While the 2009 Suzuki SX4 might not be your top pick if gas mileage is your chief concern, it's worth a look -- particularly in hatchback form -- if you're very tall or in need of an affordable all-weather vehicle.

To the average American, Suzuki is a motorcycle company that also happens to make cars. In Japan, however, the big S is one of the giants in the automobile marketplace, where its variety of home-market small cars has proven popular. In the U.S., success hasn't been quite the same, as Suzuki has offered a number of forgettable subcompacts. But now, with Suzuki fielding attractive vehicles such as the 2009 SX4 Crossover and Sport, the company is hitting its stride.

In the SX4 family, there are a tallish sedan and a mini-SUV-like hatchback ("Crossover"). With handsome styling and available all-wheel drive, the Crossover offers those in snowy climes a low-cost way of getting around. In Sport trim, the sedan provides a lowered and more firmly tuned suspension, 17-inch wheels and a lower body kit that add up to a sportier driving experience. Mechanically, all SX4s are the same, using a 2.0-liter inline-4 that makes a respectable 143 horsepower.

Not having a long-standing big name to sell it, the 2009 Suzuki SX4 takes the age-old approach of offering more for the money than the segment's sales superstars, e.g., the Toyota Corolla and Honda Civic. For around the same price as a smaller Fit or Toyota Yaris, the Sport gives you a roomy cabin, a more powerful engine, snazzy 17-inch alloys, power everything, a CD player, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls, a trip computer and even automatic climate control. And this year Suzuki sweetens the deal further by fitting a navigation system as standard on the upper trims, making it the only economy car to have that feature included at no extra cost. An upgrade to the nav system adds Bluetooth connectivity, real-time traffic reporting, weather reporting and even a gas station finder to get you the lowest fuel prices.

Still, this is a large, competitive field, and those looking for high fuel economy numbers might be disappointed in the SX4's below-average mileage ratings. The Sport sedan is a better choice than many, as we'd easily take it over a Chevy Cobalt, Dodge Caliber or Versa, though it has a tough rival in the well-equipped Hyundai Elantra. The Crossover, by virtue of its mini-SUV styling, hatchback versatility and low-cost all-wheel-drive option, makes a somewhat stronger case for itself. But either way, we suggest giving the SX4 a look if you're in the market for an affable, affordable small car that doesn't scream econobox.

The 2009 Suzuki SX4 is a compact car available in four-door sedan and five-door hatchback body styles. The sedan is front-wheel drive only, while the SX4 hatchback ("Crossover") can be had in either front- or all-wheel drive.

The sedan comes in three basic trims: base, LE and Sport. However there are also trim-level specific packages which include LE with Popular Package, Sport with Technology Package and Sport with Touring Package. The hatchback comes in base Crossover, Crossover with Technology Package and Crossover with Touring Package.

Standard features on the base SX4 sedan include 15-inch steel wheels, full power accessories, a tilt steering wheel and a 60/40-split folding rear seat, but little else. Should you also want air-conditioning and a four-speaker sound system with a CD player, step up to the LE. The LE with Popular Package adds keyless remote, a sport suspension, cruise control and a leather-wrapped steering wheel with audio controls. The Sport adds 17-inch alloy wheels, four-wheel disc brakes, a lower body kit and a navigation system. The Sport with Technology Package adds foglamps and the upgrade to the nav system (Bluetooth connectivity, real-time traffic reporting, weather reporting, local gas prices). The Sport with Touring Package has the above equipment plus keyless ignition and entry, heated sideview mirrors, automatic climate control and an upgraded audio with nine speakers (including a subwoofer).

The base SX4 hatchback is equipped similar to the LE with Popular Package sedan, minus the sport suspension and leather steering wheel with audio controls, but with 16-inch alloy wheels and stability control. The Crossover with Technology Package adds the upgrade to the nav system, the fancy steering wheel and cruise control. The Crossover with Touring Package adds all-wheel drive, foglamps, a rear spoiler, heated sideview mirrors, automatic climate control, heated seats, keyless entry and ignition and the upgraded audio system.

As there is such a large variety of trims, options are few and consist of an automatic transmission, all-wheel drive (for the non-Touring-equipped Crossovers) and a rear brush plate for the Crossover's hatch sill.

