Available in a wide variety of models and backed by 52 years of heritage, it's easy to understand the 2017 Ford Mustang's appeal. But make no mistake in thinking this is a bare-bones muscle car of yore. The Mustang has evolved quite a bit over the years, and this newest generation, which debuted two years ago, can give even European luxury cars a run for their money.

Of course, a key component of the Mustang's appeal is what you get under the hood. We think the Mustang GT's V8 is the way to go given its impressive smoothness and 435 ponies. But even if you stick with the more affordable V6 or the turbocharged four-cylinder, the Mustang delivers respectable power and fuel economy. Inside, the cabin is nicely trimmed, and you can get the Mustang with Ford's latest Sync 3 touchscreen interface (introduced last year), which is a big improvement over the prior MyFord Touch system.

There are, of course, several competitors that give the Mustang a run for its money. The Chevrolet Camaro has been recently redesigned, gaining more powerful engines, refreshed styling, a new interior design and lots of its own technological refinement. While choosing between the two cars may come down to some brand loyalty, we definitely recommend test-driving both cars before making a purchase decision. It's also worth considering the Dodge Challenger, which is less adept around tight turns than either the Camaro or Mustang but has a better ride on the highway and more space for passengers and luggage. If you're thinking outside the muscle car box, you may also consider a few European two-doors like the Audi TT or BMW 2 Series.

It says a lot that you might even consider cross-shopping a Mustang with a BMW. But in the last few years, the bar has been raised for muscle cars and coupes alike, and the Mustang definitely clears that bar with ease. The 2017 Ford Mustang's technological advancements, excellent engines and fun factor all keep it at the front of the coupe/convertible class. Whether you're new to Mustangs and muscle cars altogether or you're a seasoned veteran, this pony car is worth a look.

Standard safety features for the 2017 Ford Mustang include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, a rearview camera, front-seat side airbags, side curtain airbags (coupe only) and driver and front passenger knee airbags. Also standard are Ford's MyKey parental controls and (for manual-transmission models) hill-start assist.

Optional on EcoBoost Premium and GT Premium are adaptive cruise control with forward collision alert and a blind-spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert.

In brake testing, both a Mustang EcoBoost and a Mustang GT (both equipped with the optional Performance package) stopped from 60 mph in 108 feet. That's better than average for this segment. Depending on equipment, stopping distances for the Mustang can vary. A GT without the optional Performance package, but with standard all-season tires, came to a stop in 118 feet from 60 mph, while an EcoBoost convertible with summer performance tires did it in an impressively short 104 feet.

In government crash tests, the Mustang coupe earned a five-star rating (out of a possible five) for overall crash protection, with five stars for total front-impact protection and five stars for total side-impact protection. The independent Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave the Mustang coupe its top rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap front-impact crash test and a second-best "Acceptable" rating for the small-overlap front-impact test. In the remaining, side-impact, roof strength and seat and head restraint design tests, the Mustang earned a "Good" rating.

The 2017 Ford Mustang is available as a coupe or a soft-top convertible. There are five trim levels: V6, EcoBoost, EcoBoost Premium, GT and GT Premium.

The Mustang V6 comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic xenon headlights, LED taillights, a limited-slip rear differential, keyless ignition and entry, cruise control, air-conditioning, manual front seats with driver-side height adjustment, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a rearview camera, the Sync voice control system, Bluetooth, a 4.2-inch central display screen, MyKey parental controls (including a speed limiter, a volume limiter and geo-fencing), Track Apps performance telemetry and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player and dual USB ports.

Options include 18-inch wheels, a rear spoiler, LED foglights and a six-way power driver seat.

The EcoBoost gets those options as standard (albeit with its own wheel design) and adds a turbocharged four-cylinder engine, a six-way power passenger seat, aluminum dashboard trim and active noise cancellation.

Options include cloth Recaro sport seats and an EcoBoost Performance package, which features 19-inch wheels with summer tires, spoiler delete, shorter gearing for more responsive acceleration, a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, a larger radiator, sport-tuned steering and stability control settings, different aluminum dash trim and additional gauges.

To the EcoBoost's standard equipment, the EcoBoost Premium adds heated mirrors (with horse lasers!), a rear diffuser, ambient interior lighting, selectable drive modes, aluminum and chrome interior accents, dual-zone automatic climate control, heated and ventilated front seats, leather upholstery (front seats only), a nine-speaker audio system, satellite radio and the Sync 3 infotainment system (including an 8-inch touchscreen and enhanced voice controls).

The EcoBoost Premium mostly shares the regular EcoBoost's options, substituting leather Recaro sport seats, and it also offers a Premier Trim with Color Accent package (charcoal black interior, color-accented leather upholstery, unique door trim), a Pony package (19-inch wheels, unique front fascia, side stripe, pony-logo floor mats), a navigation system, adaptive cruise control with forward collision alert, automatic wipers, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, driver memory settings (not available with the Recaro seats), HD radio and a 12-speaker Shaker audio system.

The Mustang GT drops back to the regular EcoBoost's equipment level, but it adds a V8 engine, upgraded brakes, electronic line-lock ("to enable warming of the rear tires," says Ford) and launch control (manual transmission only).

Options for the GT are similar to those for the regular EcoBoost, though the GT Performance package is slightly different, featuring Brembo front brakes and a Torsen limited-slip differential. Also offered is a Black Accent package (19-inch black alloy wheels, black-out badges, black rear spoiler).

The GT Premium comes with essentially the same standard features as the EcoBoost Premium and offers largely the same options, but instead of the Pony package, it offers the California Special package (19-inch black alloy wheels, a more prominent rear spoiler and special exterior and interior trim details).

