While the 2007 Bentley Arnage's ambience, performance and luxury rank among the world's finest cars, its six-figure price hike over arguably superior competitors makes it a questionable value even by the standards of this whimsical price bracket.

When Volkswagen took control of the storied Bentley make in the late '90s, it quickly set about to infuse the stodgy British automaker with modern design, German engineering and an expanded lineup of models accessible to the merely rich instead of the absurdly rich. For the most part, VW has been successful, but keeping a toehold in the past is the 2007 Bentley Arnage, which upholds the marque's tradition of building big, bold, unabashedly British touring sedans. Whereas other high-luxury sedans tout their precision engineering and supreme levels of refinement, the Arnage brings old-money prestige and acres of wood trim to the table.

While most sedans in this price range use a 12-cylinder engine, the 2007 Bentley Arnage drives its rear wheels with a twin-turbocharged 6.8-liter V8 whose 738 pound-feet of torque make a Corvette look like a Cobalt (though the Arnage's corpulent 5,700-pound body somewhat dampens the effect). New turbochargers boost that engine's output by 50 horsepower in all models in 2007, gas gets gulped at the rate of 12 mpg and the Arnage's imposing wide-eyed look means business. Not exactly what you'd call inconspicuous consumption. Ride quality is as plush as you'd expect it to be in a $ 200K luxury sedan, but with the Arnage's aged platform, handling is by no means as precise or refined as in the Bentley's newer, more sophisticated competition.

Bentley character is also evident throughout the Arnage's interior, which is famous for being vast in room and opulent in feel, though sometimes confusing and inconsistent in layout. Such inconsistency is the result of imposing modern-day technology in a cabin whose original design was conceived decades ago.

Overall, we think anyone planning to blow the bank on a car should think about going the extra monetary mile to get everything right. Newer engineering, a more rewarding drive and more regal interior furnishings can be found within the Maybach 57 and Rolls-Royce Phantom. The same holds true for Bentley's own VW-engineered (and $ 50,000 cheaper) Continental Flying Spur sedan, not to mention many of the less prestigious German touring sedans. Still, if rarity and British boisterousness mean more to you than any other measurement of merit, the 2007 Bentley Arnage might be right up your alley.

The 2007 Bentley Arnage sedan comes in three trims: the $ 230K "mainstream" Arnage R, the sportier $ 250K Arnage T and the stretched $ 270K Arnage RL. Those who demand absolute power look to the Arnage T for its 50-hp edge, while the Arnage RL's extra 10 inches of body and wheelbase should please those seeking more backseat room than they could ever use. Aside from being loaded at all levels, with 18-inch wheels, xenon headlights, power front seats with four-position driver memory, reclining rear seats, tri-zone climate control, DVD navigation, Bluetooth, and front and rear parking sensors, Bentley offers plenty of customization options for colors, materials, wheels, badging and entertainment systems.

All Arnages now use Bentley's long-running 6.8-liter V8, which evolves for 2007 with Mitsubishi twin turbos that spool up faster than last year's. With 500 horsepower and 738 lb-ft of torque in Arnage T trim, this engine works with a new six-speed automatic transmission to rocket the huge rear-wheel-drive sedan to 60 mph in 5.2 seconds. The Arnage R and RL's 450 horsepower provide slightly less speed, but with torque rated at 645 lb-ft, expect either of these Arnages to feel more forceful than their numbers suggest.

Bentley loads up every 2007 Arnage with side and head airbags for front and rear passengers, antilock brakes, traction control, stability control, front and rear parking sensors and a tire-pressure monitor. No agency has crash-tested the Arnage, but with 5,700 pounds and loads of crush space at both ends, the laws of physics are on Bentley's side.

The 2007 Bentley Arnage has big power, big torque and big brakes to go with its big size. Naturally, all this bigness results in the none-too-small number of a 5,700-pound curb weight, which keeps performance at rather average levels for a luxury car. More linearity in the throttle and brakes wouldn't hurt, either, nor would more feel in the steering. Still, the massive torque makes the Arnage feel alert at any speed. In addition, some will equate the heavy-handed way in which the Bentley goes about its work with luxury and stateliness -- qualities that extend to the way the Arnage absorbs bumps and road noise on the open highway.