Power for all Suzuki SX4s comes from a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 143 hp and 136 pound-feet of torque. It's connected to a standard five-speed manual transmission or an optional four-speed automatic. We've timed an automatic-equipped hatchback at a leisurely 11.3 seconds for the 0-60-mph run.

The fuel economy estimates for the SX4 range from 23 mpg city/31 mpg highway and 26 mpg combined for the base sedan with the automatic transmission down to 21/28/24 for the Crossover with AWD. Both are on the low end for a subcompact sedan or hatchback.

Every 2009 Suzuki SX4 comes with antilock disc brakes, front-seat side airbags and head-protecting side curtain airbags for all outboard passengers. Traction and stability control, an unusual feature for this class, is standard on the Touring-equipped sedan and all Crossover trims.

In government crash testing, the SX4 (both sedan and Crossover) received four stars (out of five) in frontal tests for both driver and passenger. In side impact tests, the SX4 earned five stars for the driver and four stars for the rear passenger.

Though it has a powerful engine compared to its subcompact competition, the 2009 Suzuki SX4 is no hot rod. A typically heavier curb weight negates any advantage, and the engine is light on low-end torque. As a result, acceleration is no better than most rivals'. Buyers would be wise to stick with the manual gearbox: It makes better use of the engine's power while offering a satisfyingly snappy gearchange.

The SX4 does deliver a smooth, refined ride quality, and the standard antilock disc brakes don't seem to mind the extra heft. Big bumps barely upset the suspension, and the hatchback's sizable 16-inch tires provide solid grip. With its lower-profile 17-inch tires and firmer suspension, the SX4 Sport sedan is the best handler of the lot, and body roll is well managed through the corners. For a car with "Sport" in its name, however, its steering feedback is disappointingly minimal. Buyers seeking a truly sporting drive in an inexpensive car would be better served by a Honda Fit or a lightly optioned Mazda 3 i.

The Suzuki SX4's cabin has a clean design with large, three-dial climate control knobs that sit just below a compact, well-labeled stereo. Unfortunately, said stereo doesn't include the auxiliary audio jack younger buyers will be looking for, and the quality of some interior plastics isn't as high as in some rivals, such as the Fit, Versa and Scion xD.

In terms of passenger room, however, the SX4 earns high marks. Very tall folks will appreciate the Suzuki's voluminous headroom in both the front and rear. The propped-up driving position may feel a bit awkward to some consumers, but ex-SUV owners will find it familiar and beneficial to outward visibility. Knee room can be tight for adults seated in back, but the high-mounted bench provides good thigh support. In the hatchback, the 60/40-split rear seat can be lowered and tumbled forward to open up an ample 38 cubic feet of cargo room. And this year, the sedan also sports a 60/40-split folding rear seat. The sedan offers a generous 15 cubic feet of trunk capacity, equal to that of many midsize sedans, while the Crossover provides 54 cubic feet.

With its compact proportions and relatively tight turning circle, the 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover is easy to maneuver, even in tight confines. The steering is fairly quick and precise while the brakes are competent and sure, despite a slightly soft pedal feel. Ride comfort is good over most road surfaces, although the compliance that helps deliver that smooth ride also allows for a fair amount of body motion during spirited cornering. The SX4 Crossover's multi-mode all-wheel-drive package brings extra confidence all year 'round, and can be further upgraded with the available stability and traction controls that are part of the Touring Package. However, the absence of a low range rightly indicates that this stylish Suzuki is more at home on the road rather than off-road and far from pavement.

Intelligent All-Wheel-Drive system (i-AWD)Button-activated i-AWD lets the SX4 operate as an economical front-driver or automatically transfer up to 50 percent of the engine's power to its rear wheels as traction conditions worsen or when the tires start to slip. A third "Lock" mode keeps 50-70-percent of the available torque up front when driving in extra-slick conditions at speeds up to 36 miles per hour. Garmin NavigationStandard on the front-drive models and available on all-wheel drive models, the Garmin-based navigation system can be upgraded to include Bluetooth connectivity and messaging, real-time traffic alerts and pre-loaded destinations.

