The 2014 Buick LaCrosse has some faults, but overall, we like this big sedan for its premium style and comprehensive features.

Although most consumers come home with midsize sedans, large sedans are worth considering, especially if you have a taller family in need of additional passenger space. One of our favorites in this segment is the 2014 Buick LaCrosse, whose highlights include neatly tailored styling, a well-trimmed cabin and a very smooth and quiet ride.

This year, the LaCrosse receives freshened styling to the front and rear (a new hood, grille, lighting clusters, trunk lid and bumpers) and an updated interior. That interior is still quite elegant looking, with sweeping lines and rich surfaces highlighted by the generous use of LED accent lighting. For 2014, though, it now has a cleaner-looking center stack, highlighted by Buick's newest "IntelliLink" touchscreen interface. There are also some new safety features this year, including forward collision warning, lane departure warning and rear cross-traffic alert systems.

Under the hood, little has changed for the 2014 LaCrosse. The base "eAssist" powertrain is a mild-hybrid setup (it can't propel itself solely on electric power) that allows the large Buick to earn an EPA combined fuel economy rating of 29 mpg. This version of the LaCrosse has some downsides -- it's kind of slow and noisy -- but it doesn't cost nearly as much as other fully dedicated hybrids like the Lexus ES 300h. Still, we think most shoppers will prefer the LaCrosse's powerful V6 engine, which better suits the character of the car and is available with all-wheel drive.

Prospective Buick LaCrosse buyers should also be aware that this full-size sedan has an undersized trunk, a potential deal-breaker for some families. In addition, the IntelliLink touchscreen electronics interface looks slick but is often slow to respond to touch inputs, which can be bothersome. Plus, there are some great choices for a roomy, premium-oriented sedan this year, including the smartly designed Acura TL, the powerful Chrysler 300, the stylish Kia Cadenza and the refined Lexus ES 350 or ES 300h hybrid. You really can't go wrong with any of them. The 2014 Buick LaCrosse doesn't have a significant edge over any of these sedans, but it's a solid choice.

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse is a large luxury sedan available in four trim levels: Base, Leather, Premium 1 and Premium 2.

Base models come nicely equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, full power accessories, heated mirrors, dual-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming mirror, an eight-way power driver seat (with four-way power lumbar), split-folding rear seatbacks, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cruise control, OnStar, a 110-volt power outlet, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, an 8-inch touchscreen display and a seven-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, an auxiliary audio jack, iPod/USB interface and smartphone app integration.

Spring for the Leather model and you get foglamps, an auto-dimming driver-side mirror, rear park assist, keyless ignition/entry, a rearview camera, leather upholstery, heated front seats, driver memory settings and an eight-way power front passenger seat.

The Premium 1 ups the ante with the 3.6-liter V6, 19-inch wheels (chrome on front-drive version), an upgraded suspension with adaptive shock absorbers (front-drive version only), heated and ventilated front seats, a heated leather/wood-trimmed steering wheel, a power rear window sunshade and an 11-speaker Bose surround-sound audio system.

The Premium 2 adds 20-inch wheels and a navigation system.

Optional on all but the base LaCrosse is the Ultra Luxury Interior package, which features upgraded leather upholstery, leather armrest/center console trim, a simulated suede headliner and real wood accents on the dash, doors and console.

Also optional on all but the base is the Driver Confidence package #1, which includes xenon headlights, foglights, head-up display, side blind zone alerts (with lane change alerts), rear cross-traffic alerts, and lane departure and forward collision warning systems. The Premium trims can upgrade to the Driver Confidence package #2, which includes all that and adds fully adaptive cruise control, automatic collision preparation and a vibrating "Safety Alert" driver seat.

Some of the features found on the upper trim levels can be added to the lower trims as options. Other notable options include a sunroof and a rear-seat entertainment system with dual headrest-mounted screens.

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse is offered with a choice of two engines. Standard on base and front-wheel-drive Leather trim levels is a mild hybrid powertrain that pairs a 2.4-liter four-cylinder engine with an 11-kilowatt electric motor and a lithium-ion battery pack. Combined peak output is 182 horsepower and 172 pound-feet of torque, and it's sent to the front wheels by way of a six-speed automatic transmission.

