More than a retro styling exercise, the 2007 Ford Mustang provides compelling performance in all areas and offers rear-drive-V8 enthusiasts a tempting price tag.

Now in its ninth generation, the Mustang has survived oil crises, tightening emissions standards, corporate budget cuts and even the SUV craze. It's the only one of the original pony cars from the 1960s to live on into the 21st century with no interruption in production. The 2007 Ford Mustang represents a deft blend of classic American muscle car styling cues and modern design. Whether you choose a V6 or V8, a coupe or convertible, this is one of the best values on the market for consumers seeking traditional rear-wheel-drive performance.

Last redesigned for 2005, the Ford Mustang wears its heritage like a badge of honor. The canted nose -- with its big grille, round headlights and on GTs, grille-mounted foglights -- recalls the 1967-'69 Mustangs, while the side sculpting, taillights and the coupe's fastback roof line recall ponies of the 1965 vintage. Triangular side windows recall Carroll Shelby's work when he transformed the 1965 Mustang 2+2 fastback into the Shelby GT350. Naturally, Ford offers a wide array of color options and appearance packages for buyers who want to go beyond the stock look.

Inside, the retro motif continues with a dual-hooded dash, round-hub steering wheel and old-school gauges. Fortunately, these elements are neatly integrated into a modern, ergonomically sound interior design. The standard interior is heavy on hard plastic, though, so many buyers end up adding the Interior Upgrade Package, which provides satin aluminum accents and color-changeable backlighting for the instruments -- at the press of a button, one can select from white, blue, green and orange hues.

Despite its switch to an all-new platform for 2005, the Mustang continues to use a rather basic solid-axle rear suspension design. This allows Ford to keep the pricing low, and careful tuning results in reasonably precise handling through the corners. Although the Mustang can't match the refinement of import-brand competitors like the Nissan 350Z and Mazda RX-8, its more compliant ride makes it the better bet for commuters. If you're looking for an affordable coupe or convertible that's fast and fun, yet comfortable enough to drive every day, the 2007 Ford Mustang should be on your short list of candidates.

Available as a 2+2 coupe or convertible, the 2007 Ford Mustang comes in five major trim levels: V6 Standard, V6 Deluxe, V6 Premium, GT Deluxe and GT Premium. Standard equipment on the V6 Standard includes keyless entry, 16-inch wheels, air-conditioning, power windows and mirrors, cruise control, a CD player and an auxiliary input jack. The V6 Deluxe adds alloy wheels and opens up a longer list of options. The V6 Premium adds a "Shaker 500" premium audio system with CD changer, upgraded wheels and a power driver seat. An optional Pony Package for V6 Mustangs includes firmer suspension tuning, 17-inch wheels, ABS, foglamps and a unique grille. Step up to the V8-powered GT Deluxe and you'll get all the V6 Deluxe equipment, plus ABS, a rear spoiler, foglamps, 17-inch alloys and sport seats. The GT Premium adds the Shaker 500 sound system and leather seats.

Major options include a Shaker 1000 sound system, Sirius satellite radio, and later in the model year, a DVD-based navigation system. The Comfort Package bundles heated front seats, a power front passenger seat and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Numerous interior and exterior appearance packages are also available for buyers seeking to personalize their Mustang.

Under the hood of every V6 Mustang is a 4.0-liter V6 with 210 horsepower and 240 pound-feet of torque. Step up to the GT and you'll get a 4.6-liter V8 with 300 hp and 320 lb-ft of torque. All Mustangs are rear-wheel drive and can be equipped with either a five-speed manual or a five-speed automatic transmission. A GT with a manual transmission can do zero to 60 mph in about 5.7 seconds and clear the quarter-mile in 14.3 seconds.

Four-wheel disc brakes are standard on all Mustangs. Antilock brakes and traction control are optional on the V6 models and standard on the GT. A stability-control system is not offered. Front seat-mounted side airbags for front occupants are optional on all models, but full-length head curtain airbags are not available. In NHTSA crash tests, the Ford Mustang earned a perfect five stars for front-impact protection and four stars for side-impact protection.

Acceleration is spirited with the V6, regardless of whether you choose the fun-to-shift manual or the responsive automatic. The GT provides the quintessential muscle car experience, of course, with loads of torque available right off the line and an exhaust note to match. The Mustang turns crisply and eagerly into corners with a flat, composed attitude. The brakes are powerful and control in bumpy corners is good, despite the continued use of a solid rear axle. Wind and road noise are low for a muscle car, and ride quality is surprisingly compliant.