The SX4 Crossover packs an impressive amount of usable space for people and cargo inside its nicely finished and feature-rich cabin. A black and silver color scheme with brushed aluminum accents, clearly legible instruments and well-positioned switchgear highlight its suitably sporting look, although lots of hard plastic trim bits deserve some legitimate criticism. The front seats favor comfort over lateral support, but the 60/40-split rear bench can handle two adults or a trio of kids and, when it's folded and tumbled into its maximum-utility position, the total cargo capacity is increased from 16.0 to 43.0 cubic feet.

A product of the world-renowned Italdesign styling studio, the 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover's mildly wedge-shaped bodywork matches form with function. Significant elements of its clean, aerodynamic shape include a large glass area with triangular, fixed front windows, located forward of the doors, that improve driver sightlines, and well-scaled rear side doors that ease entry and exit. A large, one-piece rear hatch and built-in roof rails enhance utility, while relatively big P205/60R16 all-season tires on alloy wheels further emphasize the SX4 Crossover's dynamic character. Aluminum accents on its front and rear valance panels add visual impact to the black perimeter molding that encircles its lower body.

Better equipped in base form than many of its competitors, the 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover's crowning touch is its easy-to-use Garmin navigation system (standard on front-wheel drive models). Other features include a full array of power assists, keyless remote entry, air conditioning, a tilt steering column and an AM/FM/CD/MP3-capable audio system. Key safety items include four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes with Electronic Brake-force Distribution and front, Electronic Stability Control, traction control and front-side and side-curtain airbags.

In addition to its three-mode intelligent All-Wheel-Drive system (i-AWD), options for the SX4 Crossover are divided into two packages. The Technology Package includes cruise control, a leather-wrapped steering wheel with integrated audio controls and an upgraded navigation unit including Bluetooth phone connectivity. The Touring Package adds heated outside mirrors, heated front seats, automatic climate control, keyless entry and start, a 380-watt premium audio package with six-disc CD changer, fog lamps and various other trim items. Key dealer extras include XM Satellite Radio and an iPod interface.

The 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover has a 2.0-liter 16-valve in-line four-cylinder engine that makes 143 horsepower and 136 pound-feet of torque. Those are more than competitive figures for small, four-cylinder wagons; but, with its somewhat hefty curb weight of nearly 3,000 pounds, the SX4 Crossover does suffer a bit in the acceleration department. Although slightly quicker with the five-speed manual gearbox, the SX4 is easier to drive in heavy traffic situations with the optional four-speed automatic. 2.0-liter in-line 4143 horsepower @ 5800 rpm136 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/29 (FWD, manual), 22/30 (FWD, automatic, 21/28 (AWD)

Reflecting Suzuki's aggressive approach to value, the 2009 Suzuki SX4 Crossover's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts near $ 16,500 and, even with the automatic transmission and the Touring Package, will be less than $ 19,000. All-wheel drive adds a mere $ 500 to the bottom line. While you might find a lower sticker price on some front-drive-only alternatives, such as the Honda Fit and Scion xB, a comparably equipped all-wheel-drive Jeep Compass or Nissan Rogue will be more than $ 20,000. Residual value on the SX4 Crossover significantly outshines its Suzuki Reno and Forenza siblings and almost mirror the Jeep Compass. However, it still lags behind most other Japanese alternatives, regardless of their drivetrain configurations.

Suzuki SX4 Overview and History

Michio Suzuki, the founder of the Suzuki company, started pretty much like Toyota, in the textile industry, producing automated looms in 1909 in a small seacoast village called Hamamatsu. For years, his company was successful, but as time passed, Suzuki realized that he will have to diversify if he wanted to stay in business.

He turned to car making and in 1937 started developing a prototype. Unlike Toyota, who chose to copy an American six-cylinder engine, Suzuki created their own model, a four-cylinder version which put out 13 horsepower. But as WWII began, production of passenger cars became a luxury so Suzuki turned back to loom-making to support Japan's new cotton industry. All that stopped when the market crashed in 1951.

Versatile and ingenious, Suzuki now turned to making engines for bicycles. Unlike other engines that could be mounted to bikes, his motors had a unique feature that allowed the rider to pedal assisted by the engine or completely disconnect the pedals. This captured the attention of the government who granted funds to Suzuki for research.