In track testing, a LaCrosse with this configuration ran the 0-60-mph dash in 9.2 seconds, a leisurely performance for this segment. Still, this powertrain is about efficiency, not speed. Aided by clever aerodynamic improvements like automatically controlled shutters behind the grille, it delivers an impressive EPA estimate of 29 mpg combined (25 city/36 highway).

Optional for the two trim levels listed above and standard on everything else is a 3.6-liter V6 that cranks out 303 hp and 264 lb-ft of torque. The six-speed automatic and front-wheel drive are again standard, with all-wheel drive optional. At the track, a front-wheel-drive LaCrosse V6 sprinted to 60 mph in 6.8 seconds, which is about average for this segment. Fuel mileage estimates stand at 21 combined (18 city/28 highway) with front-wheel drive and 20 combined (17 city/26 highway) with all-wheel drive.

Standard safety features for the LaCrosse include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags. Also standard is OnStar, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking, stolen vehicle assistance and turn-by-turn navigation. All Buick LaCrosses except the base version have rear park assist and a rearview camera standard.

Optional safety features include blind spot monitoring, lane change alerts (automatically warning you during indicated lane changes when another car is rapidly approaching you on either side from behind), rear cross-traffic alerts, a lane departure warning system, a forward collision warning system and automatic collision preparation. Many of these features tie into the optional vibrating driver seat, which vibrates to indicate the direction of a potential crash threat.

In brake testing, a LaCrosse with the 3.6-liter engine and 19-inch wheels came to a stop from 60 mph in 116 feet -- excellent for this segment. A LaCrosse with eAssist and 17-inch wheels turned in a similarly strong performance, stopping from 60 mph in just 115 feet.

In government crash tests the 2014 Buick LaCrosse scored five (out of a possible five) stars overall, with five stars awarded for both frontal- and side-impact tests. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave it its top "Good" rating in its moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact and roof strength tests.

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse's mild-hybrid powertrain operates seamlessly, rarely reminding the driver of its existence. For instance, when the engine shuts off automatically when the car comes to a stop, you don't get as much of the telltale shudder when it fires back up as you do with most auto stop-start systems. Unfortunately, the 2.4-liter four-cylinder that provides a majority of the motivation here (the electric motor delivers limited assistance) sounds unrefined and feels sluggish, especially if you've got a full load of passengers.

Although it understandably returns lower fuel economy, the strong V6 is better suited to the LaCrosse's personality. Shifts from its automatic transmission are smooth but not particularly quick.

With either engine, the LaCrosse's driving dynamics are perfect for the car's mission of being a refined cruiser. It's easy to steer and has an impressively comfortable and quiet ride. Poor rearward visibility is a problem, though the car's rearview camera and various safety systems help in this regard.

Around turns, you'll encounter plenty of body lean and modest amounts of grip, but this is essentially what we expect from this class of car. Having driven a few current-generation Buick LaCrosses, we've discovered that its ultimate handling capability largely depends on which tires are fitted. A LaCrosse with factory Michelin tires performed significantly better in our handling tests than another test car with Goodyear tires. Most people won't notice this subtlety, but if you're someone who likes to take the back roads on long trips, it's worth paying attention to when you go to the dealership.

Slide behind the steering wheel of the 2014 Buick LaCrosse and you'll find yourself surrounded by graceful curves and upscale materials. Even after the sun sets, the cabin's flowing lines are emphasized by soft blue ambient lighting that adds a classy touch.

If there's a weakness in this artful design, it's that the controls aren't quite as straightforward as some traditional Buick buyers might like. This year's updated infotainment system is pretty user-friendly, but it can be a bit of a reach for shorter drivers and it's sometimes painfully slow to react to touchscreen inputs.

As you'd expect in a luxury sedan, the LaCrosse's cabin is long on comfort. Seats are supportive and there's plenty of leg- and shoulder room even in the backseat. The available heated steering wheel and heated and ventilated front seats are especially pampering.

The LaCrosse's trunk is on the small side, however. With just 13.3 cubic feet of capacity, it holds less than some compact sedans. That number drops even further in models equipped with the mild-hybrid powertrain, where the battery pack reduces capacity to 10.8 cubic feet. The smallish opening can also make loading larger items problematic.

