Thanks to a long list of improvements, the updated 2011 Dodge Charger is a great choice for a performance-oriented full-size sedan.

They say some things get better with age. The 2011 Dodge Charger is a good example. When this sporty full-size sedan debuted back in 2005, it marked both the return of a revered nameplate from the brand's muscle car glory days and a shift to an old-school rear-wheel-drive platform after years of less-than-inspiring front-wheel-drive four-doors. Now Dodge designers and engineers have taken what was a passable family car and made it significantly better by addressing a number of the outgoing model's shortcomings.

One of the most significant of these changes is the introduction of an all-new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 that takes the place of the outgoing model's 2.7-liter and 3.5-liter V6s. With 292 horsepower on tap -- an increase of 114 hp and 42 hp respectively over the previous V6 engines -- this new powertrain becomes a fine alternative to the Charger R/T's carryover 5.7-liter V8.

The Charger's interior has also received a makeover, with handsome styling and soft-touch materials replacing the bland look and hard plastics that gave the previous cabin a low-budget feel. The list of standard features and options has been substantially upgraded as well, and now includes the latest high-tech bells and whistles, including the Sirius Travel Link service that accesses info from local gas prices to live weather radar images. Equally nifty is the available Cross Traffic Alert system that makes backing out of a blind parking space much less stressful.

The most noticeable change regards the Charger's new exterior styling. This new version sports a more aggressive-looking front end, prominent scallops on the hood and side panels, along with a new taillight treatment that features 164 bright LEDs arranged in a distinctive pattern.

All these improvements are particularly well timed, helping the 2011 Dodge Charger become a prime choice in the full-size sedan segment. The Ford Taurus is also offered in both mainstream and high-performance (SHO) versions, but head-to-head the Charger represents the more appealing and dynamic choice. Of course, buyers who value practicality over performance will be better served by sedans like the 2011 Honda Accord, 2011 Hyundai Sonata and 2011 Nissan Altima. But just the same, we think all these changes -- combined with a lower MSRP -- have made the 2011 Charger the best yet.

The 2011 Dodge Charger is a large sedan that's offered in two basic trim levels: SE and R/T. Entry-level SE models are rear-wheel-drive only, while the R/T can be had with a choice of rear- or all-wheel drive.

SE base models are reasonably well-equipped with 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, air-conditioning, cloth upholstery, a power driver seat, a 60/40-split-folding rear seat, cruise control, full power accessories, a trip computer, keyless ignition/entry, remote engine start and a six-speaker sound system with a CD player, an iPod interface, an auxiliary audio jack and a 4.3-inch touchscreen interface.

The R/T model comes with a V8 engine, a performance-tuned suspension, 18-inch alloy wheels (19-inch on AWD models), xenon headlights, foglights and a rear spoiler (RWD models only). Inside there's automatic dual-zone climate control, heated front seats, a power-adjustable front passenger seat, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, Bluetooth and a premium Alpine sound system with an 8.4-inch touchscreen, voice control and satellite radio.

The options list is long and arranged into more than a dozen packages and equipment groups that bundle together just about every comfort and convenience feature you might possibly want. Highlights include 18-, 19- and 20-inch wheels, a Super Track Pack that gets you high-performance brakes, suspension components and tires, a rear back-up camera, rear park assist and a sunroof. Inside, available options include leather upholstery, heated front seats, a heated steering wheel, heated and cooled cupholders and power-adjustable pedals. Other options include adaptive cruise control with front collision warning, a blind spot warning system with rear cross-traffic alert, a Garmin-sourced navigation system with Sirius Travel Link service, and a nine-speaker Alpine surround-sound audio system.

The good news with this option package arrangement is that it's possible to load an SE base model up with virtually all the goodies offered on the top-of-the-line R/T. The bad news, of course, is that you may end up paying for optional features you don't want in order to get the ones you do.

