If a large sedan with raucous V8 power is your type of car, then the 2009 Dodge Charger should be at the top of your list.

When it debuted a few years ago, the latest Dodge Charger helped lead the, well, charge of rear-drive muscle cars as they made their way back from the grave. True, this four-door Charger sedan was a far cry from the huge two-door coupe adorned in orange paint and a Confederate flag in the "Dukes of Hazzard," but the spirit certainly lives on. For those who yearn for the good ol' days of good ol' boys and good ol' horsepower, the Charger's big-time power and brash styling represent a welcome revival.

Like its platform mates, the Chrysler 300 and the Dodge Challenger, the Charger comes with less muscular engines, but it's the big honking Hemi V8s that deserve the most attention. And for 2009, the "smaller" Hemi gets even better. Not only does it now make 368 horsepower, but variable valve timing and cylinder deactivation technology allow it to almost match the fuel economy of the 250-hp 3.5-liter V6. This certainly makes the 5.7-liter V8-powered Charger R/T the most attractive choice, but it also highlights how inefficient the two V6 engines are. Also new for 2009 is a revised all-wheel-drive system that can automatically or manually disconnect the front axle to slightly improve fuel economy and provide the better handling afforded by rear-wheel drive.

If you want a large sedan and V8 performance isn't a priority, we suggest looking beyond the Charger. Models like the Ford Taurus and Honda Accord are more practical choices. If, however, big boffo V8 power makes your heart jump, the 2009 Dodge Charger could be your car. Just be sure to check out Pontiac's G8 GT before you buy. In a recent comparison test of ours, the G8 outran last year's R/T in a straight line and handled dramatically better. No doubt a 2009 comparison would be closer given the Charger R/T's new power boost and the late-availability Performance Plus package that improves handling. Even so, we think the Pontiac remains numero uno in terms of being a true driver's car -- plus it costs less. So while the Charger once led the charge, it's no longer in the lead.

The 2009 Dodge Charger is a large sedan available in SE, SXT, R/T and SRT8 trim levels. Rear-wheel drive is standard, while the SXT and R/T are available with all-wheel drive. Standard equipment on the SE includes 17-inch alloy wheels, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a tilt and telescoping steering wheel, keyless entry, cruise control and a four-speaker stereo with a CD player and an auxiliary audio jack.

Stepping up to the SXT nets you a larger V6 engine, 18-inch wheels (AWD only), a 60/40 split-folding rear seat, foglamps, heated mirrors, power-adjustable pedals, a power driver seat and an upgraded six-speaker sound system with satellite radio. The SXT popular equipment groups adds 18-inch alloy wheels (RWD), automatic headlamps, a power passenger seat, heated front seats, leather upholstery, a leather-wrapped steering wheel and dual-zone automatic climate control. The Charger R/T includes all the SXT popular equipment group items as standard and adds the big 5.7-liter V8.

The SXT and the R/T share much of the same optional equipment. The protection group adds Bluetooth, self-sealing tires and side airbags. A sunroof, a touchscreen stereo interface with 30 GB of digital music storage, a rear-seat entertainment system with Sirius Backseat TV, and a navigation system with real-time traffic (the last two items require the popular equipment group on the SXT) are also available. The SXT DUB Edition adds 20-inch chrome-clad wheels, DUB exterior badges, embroidered leather seats and a 13-speaker Kicker sound system.

The R/T popular equipment package adds 18-inch chrome clad wheels, a compass, a trip computer, steering-wheel-mounted audio controls and a surround-sound audio system. Xenon headlights are a stand-alone option on the R/T. The road/track performance package includes 20-inch wheels, sport-tuned suspension and steering, heated performance sport seats and Alcantara upholstery. Bluetooth can be added to this package. The Daytona package is identical to the road/track package, but it adds a higher-performance exhaust, a unique exterior paint color and Daytona graphics. Chrysler says it will release another high-performance package later in the 2009 model year that will further enhance the Charger's steering, suspension and brakes.

The SRT8 is equipped a lot like the R/T with the road/track package, but adds the bigger Hemi V8, high-performance brakes, a hood scoop, a limited-slip rear differential and different exterior trim. The SRT8 Super Bee package adds 20-inch ultra-bright wheels, bright yellow or orange paint and Super Bee graphics.