Both the Mustang coupe and convertible offer seating for four, and average-size adults can sit in back with little problem. Interior ergonomics are vastly improved over previous-generation Mustangs, as the driver seat now puts you in the proper position to work the shifter and operate the controls. Switches and handles feel substantial, and although many of the plastics are coarse in texture, fit and finish is generally good. Retro styling abounds in little touches like the large round speedometer and tach (which feature an appropriate vintage font), dual-hooded dash and a cool steering wheel with a small round airbag hub and available metallic spokes. A striking color accent package features red leather seats, red door panel inserts and red floor mats, all set against a dark charcoal interior.

Compared to the previous Mustang convertible, this new model is superior in every way. The rigid body results in far less cowl shake (the vibration seen in the dash and windshield pillar when the wheels encounter a rough patch of pavement), giving the new Mustang a real sense of solidity. With the top down, there is moderate wind buffeting at highway speeds and, with the top in place, the Mustang's interior is surprisingly devoid of wind and road noise. The 4.0-liter V6 packs an impressive punch, even with the five-speed automatic. More importantly, the V6 returns a 28-mile per gallon highway fuel economy rating, though heavy-footed drivers may never see such a rosy figure. The GT's 300-horsepower V8 isn't very frugal with fuel, but it is the engine of choice for the boy-racer, providing blisteringly quick acceleration and a deep, burbling exhaust note that tells everyone exactly what's under the hood.

Spinner Alloy WheelsOpt for the spinner alloy wheels on the V6 model - they look great and add a real touch of nostalgia. Audio SystemThe optional Shaker 1000 six-disc MP3 player sounds amazing, though the trunk-mounted subwoofer does eat up most of the usable cargo space.

Not content to confine its retro design to the exterior, Ford also looked to the original car to inspire the Mustang convertible's instrument panel. Large round gauges feature a typeface reminiscent of the first Mustang, but offer variable color lighting for a twenty-first century touch. Seating is first rate, but some of the plastics around the console, door panels and speaker grilles feel flimsy and hard to the touch. Because the convertible was designed in conjunction with the coupe, the improved body rigidity allows for a tighter sealing roof and less body flex. The snug-fitting top offers small rear pillars for better visibility and actually provides more rear-seat headroom than the coupe.

Styling details from the original and second-generation Mustang convertibles are strongly evident, especially in the grille, rear deck and side scoops. The Mustang's convertible top folds nearly flush when retracted, giving the car a clean, powerful profile. After nearly 25 years of history-making designs that included highlights like the 1968 Mustang and lowlights like the Mustang II, the new Mustang finally has a look that appears to have evolved directly from the original.

The base Mustang convertible has a power soft top, glass rear window with defroster, five-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, four-wheel disc brakes, keyless entry, power locks, power windows, dual power mirrors, AM/FM stereo with CD and auxiliary jack, cruise control, tilt wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels and variable wipers. The GT adds sport seats, anti-lock brakes (ABS), fog lights, rocker panel moldings, 17-inch alloy wheels and traction control.

Options include leather seating, sport seats (V6), convertible top boot, Shaker 500 and 1000 sound systems with MP3-capable six-disc CD changer, five-speed automatic transmission, "My Color" instrument panel, alarm system, DVD navigation, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, front side-impact airbags, 16-inch alloy wheels with chrome spinners (V6), 17-inch Cobra wheels (GT) and a rear spoiler.

For those not bothered by the lack of V8 growl, the V6's output is more than sufficient to get your blood flowing. Originally designed for use in the Ford ExplorerSUV and Ranger pickup truck, the Mustang's V6 demonstrates a noticeable amount of vibration and harshness, and the single exhaust note just doesn't quite cut it - but the performance is remarkably good. The GT is clearly faster and more refined, and its V8 is one feature many male buyers wouldn't dream of sacrificing. Ford's three-valve per cylinder technology allows the big V8 to breathe easier, producing better low-end power without sacrificing fuel efficiency.4.0-liter V6210 horsepower @ 5250 rpm240 lb.-ft. of torque @ 3500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/28 (manual), 18/26 (automatic)4.6-liter V8300 horsepower @ 5750 rpm320 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/25 (manual), 17/23 (automatic)

The V6-powered Mustang Deluxe convertible with the manual transmission has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 24,820, while the automatic adds about $ 1,000. The V8-powered GT Deluxe starts at $ 30,845, while a fully loaded GT can reach $ 40,000. A look at the Fair Purchase Price shows the typical transaction price consumers are paying for the Mustang, so be sure to check it out before you start negotiating. As expected, both the Mustang V6 and Mustang GT retain excellent resale value, on par with more expensive competitors like the BMW Z4 and Mercedes-Benz SLK, and better than the Pontiac G6 and Mitsubishi Eclipse convertibles.