The 2011 Dodge Charger's powertrain choices have been greatly simplified. SE models come with an all-new 3.6-liter V6 that puts out 292 hp and 260 pound-feet of torque. R/T versions get a 5.7-liter V8 that puts out 370 hp and 395 lb-ft. Both engines are backed by a five-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift feature that sends power to the rear wheels. All-wheel drive is offered for the V8-powered R/T.

Standard safety features for the Charger include electronic stability/traction control, antilock brakes, side-impact airbags for front seat passengers, a driver-side knee airbag, side curtain airbags and active front head restraints.

There are also a number of safety-related options available, including adaptive cruise control with forward collision warning and a blind-zone alert system. New rear cross-path detection sensors also sound a warning tone when vehicles or pedestrians are approaching while you're backing out of a parking space.

It should come as no surprise that the 2011 Dodge Charger R/T is great fun to drive thanks to its 5.7-liter V8. This big V8 gives the R/T impressive acceleration for such a big car. What's unexpected, however, is that the new 3.6-liter V6 engine under the hood of the SE has enough guts to make it a fine alternative. Then again, the fact that the V6 is expected to offer only a slight improvement in fuel economy compared to the big V8 may ultimately make the point moot for all but the most budget-conscious buyers.

The other pleasant surprise is that the Charger's recalibrated suspension manages to deliver a good balance between ride comfort and entertaining handling. While the car's steering feel leaves something to be desired, the fact that hard-core enthusiasts can upgrade to stouter brakes, suspension components and rear-axle ratios arguably makes the Charger the most fun-to-drive family car you can buy.

The designers at Dodge have given the Charger's interior a classier feel by replacing many hard plastic surfaces with softer-touch materials. The look has also been stylishly updated, and the controls -- including those for the optional Garmin-sourced navigation system -- are still logically arranged and simple to operate. The addition of details like standard keyless ignition/entry and the huge 8.4-inch dash-mounted touchscreen also help reinforce the up-to-the-minute design.

What hasn't changed is the car's basic layout, which is a good thing as it creates a spacious cabin with a backseat that offers adult-size legroom. Unfortunately, the Charger's sloping roof line reduces rear seat headroom, though it shouldn't be much of a problem for sub-6-foot passengers. At 15.4 cubic feet, the trunk is on the small side for a large sedan. That said, 60/40-split-folding rear seatbacks are standard for those times when you need more room.

While the 370-horsepower 5.7-liter Hemi V8 offers heart-pounding performance, the new 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 will both amaze and delight those budget-conscious consumers who opt for the SE model. With 292 horses on tap, it's 42 horsepower stronger than last year's V6 and offers acceleration once found only in exotic sports cars. The engine is silky smooth at idle and purrs seductively at full throttle. Gear selection is handled by a five-speed Auto Stick transmission, which does a good job of finding and holding the right gears when climbing hills or navigating stop-and-go traffic. We were not impressed by the Auto Stick's manual mode, however, finding gear selection to be somewhat sluggish. The Charger's steering response has always been among the best in its class, and improvements to the suspension and steering gear only serve to make a good system better. Still, the Charger is a big, heavy car and you'll feel it dip and sway when pushed hard into tight turns. We also felt the suspension might be a bit too firm for some.

Garmin NavigationThe UConnect 8.4N radio features an enormous eight-inch touch screen with navigation supplied by Garmin. A simple and intuitive interface plus voice-activated controls for the phone, radio and Sirius Travel Link make this one of the best factory navigation systems we've tested.Super Track PacThis optional R/T package turns the Charger into a track-ready player, adding P245/45R20 Goodyear Eagle F1 summer tires, 20-inch wheels, high-performance monotube shock absorbers, larger front and rear stabilizer bars, performance brake linings, performance steering and three-mode electronic stability control (ESC).

Where shades of gray and dull plastic finishes once defined the Charger, the 2011 model is all about color, quality and comfort. Soft touch panels can be found throughout the car and the front seats include noticeably larger side bolsters The new three-spoke steering wheel features a nice, thick rim and houses controls for the audio, cruise control, Bluetooth and the driver information center. The Charger's new instrument panel is wide and flat, paying homage to the '68 Charger, and is covered in an attractive one-piece aluminum bezel. The centerpiece of the dash is an available 8.4-inch touch screen that incorporates navigation by Garmin as well as controls for the UConnect infotainment system. The 2011 Dodge Charger's spacious back seat can comfortably fit two adults, although the sloping rear roofline somewhat limits headroom for taller passengers.