The 2009 Dodge Charger is available with four engines, one for each trim level. Rear-wheel drive is standard, and all-wheel drive is optional on the SXT and R/T. The base SE gets a 2.7-liter V6 that produces 178 hp and 190 pound-feet of torque. A four-speed automatic is standard. Fuel economy with this engine is 18 mpg city/26 mpg highway and 21 mpg combined. The SXT is powered by a 3.5-liter V6 good for 250 hp and 250 lb-ft of torque. This engine gets a four-speed automatic with rear-wheel drive and a five-speed auto with all-wheel drive. Fuel economy ratings are 17/25/20 mpg with RWD and 17/23/19 mpg with AWD.

The Charger R/T is powered by a 5.7-liter V8 making 368 hp and 398 lb-ft of torque. A five-speed automatic is standard. Fuel economy rates 16/25/19 mpg with RWD and 16/23/18 with AWD. The Charger SRT8 is the king of the hill, with a 6.1-liter V8 that produces 425 hp and 420 lb-ft of torque. It, too, gets a five-speed auto. In track testing, the SRT8 went from zero to 60 mph in 5.3 seconds. Its fuel economy ratings are 13/19/15 mpg.

Antilock disc brakes, traction control and stability control are standard on all Chargers except for the base SE, which has them as options. SXT, R/T and SRT8 models can be equipped with self-sealing tires, front-seat side airbags and side curtain airbags.

In government crash tests, the 2009 Dodge Charger achieved a perfect five stars for frontal crash protection and rear side crash protection. It got four stars for front side protection. In the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety frontal-offset crash tests, the Charger received a top score of "Good." The Charger received a rating of "Poor" in the IIHS side-impact test. Both the IIHS and government side crash tests were conducted without the optional side airbags.

With an abundance of torque and rear-drive power reaching the asphalt, the V8-powered 2009 Dodge Charger R/T delivers grins and giggles in equal measure for enthusiasts who appreciate neck-snapping thrust as well as the extra utility of a four-door-sedan body style. However, most of that fun is had in a straight line, as even in SRT8 and R/T forms, the Charger's light and uncommunicative steering doesn't provide much confidence. With the Charger, you'll never forget you're piloting a large 2-ton sedan.

In terms of engines, the 3.5-liter V6 is a decent choice for those on a tight budget, but keep in mind that it's not particularly powerful or fuel-efficient. Considering the R/T's horsepower upgrades this year, it's now the obvious pick of the regular Charger litter. The SRT8 is still the top dog, but its much higher price is hard to justify considering the relatively minor increase in performance over the R/T.

Thanks to some much-needed improvements last year, the Charger's cabin features materials of pleasing quality and simple controls. The styling is on the bland side, however. The seats are very comfy, and those included with the road/track package and in the SRT8 provide lots of snug lateral support. The Charger's large size and long wheelbase translate into a generously sized cabin with plenty of rear legroom. Unfortunately, the Charger's sloping roof line makes rear-seat access more challenging than in other sedans, and rear headroom is a bit less than normal as well. The trunk can hold 16 cubic feet of luggage, an average figure for a large sedan.

Say what you will about the Charger SRT8's Mercedes-Benz inspired suspension and steering components, when it comes to power, the car's HEMI engine is 100-percent red-blooded American muscle at its best. With a reported zero to 60 mile-per-hour time in the five-second range, it's nearly impossible not to get excited climbing behind the wheel each morning. Beyond its blisteringly quick performance, the Charger SRT8's capable suspension allows it to run circles around average family sedans. The steering feel is direct and precise, with little play in the heavily weighted system. Braking is also first-rate, aided by huge four-piston Brembo disc brakes. Although the Charger SRT8 makes a livable daily driver, interior sound levels are noticeably higher than in the base car.

Sport SeatsThe nicely bolstered sport seats are still wide enough to fit full-sized bodies and feature lumbar support for both the driver and passenger. Super Bee PackageWith more horsepower-per-liter than the original 426 street HEMI of the 1960s, the Charger SRT8 presents the perfect canvas on which to resurrect the Super Bee package.