Rear parking sensors are optional on all Mustangs, while the EcoBoost and GT coupes are eligible for a black-painted roof. The EcoBoost Premium and GT Premium also offer 20-inch wheels.

The rear-wheel-drive Mustang is offered with either a six-speed manual transmission or a six-speed automatic with paddle shifters. Three engines are available.

A 3.7-liter V6 engine with 300 horsepower and 280 pound-feet of torque is standard on the base Mustang. Official EPA estimates weren't available as of this writing, but last year's Mustang V6 earned 21 mpg combined (17 city/28 highway) with the manual and 22 mpg combined (19/28) with the automatic.

The EcoBoost and EcoBoost Premium trims step up to a turbocharged 2.3-liter four-cylinder engine generating 310 hp and 320 lb-ft. Fuel economy (2016 numbers) is estimated at 25 mpg combined (22 city/31 highway) with the manual coupe, 25 mpg combined (21/32) with the automatic coupe and 24 mpg combined (20/29) with the automatic convertible.

Mustang GTs pack a 5.0-liter V8 that cranks out 435 hp and 400 lb-ft of torque. Fuel economy estimates from last year stand at 19 mpg combined (15 city/25 highway) with the manual coupe, 19 mpg combined (16/25) with the automatic coupe and 18 mpg combined (15/24) with the automatic convertible.

In testing, a Mustang EcoBoost with the automatic transmission accelerated from zero to 60 in a respectable 5.9 seconds. A Mustang EcoBoost with the manual transmission also took 5.9 seconds to accelerate from zero to 60 mph. We tested two Mustang GTs, one with a manual and the other with an automatic. Both were able to run the sprint to 60 mph in just 4.7 seconds, a competitive time among similarly powered rivals.

Whether you spend your time behind the wheel on the open highway or in dense city traffic, the 2017 Ford Mustang is easy to drive and generally pain-free. It's quiet and composed on the highway, even if the ride can get annoyingly bouncy on irregular pavement, but it's generally smooth. One option that can make things a bit bumpy is the Performance package (EcoBoost and GT models only), which includes a stiffened suspension that's noticeably less supple. If you're looking for a track-and-canyon-capable Mustang, that's probably the suspension you want, but there's a trade-off for daily driving comfort.

Even though it's considered the base engine, the V6 is actually a pretty strong engine choice. It has respectable horsepower and fuel economy for the class but upgrading to the turbo-4 or the V8 is definitely worth the cost. The EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder is chiefly distinguished by its superior EPA fuel economy, but it isn't very refined. It lacks the smooth and consistent power delivery of its German counterparts, but it's a serviceable engine that incidentally improves handling due to its lighter weight.

As for the GT's V8, it does add some pounds in the nose and you take an MPG hit, but that's where its drawbacks end. This 5.0-liter V8 puts down serious power and reaches redline effortlessly with nary a vibration. The GT's exhaust note isn't as evocative or soul-stirring (see: loud) as some other V8s in the class, but that's easily solved with a trip to the Ford Performance parts store or your local aftermarket source.

For more impressions on what it's like to own a Mustang, read our one-year test of a 2015 Ford Mustang GT.

Inside, the Mustang pays homage to its forbears with retro touches like a dual-cowl dashboard, but it also offers nearly all the modern tech you could ask for. Even the base Mustang comes standard with unexpected features like keyless entry and ignition, a rearview camera (which helps mitigate the poor rear visibility) and Track Apps (for measuring lap times and such). Also standard is the Sync voice command system, which greatly simplifies the operation of audio and phone functions.

We're not overly fond of the cheap look and feel of the base 4.2-inch central display and surrounding field of buttons, though, so we recommend upgrading to the optional Sync 3 touchscreen infotainment system (with the 8-inch screen) if possible. Sync 3 is a welcome replacement to the MyFord Touch predecessor, as it provides a drastically simplified interface with smartphone-style pinching and swiping gestures.

Regardless of trim level, the Mustang's interior materials are high-quality. Drivers of almost all sizes will easily find a suitable driving position, thanks in part to a standard telescoping steering wheel. There are a wide selection of seating options thanks to the abundant packaging that can be selected with the Mustang, and seat fitment will depend on your size and options selections. The standard seats are comfortable and provide plenty of bolstering, but the optional Recaro sport seats increase lateral support for aggressive driving. The Recaros can be a bit confining depending on your size, though, and they can't be had with power adjustment, heating or cooling.

Technically, both the coupe and convertible body styles have four seats, but you'll have a hard time fitting adults (or even big teenagers) in the rear seats. If you're looking for a two-door coupe in this class with more rear seat room, take a closer look at the Dodge Challenger. The Mustang coupe's trunk provides 13.5 cubic feet of cargo space -- fairly generous for a sport coupe -- while the convertible offers 11.4 cubes. Standard folding rear seatbacks on the coupe expand cargo capacity.

With the independent rear suspension that arrived a couple of years ago as part of its 6th-generation revamp, the Ford Mustang finally handles like a modern car. In addition to being more nimble than its solid-axle predecessors, it's just better in everyday driving, with a smoother ride and none of the jittery rear-end motions of the old car. Whether you choose the standard V6, small but potent EcoBoost 4-cylinder or the 5.0-liter V8, all Mustang models are notably quick. However, it's the last of these that truly sounds like a Ford Mustang should, with an auditory rumble and roar that's pure Americana. The pricey Shelby GT350 offers true track-ready performance and an addicting howl from its 5.2-liter V8. The Mustang's 6-speed manual transmission is commendable, with short throws and solid feel. If you prefer the 6-speed automatic, you can still pick your own gears with paddles mounted on the steering wheel.