The 2011 Dodge Charger mimics much of the dramatic exterior styling that first appeared on the original 1999 Charger concept car. Deep scallops grace the Charger's sides and hood, while a "Coke bottle" beltline runs the full length of the car. Around back, a single-piece tail lamp reminiscent of the classic 1968 Charger runs the width of the car and uses 164 illuminated LED lights to form a racetrack graphic. The SE V6 rides on 17-inch painted aluminum wheels, while the R/T trim has 18-inch chrome-clad wheels and the all-wheel-drive R/T comes with 19-inch wheels. Fitting with the car's performance nature, Dodge has lowered the Charger's ride height and lessened the once-obvious wheel arch gap on the all-wheel-drive models.

The base model 2011 Dodge Charger SE features a 292-horsepower V6 engine, five-speed Auto Stick transmission, cruise control, vehicle information center, keyless Enter-N-Go, remote start, six-speaker audio with 4.3-inch touch screen, AM/FM/CD/MP3 player, USB with iPod control and auxiliary audio input jacks, six-way power driver's seat, 60/40 split-folding rear seat, tilt and telescopic steering wheel, and 17-inch wheels. R/T trims add 18- or 19-inch wheels, a 370-horsepower Hemi V8, 12-way power front seats, dual-zone automatic temperature control, Alpine audio with 8.4-inch touch screen, Bluetooth hands-free phone connectivity and fog lamps.

There are a number of option packages for the base SE, including the Enforcer Package. This features black 20-inch painted wheels, blackout grille, a performance tuned suspension and a nine-speaker, 506-watt Alpine audio system. The Rallye Package adds UConnect audio with 8.4-inch touch screen, dual-zone automatic climate control, six-speaker Alpine audio, 12-way power front seats, heated front seats, heated side mirrors and 18-inch wheels. The R/T can be equipped with a number of upgrades including the Road and Track package that adds performance-oriented 3.06 axle ratio, supportive front seats with suede inserts and blackout honeycomb grille. Other popular options include a power sunroof, Adaptive cruise control, Garmin navigation, leather seating, heated rear seats, heated steering wheel and all-wheel drive.

The 2011 Dodge Charger is powered by a choice of two engines. The entry-level SE features the new Pentastar 3.6-liter V6. Arguably the best V6 engine ever produced by Chrysler, this engine produces an amazing 292 horsepower and 260 pounds-feet of torque, yet still delivers 27 miles per gallon in the government's highway driving cycle. The Charger's 5.7-liter Hemi V8, has been tweaked this year to produce 370 horsepower and 395 pounds-feet of torque, more than enough to propel this big muscle car from zero to 60 miles per hour in less than six seconds. The HEMI engine also features a fuel saving mechanism that deactivates four of the eight cylinders when cruising under a light load. Both engines are coupled to a five-speed Auto Stick automatic transmission with manual shift mode. 3.6-liter V6292 horsepower @ 6350 rpm260 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/27 (gasoline), 13/19 (E85)5.7-liter Hemi V8370 horsepower @ 5250 rpm395 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4200 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/25 (FWD), 15/23 (AWD)

The 2011 Dodge Charger SE has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of just over $ 26,000, while the Rallye Package begins around $ 28,500. The R/T starts closer to $ 31,000. A fully loaded R/T can easily approach the $ 40,000 mark. This compares favorably with the Ford Taurus and Taurus SHO, which start around $ 26,000 and $ 38,500 respectively. A nicely loaded Hyundai Sonata SE 2.0T, however, starts under $ 25,000 and offers more standard equipment than the Charger SE. To get the best deal, be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what consumers in your area are currently paying for the 2011 Dodge Charger. Also, be sure to click on the Incentives tab to see what deals the manufacturer is offering. As for resale, we expect the 2011 Dodge Charger to do slightly better than the previous generation car, but still fall short of the values currently held by the Honda Accord, Hyundai Sonata and Toyota Camry.