The key point about the 2014 Buick LaCrosse driving experience is the transparency of its eAssist system. A 15-hp electric motor helps the 182-hp 4-cylinder engine during acceleration. When slowing, the motor becomes a generator, recharging a lithium-ion battery pack. The gasoline engine also shuts down at stop signs, but restarts quickly without the shudder typical of some hybrids. In short, the LaCrosse with eAssist drives absolutely normally. We found the handling competent, the ride quality smooth, and the brakes strong, though the new electric power steering lacks road feel. Acceleration with the eAssist system is more than adequate though the engine can get a bit raucous at higher revs. Whether it’s eAssist or the optional V6, the 2014 LaCrosse is also distinguished by exceptionally low interior noise levels in freeway cruising. Another welcome feature in cities like San Francisco is hill-assist, preventing rollback during uphill launches with the engine stopped.

EASSISTA clever and largely transparent marriage of a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, a small electric motor and regenerative braking, the eAssist evolved-mild-hybrid system significantly improves both fuel efficiency and performance without adding a lot of weight or cost.HEAD-UP DISPLAYIt shows speed, navigation instructions, audio status (including song titles) and other key information in your line of sight, seemingly out there over the hood, and its brightness and vertical position are easily adjusted. It’s one of the best we’ve seen.

For 2014, Buick has enhanced the LaCrosse’s warm and comfortable ambience. The seats, leather in all but the basic LaCrosse, are new. There’s a new center control stack with an 8-inch color touch screen, four new color and trim combinations, and a new generation of Buick’s IntelliLink telematics system. Materials have been upgraded, there’s real wood trim, and most surfaces are soft-touch. And as befits an upscale sedan, the LaCrosse is stretch-out roomy and cathedral quiet.

Freshened for 2014, Buick’s big waterfall grille has been subtly enlarged, the hood has more sculpting, the lower grille is equipped with active shutters to reduce aerodynamic drag at freeway speeds, and the headlights have been redesigned, with the option of articulating bi-xenon HID lights. The rear fascia and decklid are also new, with an integrated spoiler and wraparound LED taillights.

The LaCrosse’s list of standard features is long and comprehensive, including a full-color driver information center, OnStar (with a 6-month subscription), SiriusXM Radio (3-month trial), a manual tilt/telescoping steering wheel, remote keyless entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, 17-inch alloy wheels and both Bluetooth and USB connectivity. Standard safety features include traction and stability control, brake assist and six airbags.

The extensive 2014 LaCrosse options list includes bi-xenon high-intensity-discharge adaptive headlights, Side Blind Zone Alert, a (terrific) head-up display, heated and ventilated perforated leather-covered seats, power-adjustable driver-side lumbar support, a heated steering wheel, GPS navigation, a rear-seat DVD entertainment system, a power rear sunshade, and a 110-volt power outlet for charging phones or computers. A new Ultra Luxury package adds premium perforated leather seating in a coffee-hued design tone.

The eAssist powertrain – a 4-cylinder engine plus a small electric motor/generator to provide both a power boost and regenerative braking – is standard on base LaCrosse and Leather versions. A 304-hp 3.6-liter Flex-Fuel-capable V6 is a no-cost option on those two lower-level packages, and the sole offering on Premium I, Premium II and Touring versions. All-wheel drive is available on Leather and Premium I packages, with the V6 only. All combinations use GM’s latest 6-speed automatic transmissions. Though the V6 is stronger, eAssist is frankly more interesting and appealing. It provides a 15-hp on-demand boost to the 182-horsepower 4-cylinder engine. When you’re off the throttle, regenerative braking charges the 115-volt lithium-ion battery.2.4-liter 4-cylinder (with eAssist)182 horsepower @ 6,700 rpm172 lb-ft of torque @ 4,900 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 25/36 mpg3.6-liter V6 (Flex-Fuel E85-capable)304 horsepower @ 6,800 rpm264 lb-ft of torque @ 5,300 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/27 mpg, 13/19 mpg (E85)

The 2014 Buick LaCrosse has a starting Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of around $ 34,060, including destination, with the fuel-efficient eAssist “mild hybrid” 4-cylinder/electric motor system and just over $ 39,000 for the more powerful but less fuel-efficient V6. That compares to about $ 34,700 for a 2014 Audi A4. The LaCrosse eAssist also offers better fuel economy and is EPA-rated at 25 mpg city, 36 highway, compared to 24/32 for the Audi A4. Be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to find out what buyers in your area are paying for their Buick LaCrosses. Resale data is not yet available for the 2014 Lacrosse, but historically, the Buick has not been a front-runner in holding its value.