CREATURE COMFORTSMuscle cars used to put brawn first, even if that meant bruising passengers. Not so with the new Mustang. Consider the heated and cooled front seats, CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration and even active noise cancellation for a quieter ride. All are easily available on the 2017 Mustang.IT'S BURNOUT-READYLet's be honest: You know you want to. That's why the new Mustang 5.0 features a standard "line-lock" mode that locks the front brakes for standing burnouts. Manual-transmission GT models also include launch control for maximum acceleration.

Coupe or convertible, Ford's modern muscle car seats four passengers but the rear seats are extremely tight -- and in the hard-core Shelby GT350R, nonexistent. Up front, room is decent for driver and passenger. The front seats are comfortable, and the sturdy audio/climate-control switches are easy to reach. Beware the rear blind spots in coupes created by the raked roof. The Ford Mustang's trunk is bigger than you might expect -- 13.5 cubic feet in coupes, 11.4 in convertibles -- and the rear seats fold flat to accommodate longer items. The Mustang convertible uses a one-hand release latch for the power-operated soft top.

With its long hood, short trunk, sloping rear glass and tri-bar taillights, the 2017 Ford Mustang could never be mistaken for anything other than Ford's pony car. Yet this is no retro-wannabe. The sleek lines, aggressive headlights and windswept design also make the latest Mustang totally relevant today. Gone is the bulkiness of the previous design, replaced with a lower, wider-looking car that, from most angles, is beautiful. Convertibles look best with the lined and insulated fabric top folded, but even when up it's still unmistakably Mustang. Active grille shutters on 2.3-liter models can close to redirect airflow, improving aerodynamics.

The least expensive Ford Mustang V6 Fastback comes equipped with a rearview camera, push-button start, Track Apps showing performance metrics like g-forces, selectable-effort steering (Normal/Sport/Comfort), 4-way manual-adjust driver's seat, high-intensity headlights and 17-inch aluminum wheels. Standard audio is an AM/FM/CD system with two USB inputs and Sync Bluetooth connectivity. Safety features include traction and stability control and front, side and knee airbags. EcoBoost trims include the turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, power front seats, LED fog lights, 18-inch wheels and decklid spoiler. GT Mustangs have the iconic 5.0-liter V8, larger brakes and the line-lock feature for burnouts -- for track use only, wink wink.

From ventilated front seats to a Shaker audio system and Brembo performance brakes, there’s a slew of options to suit your taste and budget. We're fans of the new Sync3 system, which is far easier to see and use than past versions of Ford's infotainment system, and for 2017 is compatible with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto and has nine speakers and navigation. Leather interior is optional, as is blind-spot monitoring with rear cross-traffic alert. The track-ready-but-street-legal Mustang Shelby 350R can be more like the slightly less-intense Shelby 350 by reequipping it with an audio system, rear seat and air conditioning.

Four engines are now available for the 2017 Mustang, with even the least making a potent 300 ponies. Base models use a naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6, while EcoBoost models have a turbocharged 2.3-liter 4-cylinder engine. For those who won't recognize a Mustang with anything less than a V8, the GT is your ride. It's ready to roll with a 5.0. For buyers who plan to track their Mustang or simply desire a real screamer, there are the Shelby GT350 models, which use a 5.2-liter V8 that spits out 526 horsepower in both the standard and GT350R derivative. All Mustangs are rear-wheel drive and come with a 6-speed manual transmission. A 6-speed automatic transmission is optional on all except the Shelby variants.3.7-liter V6300 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm280 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/27 mpg (manual & automatic, coupe)2.3-liter turbocharged inline-4310 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm320 lb-ft of torque @ 3,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/30 mpg (manual & automatic), 21/27 mpg (manual, convertible), 20/28 mpg (automatic, convertible), 21/28 mpg (manual, coupe w/performance package), 20/28 mpg (automatic, coupe w/performance package)5.0-liter V8435 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm400 lb-ft of torque @ 4,250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/25 mpg (manual, coupe), 15/24 mpg (automatic, coupe), 14/23 mpg (manual, convertible), 15/23 mpg (automatic, convertible), 14/23 mpg (manual, coupe w/performance package)5.2-liter V8 (GT350)526 horsepower @7,500 rpm429 lb-ft of torque @ 4,750 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 14/21 mpgNote: Due to changes in EPA testing to more effectively reflect real-world conditions, some 2017 models show slightly lower fuel-economy scores than their 2016 versions.

The 2017 Ford Mustang has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting at $ 25,545 for a V6 model with manual transmission. Opting for an automatic transmission is roughly $ 1,200 extra. A turbocharged Mustang with the EcoBoost 4-cylinder starts $ 1,000 higher, while a Mustang GT with the 5.0-liter V8 begins at $ 33,545 -- not a lot for a car that packs 435 horsepower. Convertibles start just over $ 31,000 and climb just past $ 43,000 with a 5.0-liter V8. The base price of a Mustang Shelby GT350 -- available in coupe form only -- has increased to $ 56,495, largely because the formerly optional Track Package is now standard. The Mustang's prices slightly undercut those of the Chevy Camaro and Dodge Challenger. Before buying, check the Fair Purchase Price to get the best deal. The Mustang's resale value is expected to split the difference between the Camaro and Challenger.

