There are plenty of high-end luxury sedans, but there are few four-doors like the 2016 Audi S8. It packs an incredible turbocharged V8 that you'll never get tired of tapping into, and an interior that you won't want to leave. If you can afford the buy-in, this is a luxury sedan that we think is worth every penny. Read on to see why.

That the 2016 Audi S8 will outrun a Corvette to 60 mph says something about the potency of this modern performance sedan. That it rides as calmly and quietly as the sedate A8 on which it's based says something about Audi.

The S8's dominant trait is no doubt its 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 engine, which provides 520 horsepower in the "base" model or a truly astonishing 605 hp in the new S8 Plus. We've clocked the regular S8 at just 3.6 seconds from zero to 60 mph, and Audi says the S8 Plus should be a few tenths quicker. But the all-wheel-drive S8 represents far more than just an engine swap. Adjustable air springs and dampers coupled with military-grade steering precision shrink this large sedan to fit all but the tightest roads, yet the ride remains eminently civilized, as noted. It's this masterful all-around capability that sets the S8 apart.

There are competitors, most of which are bigger. When it comes to performance and driving reward, the 2016 Porsche Panamera is the S8's toughest rival. Offering multiple engines, two wheelbases and the option of all-wheel drive, it's a serious sedan. The supersized player in the segment is the 2016 Mercedes-AMG S63. The S-Class offers almost 7 additional inches between its wheels, which is worth considering in a class that's as much about comfort as it is performance. We also recommend the 2016 Jaguar XJR, which packs a stirring 550-hp supercharged V8. But any rival will have its hands full against the exceptional 2016 Audi S8.

The 2016 Audi S8 is a high-performance full-size luxury sedan offered in a base and Plus trim levels. The standard A8 sedan offers a long-wheelbase variant (A8L), but the S8 comes solely with the short wheelbase.

Standard features on the S8 include 21-inch alloy wheels, summer tires, a sport-tuned adaptive air suspension, full LED exterior lighting (headlights, foglights, taillights and turn signals), automatic high-beam control, a top-view parking camera system with front and rear parking sensors, a sunroof, auto-dimming and power-folding mirrors, a power trunklid, soft-close power doors, automatic headlights and windshield wipers, keyless ignition and entry, diamond-stitched leather upholstery, four-zone automatic climate control, 22-way multicontour front seats (with massage, heating and ventilation functions), a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, and power rear side and rear window sunshades. Audi Drive Select allows tuning of the steering weight, suspension, throttle and transmission calibrations.

Infotainment features include a driver information center with a 7-inch screen between the gauges, a head-up display, Audi's Multi Media Interface ( MMI) infotainment system with voice control and handwriting-recognition technology and an 8-inch central screen, a navigation system, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and a 14-speaker, 630-watt Bose surround-sound audio system with a CD player, DVD player, satellite radio, HD radio and an iPod interface. Also standard are Audi Connect (including enhanced web-based navigation and information services, plus mobile Wi-Fi capability), blind-spot monitoring and a basic collision mitigation system that includes pre-collision preparation measures and secondary automatic braking after a collision has been detected.

The Plus model adds a more powerful version of the V8 engine, different 21-inch wheels with slightly wider tires, sportier suspension and steering tuning, a rear lip spoiler and a black Alcantara (synthetic suede) headliner.

Some S8 options are grouped into packages. The Driver Assistance package features adaptive cruise control (with stop-and-go functionality) and a more advanced collision mitigation system (Pre Sense Plus) with automatic pre-collision braking and active lane keeping assist. The Cold Weather package includes a heated steering wheel, heated rear seats and a rear seat pass-through. The Full Leather package extends the already generous standard leather upholstery, while the Audi Design Selection packages include the Full Leather package and bundle unique trim elements into cohesive interior treatments.

Offered solely on the S8 Plus are a Black Optic package (providing various gloss-black exterior accents and darkened taillights) and a Dynamic package that includes ceramic brake rotors, a carbon-fiber rear lip spoiler, a sport exhaust and a top-speed increase to 190 mph.

Individual option highlights include different wheel designs, a rear-seat entertainment system (with dual screens and an additional MMI control panel), night-vision assist (with pedestrian and animal detection) and a 19-speaker, 1,400-watt Bang & Olufsen surround-sound audio system.

Powering the 2016 Audi S8 is a twin-turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 in one of two states of tune. The base S8 is rated at 520 horsepower and 517 pound-feet of torque. The S8 Plus raises its game to 605 hp and 517 lb-ft of torque (553 lb-ft in brief "overboost" spurts when you floor it). Either way, an eight-speed automatic transmission drives all four wheels through a standard all-wheel-drive system.

