A spacious and practical compact sport-ute, the Saturn Vue has long been held back by its unimpressive fit and finish and sloppy steering. Recent improvements in those areas, along with the availability of a hybrid version, broaden its appeal considerably.

Upon its debut five years ago, the Saturn Vue attempted to separate itself from the compact SUV herd by way of unique powertrains and construction. In addition to a choice of four- and six-cylinder engines, Saturn's small ute also offered a choice of transmissions that included class-exclusive five-speed automatic and continuously variable transmission (CVT) units. Other distinctions included dent-resistant and rust-proof flexible body panels. A few years later, a Honda-sourced V6 boasting 250 hp became available, replacing Saturn's less potent and less refined 3.0-liter unit. Due to reliability concerns, the CVT was dropped, while complaints about an abundance of hard plastic in the cabin brought a refresh last year that included upgraded door trim and a redesigned center stack. Although build and materials quality still isn't a strong point for the Vue, the accommodations in newer models are much closer to what similarly priced SUVs offer. Thoughtful features like a low step-in height, pop-up grocery bag holder in the cargo area and a roomy backseat give the Vue an easy-to-like nature that buyers in this segment are apt to find comforting.

The big news for the 2007 Saturn Vue line is the debut of the new Green Line hybrid model. With fuel economy estimates of 27 mpg city and 32 mpg highway, it's not quite as frugal as its chief competition, Ford's Escape Hybrid, but the Saturn is more powerful (170 hp vs. 155) and about $ 3,000 less. On the other end of the spectrum is the Red Line, which is essentially a sport version of the Vue, complete with big alloy wheels, a lower body styling kit and a firmer, hunkered-down suspension.

For buyers shopping the mainstream compact SUV segment, the standard 2007 Saturn Vue has its merits, such as a gutsy V6, a roomy cabin, a generous standard features list and a body that resists dings and dents. Though it still lags behind class leaders such as the Toyota RAV4 and Honda CR-V in terms of overall refinement and driving dynamics, it's still worth checking out. Alternately, some shoppers might be drawn to the new Green Line. It's one of the cheapest new hybrid vehicles you can buy and it still has the usual small-SUV advantages. Just be aware that affordability comes at the expense of advanced technology. Because of its mild hybrid system, the Green Line's fuel economy is well off the mark set by better-known hybrids like the Toyota Prius and Civic Hybrid.

The 2007 Saturn Vue is a compact SUV that's available with a choice of three power plants: four-cylinder gasoline, four-cylinder gas-electric hybrid and V6 gas. The four-cylinder gas and hybrid versions are front-drive only, while the V6 can be had with either front- or all-wheel drive. Even base four-cylinder Vues are well-equipped with the following standard features: 16-inch wheels, air-conditioning, keyless entry, full power features, OnStar telematics, steering wheel audio controls, cruise control, tilt steering wheel, a height-adjustable driver seat and a CD stereo with an auxiliary jack. Moving up to the six-cylinder models adds alloy wheels (16-inch on FWD, 17-inch on AWD) and color-keyed door handles. Optional on the V6 models is the Red Line Performance Package that features a lowered, sport-tuned suspension, 18-inch wheels, ebony leather seats with suede inserts, unique instrumentation and ambient footwell lighting. Various other packages, such as the Comfort Package (includes power driver seat and heated front seats) and Leather Appointments Package (includes leather seating and steering wheel wrap) are available for other trim levels as well. The Vue can also be ordered with upgraded audio systems, satellite radio, a sunroof and a rear-seat DVD entertainment system.

The base Vue is powered by a 2.2-liter four-cylinder rated at 144 hp and 152 pound-feet of torque and mated to either a five-speed manual or a four-speed automatic transmission. The Vue Green Line hybrid has a 2.4-liter gas/electric hybrid four-cylinder (170 hp and 160 lb-ft) that runs through a four-speed automatic. The V6 versions feature a 3.5-liter V6 sourced from Honda that makes 248 hp and 242 lb-ft and comes matched to a five-speed automatic. All Vues are front-drive except for the V6 version, where one may choose either front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive. Fuel mileage for the potent V6 is above average, as it's rated at 20 mpg city, 28 mpg highway (FWD). The Green Line hybrid garners ratings of 27 city and 32 highway. A Red Line AWD we tested scampered from zero to 60 in 7.9 seconds, so we'd expect the front-drive V6 to be a tad quicker. The Green Line hybrid took 10.7 seconds to reach the same speed.