2017 Ford Mustang Future Generations

Ford Mustang Overview and History

The sixth generation Ford Mustang received an update in 2017 coming with a host of features including new tech and design changes along with better performance and more powerful engines. Based on the 2015 Ford Mustang GT350, the GT350R takes it up one more notch for track-day enthusiasts by bringing more racing oriented parts. The all new, most powerful naturally aspirated Mustang Shelby GT350 broke cover on the Internet just before the 2014 Los Angeles Auto Show where it has been showcased afterwards. Unlike previous iterations, the sixth-generation Ford Mustang was developed as a global car, receiving the company’s trademark trapezoidal grille and an independent rear suspension. The GT Mustang belonging to the fourth generation maintained the same power output from the Overhead cam 4.6 liter engine which was able to produce more torque than the base 302 version. Still, many owners complained that the GT version was in fact slower, despite the bigger revs displayed on the counter A new engine and design would come stating with 1999. Fresh off the production line, the third generation Mustang was already modified by 1981 with a performance version, the Turbo 4. The 1979 Mustang was released after the success of the second generation. in 1978 the second generation Mustang was reaching its end. The 1971 model was probably the longest Mustang produced. In 1970 the Mustang was facelifted yet again, this time all the headlights were moved inside the grille. 1968 was the year that marked the first major redesign for the Mustang. The 1966 model altered the trim levels on the Mustang. As was a custom in America at the time, every year modifications would be made to a car. 1965 was the first year the GT package was introduced in the Mustang line-up under the name "GT Equipment Package". Based on the 1964 Falcon platform, the first generation Mustang would become an American icon and define the term "pony car", a special breed of cars.
Henry Ford started the company in 1902 with $ 28,000 in cash from twelve investors, among which were John and Horace Dodge, who would later found the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company. He was 40 years when he first established the company's first factory on Bagley Street, Detroit.

He would later incorporate the firm on June 16, 1903. Ford Motor Company would go on and label their models chronologically in alfabetical order, starting with the Model A to the Model K and Model S, which was Ford's last right-hand steering vehicle. Then, in 1908 Ford introduced the Model T, which was designed by Childe Harold Wills and two Hungarian immigrants, Joseph A. Galamb and Eugene Farkas. This model proved to be of quintessential Ford vehicle, placing the company among the most influential automotive brands in history.

The Ford Model T was reliable, practical and affordable, which made it a big hit in the US, where it was advertised as the middle-class man's vehicle. The car's success compelled Ford to expand his business and layout the basics of mass production principles in 1913 with the introduction of the world's first vehicle assembly line. By 1912, production figures for the Model T alone reached nearly 200,000 units.

This organizational innovation brought in the vehicle construction field allowed Ford to reduce chassis assembly time by as much as 10 hours, dropping from 12 ½ h to 2h 40 min.

Besides ensuring the efficiency of the production process, Ford turned his company into an interactive entity by announcing a new profit-sharing policy. This would grant buyers a cut of profits if sales reached 300,000. As expected, sales effortlessly reached the 300k threshold and went even further to hit a record 501,000 in 1915.

As part of a new set of financial tactics, Ford provided working places for the disabled who otherwise had a hard time finding a job, reduced work shifts and doubled all employee's salaries. Changes like these sparked a tremendous sales increase while also setting the base of modern working conditions.

Still, the US and Canadian market would prove to be too small to fit Ford's plans. By the mid 20's, the Ford label had crossed the ocean and reached England, France, Germany, Denmark, Austria as well as distant Australia. The company's activity on European grounds further helped the brand's revenue growth.

War would not shake the Ford company as bad as other car makers. Post WWI improvements include the introduction of four-wheel brakes and a series of new vehicle releases to match new consumer demands. In 1922 Ford entered the luxury car segment with the acquisition of the Lincoln Motor Company, named after Abraham Lincoln whom Henry Ford admired.

Ford Motor Co. was one of the few big American corporations to survive the Great Depression, although the plummeting automotive sales led the company to scale down its operations and lay off many workers. In May 1929, Ford Motor Co. signed an agreement with the Soviet Union to provide technical assistance until 1938 to construct an integrated automobile-manufacturing plant at Nizhny Novgorod, in exchange for the Soviets purchasing $ 13 million worth of automobiles and parts. Under this agreement many American engineers and skilled auto workers went in 1932 to work on the Gorkovsky Avtomobilny Zavod (GAZ), or Gorki Automotive Plant. The few who remained in the Soviet Union after the completion of the plant fell victims to Stalin's Great Terror, ending either shot or exiled to Soviet gulags.

With the arrival of WWII Ford increased its influence on the global stage becoming an active player in the war effort, a thing underlined by US President Franklin Roosevelt referring to Detroit as the "Arsenal of Democracy." When the US War Department handed production of B-24 Liberator airplanes to Ford, the output rose to 20 airplanes per day instead of only one per day managed by the Consolidated Aircraft Corporation.

After WWII Ford continued its passenger vehicle operations and in 1955 introduced the iconic Thunderbird model. Then it introduced the Edsel brand in 1958, which proved to be a failure and was dissolved in 1960. Part Edsel's failure as an automotive brand resided in the onset of the 1957 recession in the States and the vehicle's high price tag.

Ford Motor Co. managed to get back up from its Edsel failure with the introduction of the Falcon model in 1960 and the Mustang in 1964. The company's next major step was represented by the formation of Ford Europe division in 1967.

Ford plunged into a state of brand-fatigue that would bring the company to the point of near bankruptcy. Following major sales losses in the 2000's, Ford was pinned against the wall by debts and the imminence of closing down.