In instrumented testing, the base S8 accelerated from zero to 60 mph in 3.6 seconds, an extremely quick time for any car, let alone one this large. Even so, the S8 somehow manages a respectable EPA fuel economy estimate of 19 mpg combined (15 city/25 highway). Only a select few cars are as fast and frugal as Audi's largest performance sedan.

Standard safety features for the 2016 Audi S8 include antilock disc brakes, stability control, front and rear parking sensors, a top- and corner-view camera, blind-spot monitoring, collision alert (which detects potential collisions and engages certain passenger protection features), front seat side airbags, rear seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, front knee airbags, and Pre Sense Basic and Rear (providing pre-crash vehicle preparation and post-crash automatic braking).

Optional via the Driver Assistance package is a collision mitigation system (Pre Sense Plus) that monitors traffic and alerts the driver if it detects a potential collision. It can then apply the brakes (to a standstill when the vehicle speed is below 20 mph) if a collision seems imminent and the driver hasn't reacted. Lane keeping assist is also included in the package.

Night-vision assist is also available as a stand-alone option.

In brake testing, an S8 equipped with the standard summer tires and cast-iron brakes came to a stop from 60 mph in 105 feet. This is a very good distance for an elite sedan, though the Audi's brake pedal feel doesn't inspire as much confidence as some rivals. The pedal travel is surprisingly long, and the pedal itself is surprisingly soft. In a performance sedan of this caliber, we'd expect a shorter-travel brake pedal with a firmer feel. Though we haven't tested them yet, the Dynamic Package's ceramic brakes may feel and perform better.

Forget big-sedan standards. The 2016 Audi S8 is blindingly fast by any standard. The turbocharged V8 spools up so quickly that you almost forget it's a forced-induction powerplant. The eight-speed automatic transmission heightens the effect by quickly and seamlessly cycling through the ratios, though the trade-off is a lack of smoothness in some situations. Use the manual paddle shifters to select gears yourself and you'll be rewarded with throttle blips on downshifts. We also like the electronically adjustable settings (Audi Drive Select) for the chassis and engine calibration, as they provide a useful degree of driver customization. The V8 engine sounds mean yet subdued when you put the pedal to the floor, and when you're cruising along at highway speeds, it settles into near silence.

With its standard all-wheel-drive system, well-tuned suspension and crisp steering response, the S8 handles like a smaller, lighter sedan. It's only around truly tight turns that you'll be reminded of the car's substantial size and weight, but even so, the S8 has the reflexes and grip to keep up with sports cars on challenging roads. In low-speed city traffic, the standard air suspension's ability to filter out harshness borders on magical, especially considering that the Audi S8 wears low-profile, 21-inch summer performance tires. In Comfort mode, you could easily fool people into thinking you were driving a regular A8. Until you open the throttle, that is.

Much like the A8 on which it's based, the S8 has an excellent cabin design. Top-grade materials unite with expert craftsmanship and assembly to form one of the finest interiors in the automotive world. Comfort is exceptional, thanks to 22-way-adjustable front seats with heating/ventilation, massage and memory functions. Rear seat passengers won't feel left out either, as there's a wealth of head- and legroom for taller adults — although some buyers would surely prefer more rear legroom.

Audi's MMI interface is a boon for technophiles, as it controls a multitude of functions with its high-resolution screen and slick, knob-based control layout. The menus might take a little more getting used to than some other high-end infotainment systems, but once you're acclimated, complicated tasks can be executed with ease. Also included is a remote touchpad that allows you to trace letters with your fingertips as a way of inputting or finding phone, music or navigation data. The software behind this system is starting to feel a little dated, though, as the navigation system isn't able to read street names aloud, while the standard Wi-Fi is only capable of 3G speeds (versus 4G LTE in some other Audis). The price of the premium Bang & Olufsen surround-sound system may cause some initial sticker shock, but discerning ears will note that it is one of the finest audio systems on the market.

The one glaring fault in the S8 is its lack of trunk space. At 14.2 cubic feet, its cargo capacity is less than some midsize sedans and well below what's available in similarly sized rivals.

The 2016 Audi A8 full-size luxury sedan is as comfortable showing off its handling prowess as it is its abundant luxury credentials. The comfortable but confident ride is due in large part to the car’s adaptive air suspension. Activated by a push of a button, the driver can opt for smooth and silent Comfort mode, a sport-oriented Dynamic setting or simply place the system in the Automatic mode and allow the suspension to automatically adjust according to road conditions and driver input. The A8’s 4.0-liter turbocharged V8 provides seemingly unending bursts of power, and all of its functions, even the fuel-saving engine stop/start feature, work seamlessly. Nimble for its size and always eager to please, the enthusiast-oriented 2016 Audi S8 sacrifices very little of the A8’s luxurious nature, yet returns a much more enjoyable driving experience.