Antilock brakes are standard on the V6 models and optional on the others. Traction control is standard on the FWD V6 and Green Line versions and optional on the base four-cylinder. Stability control and front-seat side airbags are not available, though side curtain airbags are optional. In NHTSA frontal crash testing, the 2007 Saturn Vue earned a perfect five stars for driver protection and four stars for front-passenger protection. Side-impact tests resulted in a five-star rating across the board. During IIHS frontal-offset crash tests, the Vue earned a "Good" rating (the highest possible). In that agency's side-impact test, the Vue scored a "Poor" (the lowest possible), though the tested vehicle didn't have the optional side curtain airbags.

Engineered for a life on pavement, the Vue has a fully independent suspension that delivers a comfortable, forgiving ride. Handling is on the soft side, and the electric power steering system is somewhat vague. The four-cylinder gas and hybrid versions provide leisurely acceleration at best, the price paid for frugal fuel usage. The burly V6 offers a substantial power boost that makes the Vue very quick on its feet for a small SUV, though torque steer can be an issue during hard acceleration. The Red Line performance upgrades reduce body roll around corners, while eliminating most of the torque steer.

The five-passenger 2007 Saturn Vue boasts an attractive cabin with sound ergonomics. Last year's refresh brought improvements, such as soft-touch door trim and faux wood accents, but the quality of most of the plastic trim is still below average for this class. Larger adults will find the front seats a size smaller than competitors' seats, but rear-passenger room is excellent, and a low step-in height makes getting in and out easy. A foldable front-passenger seat allows the transport of extra-long cargo, while folding down the rear seats provides 63.4 cubic feet of cargo space.

With 248 horsepower and a firmer suspension, the VUE Red Line will be the favorite of those who want more performance and sharper handling. At the other end of the VUE performance spectrum, the four-cylinder engine will, obviously, have acceleration that's quite a bit more sedate but, in the exchange, will cost less to buy and deliver better fuel economy. The hybrid VUE Green Line will give the best fuel economy of the lot, with acceleration somewhere in the middle. As is typical of hybrids, Green Line owners can expect to see the best fuel economy advantages in stop-and-go driving, because the gasoline engine shuts off when the vehicle is stopped and deceleration utilizes regenerative braking to recharge the battery pack.

Cargo Cutouts for MilkThe convenient cargo area includes special cutouts to hold one-gallon milk jugs.Red Line OptionThe Red Line option adds a sporting flavor.

Inside are a host of clever compartments, including two bins in the rear cargo area that are each capable of holding a one-gallon milk jug firmly in place. There are also rear hooks for hanging shopping bags and a pull strap that makes it easier to close the rear hatch. Up front are two comfortable bucket seats divided by a wide center console with more storage areas and dual cup holders. Rear-seat passengers will also enjoy open and roomy space, highlighted by a reclining 70/30 split-bench seat. The front passenger seat folds completely flat so you can load long objects and close the rear hatch.

The clean lines of the VUE's exterior are plain and simple. Other than its new grille and headlight treatment and the sculpted side-sweep line, you'd never know this was a Saturn vehicle. On the flip side, this "blank-slate" look lends itself perfectly to aftermarket parts and accessories.

The VUE features a 2.2-liter engine, five-speed manual transmission, air conditioning, rear defroster, illuminated entry, cruise control, front and rear power outlets, AM/FM stereo, tilt steering wheel, full wheel covers, keyless entry, OnStar, power windows, power door locks, power mirrors and a rear wiper/washer. The VUE Green Line includes the same features but has a hybrid powertrain with a 2.4-liter engine and four-speed automatic transmission. The V6 model adds a 248-horsepower V6 with a five-speed automatic transmission, alloy wheels, traction control and anti-lock brakes (ABS).

Options include all-wheel drive (V6 only), heated front seats, a six-way power driver's seat, alloy wheels, power sunroof, leather seats, rear-seat DVD player, AM/FM stereo with CD and MP3 playback, a head-curtain airbag and the Red Line performance package available only with the V6.

Though not terribly potent, the VUE's four-cylinder engine is on par with those offered by Hyundai, Toyota and Jeep. Those seeking more power or the need for all-wheel drive will want the Honda-derived V6; it's worth every penny. A nice compromise that won't break the bank is the new 2.4-liter hybrid option. Rated at 170 horsepower, the hybrid employs a motor/generator that kicks in to assist with quick starts and high-speed passing maneuvers. The gasoline engine shuts off when at idle and is quickly started again once the accelerator is depressed. A battery pack located beneath the floor provides power to the motor/generator and is recharged by the same unit whenever the vehicle decelerates.2.2-liter in-line 4144 horsepower @ 5400 rpm152 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 23/29 (manual), 22/27 (automatic)2.4-liter in-line 4 with Hybrid Motor170 horsepower @ 6300 rpm160 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/323.5-liter V6248 horsepower @ 5800 rpm242 lb.-ft. of torque 4500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/28 (FWD), 19/25 (AWD)

The VUE has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 18,100, while the VUE Green Line is $ 23,495 and the V6 model is $ 22,375. The performance-oriented Red Line package can cost around $ 2,500, while all-wheel drive costs about $ 2,000. Before you set off to purchase your new VUE, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying. Also check the Incentives tab to see what deals may be out there. With the exception of the Green Line hybrid, which is expected to retain a high percentage of its value, the remaining VUE models retain only an average value in the first three years and then fall to less than average after that.

