With its fuel-efficient engine lineup, extensive options sheet and cleanly styled interior, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring is a big improvement over last year's model. However, in areas like driving dynamics and materials quality, it still lags behind the import-brand competition.

For many years, the Chrysler Sebring has been an underwhelming choice for a midsize sedan due to its unrefined nature and drab design. For 2007, however, Chrysler has executed a full redesign in hopes of making this mainstream vehicle more competitive. The 2007 Sebring is now based on a lengthened and widened version of the front-wheel-drive Dodge Caliber platform. Although the Sebring is only available as a sedan for '07, the convertible should return within a year or two.

Three engines are available: a 173-horsepower, 2.4-liter four-cylinder; a 189-hp, 2.7-liter V6; and a 235-hp, 3.5-liter V6. Equipping a Sebring with either the 2.4-liter or 2.7-liter results in up to 30 mpg on the highway, but your only transmission choice is a relatively low-tech four-speed automatic. Sebrings with the 3.5-liter V6 qualify for a new six-speed automatic, however, and still earn a respectable 19/28 EPA rating.

Cabin space is also much improved in the '07 Sebring, which has as much headroom and legroom as any sedan in this class. Its narrow body is still short on hip and shoulder room, though, and the trunk measures just 13.6 cubic feet. The design of the cabin is clean and ergonomically sound, but interior plastics are behind the curve for this price range.

The equipment list is fairly impressive, as all Sebrings come with ABS, a tire-pressure monitor, front-seat side airbags, full-length head curtain airbags, air-conditioning, a CD player, an input jack for MP3 players, cruise control and a tilt/telescoping steering wheel. An extensive options list includes everything from predictable extras like stability control, satellite radio and remote start capability to more unusual items like front cupholders that can warm your latte or chill your cola, and a Harman Kardon-designed, hard drive-based navigation and audio system with real-time traffic rerouting and 20GB of MP3 file storage.

Even with all these features, though, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring comes up a bit short in the midsize sedan segment. It lacks the kind of innovation we've seen in cars like the PT Cruiser and 300, which makes its middling performance credentials and ordinary cabin accommodations all the more obvious. Alongside better-known competitors like the Accord, Camry, Nissan Altima and Mazda 6, that's a liability. Only when pitted against less expensive players like the Chevrolet Malibu, Ford Fusion and Hyundai Sonata does the Sebring stack up better. Overall, however, we think there are simply better choices for a midsize sedan than the '07 Sebring.

A midsize sedan, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring is offered in base, Touring and Limited trim levels. Base cars start you out with 16-inch steel wheels, a tilt/telescoping steering wheel, air-conditioning, a CD stereo with an MP3 player input jack, cruise control and full power accessories. Sebring Touring models get 17-inch alloy wheels, stain-resistant cloth upholstery, an extra pair of stereo speakers, LED cabin lighting and a lengthier options list. The top-of-the-line Limited provides leather upholstery, a power driver seat, single-zone automatic climate control, Boston Acoustics speakers, Sirius satellite radio and, in a nod to the 300C, tortoise-shell interior accents. All but the accents are optional on the Touring.

The Sebring's lengthy options list includes an in-dash CD/DVD audio changer, a rear-seat entertainment system, a sunroof, heated front seats, Bluetooth (known as UConnect), heated/cooled front cupholders and remote start. The most interesting option available on Touring and Limited models is a Harman Kardon-designed navigation/audio system (known as MyGIG) with real-time traffic updates (via Sirius) and a 20GB hard drive that allows owners to rip their own CDs or download MP3 files from a jump drive using a USB port.

Standard on all 2007 Chrysler Sebrings is a 2.4-liter inline four-cylinder engine rated for 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. Optional on the Sebring Touring is a 2.7-liter V6 good for 189 hp and 191 lb-ft of torque. With either of these engines, a four-speed automatic transmission routes power to the front wheels. Available on the Limited model only is a 3.5-liter V6 capable of 235 hp and 232 lb-ft of torque. In addition to earning you the right to have a more sophisticated six-speed automatic transmission, opting for the top-line V6 provides a stiffer suspension and 18-inch wheels and tires. Chrysler claims a 0-60-mph time of 7.7 seconds for Sebrings with the 3.5-liter engine. Equipped with the 2.7-liter, the car takes about a second longer to perform the feat.