TDI CLEAN DIESEL ENGINEIn the land of Audi, diesel is no longer a “dirty” word. The A8’s 3.0-liter turbodiesel fires right up, emits none of the clatter and black smoke associated with diesels of old and offers up ample torque with fuel economy reaching 36 mpg on the highway.GOOGLE MAPS INTERFACEAudi’s navigation is second to none. Need proof? Check out the cool Google Earth 3D satellite imagery brought to life by a brilliant 8-inch touch screen. It’s practically like piloting the starship Enterprise.

Step inside Audi’s 2016 A8's 5-passenger cabin and you might think you're in a private jet. Immediately noticeable is a gear selector reminiscent of an airplane's throttle lever. Above are two tiers of knobs, buttons and a touch pad to control climate, audio and navigation functions. All are mostly simple to operate. The A8's cabin boasts the requisite leather and wood expected in a car of this caliber, and attention to detail borders on obsessive. The front seats fit a variety of bodies, and rear-seat legroom is impressive on the long-wheelbase models, which also offer a pair of seats with massaging function.

Audi's flagship sedan is stately but mostly reserved, eschewing the fluidity of, say, the latest S-Class for a more conservative shape. We say "mostly" reserved save for the front, which is distinguished by Audi's signature LED strip underneath the headlights and a massive, trapezoidal grille. All 2016 Audi A8 luxury sedans come with LED headlights and a cleanly sculpted hood. The S8's standard length comes in at just over 202 inches, while the A8’s stretched wheelbase is roughly five inches longer. The performance-oriented S8 is distinguished by wide quad tailpipes, 21-inch wheels, new side sills and rear diffusor.

As is par for the course among full-size luxury sedans, the Audi’s A8 luxury sedan for 2016 comes with a long list of standard features. Among the highlights are leather interior, 18-way power-operated and heated front seats, 14-speaker Bose audio system, navigation, dual-zone climate control and sunroof. Every A8 also comes with a 6-month subscription to Audi connect, which offers in-car Wi-Fi connectivity. Quattro – Audi's term for its all-wheel-drive system – is also standard. In addition to a more powerful V8 engine, S8 models come with a sport differential and larger front brakes.

Many of the 2016 A8's options are bundled into packages and include a wealth of creature comforts and some gee-whiz tech. Among the former are massaging front seats with ventilation and 22-way adjustment, higher-grade leather trim, heated rear seats and heated steering wheel. In the latter category Audi's executive sedan offers adaptive cruise control, lane-departure mitigation, and a night-vision assistant with pedestrian detection. Rear-seat passengers can be treated to a DVD entertainment system with twin 10-inch rear screens, while all can enjoy the sounds of a 19-speaker/1,400-watt Bang & Olufsen audio system.

Three gasoline engines and one diesel are available for the 2016 Audi A8, all connected to a smooth 8-speed automatic transmission. On the gasoline front, the A8 3.0T uses a supercharged V6, the 4.0T a turbocharged V8, and the A8 W12 a 6.3-liter 12-cylinder. The diesel uses a 3.0-liter turbodiesel V6, has a stated 0-60-mph time of 6.3 seconds and is rated up to 36 mpg. All of those engines except the W12 have fuel-saving start/stop technology. The star athlete is the normal-wheelbase S8 with its 4.0-liter turbo V8 tuned to make 520 horsepower. With a blistering 0-60-mph time of 3.9 seconds, the 2016 S8 will embarrass many sports cars.3.0-liter supercharged V6333 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm325 lb-ft of torque @ 2,900 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/29 mpg3.0-liter turbodiesel V6240 horsepower @ 3,550 rpm428 lb-ft of torque @ 1,750 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 24/36 mpg4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8435 horsepower @ 5,100 rpm444 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/29 mpg 6.3-liter W12500 horsepower @ 6,200 rpm463 lb-ft of torque @ 4,750 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/22 mpg4.0-liter twin-turbocharged V8 (Audi S8)520 horsepower @ 5,800 rpm481 lb-ft of torque @ 1,700 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/27 mpg

The 2016 Audi A8 luxury sedan has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) beginning just over $ 82,500 for a 3.0T. The diesel starts just under $ 84,000, while the V8 pushes the price just over $ 91,000. The S8 debuts just shy of $ 116,000. The W12 is the most expensive A8, starting over $ 140,000. The Audi A8's starting price is less than that of the Mercedes-Benz S-Class. It is slightly higher than those of the BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS and Jaguar XJ, and significantly more than the Hyundai Equus and Kia K900, which start in the $ 60,000 range. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for their new A8. Long-term, the A8's value is expected to hold up better than those of the BMW 7 Series and Jaguar XJ, but not as well as the Lexus LS.