During the 50s Suzuki released several models: in 1955 the Suzulight SS, a-2 door sedan, the Suzulight SD, a 2-door wagon, the SL – a 3 door sedan and the SP, a pick-up. Out of all of them, the SP proved to be the most successful, being mass-produced and improved during the 60s. Good sales for the SP which was regarded asa commercial type of vehicle, meant that in 1960 the Suzulight Van, the TL, was introduced. Other models from the 60s include the small Suzuki Fronte 360 and the Suzuki Fronte 500.

The famous off-road Jimny came in 1970, which had several variations of chassis and engine. The other cars from the 70s are the Cervo, Alto and the Fronte, also with a number of variations and improvements along the years.

As the 80s rolled in, Suzuki began expanding across the ocean, thanks to a business agreement with GM (in 1981) which gave them an important niche in the western market. Also, they began a partnership with the Indian car company Maruti in 1983 to produce cars there. A year later, in 1984, Suzuki Motor GmbH Deutchland opens up its doors in Heppenheim, Germany.

The Swift and the Vitara models were introduced in the late 80s and Suzuki reached a production of 10 million units. During the 90s, the company continued to expand with factories all over the world and several other 4x4 models were introduced. Right now, Suzuki is listed as being the 12th biggest automotive manufacturer in the world with 35 production facilities all over the Globe and being present in 192 countries.

2009 Suzuki SX4 Consumer Reviews

No Complaints So Far...
Purchased the car used in November 2011 with 21,400 miles. Six thousand miles later I have had zero problems. I have only changed fluids and rotated tires. Traded a 4-cyl Ford Ranger for the SX4. Gas mileage for both vehicles is the same: 27 city/30 highway. However the SX4 has AWD, a primary reason for the purchase. It supposedly carries the lowest MSRP of any AWD vehicle sold in the U.S. Although after owning the SX4 six months, nothing on it appears cheap. The glowing consumer reviews on Edmunds sealed the deal (thanks Edmunds’ readers). It is a tall vehicle which probably explains the high wind noise which becomes annoying at speeds greater than 80mph. Also the engine needs a

Crossover 4dr Hatchback w/Technology Pkg, Nav (2.0L 4cyl 5M)
A great small crossover
The first generation SX4 Crossover is a smartly styled small 5-door hatchback designed for Suzuki by the Italian firm of Italdesign Guigiaro. It is comfortable to drive and has a surprising amount of interior room. It is not a luxury car, but the interior appointments are nice and as good as what you would find in other Japanese cars of this size. The fit and finish is above par, and the materials have proven to be durable to me under normal use. You can fold and flip up the rear seats to get lots of cargo carrying room with a fairly flat floor. I am the second owner of my 2009 which has the Technology package that came standard with a Garmin Nuvi navigation device that is cleverly built into a retractable compartment on the top of the dashboard. While it has a small screen, the voice directions are very clear, and you can download map updates from Garvin or third parties via the Internet. The SX-4 scored well in crash tests, no doubt due to its rugged construction with front, side, and curtain air bags. It handles and brakes with precision. Its small size makes it easy to park and drive on crowded streets, but it is stable enough for 70 m.p.h Interstate highway trips. Its acceleration is adequate. Its fuel economy is good. With 86,000 miles on mine, there have been no repairs needed except for normal maintenance like oil changes. A downside is that Suzuki no longer sells passenger vehicles in north America, but they do honor the 10 year 100,000 mile powertrain warranty at a network of dealers (my warranty is still in effect). I have heard that sourcing parts can be a challenge for major stuff if needed, but I have not needed any yet, and you can find many parts and accessories on eBay, including "dress-up" options, many of which come from China. Mine is not equipped with All Wheel Drive (we do not get winter road conditions in Florida), but I'd imagine that would really be good in many areas of the country with those ice and snow conditions. The resale prices are probably lower than equivalent cars due to Suzuki having gone out of business, so if you can find a low mileage SX4, I don't think you could go wrong in buying it.

