Though aged in terms of design, the 2007 Jaguar S-Type's classic styling and relaxed demeanor should appeal to those seeking an alternative to more common midsize luxury sedans.

The 2007 Jaguar S-Type and S-Type R hit the market just as the engineering of its replacement is concluding. If this elegantly styled, sweet-natured, midsize luxury machine is what you want, it's likely that 2007 will be your last chance to buy a new one.

The S-Type cribs its styling from Jag's '60s icon, the Mark II sedan, but shares much of its substance with the recently discontinued Lincoln LS; both are/were built around Ford's rear-drive "DEW98" platform and so share basic structural, engine and suspension design. However the V6- or V8-powered S-Type drives like a Jaguar with a blend of road manners, comfort and performance the Lincoln was never quite able to pull off.

An English ambience to the car's interior design and materials helps to distinguish the S-Type from competitors like the BMW 5 Series, Audi A6 and Lexus GS. It offers the driver and passengers a true Jaguar experience; the leather is aromatic, supple and beautifully upholstered, the use of burled walnut veneers is lavish without being tasteless, and the inside door handles are thickly chromed. To use a very British word, it's posh. Still, for all the beauty that interior contains, there are a few discordant elements such as the air-conditioning system's vents that seem as if they belong on a cheaper car.

The S-Type R lacks the hard edge of cars like BMW's M5 or the Mercedes-Benz E55, and in general the Jag is less sporting in its nature than the direct competition. But overall, the 2007 Jaguar S-Type is still capable enough in its old age to serve as a decent alternative to otherwise more common midsize luxury sedans.

The 2007 Jaguar S-Type lineup consists of three models: V6-powered S-Type 3.0, V8-equipped S-Type 4.2 and the roaring S-Type R with a supercharged V8. Even the cheapest S-Type 3.0 comes fully equipped with power controls for virtually all ordinary tasks, leather on the seats, burl walnut wood along the dash and doors, a moonroof, dual-zone climate controls and 17-inch wheels. To that list of equipment the S-Type 4.2 adds a more powerful 320-watt sound system, xenon headlamps, front park control, a DVD-based navigation system (all of which are optional on the S-Type 3.0) and an electric rear sun blind. Options for both the 3.0 and 4.2 include 18-inch wheels and satellite radio.

The S-Type R wears bird's eye maple wood trim in place of burl walnut but otherwise carries much of the equipment found on the 4.2. Beyond that the S-Type R gets "R Performance" oversize disc brakes, an "Enhanced computer Active Technology Suspension" and wider performance tires on 18-inch wheels. Adaptive radar-based cruise control and 19-inch wheels and tires are all stand-alone options on the S-Type R. Also available is a "Luxury Package" that brings aboard the burl walnut trim with additional wood trim on the steering wheel and shift knob, adds that electric rear sun blind back in, puts contrast piping on the seats and throws in those exciting "bright mirror caps."

The S-Type 3.0 is powered by a 235-horsepower 3.0-liter DOHC 24-valve V6. Above that is the S-Type 4.2 with Jaguar's 300-hp 4.2-liter DOHC 32-valve V8 under its hood. The S-Type R plants a Roots-type supercharger on top of that V8 to boost output to a full 400 hp. All three engines are backed by ZF-made six-speed automatic transmissions. Jaguar claims that the S-Type 4.2 will accelerate from a stop to 60 mph in 6.2 seconds, while the S-Type R will do the same deed in 5.3 seconds.

The driver side and passenger two-stage airbags are supplemented by side airbags for the driver side and front passenger, and side curtain airbags for both front and rear passengers. Jaguar's Dynamic Stability Control system, traction control and antilock brakes with brake assist are also aboard to enhance vehicular control. The NHTSA has awarded the S-Type five-star ratings (the highest) after side-impact testing for front and rear seat occupants.

The 2007 Jaguar S-Type is a supremely comfortable machine that makes gobbling up a continent's worth of pavement pleasant. But its limits are lower than some of the competition and its reflexes more subdued. This is, after all, not a BMW, but a Jaguar.

The S-Type's interior mixes beautiful wood veneers, supple leather upholstery and just enough chrome to produce one of the most attractive motoring environments in its class. However, there are a few pieces of cheesy plastic around that keep it from being perfect.

The S-Type R's 400-horsepower supercharged engine delivers the kind of jack-rabbit starts that can instantly create butterflies in your stomach. Despite the absence of a manual shift program, the six-speed ZF transmission performs flawlessly, delivering seamless shifts without lag or hesitation. The strong brakes and responsive steering work hand-in-hand with the big 18-inch performance tires to deliver a sense of confidence and control. Also worthy of praise is Jaguar's Enhanced Computer Active Technology Suspension, or eCATS, a two-stage sport suspension that automatically adjusts the shock absorber damping to deliver the best combination of performance handling and a comfortable ride. In milliseconds, the system can initiate changes to the shock settings, optimizing the suspension for driving dynamics and road conditions.

