 Cadillac STS-V's cabin may be the most handsome interior ever produced by Cadillac. Supple leather covers the seats, steering wheel, door panels and dashboard. The clean simplicity of the STS-V's center console is highlighted by a large touch-screen display for the audio and navigation systems, while a separate panel for the heating and ventilation controls resides beneath. The stalk-mounted cruise control switch struck us as outdated; we prefer this function to be placed on the steering wheel, where it's more easily operated. As for Cadillac's sport seats, we can confirm the suede inserts help keep occupants in place, but a bit more side bolstering would accomplish the same goal while providing much-needed lateral support.

The same stylistic gene pool that spawned the CTS sedan and XLR roadster also gives birth to the 2008 Cadillac STS-V. The car's angular lines and upright profile distance it from the rounded contours found on most of its competitors and create a bold look that is uniquely American. Cadillac's V-treatment takes this visual statement one step further, applying stainless-steel mesh to the grille and lower air intake and lowering the front and rear fascias. To make space for the engine's supercharger, Cadillac sculpted a subtle bulge in the center of the STS-V's hood, giving it a menacing stance slightly reminiscent of a 1960s-era muscle car. Keeping the STS-V firmly planted on the road are 18-inch wheels up front, with 19-inch wheels in the rear.

Standard equipment for the STS-V includes Brembo four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), StabiliTrak stability control, a limited-slip rear differential and a six-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode. Inside, the STS-V features front and rear side-curtain airbags, Side Blind Zone Alert, Lane Departure Warning, Bose 5.1 Studio Surround Sound audio with MP3-capable six-disc CD changer, GPS navigation, OnStar, cruise control, Head-up Display, dual-zone automatic climate control, eight-way power front seats, heated front and rear seats, remote start, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, High-Intensity Discharge automatic headlamps with washers, power sunroof, a heated windshield washer system and Ultrasonic Rear Parking Assist.

The STS-V's option list is a short one. You can add cross-drilled brake rotors for enhanced fade resistance and equip the engine with a block heater. You can also order your STS-V without the power sunroof.

The 2008 Cadillac STS-V employs a variation of Cadillac's all-aluminum Northstar V8 engine. The 32-valve, 4.4-liter powerplant features dual overhead camshafts and variable valve timing (VVT) for improved efficiency. Cadillac engineers then added a supercharger that forces air into the engine's combustion chambers, thus increasing horsepower and torque. The added power can mean added stress to the engine, so internal components such as the pistons, connecting rods, cylinder heads and camshaft have all been strengthened accordingly.4.4-liter V8 Supercharged469 horsepower @ 6400 rpm439 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3900 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 13/19

The 2008 Cadillac STS-V has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at just over $ 79,000, which includes destination fee and gas-guzzler tax. About $ 8,000 more will put you behind the wheel of the 500-horsepower BMW M5, while the 400-horsepower Jaguar S-Type R lists for approximately $ 13,000 below the STS-V's asking price. Before you make any decision, be sure to check the current Fair Purchase Price, which shows the real-world prices other consumers are paying for their cars. As for the STS-V's resale value, we expect it to hold up well, with a projected five-year forecast slightly lower than the BMW M5 and Mercedes-Benz CLS63 AMG, but much higher than the Jaguar S-Type R.

2008 Cadillac STS Future Generations

Cadillac STS Overview and History

Introduced in 2007 as a 2008 model, the new Cadillac STS featured a redesigned exterior.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

2008 Cadillac STS Consumer Reviews

arguefoxpro, 08/11/2007
08 STS is hot
302-horsepower engine with direct injection V6. A bolder look on the outside and inside will attract younger buyers. I am 41. I wanted a 4 wheel drive car that can accommodate 3 car seats in the back. I looked at the BMW 535xi, Lexus GS350 AWD Infiniti M35 (currently drive Infiniti M45) at Audi A6. For the money the 2008 I stress the 2008 STS was the best value. The increased performance and the side air extractors, incorporated into the front fenders of STS. New chrome-plated door handles and lower rocker moldings are added for more presence and refinement.

I fall in love everyday
I have owned this STS for 27 months and I love it more everyday. It was a GM owned CPO with only 8200 miles. This is my third Cadillac. My others were all V8s and I do not miss the V8 at all. The V6DI is great engine, not only for the power but the fuel mileage. The car is very comfortable on long trips and handles like a dream. There were a few minor issues early that were promptly fixed by the dealer. Now I only take it in for an annual oil change and inspection. Best car I have ever owned in my 67 years.

Stay Away From The Northstar V8
I have owned 2 Cadillac STS's thus far. The First was a 2005 with the V8 and the one I have now is a 2008. They are great cars for the thought but stay away from the V8 North star engines by all means. At around 87, 000 and up the V8 North star starts going to the ground with problems. The found out problem with this engine is the design for the cylinder head mounting studs start to loosen due to corrosion and the material or metal used for the Head studs that clamp them down. This leads to head gasket failure and even engine damage. You can get the head gaskets fixed but the problem will come back after 30,000 miles or so, ultimately leaving you with a reoccurring and expensive problem. You can re-drill new studs in the engine and the problem still will come back. Its a nice luxury / performance car overall but I recommend buying the V6 with the 306hp. Oh and on my 2005 car the transmission started to give up on me. I think the 5 speed can barely handle the V8 power, the 07 and up have 6 speeds that are more adequate.
molecularvaseline, 11/10/2008
Solid player
I purchased mine at the end of August when there were only V6 AWD models. I traded my V8 STS and thought I would be taking a step down. With V6 DI engine, I really do not miss the V8. So far this car is solid in all respects; handles well, comfortable, reliable, good mileage and is fast enough. In my opinion, this car favorably competes with BMW, MB and the other usual suspects but after you negotiate your final price, there really is no comparison becuse you pay a lot less. The status of a label is unimportant to me (although a Caddy still has some clout left) and as car enthusiast, I look to the raw driving experience. STS is right there and if the V8 G8 had AWD, I would be driving that.