Antilock brakes and a tire-pressure monitor are standard on Chrysler's midsize sedan. All four-cylinder models come with front disc/rear drum brakes, while Sebrings equipped with either V6 upgrade to four-wheel discs. Also standard are front-seat side airbags and full-length head curtain airbags. Stability control is optional.

Although the base four-cylinder delivers the best fuel economy, we think most buyers will be put off by its sluggish response and coarse power delivery. A better choice for most people is the 2.7-liter V6 available on the Touring: Refinement still isn't a strong point, but with this engine, the 2007 Chrysler Sebring feels much stronger when merging and passing at highway speeds. Still, the 3.5-liter V6 is far and way the best power plant in the lineup for those who can swing it. The top V6 is still a tad light on off-the-line pull, but it's plenty satisfying once it revs up and considerably smoother than the smaller engines.

Ride quality is among the Sebring's strong points, as it's smooth and composed at high speeds. Handling is average as midsize sedans go, with moderate body roll around corners and decently weighted steering. Those who like to drive will prefer the 3.5-liter V6-equipped Limited, which feels sharper through the turns. Braking is an area in which the Sebring could stand to improve. On four-cylinder models, the brakes fade quickly with heavy use, and although the full-disc setup on V6 models holds up better, stopping distances are still long for this class.

Clean if unremarkable, the Sebring's cabin is defined by a simple control layout, comfortable front seats and mediocre materials. In Sebrings with the multi-featured MyGIG navigation/audio system, it only takes a few minutes to figure out how to enter an address or rip a CD onto the hard drive, thanks to the simple menus and instructions. The rear seat is spacious enough to accommodate a pair of adults, although the seat-bottom cushion is a bit too low for comfort and the outboard head restraints are nonadjustable. Partially compensating for the Sebring's small 13.6-cubic-foot trunk is the ability to fold down both the 60/40-split rear seat and the front passenger seat.

Like so many of the new models we've driven within the past year or two, the 2007 Sebring practically antiquates its predecessor in every way. Still, on the list of things we like about the Sebring, its ride and handling characteristics aren't at the top. Compared to a direct competitor like the Saturn Aura, for instance, the Sebring is neither as comfortable on the highway nor as eager on a winding road. Furthermore, the cabin isn't as quiet and the powertrains aren't as smooth. On all those fronts the Sebring is far beyond acceptable, however, especially for anyone attracted more by its styling and amenities. In fact, loaded up with MyGIG, a rear-seat DVD system and the heated/cooled cupholder, some could argue that the Sebring offers the most stuff for the money in the entire segment.

MyGIG This optional hard drive-based system includes navigation with real-time traffic information, MP3/WMA music and JPEG image uploading, a high-speed USB 2.0 port, auxiliary audio input, voice-recognition, voice message recording and playback, Bluetooth hands-free cell phone connectivity and more.Rear-seat Entertainment The Sebring's rear-seat DVD video system - the first offered in a mid-size sedan - includes dual headphones plus audio and gaming capability.

With a passenger cabin defined by clean, contemporary styling and a generous helping of metallic-look trim (plus a few instances of average-grade plastics), the Sebring might not be as warm or welcoming as some of its competitors, but it's comfortable and attractive nonetheless. Complementing a host of available in-cabin technologies is a fold-flat passenger seat that can make laptop work easier (or help accommodate longer cargo). In between the base cloth and available leather seating, the Sebring offers an exceptionally stain-resistant seat fabric called YES Essentials. Limited models get a touch of tortoise shell-like trim.