Adaptive Cruise ControlA variation on the standard cruise control, this optional feature employs radar to maintain a set distance between the S-Type R and the car ahead.Audible Front and Reverse Park ControlAn audible signal alerts the driver when either the front or rear bumper comes too close to a stationary object. This feature is especially helpful when backing up the car, as the S-Type R's high rear end and narrow rear window restrict visibility.

In typical Jaguar fashion, the S-Type R's interior is filled with fine leather, plush carpeting and rich, polished wood, with a large LCD screen prominently positioned above the center console. Used to display the navigation and audio settings, the screen is easy to view but the buttons and controls surrounding it are small, difficult to decipher and look borrowed from a less expensive Ford sedan. We have mixed feelings about Jaguar's traditional J-gate shifter, which is not conducive to enthusiastic driving because it lacks any type of "tap-shift" manual control. Jaguar's thickly-bolstered power-adjustable sports seats, on the other hand, earn high marks for good support and long-term comfort.

From its vintage Jaguar Mark 2-inspired grille and headlamp treatment, to its rounded C-pillar and curved rear windscreen, the S-Type R's British styling remains one of the car's greatest selling points. Though it shares its curvaceous body panels with the other S-Type models, the S-Type R's massaged exterior treatment gives it a more aggressive appearance. In addition to the distinctive "R" badging, Jaguar replaces the chrome grille surround, bumper guards and door handles with matching body-colored trim. An athletic stance is created by lowering the suspension and adding a handsome set of 18-inch, five-spoke Vulcan wheels mounted with wide, high-performance tires, and a modest yet functional spoiler adorns the S-Type R's rear deck lid.

Befitting its status as the top-of-the-line S-Type, the R features a number of impressive standard features. Included in the mix are a supercharged 4.2-liter V8 engine, a ZF six-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), 18-inch alloy wheels, Enhanced Computer Active Technology Suspension (eCATS), stability control, front and rear head-curtain airbags, self-leveling xenon headlamps, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming heated rearview mirrors, leather seating surfaces, heated 16-way power driver's and 12-way power passenger's seats, DVD-based navigation, power tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power-adjustable pedals, dual-zone automatic climate control, power moonroof and a 320-watt Alpine audio system with a trunk-mounted six-disc CD changer.

The new R Luxury Package includes radar-based Adaptive Cruise Control, leather seats with contrasting piping, power rear sunshade, Burl Walnut veneer, wood and leather steering wheel and bright chrome exterior accents covering the bumper blades, grille surround, mirror caps and side window trim. Stand-alone options include Adaptive Cruise Control, 19-inch Barcelona-style wheels and a two-tone interior.

Jaguar's 4.2-liter V8 engine is paired with an Eaton supercharger, creating abundant reserves of low-end torque and horsepower without sacrificing the silky-smooth operation Jaguar owners have come to expect. The belt-driven Eaton supercharger forces air through two intercoolers and from there into the engine's combustion chambers, where the pressurized, cooled air raises efficiency and output. The result is acceleration that pins you to your seat and keeps you there as the car rockets forward. The S-Type R's engine is powerful enough to accelerate it from zero to 60 miles per hour in just 5.3 seconds, yet efficient enough to escape the government's Gas-Guzzler fuel tax.4.2-liter V8 Supercharged400 horsepower @ 6100 rpm413 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/23

With a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 64,000, the S-Type R appears a relative bargain when compared to the BMW M5 ($ 86,195) or the Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG ($ 87,475). Of course, real-world prices may vary widely, so be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what customers in your area are actually paying. In terms of resale, the Jaguar S-Type R is expected to retain only average marks, well below the five-year projected resale figures of the BMW M5, Mercedes-Benz E63 AMG and Cadillac STS-V.

Jaguar S-Type Overview and History

This car represents the facelifted version of the first edition which came out in model year 2000.
Jaguars are elusive, carnivorous creatures that roam South American rain forests. They can be easily recognized by their distinct black speckled fur with spots larger than those of a leopard or cheetah. Such information would be most welcome in a National Geographic show but we don't work for them. We love animals but cover cars and this is all about the wheeled Jaguar.

A sight not as rare as it used to be, Jaguars appeared in 1922 under a different company name and profile. Founded as the Swallow Sidecar company by William Lyons and William Walmsley, the company later dropped the production of sidecars to take on coach building that would eventually lead to the launch of the first Jaguar automobile in 1932. Until 1945, all Lyons & Walmsley made cars bore the SS initials, a reminder of the company's side-car making roots, when the lettering was dropped because of  resemblances to WWII nazi troops labels. Jaguar was picked as the new name.