2007 Saturn Vue Previous Generations

2007 Saturn Vue Future Generations

Saturn Vue Overview and History

The second generation of Saturn Vue was unveiled in 2007 at the Greater Los Angeles Auto Show, being entirely based on a car concept presented the year before at the New York international Auto Show. First launched in 2002, Saturn Vue received a facelift in 2005 when multiple exterior and interior parts were upgraded.
During the 70s, GM, the quintessential American car brand, began having troubles with sales as the oil crisis gained in intensity. Their big gas-guzzling engines were no match for European and Asian imports and as a result the company's image suffered. To fight this, GM launched a new brand of cars, Saturn Motors, on January 7, 1985. The name was taken from the Saturn rocket, the one that carried the astronauts to the moon in the 60s.

An interesting fact is represented by the number who started out this company: 99 people from all backgrounds: design, production, marketing etc. known from that day on as “the 99”. OK, they started out as 100, but one of them dropped early on hence the 99.

Production of Saturn cars began in the early 90s and the purpose from the get-go was to emulate foreign marketing strategies such as the Japanese ones in order to put up a fight on the American market. Such strategies included better quality control which translated into better reliability of the finished product and more control for the workers in the plant.

Soon after the first cars hit the streets of America, favorable reviews start pouring in. Sales go well as Saturn cars start earning one award after another. In 1993, Saturn reported it's first profitable year and everything seemed to be going well for the small GM-owned brand. By 1995 they had made their first million cars. A unique feature on Saturn cars in the beginning were dent-proof body panels (Z-Body) but after 2000, they were slowly put out of production.

Also after 2000 GM starting taking a more active interest in Saturn as a company and interfered with its line-up and general policies. Today, most models in the Saturn line-up are copied after Opel cars, just like Vauxhalls are in the UK.

Starting with 2003, sales for Saturns began to dwindle which forced GM to retire several models like the L- series and the Ion. Latest reports say that GM is now looking to sell or even shut down Saturn in order to alleviate the financial pressure it's under at the moment.

4dr SUV (3.5L 6cyl 5A)
Still going strong
Bought the Vue at 3 years old with 19k miles on it. It replaced a 10-year-old 2000 SL2 that was passed on to my husband. Six years later, only preventative maintenance thus far. Getting ready for the timing belt/water pump and other 100k maintenance (a little early mileage-wise at 84k, but at 9 years of age, don't feel as though it's worth it to delay replacing this rubber component on an interference engine). Been reading a lot regarding subframe rust issues, and due to living in the "Salt Belt" I'm a little nervous about seeing it up on the lift. The Honda 3.5 L V6 is a nice engine (I keep it humming along with fully synthetic oil), and I'm hoping the transmission will fare well after changing the fluid (so far, so good).

Green Line 4dr SUV (2.4L 4cyl gas/electric hybrid 4A)
Saturn Vue Green Line - Reliable!
I bought my 2007 Saturn Vue Green Line new, right off the showroom floor & it's been an extremely reliable vehicle for me. I've got 158,000 miles on it & it still runs great. Had some repairs once it got over 100k miles (air conditioning fan housing & front wheel bearings, & at 150k miles the shocks/struts) but it's been mechanically sound & had no other issues. The exhaust system is original & in great condition. And I love the "no rust" plastic outside - still looks nice. If Saturn was still in business, I'd buy another one when this one quits on me!

Great automobile
Bought the car new in 07. Other than routine maintenance I have had almost no problems at 150,000 miles. Surprisingly fast for what it is. I average approximately 25mpg on the highway.

Love My VUE
I love my new VUE. I still can not believe how nice it drives, how great it looks, and how many features it has for the money we paid. I just don't think you can beat it. This is the first Saturn I have bought and it will not be the last.

2005 Saturn VUE
"My first car and my best car!!!"
I absolutely love my Vue. I see all these newer cars having so many issues and as mine is a 2005, I haven't had to replace anything major other than the A/C, tires and the battery. Very reliable, comfortable and overall a great car! Never gave me any issues other than my battery dying while out and about but that's a simple fix.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