Before its introduction, many figured the new Sebring would show up looking something like a scaled-down version of the Chrysler 300 large sedan that has been such a big hit for the automaker. According to company officials, however, that car's bold look just didn't downsize well. Instead, the Sebring adopts the general styling direction that now defines more than half the vehicles in the Chrysler lineup, a look that includes the grille, headlamps and distinctive hood strakes that made their debut on the pre-300 Chrysler Crossfire two-seater. Limited trim-level models are differentiated by chrome door handles, fog lamps and dual chrome exhaust outlets.

A base-equipped Sebring includes an AM/FM/CD/CD-MP3 sound system with auxiliary input jack, air conditioning, power windows/locks/mirrors, remote keyless entry, cruise control, four-way adjustable steering wheel, delayed-off headlamps, cloth seats and 16-inch covered steel wheels. Standard safety equipment includes front, front-side and side-curtain airbags.

The highlight of the Sebring's optional equipment list is the comprehensive MyGIG navigation, entertainment and communication system. Other standouts include a six-CD/DVD/MP3/SIRIUS satellite sound system, rear-seat DVD entertainment system, stand-alone Bluetooth cell phone connectivity, heated/cooled cupholder, heated front seats, leather seats and a moonroof.

The Sebring's base four-cylinder engine delivers highway mileage of up to 32 miles per gallon, the range-topping 3.5-liter V6 offers 235 horsepower and the 2.7-liter V6 balances the economy and power of the two while offering the Flex-Fuel capability of running on gasoline, E85 ethanol or any mixture of both. The 3.5-liter benefits from a new six-speed automatic transmission with Auto Stick manual-shift capability, while the other engines are matched to a traditional four-speed automatic. The 2007 Chrysler Sebring starts at a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 18,995 and will extend into the low $ 30,000 range for a Touring model loaded with a V6 and all the electronic goodies. Our prices have reflected real-world selling prices not more than a few hundred dollars shy of those MSRPs. Compared with category leaders Accord and Camry, the Sebring's higher feature content at any given price is countered in part by lower projected resale values.

Chrysler Sebring Overview and History

In terms of genesis, Chrysler is almost synonymous with an unwanted premature detonation. Amidst the depression of 1921 and the great collapse of 1929, when most car producers were facing extinction due to drastic decrease in sales, lack of resources and investors, a small company would try to make its way to the auto shows and into the American citizens' garages. Despite the economic meltdown that drove investors away and locked-down companies faster than a second Ice Age, the US auto market was mainly divided among two powers: the ever expanding GM and Ford.

The sum of such horrific conditions would have normally drove away contenders, but Walter P. Chrysler thought otherwise. Determined to get an equally slice of the market share pizza for himself, he exhibited a handsome car at the 1924 New York Auto Show. The automobile was none other than the Chrysler 70, the model that would drag the Chrysler name to he Pantheon of American car builders.

However, Chrysler wasn't born as Chrysler (from the company's standpoint). Facing a rapid and possibly permanent dissolution, the two initial companies held by Walter P., Maxwell and Chambers, merged to form a new entity that would later rub shoulders with its competitors at the time. The 70 model had an instant success that allowed the newly formed corporation to expand freely, unabated by the competition's efforts and much wider rage of automobiles.

The Chambers name was dropped, whist Maxwell was re-branded as a Plymouth. By 1931, the Plymouth brand had already become a fierce competitor in the small car segment and was insistently knocking on Ford stronghold's door, yelling to make room or evict the place. Although Ford was basically partying due to the high sales registered by their model A, the more advanced Plymouth did far better. Sporting hydraulic brakes, more flowing body lines and  a “floating power”engine, the Plymouth cast an awfully large cloud of doubt over Ford's headquarters.

The improvements brought by the Plymouth became so popular that other producers started using them as well. Citroen would later use Chrysler's patented “floating engine” technology that had the great advantage of reducing engine vibrations through the use of three rubber mounts that separated the engine from having direct contact with the chassis.

Chrysler did so good the following years that by the end of the 30's it had already surpassed Ford and moved to a comfortable second position. Almost unknowingly, Chrysler became a titan. The time to wrestle the no. 1 car manufacturer was near and Chrysler carefully readied its match.