Buick LaCrosse Overview and History

A new generation of Buick LaCrosse made its debut on the U.S. market at the 2009 North American International Auto Show, in Detroit. The 2010MY Buick LaCrosse will be offered in three versions:CX, CXL and CXS. The LaCrosse CX and CXL are offered with a 3.0L V6 direct injected engine (255 horsepower and 286 Nm of torque), while the LaCrosse CXS is equipped with a 3.6L V6 direct injected engine (280 horsepower and 354 Nm of torque).
Before becoming a trademark of automobile luxury and innovative engineering, Buick was rather fond of plumbing inventions. Born in Arbroath, Scotland, David Dunbar Buick experienced a second-coming to life in his mid 30's when he became particularly interested in gasoline engines. He soon discarded his plumbing-related activities and, by the 1900's, he had already built an impressive number of engines for farming and boating usage. Buick's passion for motors led him to establishing his own company, called Auto-Vim and Power Co.

However, this choice of name lacked the powerful resonance of its founder's name, which was quick to replace it by 1903 - when the company pinned a brand new name tag to its chest: the Buick Manufacturing Co. During the same year, the company's heads went for further simplifying the name by dropping the 'Manufacturing' from the label.

Once corporate identity and appearance issues were satisfactory solved, Buick started focusing on car-engine development. The emphasis Buick put on his work would soon pay back, the genesis of the overhead valve engine having brought the company a generous amount of acclaim.

This was mostly thanks to the positioning of the valves, which allowed Buick engines to be fitted into tighter spaces while granting drivers easy access to maintenance - unlike the majority of the car engines at the time (which sported angle-mounted valves). Although Buick and his top engineering duo, Eugene Richard and Walter L. Marr, were successful in avoiding some major engine-building related intricacies, the brand entered a stage of slow-sales paradox.

Such were the financial difficulties encountered that, by September 1903, David Buick and his financial backer Benjamin Briscoe Jr. sold the firm to a wagon-making group in Flint, Michigan, 60 miles from Detroit (the former headquarters of the Buick factory). Luckily, the Buick plant was moved entirely to Flint, which allowed David Buick, who had been kept as manager, to further focus on his work.

Despite the 1904 construction of the first Flint Buick, the Model B, the by now one-year old Flint-Buick merger was inches away from hitting against the bulk of a metaphorical harassing Mr. Financial Trouble. And it did. The impact left the company with no other alternative than to seek help.

James H. Whiting, manager of the Flint Wagon Works, approached William C. “Billy” Durant, Flint-carriage king and future GM boss, on the company's status. Durant's nose for business as well as his uncanny intuition and promotional skills would later drag Buick from the pits of tar it had fallen into, straight to flashy auto-show glamour, inked front page wows and racing domination.

Although Durant was not a big automobile fan, he immediately recognized the sales-potential of the Buicks. It was the torque and rugged suspension of the cars Buick had built so far that convinced Durant that he had struck gold.

Thanks to the easiness and sturdiness Buicks proved in hill climbing and muddy terrain, Durant ordered a staggering 1000 units before the company had reached the 40 threshold. Though a series of production increase oriented moves, such as the construction of a new Flint-based plant and a partnership with Charles Stewart Mott (axle supplier and future GM head), Durant saved Buick from near extinction.

Durant didn't settle for just ensuring the success of the Buick brand and went farther to conquer racing grounds as well. His team, formed of Louis Chevrolet and Wild Bob Burman (among others), snatched a total of 500 trophies only between 1908 and 1910. The reason to why Buick had so much success was that by 1908 it had become the country's leading automobile producer with 8,820 cars produced. As if this wasn't enough, the new model 10 had topped all the other company's sales, with 4,002 units produced. The success registered by the Buick name grew enough to provide Durant with the grounds for spawning a large holding company. Thus, General Motors was born.

When the 20's came, Buick was numbly bathing in refreshing popularity as it had become the top choice car brand for world leaders. In breaks between garnering acclaim, Buick was busy crossing finish lines and popping champagnes from the height of first-place racing podiums across the world.

