The Legacy is a model of car that suffers from multiple personality disorder; half family sedan, half sport-utility wagon, this car has a lot of diversity. Try to imagine another lineup of vehicles that competes with both the Toyota Camry and the Jeep Cherokee for customers. Not too many are there?

Stying on the Legacy sedan is attractive, and the availablity of AWD on any trim-level makes this car as desirable as any Toyota Camry or Honda Accord. Unlike the Camry and Accord, however, the Legacy doesn't have the power to match its sharp handling and good looks. An optional six-cylinder engine, or better yet the resurrection of the 2.2 L turbo, would inject much needed vigor into an otherwise desirable family of cars.

The mainstay of the Legacy lineup is the wagon, for thirteen years Subaru has sold more wagons in the US than any other importer. The AWD wagon in general, and the Outback wagon in particular, is Subaru's response to the sport-utility shopper. AWD, optional ABS, improved ground clearance, and a host of safety features not generally found on a truck, make the Outback wagon a decent choice for anyone looking for the utiltity of a wagon, the comfort of a car, and the capabilities of a light truck.

We think that the Legacy's AWD sedans and wagons are a great idea, we just wish that they were a little bit faster.

Subaru Legacy Overview and History

Subaru actually means “unite” and it refers to the six stars on the logo that stand for the 6 companies that are united under the FHI group. The largest of the stars represents Fuji Heavy Industries. The company started out in 1917 in Japan as a aircraft research laboratory but soon moved to producing airplanes.

After WWII, the company created a scooter, the Fuji Rabbit with the spare parts from airplanes. Pretty soon, the company split up into different business that manufactured scooters, coaches, engines and chassis. Then CEO Kenji Kita decided that it would be a good idea to get involved in car making and pretty soon the first Subaru car was created, the Subaru 1500 (1954).

The 1500 or P1 was followed by the 360 in 1958, the Sambar in 1961, the 1000 in 1965, gthe 1100 and the R2 in 1969. During the 70s, the Leone came out and then later, in the 80s, the Alcyclone (1985) and the Legacy (1989) were added to the Subaru line-up.

Slowly, in the 90s, the company moved away from the manufacture of small vehicles and concentrated on rally cars, such as the Vivio and Impreza. Different versions of the Impreza WRX won the world championship several times under drivers such as Colin McRae.

Using the technology from the aeronautical industry, Subaru employed many successful inventions in the automotive industry. One of the first was the us of horizontally opposed “boxer” engines as well as the use of monocoque construction. Also, Subaru is the only car manufacturer to offer all-wheel drive as a standard on most of its models. The Japanese manufacturer was also the first to introduce electronic continuously variable transmission (ECTV) which replaces standard gears and gives smooth acceleration while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

Subaru also takes a keen interest in environmental protection, having achieved an odd  record: 0 landfill status for their plant in Lafayette, Indiana which means that the factory generates no trash. Also, the company has an extensive recycling program for its own cars, not to mention the program for hybrid and fuel efficient cars.

BEAST
It's strange... Looks like a Jeep Cherokee on the outside, feels like Honda on the inside, & drives like a Sherman Tank. The Pros outweigh the Cons, as this is one of the most reliable, safest, & unstoppable vehicles ever made. (Just youtube the words "Outback/Snow/Ice")

Keeps stalling
I have owned this car for only 5 months and it has been a horrible experience. Its check engine light keeps coming on. I changed master air flow, a wire, the differential, and the main computer. The car is still stalling in traffic and other most inopportune places. I bought this car for my daughter's 21 birthday and she has only driven it maybe two weeks out of owning the car. What else could it be!!!!

Climb a tree if you hit it right!
This was the second car i ever owned and after a Hyundai Elantra this eas a god send. The 4 cylinders are great on gas especially on the highway. I took it mudding because i was young and kept up with a 4x4 bronco in the mud. I kept the gas down and it kept moving. I had alot of fun on ice as well, the awd is remarkable. I put alot of wear into that car but it never let up. I wrecked the suspension(totally my fault!) but it took a serious beating. also destroyed the bearings which where a cheap fix. lifters ticked after 157,000 miles with an oil leak. coolant problems at 175,000 miles but a new radiator for 1oo bucks self installed corected this. I sold it cheap. Loved the car. Great buy!

Love this car!
I live in Maine and needed a car that could withstand our weather. I bought my '96 in December because I had heard good reviews about Subaru's. My dad was unsure about it because he had never worked on a Subaru before, but quickly changed his mind when he drove it in the snow. It doesn't shift very smoothly (for an automatic) anymore and the 2.5 likes the liquids a little more than I prefer. The check engine light has been on since I got the car (the previous owner said it was because of an oil leak) and the gas mileage is comparable to a half ton Dodge pick-up truck, but I still love this car.

1999 Subaru Legacy
"Best vehicle during my 74 years!"
I am 2nd owner. Bought at 72k odometer in 2006. Retired military enlisted. Truly the very Best vehicle I have ever owned. A trustworthy machine. Traction Is astounding with winter tires on. Corners like a real sports-car. Looks very snazzy and very cool. Distinctively Subie looks. Single color spruce-green. Don't waste money on other brands. I would keep mine over any new car. I trust it.

1998 Subaru Legacy
"Your first car ."
The 1998 Subaru Legacy is a very decent car with an oddball four-cylinder engine and AWD.Is just the right amount of quirkiness if this car was a person it would be old enough to get a drink but yet it’s still rides like a dream with soft and cushy suspension and also considering the fact it doesn’t have power steering it handles well in the city. Has enough horsepower to pass people with relative ease . Its also a very comfortable car to sit in. The reliability on this car is just average. For the most part this car is pretty well done and makes a decent first car!

1997 Subaru Legacy
"Handling and all weather ability second to none"
Absolutely the best all-around handling vehicle I have driven. I've driven lots of fancy sports cars, and nothing compares to my 1997 Legacy GT wagon. Its performance was the best kept secret in the auto world, and that's too bad for Subaru. It's not a fast accellerator. But who cares. It handles so well, and has such terrific steering feel, you can go faster around every turn -- and have a heck of a good time -- cuz this car handles like a BMW, only better. You can't buy a vehicle like this anymore, with such superb steering feel, cornering, and emergency handling, and exceptional all-weather capability. They don't exist, because steering is drive-by-wire now. This vehicle, this model year, is not. And, not only does it handle well, it tackles any weather or surface with ease. My wagon sticks to wet, snowy, and muddy roads like glue. In that regard, it puts every SUV and 4x4 I've driven to shame. I bought my Legacy used in 2002, and I've driven it through raging blizzards on unplowed highways and up steep muddy pig paths (and I drive it on winding bumpy mountain dirt and paved roads daily) and it handles everything with zero problems, never slipping or sliding, always safe and solid. Never squirrely. In emergency situations, this car's exceptional handling will save your life. It has saved mine more than once. I will never sell my Subie. I've had to replace the engine twice. And I'll replace it any number of times in the future, because that cost is still way cheaper, and the car is far better than, anything new. It's my car for life.Read less