Preferring to make it back on its own, Ford mortgaged all of its assets in 2006. As of then, the company has releases a variety of new models both under the Ford brand name and the rest of the sub-brands it owns such as fresher and edgier Mercuries and flashier Lincolns, Ford's luxury division. Business in Europe has also been good for Ford, especially after the introduction of the Focus model in 1997 and although it hasn't fully recovered, it's definitely on the way to regaining popularity.

V6 2dr Convertible (3.7L 6cyl 6M)
Rented One, Want One
My wife and I got this car as a loaner for our regular car's recall replacement. I've never owned a performance auto, but have been a long time motorcyclist, and have owned several high performance 2-wheelers. This Mustang blows me away. The acceleration is awesome. I drove across a mountain range on a very twisty section of interstate, and have to say that was the most fun I have ever had on 4 wheels. It was solidly planted, the steering was very precise; I could easily change lines mid-curve; acceleration out of the curves was very controlled. With the top up, it feels like an upscale touring car. With the top down, it is simply sexy as h***. We're now planning to sell our SUV, and buy a new Mustang. Life is short.

V6 2dr Coupe (3.7L 6cyl 6M)
Best Mustang Yet!
Just purchased the Mustang, V6, auto, last week. Impressive car. I have owned 11 mustangs in the past and this is by far the most capable mustang yet. The V6 has plenty of power and the transmission shifts at just the right times. The independent rear suspension is great and provides an aggressive yet comfortable ride. Although I haven't put too many miles on the car yet, averaging 24.5 mpg with a 60/40 mix of in-town and freeway driving. This is great. The interior is very good with soft materials where you want them and the seats are very supportive and comfortable. Impressive implementation of the instrumentation. I am sad that this is the last year for the V6 as it is a great engine and is a fantastic performer. I found the 4cyl loud under load and at times clumsy on the test drive and I feel Ford is making a big mistake removing the V6 from the engine lineup. Overall, I have a big smile on my face and am enjoying the ride. I am looking forward to putting the mustang through its paces on a trip this summer on route 66. ***UPDATE*** After having the Mustang for 18 months I still have a big grin on my face every time a I get in. Have had no problems with the car, no visits to the dealership other than oil changes. The overall feel of the drive is still outstanding with a big plus for the V6. Still bummed out about ford dropping the V6, hopefully they will come to their senses. Love the car.

GT Premium 2dr Coupe (5.0L 8cyl 6M)
GT PREMIUM WITH PERFORMANCE PACK
I bought this car in December of '16 after a wait of over 2 years. This is my third Mustang i have owned in the last 35 years. This car has really matured since my old '86 gt I had years ago. The car is larger and drives larger than both my '86 and my '02 GT I had to sell before buying this Mustang, yet it far out handles both of them (my 02 GT had about 4k in aftermarket upgrades in both engine mods and suspension). The only real complaint about the car is the ingress and egress for me. I am 6'4" and you have to be fairly flexible to get in and out. Once you are in though, the car fits like a glove, the shifter falling right into place, the steering wheel can be adjusted to taste and everything is very simple to use. The standard leather seats are outstanding, and after taking a 6-1/2 hour trip up to Napa from So. Cal, the seats gave my wife and I plenty of support and the heating and cooling feature is great! As for the performance...my mustang is plenty quick, but I don't drive it to be a drag racer. I wanted a true GT. The handling is more than adequate with the performance package, and the six piston Brembos are superlative. There is a reason why Mustangs have been around for over 50 years. Ford has obviously found a formula of performance, comfort, and style and blend it together in a fashion that other American car manufacturers try to emulate, but always come up short in one or more of these categories, missing the mark on Ford's pony car and what it represents. Edmunds has requested that I update my review of my Mustang GT Premium with the performance package. Here you go. Everything I wrote in the above original comments 8 or 9 months ago, still holds true. This car is a pleasure to drive and it puts a smile on my face every day. Rowing through the gears in Southern California with or without traffic has never been so much fun. I have had the opportunity to let others drive it and they all walk away saying, "Nice drive!" or "This car is some serious fun!" Of course, like me, they also have a smile on their faces after they are done driving it. March 15th 2019 update. The Mustang still runs great. Had a problem with oil leaking on the manifold and it smoked a little by the passenger side hood near the windshield. Brought it into Ford to rectify the situation with out an appointment, they wouldn't see me, so I made an appointment. About a week and a half later, I dropped the car off and picked up my rental. 1 week later the car was ready to pick up. Ford fixed and covered everything, including the rental car, at no cost to me other than some time. Secondly, the original Pirrelli tires that came stock on the car are ready for replacement. The Ford dealer that I originally purchased the car from asked me if i wanted to trade in my mustang for a newer one at the same price or lower due to my excellent credit rating. . I decided I would see what they had to offer. When I went to my appointment, I met the sales manager. He came out and looked at my car and stated he had nothing on the lot that was even close to what I had purchased originally from them. Virtually everything on the lot was non premium, non performance pack cars with automatics. I passed and felt comfortable doing so, being that my mustang was ordered exactly the way iIwanted it to be in the first place. The car runs great and there are still no squeaks or rattles anywhere. It is still a pleasure to drive, and now I feel like I have a very good car after seeing some new ones on the Ford lot. Edmunds has requested another update on my 2017 mustang. The car is still a pleasure to drive. Other than replacing the Pirelli tires with Nitto 555G2 tires, and regular oil changes, there have been no issues. Everything that I have previously written still holds true to this point.