In fact, Buick had virtually conquered the world, with automobiles having taken part in major expeditions and crossings, such as the Lowel Thomas-led first motorized trip into Afghanistan, 1923.

However, the end of the 20's brought along not-so-great news, as the Great Depression swept the country, destroying lots of companies in the process. Buick was able to withstand the fund-consuming Depression, having displayed a range of fully rejuvenated models sporting performance Dynaflow automatic transmissions, aircraft inspired portholes, or Ventiports, and renewed style elements such as flashy vertical grilles and meticulously executed finishing touches.

With its growth uninterrupted, Buick continued to hold its position as the all-leading American car producer throughout the 90's with an emphasis on sedans. The Y2K year inoculated a fresh take on the car with Buick extending its activity in developing new convertible and crossover concepts. The reshaping process undergone by Buick has left the company focusing on a new range of automobiles, currently flaunting the three premium LaCrosse, Lucerne and Enclave models.

2014 Buick LaCrosse Consumer Reviews

Great Value, Best in category for the price
I cross-shopped this 2014 LaCrosse w/the Avalon hybrid, ES300 hybrid, MKZ hybrid, Fusion hybrid, and some 1 year used Audi A4's and BMW 3-series; this care definitely had a superior suspension and quieter cabin that all of the above. My car is my automotive office; I need to have reliable, quiet tele-conferences while driving, but also want to be able to crank some tunes in between w/a high quality audio system. It does both of these very well. The infotainment system works fine, but is a bit slow, but as I cross-shopped, I find that it is true for most brands. I was biased in trying to get a domestic car if the quality and value were there; I believe I got it! Mixed MPG = 32 after 1K miles!

My first Buick, not my Dad's car
Well, after owning several foreign cars including BMW, Mercedes...upper scale american, Lincoln, Cadillac... I was trying hard not to like this car, it's a BUICK! I was so wrong, in love with this car! It handles well, plenty of pep and has just as many if not more gadgets than some of the foreign cars I've had. Gas mileage is a shocker...great on the interstate! I get a lot of compliments even. I absolutely love a Mercedes S class but for the difference in money the Buick holds its place in luxury feel. And maintenance is half the cost also. If you want all the toys and a comfortable car do not miss the Lacrosse when shopping for your next car. Get all options and you'll love your purchase. The only option mine lacks is back seat dvd , single, didn't need it. But enjoy the car immensely! Happy hunting..

Buick is a touch of class
Needed a car more comfortable for my back. I traded my 2015 Focus Titanium for a 2014 Buick Lacrosse and the difference is very noticeable. With the comfort of the front seats and the quiet ride, the 2014 Buick Lacrosse doesn't disappoint. I wanted the hiper strut front suspension and adaptable ride so I looked for a FWD with 19 inch wheels. Everything about the car feel high quality. No rattles and a very solid feel. Love the looks ride of this car. Test drive one. I am impressed.

Just leased a Carbon Black on Black, turned in my 2011 Regal Turbo, going from sporty to land cruiser and more comfort, which is what I wanted. So far I love the newly designed interior and the simplified layout. Intellilink is nice and easy to use and the voice command is much improved folks. Side Blind Zone Alert is truly wonderful, still make my headcheck though. Update: Three years later, still love this vehicle, never any problems other than the dealer had to replace my battery a few months ago. Have decided to keep this vehicle(buy it). Still looks new, and drives great. The new Lacrosse (2017), sits too low for me and the looks are just ok, resembles the Impala too much in my opinion.

2015 Buick LaCrosse
"Ok car."
Bought this car new. I’m not a mechanical person so when I say this I hope you know what I’m saying. I’ve had this car for 4 years. I’ve had to replace something called a cam shaft, a pully on the engine, a belt to the engine, battery, a low compressor, multiple fuses, and still sometimes the radio and screen will just not work for 15-20 minutes. I’ve had to have the keys replaced 3 times already. To much for a car that’s 4 years old. Even though it has a lot of issues. This car still got me home safely. I was out of town, this car still got me home (15 hour drive) with a bad compressor and cam shaft. So if you get this car make sure you get an extended warranty. It’s has lots of room and comfortable ride. Interior material could be made of a better material.