2011 Dodge Charger Future Generations

Dodge Charger Overview and History

The second-generation Dodge Charger (LX) underwent a series of exterior changes, with the most important updates being applied to the front fascia and the rear end, translating into a redesigned grille and hood and the introduction of the brand’s “racetrack” taillights.
Dodge practically patented the muscle car. Little did they know they would become one of America's top Automobile manufacturers and that the Charger model, for example, particularly the 66-67 one, would trigger jaw dropping amazement at its sight. John Francis and Horace Elgin Dodge were making bikes in 1901 when they decided to move their company, the Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan.

Before Cadillac would outrun Dodge in engine development years later, the Brothers were supplying car parts for many producers. Their early involvement in the process of making cars lead them to starting their own business, entering the queue for a large order of recognition and notoriety. Setting the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company in 1914 brought them a step closer to the counter.

The first Dodge automobiles shared some of Ford Model T's features but outran the latter in terms of ignition and other improvements meant to ease driving. One of the major advantages Dodge offered was a smooth, electrical start rather than the sluggishly classic crank start. Built for the middle class, the cars quickly became a commercial success, mainly due the clever blend of reliable ruggedness, engine improvements and style elements.

By 1917, Dodge had produced enough cars to start thinking expanding in other car-manufacturing areas. Trucks seemed like something they could successfully take on and the Dodge truck division came to being. Dodge trucks were used by the US army during the First World War after which they kept being used as commercial vehicles.

The Dodge brothers sold their business to Dillon, Read & company for the astoundingly large sum of  $ 146 million, said to be the largest amount in history to have been paid at the time. Dillon helmed Dodge management only for 3 years, passing the new acquisition to the Chrysler Corporation  on July 31, 1928.

Due to Chrysler's financial conquests over some European automotive groups, such as the British Rootes group and the French Simca, Dodge is introduced to Europe in the 60's. Lightweight commercial vehicles are sold here under a different badge. The Dodge 50 series is fairly well received in the UK, becoming a favorite for military and utility operations.

1977 brought forth the collapse of Chrysler's European subsidiary and its adjacent Dodge branch altogether. The Dodge factory as well as some rights to use the Dodge name were purchased by Renault who resumed the production of Dodge's commercial vehicles. However, Renault only made use of the Dodge name till the 80's when it gave up control over the name rights. Only the factory was kept.

Dodge is currently part of the DaimlerChrysler group and has been lately been know for its trucks rather than retro-future stylized muscle cars as it used to be know for during the 60's and 70's. Much like any other American car builder, Dodge garnered huge amounts of success at the time with the launch of the Charger and Coronet models, to name only a few.

As far as the company's current status is concerned, trucks make the most sales, representing 78% of the division's venue. Still undergoing intensive promotion in Europe, Dodge have sought to reach  the same type of customer it did back in the 70's by launching a series of  mean-looking, rowdy  road-tamers such as the Nitro and Caliber.

2011 Dodge Charger Consumer Reviews

2011 Charger RT (AWD) rocks!
I've had the 2011 Charger RT AWD (Max bundle, meaning fully loaded) for just under two weeks and am blown away by it. I've put just over 1,000 miles on it so far, and the Charger has surpassed every expectation I had for it. (And I set a pretty high bar.) The styling is totally standout and wows every single person who has seen the car -- even those who aren't into muscle cars and/or care about gas mileage. The interior design is outstanding, the fit and finish are of Audi levels -- I've had several Audis including most recently a 2005 Audi Allroad 4.2 -- and the Hemi, is a blast. The handling is solid and flat on curves and turns, and the pick-up, of course, is phenomenal.