In keeping with the SRT8's muscle car image, Dodge outfits the roomy interior with a set of aggressively bolstered front bucket seats complete with the SRT8 logo embossed on the head restraints, grippy suede inserts and bright red stitching. Befitting the SRT8's additional power, the revised white-faced instrument cluster gauges include a 180 miles-per-hour speedometer, although we don't recommend you attempt to reach this figure unless you're a qualified driver on a proper track. The dash and door panels are nearly identical to the standard Charger, which is to say they are awash in dull gray plastics that lack the high-end look and feel one might expect in a $ 41,000 vehicle.

The 2009 Dodge Charger SRT8 builds on the already sporty Charger design by adding an aggressive front end and a prominent wide hood scoop. Integrated into the lower front bumper are functional air intakes that deliver cool air to the Brembo front disc brakes. The SRT8 sits lower to the ground than the base Charger and wears 20-inch wheels surrounded by Z-rated performance rubber. Around back, the SRT8 gains a rear-wing spoiler and dual 3.5-inch exhaust outlets.

The 2008 Dodge Charger SRT8's long list of standard amenities includes a 6.1-liter HEMI V8 engine, five-speed AutoStick transmission, four-wheel anti-lock Brembo disc brakes (ABS), traction control, Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and 20-inch aluminum wheels with Z-rated performance tires. Also featured is a rear spoiler, power windows, power door locks, power-adjustable pedals, keyless entry, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, heated leather and suede sport seats, remote start, fog lamps and an eight-way power driver's seat. The standard audio includes an AM/FM stereo with single CD and six Boston Acoustics speakers driven by a 276-watt amplifier.

Notable options include a power sunroof, rear-seat video system, 11-speaker Kicker Mobile Surround Sound and 200-watt subwoofer, heated front seats, front and rear side-curtain airbags, six-disc CD changer with MP3 capability, DVD navigation, uconnect hands-free communication system, SIRIUS Satellite Radio, SIRIUS Backseat TV and the Super Bee Special Edition Package.

The SRT8's HEMI (so named for its hemispherical combustion chambers) is related to the 5.7-liter engine used in the Dodge Charger R/T. The SRT division begins with a stronger engine block, then enlarges the cylinder bore, thus increasing displacement to 6.1 liters. Engineers then add numerous performance parts, including revised intake and exhaust manifolds, high-flow cylinder heads, a high-performance camshaft, a forged-steel crankshaft and reinforced connecting rods. While output is undeniable, without the 5.7-liter Multi-Displacement System technology, fuel consumption is less than stellar.6.1-liter V8425 horsepower @ 6200 rpm420 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 13/19

The 2009 Dodge Charger SRT8's Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starts around $ 41,000. The Super Bee Package adds another $ 2,000 and, when loaded with popular options such as navigation, power sunroof, rear-seat entertainment system and upgraded audio, the SRT8's price tag can go as high as $ 46,000. To be sure you make your best deal on the 2009 Dodge Charger SRT8, check the Fair Purchase Price, which shows the typical transaction prices others in your area are paying for theirs. Of all the trim levels in the Charger family, the SRT8 holds the highest five-year resale value, on par with more expensive V8-performance sedans such as the BMW 550i and Audi A6 4.2.

Dodge Charger Overview and History

After a long pause, Dodge resurrected the Charger nameplate in 2005.
Dodge practically patented the muscle car. Little did they know they would become one of America's top Automobile manufacturers and that the Charger model, for example, particularly the 66-67 one, would trigger jaw dropping amazement at its sight. John Francis and Horace Elgin Dodge were making bikes in 1901 when they decided to move their company, the Dodge Brothers Bicycle & Machine Factory to Detroit, Michigan.

Before Cadillac would outrun Dodge in engine development years later, the Brothers were supplying car parts for many producers. Their early involvement in the process of making cars lead them to starting their own business, entering the queue for a large order of recognition and notoriety. Setting the Dodge Brothers Motor Vehicle Company in 1914 brought them a step closer to the counter.

The first Dodge automobiles shared some of Ford Model T's features but outran the latter in terms of ignition and other improvements meant to ease driving. One of the major advantages Dodge offered was a smooth, electrical start rather than the sluggishly classic crank start. Built for the middle class, the cars quickly became a commercial success, mainly due the clever blend of reliable ruggedness, engine improvements and style elements.