Audi S8 Overview and History

The Audi S8 remains the largest performance sedan in Audi's 2014 model year range, but just a year since its launch it has received a cosmetic makeover.
Shower gels and generally beauty-product brands have a way of appealing to customers by thrusting desire through sensorial-related names and presentation of their offers. Olfactory sense-stroking balms and soothing cashmere-touch night cream-approaches are basically the most commonly used methods of conveying beauty and easy customer-access to deeply-rooted sensorial pampering, unless beauty is forged out of steel and thousands of accurately engineered parts.

Automobiles undoubtedly fall into the latter category, and what better way of striking at least one of the remaining three senses if not building an image of a mighty engine roar or purr of a loyal cylinder sextet cradled under the bonnet of an Audi car? Audi translates as 'listen' from latin and besides expressing an unanimously accepted passion of the motorist, that of listening to the engine as if it were a never before heard dissertation on mechanics blended with boisterous 'deux ex machina' comments and demonstrations, it also marks the birth of Audi following Horch's demise, the previous name of the company that can be traced back to 1899.

Its founder, August Horch was forced out of his own company in 1909 due to trademark infringements, 8 years after the first automobile had rolled out the gates of the plant in Zwickau, Germany. After having been dispensed of, Horch started his own company under the same name which led to a fair share of trouble that came to an end as soon as Horch called for a meeting at the apartment of Franz Fikentscher to discuss the matter and come up with a new name for the company. Franz's son who was studying latin at the time was the true deliverer of the name that would later became synonymous with luxury and quality. As 'Horch' means listen in Old German, the boy simply made a switched the name with its latin corespondent, 'audi', sparking enthusiasm into the 'audience' that quickly adopted the name.

Audi's start o the German market was high lighted by the appearance of 2.6 liter engine powered vehicles followed by a series of more powerful ones, such as 4.7 L and the gas-gulping 5.7 L. Having gotten to see his company grow wings, Horch left in in 1920, four years before Audi's first 6 cylinder model was built. In 19128, Audi was acquired By Jorgen Rasmussen, owner of rival company DKW.

A few years later, a merger between Audi, DKW, Horch and Wanderer occurred and thus, the Auto Union was formed in 1932. Those times called for a new badge and the four interlocked rings were born as a sign of unity and identity of the newly formed auto-conglomerate. Technological improvement became a top priority that first took shape during the Second World War when an armored car was produced for the German Army.

However, all the progress would soon be severely slowed down and even halted at times due to heavy bombings. Moreover, as as soon as the conflict had come to an end, Zwickau had been caught in the soviet occupation zone that would become The German Democratic Republic in 1949. Not only that the company's activity was in jeopardy but the Auto Union had also broken up and the Union had to be restarted n new grounds, in Ingolstadt, Bavaria.

Though sluggish at first, the newly Ingolstadt based factory would attract many of the former workers and the construction of two-stroke engines would be resumed in a way similar to that of Zwickau. By 1958, Daimler-Benz had already acquired a whopping 87% of the Auto Union but its investment quickly became property of Volkswagen, the company having bought the factory and  and the brands in 1964.

Soon after the change of ownership, two-stroke engines would be eliminated in favor of the more popular and more customer appealing four-stroke ones. DKW, the leading brand of the Union at the time failed as a brand despite of the changes  it had made and Volkswagen decided to resurrect Audi. The former DKW built model was rebranded as an Audi one and was the springboard for the make of later models such as the 60, 75 and 80.

After a second merger with the Stuttgart based car-producer NSU by 1970, Audi established itself as a reliable growing brand that would later break the German boundaries and expand to new markets, including the North American one where it encountered difficulties following the release of a biased report that portrayed the car as suffering form 'unintended acceleration'. This was caused by the close placement of the brake and acceleration pedals, right next to each other. Shortly after the report was released , an abrupt decline in sales was registered that was countered only years later with the 1996 release of the A4 model.

Joining a row of successful car-producers, Audi has also garnered acclaim on the racing track with several World Record holdings, including one for Top Speed Endurance. Audi is currently enjoying a privileged position and large market share and is predicted to reach the production threshold of 1 million units by the end of this year.

2014 Audi S8
"The S8 is a wolf in sheepskin cover!"
I've owned my fair share of high performance, luxury cars from Porsche, BMW and Mercedes. The Audi S8 is without a doubt, the fastest and most comfortable / luxurious of them all. From the messaging seats to the incredible pull of all-wheel drive powered by a twin turbo 500+ hp engine, it just doesn't get any better. Drive one and you'll agree.