V6 2dr Coupe (3.7L 6cyl 6M)
MY AMAZING LITTLE PONY - GO PONY GO!
I am in love with my new little ruby red pony car that drives like a stallion! This is the fourth Mustang I have owned. I purchased all of them brand new. I loved each and every one of them, and then the 2017 arrived! I saw it featured on the internet, and I kept saying that is my new car, and it is now. The ruby red is a metallic color, and it really shines in the sun; it is gorgeous! I own the 6 cylinder automatic. I am extremely impressed. I almost went for the GT, but the V6 was more affordable. I was shocked when I drove it. It is about five times faster than the other Mustangs I have owned - the last one being a 2004. The 2004 and the two models I purchased in the 90's all seemed sluggish. Not my new V6; that little pony flies down the road. I haven't driven a car that flew in a very long time. You step on the gas, and you're off and running. This car's acceleration is fantastic; it really moves. When I'm at a red light, the cars that were next to me are about two or more car lengths away. The freeway is unbelievable. I took my new pony out for the maiden voyage about 1:00 AM as I live in Southern California where the traffic is horrible. I wanted to take my new car out for a spin. I couldn't believe how fast that car can go with little to no effort. I had the car up to 105 mph but didn't even know it until I looked at the speedometer. It felt like I was going about 70. It handles incredibly. This car just hugs the road and is fantastic when making a fast turn. Okay, so I drive like a nut, but this car has airbags all over the place, a long hood, so it should hold up extremely well in the event something should happen. The safety reviews were five stars. All of my former Mustangs were totaled, one of which went upside down. As the human Mustang test dummy, the Mustangs hold up extremely well in accidents. Since this Mustang has a lot more safety features than my old ones, I'm sure it is extremely sound, The exterior is just gorgeous, and I especially like the hood. Overall the car seems longer and wider than my other Mustangs. The keyless entry is great. You don't even have to take the keyless remote out of your handbag (or pocket) to open the car. You simply grab the handle, and the car magically opens. To lock it, you close the door and place a finger on the end of the handle, and the car locks. I'm 57 and can get in and out of the car very easily. Now for the interior. I bought it with the basic package, but the basic package has all the amenities I want and/or need. I lied except for one thing, neither of the front seats are power. The other Mustangs had a power driver's seat. Then again, I was playing with the all the front seat adjustments. If you like your seat in one place which most people do, the no power seats is not a problem. Actually it seems the seats are very adjustable. As far I can tell the seat goes forward and all the way back to the back seats! Therefore, if you happen to be tall, I can't see there being a problem with the car being too small. The seats also go up and down, and the back of the seat is also adjustable. The basic package come with cloth seats. Doesn't everyone want leather; well, I got the basic package. My car came with the ruby red exterior with what they call ebony seats. The seats are dark, but they are not jet black. I'm going to say it's a very pretty shade of a dark gray. I love it, and the seats are very comfortable as well. It has Bluetooth which to me is a luxury from my 2004. It is so cool! It plays the songs off my iPhone. Today I tried calling a friend, and I could them extremely well, and the controls are on the steering wheel in an accessible place. My car also will read your speed from 0 to 60 etc. That is a must for me to try out when I'm not in a busy traffic area. In the manual I believe it has paddle controls on the steering wheel in the event you want to drive it like a manual transmission - I don't so won't be using that perk. I almost forgot about the tilt steering wheel. I tried it out last evening. I was so impressed. That wheel not only tilted but you can also adjust the distance of the wheel. I moved the steering wheel closer to me and lowered it a bit. Now it really feels like I'm driving a race car. I'm extremely glad I didn't get the V8 as the V6 has all the power I will ever need. I highly recommend this car. I've only owned mine for two weeks, but it is so much fun to drive. I really love it and anyone who buys this car surely will too!
tosserstudio,
I LOVE MY STANG!
I have never had a problem with this car...from the heated/cooled seats to the lumbar driver's seat. The ease of driving is amazing and the selection of various driving modes excellent. Hubby always preferred Ford rear ends and rear wheel drive. The gas mileage is so low at 25/32. It is powerful when you need it...and, let's face it, the convertible top down in warm months is incomparable. It is an all season car, believe it or not. The top never leaks, in the coldest months it is as warm as you want it inside. Live a little...buy a Mustang :)
compeltindows,
Best car since my Buick Grand National
I have owned my 2017 Mustang since November 2016. I only have 30,000 miles on it. I love it!!!!! GO GO GO!
hoodenfood,
Great car.
It has great looks, comfort, performance and features. It’s stylish and has all the features that are important tome.
colagyr,
The 4th (and best) mustang I’ve owned.
2017 Mustang GT. I’ve owned a ‘99 V6, 2000 V6, and an ‘06 GT. I know you can’t compare the V6s to the V8s. Especially the older ones that I had, but this ‘17 even compared to my ‘06 GT is ridiculously overpowering. The 300hp to the 435hp and the rumble from the exhaust is incredible. Driving 55-65 mph in this thing just feels like a tiger pacing back and forth in a cage, waiting to break loose. Then you’ve got the interior that just embraces you with the bucket seats. It literally feels like the car is holding you. The electronic features are really nice too with all the information available on the gauge cluster and everything able to be controlled right from the steering wheel. I actually looked specifically for an automatic for the paddle shift feature. And once I drove it, I liked the idea of getting all of the pros from a manual and none of the cons, such as clutch delay or jerky shift motions. It’s a sexy looking car, don’t get me wrong, the only reason I give it 4 stars for styling is because I personally prefer the more retro body style of the ‘05-‘09 models and obviously the late ‘60s. And 4 stars for comfort because it does feel a little stiff when taking corners. That could be me still adjusting to it though, since I’ve only had it for 3 days. I 100% love this car though and wouldn’t trade it in for anything.