2007 Ford Mustang Future Generations

Ford Mustang Overview and History

2004 saw the rebirth of the Ford Mustang as an American icon with a complete redesign, which was termed by Ford as "retro-futurism". The GT Mustang belonging to the fourth generation maintained the same power output from the Overhead cam 4.6 liter engine which was able to produce more torque than the base 302 version. Still, many owners complained that the GT version was in fact slower, despite the bigger revs displayed on the counter A new engine and design would come stating with 1999. Fresh off the production line, the third generation Mustang was already modified by 1981 with a performance version, the Turbo 4. The 1979 Mustang was released after the success of the second generation. in 1978 the second generation Mustang was reaching its end. The 1971 model was probably the longest Mustang produced. In 1970 the Mustang was facelifted yet again, this time all the headlights were moved inside the grille. 1968 was the year that marked the first major redesign for the Mustang. The 1966 model altered the trim levels on the Mustang. As was a custom in America at the time, every year modifications would be made to a car. 1965 was the first year the GT package was introduced in the Mustang line-up under the name "GT Equipment Package". Based on the 1964 Falcon platform, the first generation Mustang would become an American icon and define the term "pony car", a special breed of cars.
Henry Ford started the company in 1902 with $ 28,000 in cash from twelve investors, among which were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. He was 40 years when he first established the company's first factory on Bagley Street, Detroit.

He would later incorporate the firm on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company would go on and label their models chronologically in alfabetical order, starting with the Model A to the Model K and Model S, which was Ford's last right-hand steering vehicle. Then, in 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, which was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas. This model proved to be of quintessential Ford vehicle, placing the company among the most influential automotive brands in history.

The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, which made it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and layout the basics of mass production principles in 1913 with the introduction of the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.

This organizational innovation brought in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by as much as 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.

Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.

As part of a new set of financial tactics, Ford provided working places for the disabled who otherwise had a hard time finding a job, reduced work shifts and doubled all employee's salaries. Changes like these sparked a tremendous sales increase while also setting the base of modern working conditions.

Still, the US and Canadian market would prove to be too small to fit Ford's plans. By the mid 20's, the Ford label had crossed the ocean and reached England, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria as well as distant Australia. The company's activity on European grounds further helped the brand's revenue growth.

War would not shake the Ford company as bad as other car makers. Post WWI improvements include the introduction of four-wheel brakes and a series of new vehicle releases to match new consumer demands. In 1922 Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired.

Ford Motor Co. was one of the few big American corporations to survive the Great Depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. In May 1929, Ford Motor Co. signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to provide technical assistance until 1938 to construct an integrated automobile-manufacturing plant at Nizhny Novgorod, in exchange for the Soviets purchasing $ 13 million worth of automobiles and parts. Under this agreement many American engineers and skilled auto workers went in 1932 to work on the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), or Gorki Automotive Plant. The few who remained in the Soviet Union after the completion of the plant fell victims to Stalin's Great Terror, ending either shot or exiled to Soviet gulags.

With the arrival of WWII Ford increased its influence on the global stage becoming an active player in the war effort, a thing underlined by US President Franklin Roosevelt referring to Detroit as the "Arsenal of Democracy." When the US War Department handed production of B-24 Liberator airplanes to Ford, the output rose to 20 airplanes per day instead of only one per day managed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation.

After WWII Ford continued its passenger vehicle operations and in 1955 introduced the iconic Thunderbird model. Then it introduced the Edsel brand in 1958, which proved to be a failure and was dissolved in 1960. Part Edsel's failure as an automotive brand resided in the onset of the 1957 recession in the States and the vehicle's high price tag.

Ford Motor Co. managed to get back up from its Edsel failure with the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964. The company's next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967.

Ford plunged into a state of brand-fatigue that would bring the company to the point of near bankruptcy. Following major sales losses in the 2000's, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down.

Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has releases a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns, Ford's luxury division. Business in Europe has also been good for Ford, especially after the introduction of the Focus model in 1997 and although it hasn't fully recovered, it's definitely on the way to regaining popularity.