The Bentley Arnage continues the classic English fashion of beautifully finished leather and wood surroundings, all arranged for an opulent old-world feel. Upgrading to the new world is as easy as checking the option boxes for DVD, dual-screen LCD TVs, Alpine six-disc MP3 CD changer, or – no kidding – a personal computer with wireless keyboard. The mood of luxury is somewhat spoiled by a cheap-feeling turn signal stalk and aesthetically mismatched stereo and navigation systems that desperately need ergonomic help. Still, the Arnage is still a one-of-a-kind place with stretch-out space for five.

Though the Arnage T's handling prowess is impressive for its heft, it still won't maneuver through quick, tight turns as responsively as its sportier sibling, the Continental GT coupe. At speed, the car's substantial weight may seem to give it a relentless momentum, which makes one appreciate the car's high-performance ventilated disc brakes. This sedan isn't meant to fly like a sports car but, as a luxury cruiser, the Arnage has few rivals and is smooth and comfortable, whether you're seated in the front or rear.

Champagne CoolerIf you don't want to spring for the cocktail bar, a center console bottle cooler large enough to accommodate your favorite champagne does the trick and includes a pair of flutes.Family CrestBentley is all about the bespoke lifestyle. Have a family crest you just need to show off? Bentley will carve your crest in your choice of wood and inlay it on the sills of all four doors. If there's a tree in your yard that needs to be removed, have the wood sent to the craftsmen at Bentley and they'll custom install it as your car's interior.

As you would expect, the Arnage T cabin envelopes you in luxury. Diamond-quilted leather seating is soft to the touch yet firm for support. Dark-stained burled walnut is an option among a choice of eight kinds of veneers and four choices of marquetry inlay. A four-color information center for navigation, audio and climate is simple to use. The center console is restyled, with heavy chromed metal buttons and toggles for control of windows and seat positions. A new chromed-and-leather shift knob and knurled door handles are substantial and pleasant to the touch.

Bentley owners would chafe at any monumental changes to the traditional, rather boxy design, so this year's updates are somewhat subtle. Still, Bentley took a slight risk on the Arnage T, with flashy chromed fender vents, 19-inch five-spoke dark-smoked alloy wheels and a dark-tinted titanium grille, all of which are masculine and aggressive.

Bentley offers an over-the-top number of standard features, including a choice of 20 paint colors, 19 seatbelt colors and 10 headliner colors, and a six-CD sound system. One little wrinkle in standard features is the new steering wheel, which tilts but doesn't telescope, and could pose a problem for those outside the norms of leg length or torso height.

Audiophiles will consider the Arnage T's Alpine sound system with a sub-woofer and five-channel amplifier at a price around six thousand dollars. And if you're on the road during cocktail hour (and you're being chauffeured, of course) then peer inside the onboard cocktail compartment, where you'll find crystal decanters, tumblers and a shaker.

With 50 more horsepower than its Arnage R and RL brethren and the same new six-speed automatic transmission, Bentley claims the almost three-ton Arnage T will accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just 5.2 seconds on its way to a top speed of 179 mph. 6.7-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 (Arnage T)500 horsepower @ 4200 rpm738 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3200 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 11/16 6.7-liter, twin-turbocharged V8 (Arnage R and RL)450 horsepower @ 4100 rpm645 lb.-ft. torque @ 1800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 10/15

The Arnage T is priced very close to a quarter of a million dollars; roughly $ 20,000 more than the Arnage R and $ 20,000 less than the Arnage RL. Bespoke options are priced individually based upon the intricacy of the request. There are few competitors in this rare stratum of automotive luxury. The Maybach and the Rolls Royce Phantom are equally exclusive but both are priced to start at about $ 100,000 more and don't necessarily offer better value - if, in a strict sense, "value" is a significant purchase consideration in this category.