BEST VEHICLE OF ALL TIMES

Mustangs Forever!
this is without a doubt the most fun to drive car I have ever owned, the performance and handling is very surprising for a car that costs less than 50k, ride and comfort is very good seats have ample support and fuel economy is overall pretty good for an 8 cylinder car, the accessories available for this car to make it your own are exceptional!
stressvanquish,
Great handling fastback
With Pirelli P Zero tires this vehicle sticks to the pavement! The 2.3 turbo 4 coupled to a 6-speed manual puts the joy back into driving. Terrific brakes. I'm 6- foot 2, 250 pounds. So getting in and out is an adventure at 74 years old! But once seated it's perfectly comfortable. Almost as much fun as my bike on these 2-lane blacktops in the mountains of western North Carolina. It's NOT a people hauler, just a beautifully crafted and engineered 2-seater. Nice going, Ford!
onlookerbolham,
great Car-2017 GT California special
its been an amazing car so far, i don't get to drive it as much as i would like but its a blast every time i get in the car. i couldn't give quality a 5 star only because some body panels are not lined up correctly. its no a big deal or very noticeable but in my book you only get 5 star for something that's perfect. super comfortable and the cooled seats are amazing. i wish the exhaust was a bit beefier, so ive been looking at aftermarket for that. but handles amazing, plenty of power. other then that i wish there was more leather/suede covering more of the plastics. ive gotten up to 26 MPG on the highway and average 17.8 combined with conscious effort to save them mpgs. however with moderate to sometimes heavy acceleration without beating on the car it averages about 15.7 mpg. while a blast i would not recommend this car to anyone 15-20. it takes no effort in this car to spin the tires and even less to hit well above legal speed limits and the rolling in to the power is very addictive, the feel and sound is very intoxicating which can lead to some hefty fines and increased insurance rates. but if you can have semblance of self control i would recommend 100/100 times.
frostinggambler,
Great car for the money
The car has been fantastic, especially for being a 4 cylinder. It has great power and I average about 26mpg, however, the sound is what you expect from the smaller engine. If you are looking for a good car for college and you don't want a honda civic or a Toyota corolla, this is the car for you.
luggmagnitude,
Modern muscle without too much technology.
Like driving an old school muscle car with today's dependability , safety , comfort, ride and actually excellent gas mileage. This could easily be an everyday driver. Love the 5.0 Coyote sound and it"s very quick.
synthesisgem,
nice car but not the best
Didn't care for the standard shift. Nose in cab. bad ride

Amazing Track Car
Outstanding track car that is an absolute blast to drive. A true drivers car that is engaging in every aspect. Amazing engine with aggressive note. Handles like a dream and stops on a dime.

Totally awesome car Just love it!
This car has been more then I imagined I have enjoyed it so much. It’s beautiful has great power I love the performance package. We have enjoyed trips in it so much.
swooshjackberry,
Wish I had kelp my 2014 mustang v6.
More road noise with independent suspension. 4 cyl. turbo not as responsive as the v6, also gets worse gas mileage on the highway than the v6. Turning radius is worse than the 2014. I should have kelp my coupe. Have had to get window motor replaced already. It is my fault - I let a salesman con me into a 4 banger convertible instead of the 5.0 coupe.
astonishedtanning,
Best bang for the buck on the market
Truly impressive automobile for the price. The complimentary day at the Ford Performance GT350 Track Attack was absolutely worth the trip to Utah.
keroseneengorge,
Best Performance Mustang Ever.
Bought this car ( 5.0 Prem. Conv.) in August of 2017. Amazing pickup, 6 speed auto shifts really well. Beautiful lines and very good gas mileage. NO complaints what so ever.
creamedmax,
Best sports car for a 19 year old.
I bought this car when I was 19, and I am completely satisfied. Ive had the car for about a year and I dont really have much to complain. It has the all the power that a young person should have with the elegant look that catches many eyes. The 2017 Mustang is a good deal and a reliable choice that I highly recommend.
sputterequilibrium,
super sweet package of show and go!
My wife and I recently decided to get a second car at retirement. We hit the jackpot with this Shadow Black 2017 ecoboost premium Mustang. It offersa lot of WOW factor in a potent performing package. Were getting 27-30 mpg overall and get rubbernecked a lot. Super comfortable for long drives. We get a lot of Nice car cool ride comments from young and old alike. We had 60s and 70s mustangs in the past, but this one has really impressed us..Thanks Ford!
condenseused,
Ill Buy another
Ford has come long ways, in reliability , performance and tech. Ive owned 35 cars and now iam 40 plus, this is one of the few American cars that I would def buy again, the v6 has enough horse power for me, more reliable then 4 turbo, and less expensive then the gt. After owning a Dodge Charger, Camaro( never again). The car is most impressive for daily driver and weekend fun.
wranglehyndburn,
My first car
I love this car, i got it in lightning blue and its amazing, great tech including the reverse sensing system.