By 1917, Dodge had produced enough cars to start thinking expanding in other car-manufacturing areas. Trucks seemed like something they could successfully take on and the Dodge truck division came to being. Dodge trucks were used by the US army during the First World War after which they kept being used as commercial vehicles.

The Dodge brothers sold their business to Dillon, Read & company for the astoundingly large sum of  $ 146 million, said to be the largest amount in history to have been paid at the time. Dillon helmed Dodge management only for 3 years, passing the new acquisition to the Chrysler Corporation  on July 31, 1928.

Due to Chrysler's financial conquests over some European automotive groups, such as the British Rootes group and the French Simca, Dodge is introduced to Europe in the 60's. Lightweight commercial vehicles are sold here under a different badge. The Dodge 50 series is fairly well received in the UK, becoming a favorite for military and utility operations.

1977 brought forth the collapse of Chrysler's European subsidiary and its adjacent Dodge branch altogether. The Dodge factory as well as some rights to use the Dodge name were purchased by Renault who resumed the production of Dodge's commercial vehicles. However, Renault only made use of the Dodge name till the 80's when it gave up control over the name rights. Only the factory was kept.

Dodge is currently part of the DaimlerChrysler group and has been lately been know for its trucks rather than retro-future stylized muscle cars as it used to be know for during the 60's and 70's. Much like any other American car builder, Dodge garnered huge amounts of success at the time with the launch of the Charger and Coronet models, to name only a few.

As far as the company's current status is concerned, trucks make the most sales, representing 78% of the division's venue. Still undergoing intensive promotion in Europe, Dodge have sought to reach  the same type of customer it did back in the 70's by launching a series of  mean-looking, rowdy  road-tamers such as the Nitro and Caliber.

2009 Dodge Charger Consumer Reviews

Great in a Crash!
We rented this car but the next day we were in a head-on collision in rush-hour traffic on an expressway in Tulsa. (Not our fault -- a driver next to us lost control, spun out and got turned around to face us.) All of us in the Charger walked away with NO injuries. We all drive smallish imports; we're all giving those cars second thoughts now. I know this isn't the kind of review Edmunds likes, but I hope they do post it, as safety can be a major issue in an auto purchase.

MY SOUL MATE
I scoped this car out for months, read all the reviews, drove several models, but I'm absolutely thrilled over my "CHARGER". So far it has been everything I anticipated it to be and more. I'm not a drag racer and I know a little something about cars to go with the 3.5 V-6 HIGH-OUTPUT at least. All around the board this is the car for me. My kids will get this car and still be cool and safe. I was a little hesitant about the rear wheel thingy, but I found that if I just respect the vehicle, it will definitely return the favor. This is definitely my soul mate.

2 Words: Amazing Machine!
The car actually looks like a sports car and all that, but the fact i realized after purchasing this car was, this could be an everyday sedan as well as the car which gives you the grin after you race that kid in the honda or nissan or mustang! Its spacious, load stuff in, go on long trips, go off road (Desert), seriously lets see a mustang or camaro do this. 5.7l V8 is simply crazy and on the freeway the fuel consumption is nothing! You want that car which keeps your wife happy because you look like a family man or that car which will make you happy because it makes you wanna go dukes of hazard? Well buddy its the DODGE Charger R/T!

A True, Bonafide Charger!
This is IT, man! If you want a big, burly, unapologetic All-American car (yeah I know it was built in Canada, but still) that shoots a middle finger to any sort of political or social correctness, this is your car. With its lowered stance, wide tires, deep front air dam and raised rear spoiler, it has the looks that strike fear in small children - yet can still fit 4 adults comfortably (5 if you squeeze) with all their luggage and a soft enough ride for a nice long road trip. Try that in a Camaro or a Mustang - it ain't happenin'!

"My car has been good to me"
I bought this car new with about 12 miles on it. It has been very reliable, roomy, and has fit all my needs since April of 2008. The middle console material tore up about 4 years in (wasn't happy about that). The wiring running to the trunk is cheap and I've had to go in and reconnect wires 3 times and actually my LED brake light on the trunk isn't working so I probably need to go back in again lol. Aside from that, I've had routine maintenance - oil changes, 3 sets of tires, 3 batteries, 1 alternator, and a lot of fun with my charger. I was 23 at the time I bought it so base is all I could afford. I would buy one again, but with the Hemi. Great family sedan!!