During the pre-Jaguar period, the company produced multiple models, beautifully styled cars that garnered as much acclaim as they did criticism. Indeed, some voices insisted that Jaguar was more about glam and style rather than pure performance and reliability. Headquartered in Coventry, Great Britan up to this day, the main Jaguar plant dealt more with bodywork design and assembly rather than going through all car-production stage. The engines and chassises were supplied by the Standard Motor Company while the first were later modified to fit Jaguar designs by William Heynes and Harry Weslake, two racing enthusiasts and passionate engine developers.

After having build a number of luxurious saloon cars throughout the 30's, such as the 1932 SS1 and the sporty SS90, Jaguar amazed the automotive industry with the launch of the XK120, the fastest production car at the time. Sporting a 3.4 liter engine capable of delivering some 180 hp, the XK could reach a top sped of over 125 mph and accelerate from 0 to 60 in less than 5 seconds. Its sheer performance, affordability and sporty slim oval-shaped grille turned the car into an icon. The Jaguar had finally smiled, displaying a wonderful row of  competition-puncturing fangs.

Sparking interest in other countries as well, the XK 120 has enjoyed a great deal of popularity having been built in over 10,000 units and becoming Jaguar's first export model. Upgrades of the 120 followed withe the XK 140 and 150.

During the 50's, Jaguar shifted emphasis on building large saloon cars. The Mk VII was the first of a completely new line-up. Despite having been powered by the acclaimed XK engines, the new vehicles were not as successful. the Mk ii however, a smaller and differently styled saloon proved otherwise, becoming Jaguar's second best selling car at the time, having been produced in some 123,000 units.

By the time the 60's came, Jaguar had already build a strong reputation that was further strengthened with the launch of the ferocious E-type. Officially revealed at the Geneva Auto Show in March 1961, the E-type was the ultimate eye-candy and record breaker. Beautifully styled and incredibly fast, the car could reach an amazing 150 mph. Heir of the C and D-type legacy, the new model was unlike anything the world had seen.

The E-type was more technology improved than its predecessors, sporting an overhead cam engine, four wheel disc brakes and independent rear suspension, features that have turned it into a champ car and racing track nightmare for Ferrari who has lost several times against the British producer.

After having been built in over 70,000 units, production of the E-type ceased in 1975 when it was replaced by the not so successful XJS. William Lyons' retirement in 72' was a blow for the company who could not rise to the standards set by its founder. It was save from bankruptcy by the Leyland company. By 1984, Jaguar bought its way out but failed to make an impressive comeback since it had lost its former appeal. 1989 was the year when Jaguar became part of the Ford Motor Company alongside British Land Rover. Ford's tutelage only lasted until 2008 when Jaguar and Land Rover were sold to Indian group Tata Motors. Jaguar's current line-up consists of  luxury sedans such as the XJ models, the executive and fresh XF as a replacement of the S-type, the burgeois X-Type and the sporty XK.

2007 Jaguar S-Type Consumer Reviews

Inspector Morse
We have had this car for three years and it has been fabulous. We had two prior X-Types which were also excellent. It is a superb car around town and amazing - AMAZING - on the open road. The handling is superb, the 3 liter is remarkably robust, and it gets better mileage even than the X-Type. We have always liked the old S cars featured on the BBC 'Inspector Morse' series and this is an elegant modern rendition. The flowing lines are so pretty even as design trends for most cars have become much more angular the past few years. Still rare and unique enough to turn a lot of heads. Snow tires are absolutely essential in northern climes. We will keep this one forever!

Our Jag S-type is definitely one of a kind. Very classy, smooth ride, excellent design. However, we did notice that it needs work on the sunroof area. There's definitely a vibration, a low rattling sounds coming from the ceiling near the sunroof. We took the car back into the dealer in efforts to fix the sounds but it's still there. Maybe I'm a bit more sensitive to sounds than other people but the sound is still there. Hopefully we'll figure out of a way to get rid of the sound. Other than that, an excellent automobile.

Fifty Years Waiting & Worth It!
It's hard to be objective about a car you've waiting fifty years to own. My first car way back in 1965 was a '58 Jaguar MK II. Sadly, I had to sell it when I went into the service. In 2016, I brought a 2007 S Type in British Racing Green. It"s a daily driver. The Jag is brilliant, realible, luxurious, and in a class by it's self. Twelve years old and still turns heads. I"he had people walk across parking lots to tell me how great the car looks. If you find a low mileage with good maintenance record, buy it!

"Love this car!"
This car is, and always will be, a head turner. The comfort and style is above and beyond for this 18 year old car. Runs great. After 18 years I have only had 2 issues. Rebuilt transmission at 18 years old and heater stopped working. Needs a new relay switch or thermostat. AC works great. Loved this car then and love it now.