Muscle Car
Good car except for the Rear View Camera which failed at the 500 mile mark. Dealership says they replaced the camera but it is still Not working. I think Ford manufactures vehicles but does not have the dealership technicians available to fix them when something goes wrong. Dealerships are fast to sell you a vehicle and just as Fast to dump you along the wayside when you have a problem. It has happened with every New Ford Ive purchased so I will not be purchasing any Fords in the future.
revealoffended,
Got more than I expected!
What a screaming deal this car was!! I bought a 2017 Ecoboost Manual as a replacement for my daily driven 91 Mazda Miata that was totaled in January 2017. I needed the best fuel economy I could get for my 250 miles per week work commute, but wanted something that was still fun to drive. I had driven an automatic version before and wasnt completely sold so when I decided to buy one I opted for the less expensive 6sp Manual. Perfect Combination! I have successfully chased my friends ZX-14 Sportbike up twisty mountain roads without him having to stop and wait for me. I have a best 0-60 of 6.2 sec (I need to work on my launches!) with a 2.4s 60 foot time she moves off the line like many V-8 cars on street tires, and will probably run 100 mph in the 1/4 (my only 1/4 mile run so far topped out at 98mph.) Everyone of my friends from police officers, to Import Car fans, to many old school Muscle Car fans are stunned when I hammer the throttle and they are pinned into the seat. It is already faster than the beloved 5.0L Fox Bodies of old with 10x better handling. The only thing that kept me from giving a 10 in Quality was my car had a seam on the drivers seat back with 3-4 broken stitches, which Ford quickly remedied. Speaking of seats these are the most comfortable seats of anything Ive ever owned. I have problems with my tail bone and after 3 hours of driving I usually have to start shifting the seat around to so I am suffering minimal pain, even in my Lariat Package F-250. My Mustang? 10 hours strait from South Carolina to PA and never started to get sore!!! Oh and back to I needed something that got decent fuel mileage, Yep!! Got that too! My worse tank of fuel was during the 1,000 mile break in period at 25.5 mpg. My best tank of fuel was all highway across PA, Ohio, and Michigan returning 33.8mpg and for the last 7,800 miles of combined driving to work Im averaging 28mpg. (all MPG are hand calculated using GPS mileage and fuel needed to fill the tank, and not using the in dash display which returns a mile per gallon that is 1.6mpg Better than actual. Also I have used Midgrade and/or Premium for all my driving and only premium for performance results) So I get Mazda Miata fuel mileage (my 91 returned 27-30 mpg every time) and surprising performance in a larger more comfortable car since Im getting too old to crawl into a Miata anymore. Speaking of roomy, the Mustangs trunk is HUGE for the size/class of car it will haul luggage for 3 people real easy. While I wouldnt put an adult in the back seat for a long trip, I have put full grown adults in the back seat for trips across town with no complaints from the back seat about comfort or head room (well people under 6 feet anyway) Id recommend a Mustang to anyone willing to listen, and I tell them to drive the EcoBoost first even if you think youd only buy a V-8. Rent one for a weekend if you dont want to go to a dealership for a test drive, its an experience you wont regret! My only wish is that I could have afforded the Performance Package!
robbriefcase,
Surprised & Impressed with my twin Mustang Conv.
Bought one 2017 GT with automaticyellow convertible yellow stichting on seats;etc. just before I left for summer home. Thought I had gotten a great deal using 0% financing for 36 months. When I got to my summer home, I missed it and had seen a yellow convertible as I went by nearest Ford dealer. Looked up car details on-line and it was a manual tranny with California special package. Even better, it was now 0% financing for 72 months, so I had to have it as well!! Very impressed with these Mustangs and even better, my wife loves both cars. About the only negative is on my manual model as it does not have an indicator for what gear you are usingnot always easy to find gear to use in a 6 speed box. Else, I am very happy with my twin Mustangs and I spent less than 100K, which would have been the minimum for a nice Porsche 911 or Mercedes SL500I have owned more that one of each of these cars. Very glad to know that they were both built in Flat Rock, MI which means more employment in the USA!!! At the end, I am not sure which Is the better reason for being happy? Two great cars or free money0% financing?? Maybe BOTH!!

2017 GT350
This machine commands a lot of respect! Ford really made an effort to build a race car that you can drive on the roads as well. The exhaust sound is surreal and it red lines at 8,250 rpm. Yes! Never a car that could go that high in rpms! Love this car!

"Proud Pony"
This car is flat out amazing. Handling, mileage, power, styling. It's grin inspiring and we are about to buy our 3rd Mustang for the family! Once you drive one, you'll understand. The 10 speed auto trans is how we went, with the turbo 4, and it is amazing! The car does 13.75 in the 1/4 mile, bone stock. No tune etc. Straight off the show room floor. Then, with a bit of tweaking, and very little cash invested, it now does 12.78 1/4's at 106 mph. CAI added, 3inch stainless exhaust added and a tune from a local tuner shop - all told, 2k more invested than spent (paid $ 24,500 off the lot.) - Seriously could not be happier. It flys, gets amazing mileage and with MBRP exhaust, sounds awesome. FORD, - I'm impressed!

"8th Mustang, Still love them"
Well as the title implies this is my 8th Mustang, I traded a 2007 Porsche Carrera, for this 2019 GT Premium, with manual transmission and adaptive exhaust, GT performance pack 1, 401A package, in Orange Fury. Since I have had years from 1967, to a slew of FOX bodys, an SN95, a 2014 and now this. I have to give Ford props. This is the first Mustang that I just love the way it is. I could not do a single mod and love it just the same. The exhaust tone is perfect, no drone and just motor music. The interior is comfortable, and I'm no small guy. The technology is just fun from Nav, selectable exhaust , steering and overall instrument themes adjustability. The 5.0 is just a dream to drive. Lots of power, and the torque allows you to not have to shift up and down so much. Shifting is clean , just a little soft on the second gear. I went with orange fury, the color is a head turner. AS, I said at the beginning this replaced my Carrera and the ride feel between these cars is night and day. The Porsche was light and nimble the Mustang is heavier and you can feel the push in turns.Read less