Bentley Arnage Overview and History

Back in 1930, Woolf Barnato put down £200 that he could take less time to reach London by car (in a Bentley Six Speed), starting from St Raphael, than the train would from the same starting point to French destination Calais. Bentley Mulliner introduced a brand new Arnage Limousine model in 2005. Bentley launched its second generation Arnage R model in 2005, aiming to reinforce its credentials on the high-luxury saloon sector.
The definition of luxury may have nothing to do with the streets but, paradoxically, it can be seen roaming through some of the least expected places, rims glimmering, wood and chrome finished steel bulk rolling silently through concrete labyrinth passage ways. It's an automobile that goes great with yachts and French Riviera vacations as well as New Zealand wool pin stripe suits and finely designed porcelain buttons embedded in solid gold.

Bentley has been a provider of quality stand-out privileged social and financial statement-vehicles since 1919. Founded by Walter Owen Bentley (1888-1971), Bentley Motors has grown into a world leading car-maker and also a symbol of Great Britain, as well as sole provider of wheels for the Queen through the 2002 released State Limousine.

The company's founder had primarily been known for designing and making reliable rotary engines that were fitted on aircraft during World War I, before successfully entering the auto-world. Before becoming notorious with the Bentley BR1 aero-engine during the war, Bentley had been in partnership with his brother H.M., selling French D.F.P. cars. It was during those times that he thought of establishing his own car-making business.

Soon after Bentley Motors was formed in January, 1919, the company was "allowing" Walter Owen to exhibit a chassis with an engine replica at the London Motor Show. The design was a success and the orders poured in. However, the company was unable to carry the deliveries out in time, with the first cars being ready for shipping only in September 1921, one year later than initially estimated.

Although, it had a lot of fans and enjoyed great value on the UK market, the company suffered a fate similar to that of  Aston Martin, undergoing several ownership changes and financial trouble. Fortunately enough, its allies were constantly on the look-out and possessed vast riches that they used to keep Bentley on track.

Bentley was acquired by millionaire and 'Bentley Boy' enthusiast Wolf Barnato, who became the new owner of the company in 1925. Despite the steady cash flow that was used to stop Bentley Motors from sinking, the Great Depression wiped clean any desire for expensive automobiles, leaving Bentley poor and disoriented.

This time, help would come from giants from Rolls Royce, who bought the work shop in 1931. Thanks to the 'Bentley Boys', the marque managed to stay afloat and gained racing acclaim, with Barnato participating in the Le Train Bleu race (he drove in traffic from Cannes to Calais and finished first). Consequently, the model became known as the Blue Train Bentley. Moreover, further victories would be obtained by Bentley in the famous endurance race 24 hours of le Mans, the British carmaker emerging victorious for four consecutive times, between 1927 and 1930.

Until entering under the Rolls Royce tutelage, Bentley fitted a variety of engines on their cars: from the classic 3L and 4.5 Blower Bentley engine to the 6L or massive 8L mechanical heart in the 30's. Before parting ways with the Rolls Royce parent company in 1998 and moving to VW grounds, Bentley had greatly improved their offers and technological improvements, especially after becoming a separate car line again during the 80's. Models such as the type R, S and Continental represented only a small fraction of what would come in the following years. Later models included the beautiful Azure convertible, the Turbos Sport R and S models and the competitive Brooklands.

Starting with 1998, German carmaker VW Group took over as Bentley's parent company in a profitable partnership with BMW. The agreement between the two parts stated that VW would make both Bentley and Rolls Royce cars until 2002, when the rights to manufacture Rolls Royce vehicles would pass entirely to BMW. Until 2003, BMW was a constant supplier of engines for both car lines. Soon after BMW's withdrawal, the company launched a new model that would become even more popular than the Azure: the Continental GT. In fact, demands were so numerous that Bentley was reacquainted with the situation form the 20's, when it was unable to meet demands. The latest models from the British carmaker include the 2005 Continental Flying Spur saloon, the 2006 Azure convertible and it's Continental GT counterpart, and the 2008 Brooklands and GT Speed Coupe.
