Overall, the 2015 Acura RLX covers the luxury sedan basics pretty well, but otherwise doesn't do much to distinguish itself.

The 2015 Acura RLX isn't the most well-known choice for a midsize luxury sedan, but it scores pretty high marks for what truly matters in this segment. Its interior rivals a large sedan's for roominess, as demonstrated by the backseat, which has plenty of legroom for adults to stretch out. Said interior also boasts a long list of standard equipment and can be done up in soft, perforated leather upholstery and genuine wood trim. If technology is your thing, Acura offers the RLX with a smart mix of available features (we're quite fond of the optional 14-speaker Krell sound system). As a bonus, RLX pricing is also typically a bit less than the competition.

Acura introduced the new RLX last year, starting with the base front-wheel-drive model that has a 3.5-liter V6 engine rated at 310 horsepower. A Sport Hybrid model with all-wheel drive, more horsepower and even better fuel economy was supposed to arrive soon after, but its introduction was delayed. As such, Acura says the Sport Hybrid will be sold during the 2015 calendar year but still as a 2014 model. For now, we're expecting that the 2015 RLX will be the base-model only. Alas, we're more fond of the Sport Hybrid than we are of the base model. Performance and handling from the base model are uninspiring, and the ride quality isn't as compliant and smooth as we expect for this class.

These aren't major drawbacks, but they factor in for our .com "B" rating of the RLX. If you're shopping for a midsize luxury sedan, we think the 2015 Audi A6 is a better all-around package, while the Lexus GS 350 looks and feels more special inside. The new 2015 Hyundai Genesis sedan is also worth a look, as it offers many of the same tech features at a lower price point. Higher up on the price scale, the engaging BMW 5 Series and prestigious Mercedes-Benz E-Class are more customizable for features and have more powertrain options. Overall, the base RLX covers the luxury sedan basics pretty well, but otherwise doesn't do much to distinguish itself.

The 2015 Acura RLX comes in five main trim levels (most are referred to as packages.) The Sport Hybrid variant will retain its designation as a 2014 model throughout the new model year.

The base RLX comes well-equipped with 18-inch alloy wheels, LED headlights, a sunroof, keyless ignition and entry, tri-zone automatic climate control, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leatherette upholstery (premium vinyl), heated eight-way power front seats (with four-way power lumbar), driver memory settings and a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel. The list of standard electronics includes an upper 8-inch display, a lower 7-inch touchscreen display, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a 10-speaker ELS sound system with a CD player, HD and satellite radios, a USB/iPod interface, smartphone app integration (with Pandora and Aha Internet radio integration) and an auxiliary audio jack.

The RLX with the Navigation package adds navigation capability to the 8-inch screen at the top of the dash plus voice controls, AcuraLink telematics and additional smartphone app integration. In addition, a modified climate control system uses input from the GPS receiver to automatically adjust cabin temperature on the side of the car that is exposed to direct sunlight.

Choosing the Technology option package bundles 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic wipers, power-retractable mirrors, a blind-spot monitoring system, noise-reducing acoustic glass, leather upholstery and a 14-speaker ELS sound system. You can further upgrade the audio quality with the premium 14-speaker Krell Audio package. This package also includes a power rear sunshade and manual rear door sunshades.

The available Advance package adds adaptive cruise control, a collision mitigation system with automatic braking, a lane-keeping assist system, front and rear parking sensors, auto-dimming outside mirrors, ventilated front seats, heated rear seats and a heated steering wheel.

The 2015 Acura RLX is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 engine that puts out 310 hp and 272 pound-feet of torque. Front-wheel drive and a six-speed automatic transmission are standard.

In testing, a 2015 RLX with the Advance package went from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, which is average for a midsize luxury sedan. The EPA rates the RLX at 24 mpg combined (20 city/31 highway), which is essentially average for a six-cylinder luxury sedan.

Standard safety features on the 2015 Acura RLX include antilock disc brakes, stability and traction control, front seat side-impact airbags, full-length side curtain airbags and a driver side knee airbag.

A rearview camera is standard, but you have to spring for the Advance option package to get front and rear parking sensors. That package also includes lane-departure warning, lane-keeping assist and a frontal collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking. A blind-spot monitoring system is included on models equipped with the Technology and higher option packages.

In testing, the RLX managed a 60-0-mph braking distance of 120 feet, an average number for this class.