Sharp peppy thing!
We just bought this car used with 19200 miles. It is in excellent shape and feels like it just rolled off the showroom floor. Shifting is smooth and easy. Love the looks of it inside and out. Features on dash well placed and everything very visible. I like the buttons on the steering wheel but would prefer they were lit for nighttime driving. 2WD and AWD selections are amazingly easy and SO handy in bad weather. I'm sure this car handles better than those crossovers and pickups that don't have AWD. Love heated seats, higher driving position, huge windshield and heated side mirrors. So many perks for such a small price! Cons are:wish it had better fuel economy and the gas tank is too small.

Love my Suzuki!!!!
This car has been the best car I have owned! Good gas mileage, low repair cost, great in rain and snow! Love the AWD! I have not had to do a repair besides maintenance, new tires, and brake pads until I hit 150,000 miles. I have had this car up in the mountains, commuting, etc.. I needed a new transmission at 152,000 miles. It has been a great dependable car! I'm now at 170,000 and still running great! I wouldn't want any other car.

"180k miles and we still going strong"
My dad bought this new back in 2008, just to have a cheap fuel efficient car to get him back and forth to work (his truck was a major gas guzzler). He was expecting to have it for a few years, and then sell it for a “cooler” ride. I ended up getting it while in highschool (2011) and have had it ever since (Nov 2019 atm) _______________________________________________ ____COMFORT ________________________________________________ I’m 6ft tall but the front suits me just fine. I have taken it on 7+ Hour road trips without issue. Backseat has no leg room at all. My mom is shorter and hates to drive it. She complains about the headrests in the front making her head push forward, seats uncomfortable. My dad, my sister, and myself have never had issues. But we’re all taller than mom. It didn’t have arm rests for those lengthy drives, unfortunately, but I bought one online that sits into the console, and that did the trick. It’s not well insulated sound wise, so driving at highway speeds 70+ Requires cranking the radio up. I’m sensitive to noise though. I can fit over 200 lbs of grain bags in the very back but it’s a bit squatty looking. More if I fold the seats down. Lot of storage space then. ________________________________________________ POWER_____________________________________________ Shocker, there’s a hamster in the engine. Putting on speed quickly is a challenge, but it’s a 4 cylinder, therefore not surprising. But on the plus side... ECONOMY Car has great gas mileage- which is why my dad bought it in the first place. I drive over 70 miles a day round trip and average 31 mpg. ________________________________________________ DURABILITY___________________________________________ Fuel pump gave up on life around 60k miles. THAT was a fun repair. Front driver side tire pressure gauge was screwed up. Had some issues with the a/c switching off randomly (I live in Florida, and that sucked.) Because I live in FL with the beating sunshine and no cover for my car, just a year ago I got the hood and roof repainted when I began to notice sunspots. The radio crapped out on me maybe three years ago. Had a new one installed with Bluetooth. Aside from that I can’t think of any major issues with it. Had floor mats custom made because I live out in the boonies and track mud and sand everywhere (and was getting sick of vacuuming the rugs constantly). I would like to have a grille guard for it (I have hit deer before) but alas, good luck finding one. Must be custom fit or it’s a no go. ________________________________________________________ Overall I’m very pleased with it. It was my very first car, it’s been paid off for years, and it’s running perfectly. I have no plans to sell it, I’m glad my dad picked it back in 2008, even though I gave him grief for buying “the clown car” at the time.

"Cheap and reliable"
I have had this car for a couple of years and I must say it does the job. It still gets 30 miles to the gallon. I just made a trip from Florida to Arizona with no problem. Everything still works on the car, though It is not what I consider a comfortable car for long trips but as far as reliable and efficient it gets 5 stars. A great commuter. I have done a tune up and regular oil changes and replaced the timing belt and that is it. The parts are cheap. It has some pep, even at 163000 miles. I would not hesitate to buy this little orphan again.

"Fun car with fun features"
The car seem to have pep! The trunk is big and the seats fold down very low. I like the stock stereo and there all these little features that are nice to have than became standard in more cars of the future. There are side air bags and the windows are big plus very tall people can fit in the rear seat or 3 collage students! Overall I am happy with the car and forgot to mention the wheels and disk breaks and performance tires to keep you on the road.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