RT Fuel Mileage better than expected
Don't let the V8 Hemi tag scare you off. The V8 has a fuel management system that shuts 4 cylinders down when not needed. On one open stretch of I-95 I bumped it down to 65mph and averaged between 31 and 33mpg. The system also kicks in while driving city roads around 30mph. The car has averaged about 21mpg in the city, just as good as many V6 models out there without the fuel management system. The car itself is great to drive. Fit and finish are excellent. The RT base package is all ones really needs- remote start, 8.4" Uconnect w/bluetooth, 18" alloy wheels, spoiler. A similarly equipped V6 will save you a few thousand dollars, but you'll get the value back with the RT at trade.

Best Car Ever
I have the 2011 R/T Road and Track special. It is the closest thing I could get to the SRT for 2011.(SRT returns in 2012) It has all available options including the Redline 3 paint. The car holds the road like it it glued to it. The redesign is near perfect. It turns heads everywhere I go. Overall the car is so much more than I expected. I bought this car while it was leaving the factory, sight unseen. I am still excited just to look at it, driving it is an absolute pleasure. Nice ride for cruising, raw rubber burning power for showing off. The legendary HEMI lives and breaths anew in this classic redesign that actually made the car much better.

2011 Dodge Charger
I just picked up a new 2011 Dodge Charger. Wow! Incredible vehicle! Great MPG 29.5 MPG from DC to Baltimore, fast (292HP), easy to use 8.3" touch screen controls heated seats and you can pause and rewind live music (Sirius) playing on the radio, handles the rough roads in DC and Baltimore like a very expensive car, old school power steering - you can make a U-turn with one hand, very quiet interior, black headliner. The racetrack/LED rear lights look very nice at night. One of the best vehicles that I have ever driven! 10 out of 10! People keep stopping me at red lights, gas stations, asking me how much it costs and how I like it. Pretty cool for a base medel, entry level vehicle (27H)
uncheckedseasoned,
Stylish even in 2021
Had this one back in 2013. Came with the 3.6L pentastar V6. The color was toxic orange which stood out and people actually notice it on the road or in the parking lot. Was standard since I got the SE. came with cloth seats which were alright and the 8.4 inch screen with navigation. Ended up putting a few things on the vehicle like a Setina push bar and a laptop mount along with removing the floor shifter and replace it with a column shifter I ended up getting from a local junk yard. Was a blast working with the car since there’s so much you can do with it rather performance or change the look of it. Issues: after 100,000 miles the engine started having some issues with the rockers which I worked on and got it fixed. Next the transmission started having some serious over heating issues. Did my normal Maint on the vehicle and this was changing the transmission fluid back at 50,000 miles. Not sure why that happened didn’t do a flush since it’s not really recommended on these trannys. Also had some bad electrical issues, always had a short somewhere ever since I bought the vehicle. Took it into the dealer a few times they told me “it’s normal don’t worry about it” which for me it’s a very big deal to always have the check engine light stay on. Besides these issues the vehicle was fine. Would still recommend to anyone if your looking for something that’s cheap and easy to work on.

Was impressed with vehicle from test drive
When I saw it I wanted it. I was impressed from the first test drive. It has been a solid vehicle, has given me no problems. For a full-sized car it performs very well with the V-6. It rides and handles very well. It is quiet and comfortable on trips. Fuel mileage is exceptional. This was the best bang for the buck in my opinion.

2019 Dodge Charger
"All American Muscle"
After so many years of German and Japanese family and sports sedans, I decided to go All American this year. Our family stable now consists of a Chevy Equinox, a Shelby Cobra, and this Daytona 392 Charger. This Charger is definitely powerful. The suspension is not, but the interior and exterior trim looks and feels good. I like the growling exhaust but my wife does not. It's quieter than my Cobra. :-) Mileage sucks at an average of 16 MPG. I was very surprised and quite impressed with the technology built into this car. Touch screen display is nice and the CarPlay feature is great with my iPhone. Overall, I'm quite happy with this car. We shall see how it handles winter here in Long Island, NY.

"Very sporty and fun to drive"
The car transmission is very impressive. The roar is nice when in sport. Breaks very good and runs even better.