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has performed its battery of crash tests on the RLX, resulting DrivingThe 2015 Acura RLX's V6 engine is quiet and smooth and pairs well with the six-speed automatic. It's sufficiently powerful and should suit most buyers just fine, though rival sedans with turbocharged or supercharged six-cylinders feel noticeably quicker. The RLX doesn't ride with the same composure as other sedans in this class. Especially when fitted with the 19-inch wheels, it feels harsh when driving over rough patches at low speeds, while the ride on the highway can be bouncy. Only on truly smooth pavement does the RLX ride like a luxury sedan. Take it around a few turns, and the big Acura will be steady but not particularly athletic or communicative through its steering feel.

The 2015 Acura RLX's V6 engine is quiet and smooth and pairs well with the six-speed automatic.

From the moment you set foot inside the passenger cabin of the 2015 Acura RLX, you can't help but notice how spacious the place feels. But the real surprise is a backseat with as much as 3 inches more legroom than you'll find in competing sedans. Though it is perhaps the most adult-friendly rear seat in the category, taller passengers may wish for a tad more headroom and more room under the front seats for their feet. The front seats will be fine for most trips, but we've found long-distance comfort to be lacking.

The interior does get points for both its array of the latest technology and its ease of use. The available navigation system is a good example of this intuitive operation, allowing you to enter destinations using the large control knob, the 7-inch touchscreen below the 8-inch map display or by voice commands. But there are a couple of negatives here, including graphics that aren't as sharp as those in other luxury models and several basic functions, such as seat heater controls, that require you to press a potentially distracting number of virtual buttons to access.

Out back, the RLX offers a trunk with 15.3 cubic feet of cargo room. Unfortunately, the lack of fold-down rear seatbacks means the space can't be expanded, though there is a center pass-through opening that can accommodate longer items like skis.

Many executive cars tout an edgy, performance-oriented side that can vanquish freeway onramps and speed past slower traffic with delight. Truth is, most will serve as cushy commuters for busy professionals concerned more about numbers on a spreadsheet than those reflecting 0-60-mph times. Put in this perspective, the 2015 Acura RLX performs brilliantly. For trips across the state or jaunts to the market, the RLX is quiet and solid. Its suspension quells road imperfections and its 3.5-liter V6 is strong and smooth. That's not to say the RLX can't be quick on its feet. Throw it in Sport mode and Acura's luxury sedan raises its pulse noticeably, shifting gears at a higher rpm for quicker acceleration. When using the optional Lane Keeping Assist and Adaptive Cruise Control, the RLX can practically drive itself (more on that below).

LANE-KEEPING ASSIST SYSTEMThis optional feature is further proof that we are getting closer to autonomous cars. If you drift from a lane, the RLX has the ability to steer itself back in line. More vehicles are featuring this safety technology, but it works particularly well in Acuras.KRELL AUDIO PACKAGEThere's only one car that currently offers a Krell audio system, and it's the Acura RLX. Krell is among the crème de la crème of high-end audio, producing the kind of home gear that costs tens of thousands of dollars. Here the wondrous 14-speaker system is a relative bargain.

The 2015 RLX's 5-passenger cabin easily lives up to luxury-car standards thanks to quality materials, a slick dual-screen information system in the center dash and thoughtful touches such as power-operated steering-wheel adjustment. The RLX is also roomy. Rear-seat passengers are treated to a copious 38.8 inches of legroom. Even with that stretch-out room, trunk capacity is still roughly 15 cubic feet, ample for most duties. Detractors include touch-based controls of functions such as fan speed and air flow, which would be easier to use with traditional buttons or switches. Hybrid RLX models substitute the gear lever for a series of buttons.

Design is always subjective, but our eyes perceive the RLX as a bit plain. A more optimistic adjective would be "understated." However you say it, Acura's luxury sedan is distinct in its indistinction. That's not to say effort wasn't spent putting some pizazz into this premium sedan. Along the sides is tasteful body sculpting, and in front the RLX features headlights that house a whopping 10 LED lighting elements that we're told (and believe) improve visibility for the driver. Though roughly the same length as the RL it replaced, the RLX is nearly two inches wider, which helps facilitate a slightly roomier interior.

Spend even the least on a base 2015 Acura RLX and you'll get a standard V6 engine, 10-speaker Acura/ELS audio system with hard-drive media storage and USB input, Bluetooth streaming, tri-zone climate control, moonroof, 18-inch wheels and the Precision All-Wheel Steer system. You'll still have to pay extra for real leather instead of Leatherette, but the front seats are heated and feature 12-way power adjustment. RLX hybrid models include standard all-wheel drive, a head-up display that projects information on the screen in front of the driver, and 19-inch wheels.