However, what was designed as a model of crushing beauty was not well received by the American public. The 1934 Airflow model, a gorgeous curvy sparkling beauty failed to make an impact and consequently sales dropped faster than CBS dropped “The Will”.

Funnily enough, the public was not touched by a car that was way ahead of its time, at least as far as the bodywork was concerned. However, poor sales were efficiently countered once Chrysler released the Imperial model. Large, powerful and luxurious, it was an instant hit and catered for the need of a stand-out motorized social status statement, as well as a reliable day to day ride.

As soon as World War II was over Chrysler had entered a sales numbness, focusing more on research and engineering improvements rather than holding the company's position as a top car industry leader. The post WW II days brought along some significant changes in auto design and shape, with a legendary tail fin craze initiated by Ford and GM.

In response to the existing trends, Chrysler's automobiles became longer and wider and sacrificed performance and reliability for looks. This happened because of a shift in the consumers' perspective who came to prefer style and exterior features over practicality and quality. The by know well established Chrysler products were removed to make way for a new range of flashy cars that failed to climb to the height of the precedent line-up. In doing so, Chrysler was pushed back to the third place once more.

By the beginning of the 60's, Chrysler made a comeback with the introduction of the spectacularly enduring, fast and well balanced 300-F. Though some drivers complained about the vehicle's great size, its performance was hard if not impossible to contest. The machine could develop 400 hp and its acceleration was phenomenal.

Once the modern times arrived, Chrysler proved its versatility and changed once with the automotive industry, delivering quality vehicles for an ever increasing mass of enthusiasts. Models such as the Sebring, 300M, 300C and PT Cruiser, a vehicle conceived as a blend of modern technology and retro style elements, managed to keep Chrysler among the top choices within US borders. Unlike other American car brands, such as Cadillac, Buick or Lincoln, Chrysler has received a great deal of attention overseas as well. During the 90's, the company merged with Daimler-Benz AG and formed Daimler Chrysler, which is currently a world leader in transportation.

2007 Sebring is full of Sexappeal
It's love at first sight with this car. The exterior design is sleek, smooth, and seductive. The '07 Sebring is right at home riding along side any other luxury sedan that you may encounter while riding around town. Once my wife and I sat inside the car we found it to be comfortable for our size(I'm 6'3/225) and it still leaves room for our girls in the back .Easy to read instrument panel and easy to reach dash controls. Driver seat manual controls for the base model are adequate, and the 2.4L engine rates about a seven getting on the interstate. The steering is tight and moves when you move and the gas mileage is excellent.I would recommend anyone to take the sebring out on a date and enjoy the day

End of the boring Sebring...
I'm a proud FORD owner, however my family works at JEEP and I get the EC discount. I leased my Sebring for 159 a month and the 2006 model is VERY boring. This 2007 model grabs from the 300C and the Crossfire. Its very affordable. The people that don't like this car because they want BMW or AUDI style and performance and want to pay like a KIA. Seriously give this car a try, this comes from a FORD person. FYI go for the V6 its much better!

2007 Sebring
After driving a van for the past 7 years it was nice to go back to a sedan. We love the look. It is sporty and the front seat sits higher than most sedans. For being a small sedan it gives the driver and passenger plenty of room. I am really pleased with the overall performance of the car. It doesn't feel like the 4 cylinder engines I was used to.

2007 Chrysler Sebring
"The greatest car that I've ever owned."
I have never thought to buy and drive a Chrysler, especially that I am from Europe and I didn't trust so much in the American cars. I had two cars before (two times Ford Mondeo) but when I found out and seen this Chrysler Sebring on the internet I falled in love with it right away. I got a 2007 Chrysler Sebring 2.0 CRD, Diesel at 140hp. It was a new and good experience. Chrysler Sebring is the most beautiful and lovely car I have ever owned. It is more than comfortable, too much space inside and a big trunk. It it the King of the roads in my little town! If there's something that I do not like is too much plastic inside and cheap things... But I don't care too much about it. I like the car and I would buy it again and again..