2007 Ford Mustang Consumer Reviews

Best car I've ever had!
I bought this car on 12/14/2011. I've only driven it for over month, it is my daily driver. It has only 19,000 miles on it and it is absoutely stunning! I love everything about this car. The way the engine rumbles, the noise of the blinkers, the sound of the door when you shut it, the stero is kickin', the ease at which the top goes up and down! I have learned that you actually have to be careful in slower traffic because when you step on the gas...you get an instant response. And yes, I have raced it. I have smoked everyone that I have come up against - in town and highway - with barely any effort. This car was made to go fast! And is excellent therapy if you have a stressful day at work!

V6 Premium 2dr Coupe (4.0L 6cyl 5M)
Classic American muscle in a modern package
I love the way this car looks, truly has the feel of a classic 1960s mustang updated for modern times. I purchased my 2007 V6 Pony package back in February and it has been a GREAT car so far. Handling and steering is superb. I have a custom exhaust and it sounds great for a 6, too. There is a great market for these cars to mod, no matter whether you get a V6 or spring for the GT or Shelby. Parts are plentiful and cheap compared to other cars. Reliability has been good, recently had to replace an alternator, but at 138,000 miles wear items like that should be expected. Just a few critiques though. I wish the V6 of this generation had a little more power, what it has is adequate for sure, but when Camrys are faster than your sporty car, it's lackluster. Also, given the fact that it's a sporty car, the fuel economy wasn't much better than the GT, even though it's a V6. I average 19-21 MPG, but you drive a Mustang for smiles per gallon, not miles. The ride can be a little harsh a first if you come from a non-sporty car, however, it is soft enough to live with on a daily basis and still handle well. My car has the Pony package, which has the GT suspension anyways, so that may give you a better idea. Regular V6s ride a bit smoother I hear, but don't handle as well. Seats are comfy, controls easy to access, and the dash has plenty of chrome for a retro 60s feel, much like the exterior of the car. The back seat is basically useless, but I don't have kids anyways, so it doesn't matter to me. Materials are a little plasticky, but who really cares? The car is so fun that stuff doesn't matter. A set of adjustable Koni shocks can help you tune your suspension for a softer ride or, the other direction, for a firmer ride and better handling. Also be aware that these cars have a sealed transmission, no dipstick, so no repair shops will change your transmission fluid for you, you either have to do it yourself or go to the dealer to change it out. Avoid buying a high mileage car with no maint. records, because a sealed transmission that the fluid was never changed in is a ticking time bomb.

My Favorite Car
This is my 4th car in two years; I've had an Accord, an 86 Camaro, a Camry, and now this and I LOVE IT! It's as fast as my V8 Camaro was and the handling is impeccable. I live in Colorado and it even does well in icy conditions given my previous training with rear-wheel drive. The interior is comfortable and smart looking and the exterior is simply HOT. Gas mileage is decent at around 21 mpg compared to 14 mpg in my similar performing V8 Camaro. Though only complaint I have to say quip about is the quality; I've had it since November and it squeaks like a wild horse. I played the stereo too loud and now the glass in the side view mirrors is loose and rattles! The cheap plastic can cut you.

GT Premium 2dr Coupe (4.6L 8cyl 5M)
Best Midlife Crisis
I was shopping for a Corvette, came very close to buying a C4. Looked at many C5s also. I just couldn't find one that I thought was the right car. My brother-in-law suggested I consider a Mustang GT. I'm very thankful he did, I found a 2007 GT/CS with 22,000 miles on it and couldn't be happier. I bought a much newer, lower mileage Mustang compared to the Vette. I realize many Corvette owners would cringe the thought of even comparing them but the bang for the buck can't be denied. My grin gets larger every time I drive it. I don' regret my decision for one moment.

2014 Ford Mustang
"Unlike any other car I’ve driven... love it!."
2014 GT500 is a monster. Certainly not the fastest car out there but one of the funnest to drive. Highs: The exhaust sound of this car is like no other. It burbles, roars, or crackles depending on how you drive the car. The precision feel of the six speed is perfect. Car gets lots of attention. Launch control is addictive and works well on the street. If you turn the key and don’t feel good when the engine rumbles to life I suggest you buy a Prius. Pin you to the seat acceleration. Power at every RPM in every gear. Essentially a street legal race car. Lows: Everybody want to race you, from rice burners to Ferrari’s. Tires that come stock are horrible in temperatures below 85f. Front end is very low so have to be cautious about pulling in and out of places. Very hard to launch the car aggressively from a stand still without smoking tires, launch control does help. Takes some time to get used to getting into 5th gear. Love this car! If your thinking of picking one up and are on the fence like I was go for it, you won’t regret it.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