Most major options and amenities for the 2015 RLX are bundled into packages. The RLX with Navigation adds the obvious, along with the AcuraLink The Next Generation system that interfaces with mobile phones to provide vehicle tracking, concierge service and more. The Technology Package adds leather interior, blind-spot monitoring, a 14-speaker Acura/ELS audio system and high-performance tires. The Krell package brings that euphonious audiophile sound system plus power rear sunshade and manually operated rear side-door sunshades. Topping the list is the Advance package that includes adaptive cruise control, the lane-keeping feature, heated and ventilated front seats and an automatic emergency braking system.

Two versions of the RLX are available, each quite different in how it puts power to the wheels. Standard 2015 RLX models are front-wheel drive and are powered by a 3.5-liter V6 that makes 310 horsepower and is equipped with a 6-speed automatic transmission. New is the RLX Sport Hybrid SH-AWD. A mouthful for sure, those letters stand for Super Handling All-Wheel Drive. The RLX hybrid uses the same gasoline V6 as the regular version, plus three electric motors. Two of them are used in place of a traditional driveshaft and differential to power the rear wheels, while the third motor supplements engine torque to the front wheels and uses regenerative braking energy to feed a lithium-ion battery pack. Acura's luxury hybrid further stands out with a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.3.5-liter V6310 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm272 lb-ft of torque @ 4,500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/31 mpg3.5-liter V6 + 3-motor hybrid 377 horsepower (combined)341 lb-ft of torque (combined)EPA city/highway fuel economy: 28/32 mpg

The 2015 Acura RLX has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) that starts just under $ 50,000 and climbs to the low-$ 60,000 range when loaded. Hybrid versions of the RLX start around $ 60,000 and move up to the mid-$ 60,000 range with the Advance Package. At its starting price, the RLX is comparable to the entry prices of rivals like the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes-Benz E-Class, Infiniti Q70 and Jaguar XF. Four-cylinder versions of the Cadillac CTS and Audi A6 begin a few thousand lower, and the Lexus GS also undercuts the starting price of the RLX. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for their new RLX. Resale value is not a strong suit for Acura's flagship, with it predicted to lag leaders like the Lexus GS.

Acura RLX Overview and History

The Acura RLX represents the flagship sedan by Honda's Acura brand, which debuted at the 2012 Los Angeles Auto Show as a 2014 model.
The Japanese  seem to have all the traits of engineering-passionate mythical phoenix birds descendants. After having risen from the ashes of the Hiroshima and Nagasaki Second World War nuclear bombings, the island dwellers leaped into a full-scale both intrinsic and outer reconstruction process that would later catapult them as a leading force on the international auto-market. 1986 was the year when Japanese engineers unleashed their newly formed Acura division of 4 wheeled katanas against the frail armies of western technology.

Soon after the attack was initiated, early models of Acura vehicles quickly took over vast US car market shares on the road to victory. The spark triggered a mass techno-religious conversion among car buyers who quickly turned to the new Eastern alternatives - who have accurately hit the niche American builders had failed to fill: the luxury market.

Acura was born as the rich child of the elder Honda father-brand and quickly became the driving force that would change customers' perception of Asian motorized artisanship. The package Acura delivered to the US after Honda had spent 10 ears of research consisted of only two models: the Legend and the Integra. The road-runner pair had enough success overseas to compel competing Asian brands into sending their own troops to the US. Thus, Toyota sent a wave of hostile novelty and improvements with their newly created luxurious Lexus brigade and Nissan joined the party by flaunting a new shiny infant-brand, the Infiniti.

Although Acura had already managed to integrate the legend of better Asian automobiles into US consumer minds through the V6-powered Legend sedan and the sleek, sharp Integra, it was yet to display all of its arsenal. As soon as the 90's came, four years after the brand had reached American territory, it delivered a crushing blow to luxurious-sports car competitors: the NSX. An acronym for  a science-fueled battle cry that translated as 'New Sports eXperimental', the NSX quickly became a cheaper and fun alternative to costly European counterparts such as the ones delivered by German and Italian manufacturers like BMW and road-cruising and racing supremacists Ferrari.

Not only did the NSX strike a weak spot, but it also garnered appreciation as being the first series car made entirely of aluminum. Despite its early success, Acura entered some mid 90's dark ages as a result of reported poor design choices and failure to rejuvenate the already existing line of models. By 1996, the Legend and Integra names were dropped and replaced with parsimonious alphanumeric tags as part of a new naming nomenclature that would drag the entire brand to a mild maelstrom of confusion. Subsequent model improvements and quasi-subtle Lexus design forgery plunged Acura into temporary platitude, despite its engine power upgrades to more than 200 hp on 1996's 3.5 RL - the reinvented Legend.

The knockdown effect would not last for long though, as the beginning of the 21st century brought Acura to a fresh start with the introduction of several redesigned models, such as the 1999 Acura 3.2 TL, engineered as a challenger against competition's wheeler-troopers, such as the Lexus ES, Infiniti l30 and the the BMW 3-series. Despite having failed to dominate its foes, the 3.2 earned much acclaim due to its consumer attractiveness that was the result of a balanced blend of luxury, sportiness and competitive pricing.

In a matter of years, Acura took on SUV territory with the MDX and continued to sustain the rise of its machines with new accomplishments and faster, better units at the exiting factory gates. In fact, Acura is currently leading a full-scale take-over, with the brand having reached Chinese markets only two years ago and plans for breaking into the former USSR compound by the end of 2008.

2015 Acura RLX Consumer Reviews

Advance Package 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
Great Car
Just to give a little backround, my last two cars were a Lexus GS and an Acura RL. I did not like my Lexus at all and got rid of it after less than two years. I had that Lexus in the shop 7 times in those two years for various problems. Up until then, I had pretty much owned only Toyota or Lexus. In 2008, I decided to get the Acura RL to replace the Lexus GS. The Acura RL treated me very well for 6 years until I gave it to my daughter. When it was time to get a new car, I considered many different luxury brands but kept coming back to Acura. So far, I have 24,000 miles on the car. I can honestly say, this is the best car I have ever owned. I look forward to driving it everyday. There were a couple of recalls which were easily taken care of...I was not having problems before the recalls. If I had to do it again, I would not hesitate to get the RLX. I would love to have the hybrid version but it was not available when I bought my car. I had a deposit for one with the dealer but after waiting a year, they finally told me they weren't sure when they would available. I guess that would be my one complaint with Acura...they had a predicted release date for the hybrid and it kept getting delayed and there was no information available as to if and when they were going to come out with the car.

Advance Package 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
Luxury Sedan for everyday use!
I got this car back in April 2015. I have 9k miles on it now. Car drives without any issues whatsoever. When driving around 70 miles on the freeway car gets about 34mpg, even though by the book it is 31mpg. Mixed driving I get 26-27mpg, which is great considering how big car is. Car is definitely not the softest on the planet, since I saw few people complain about it, which is true I agree with that, however car is luxury/sport and some sport cars are not the most soft cars out-there. I really like a lot of standard options such as LED Headlights, P-AWS rear wheel steering technology 19" luxury wheels, acoustic windshield and front glass and etc., This car is definitely worth getting considering car cost a lot less than competition with similar options, less by about 15k. Also retail value always nice on Acuras and reliability is good if you think to keep car for longer than 5 years. In my opinion car looks much better than Lexus GS and boring looking Audi A6. Acura looks very beautiful, one of my favorite looking car in it's class.

Technology Package 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl 6A)
Great car
This is a wonderful car- my 4th Acura (2 TSX, 1 TL) Interior surpasses anything I looked at and the technology that comes standard is exceptional. Could be a bit sharper on the outside but still gets lots of looks and certainly beats the Lexus GS. And, with the great discounting going on, would be hard to beat the value.

stay away from RLX
Purchased new RLX in 2014, what a mistake. It has had three recalls and now an engine noise has developed which Acura mechanics can not figure out. Audio tapes have been sent to Acura Engineering and they are stumped. I intend to get rid of it as soon as it comes back from shop (two weeks) Bad news trade in value is now $ 35,000 for a one year old car with 12,000 miles for which I paid $ 52,000. Go with Lexus or Infinity and save yourself trouble

"Meh. Poor reliability and electronics"
Acura sells less than 2,000 of these cars each year. Beware if your car sat on the dealers lot. Mine sat and I have battery issues that required multiple dealer visits. Replaced battery and cables at 3,000 miles and continue to have problems. Error message says unsafe to drive and neither dealer nor Acura know how to fix. Electronics are poor. Voice commands are usually wrong so I use Google maps instead. Typical of Honda, paint quality is poor. I have owned this car 18 months and roof, hood and trunk show signs of paint fading like Accords. Don’t understand why Honda engineers haven’t figured out their paint quality is poor given the abundance of their newer cars which need repainting. I like the styling. Beautiful interior. My car is white with Seacoast and I get a a lot of compliments. Unfortunately it is not reliable and I will go back to MB. Acura is poor quality and depreciation is extreme. Poor value and quality. Put you money into a Benz C Class. Higher attention to detail and will retain value.

"Welcome addition to the family"
We are an Acura family and have owned Acuras since 2007. We have a MDX a TL Type S, and the latest addition the RLX. We have owned this car for over a year and I still find myself just gazing and looking back at the car. The lane keep assistance and the adaptive cruise control is very impressive. Really helps during tired driving. The engine is powerful and adequate for the size of the car. The technology is easy to figure out and once everything is setup it all works seamlessly.
