Combining the styling elements of a late '40s Chevy pickup, the attitude of a muscle car and the fun of a roadster, the SSR is an entertaining answer to a question nobody asked.

It's a roadster and a pickup truck all in one. Just like the PT Cruiser, the Chevy SSR (Super Sport Roadster) is going to define yet another class of vehicle all by itself. With a fully usable cargo bed and a retractable hardtop, there's never been anything quite like the SSR, and that's the way Chevrolet likes it. Built on a modified Trailblazer chassis, the SSR will feature many of the same drivetrain and suspension components as its sport ute cousin. Power will be sent to the rear wheels from an aluminum block 5.3-liter Vortec V8, while other enhancements such as thicker anti-roll bars, bigger brakes and retuned shocks will help the SSR live up to its sporty demeanor.

This will be a limited production vehicle, so if you think you might want to get your hands on one, call your local dealer ASAP, 'cause they won't last long.

Chevrolet SSR Overview and History

The name says it all.
Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

I remember it fondly.
I am not usually not sentimental when it comes to automobiles. I generally long for something every 6-30 months. And though I only owned it for a year I still smile whenever I see one...I was living in SoCal and only recall having the top up twice. I really loved that truck. It was a little short on legroom and was a little tight with the top up but it made up for it with a joyful temperament. It had a wonderful exhaust note and when the top was down it felt more like a wake boat than a truck. It was nimble and a blast to drive. The designers did a great job,it was seamless from inside to outside. You'd almost expect to find a repurposed Pontiac sun fire interior in it but no! Cont...

SSR is ultimate convertible
The SSR is the ultimate convertible due to the fact of the one button automatic convertible hard top, the very, very spacious trunk, and it is so comfortable when exiting the vehicle. Unlike, the other convertibles that you have to lift yourself out of the car, the SSR is high enough that you just turn and get out. The body such as the fenders are solid steel, not fiberglass. That gives me a sense of safety if a collision were to take place. So much to say about this car/truck I love it. It is a real head turner!

SSR Not for the shy person
This truck is by far way ahead of its time. Like the PT Cruiser by Chrysler it has a nostalgic look about it. Reminds me of what a concept vehicle of the 50's would look like. Only they would have never been able to dream up that convertable hard top that stacks up and lays neatly between the seat and the bed of the truck. Turns heads everywhere it goes. If your shy don't buy this truck as every time you stop people want to talk to you about it

"Disappointed"
My wife had to have this car when I inherited some money. From the beginning, I knew it was a bad decision. I was turned off by the style (or lack of), but thought I’d give it a chance with the hopes that if I wasn’t satisfied, it may grow into a collector’s car and I could recoup some money. Other than being brand new, I quickly learned that it was just another disposable Chevy razor. Now I know why it makes every “biggest car flop” list on the internet. Other than the fact that I’ve realized that it looks like a poorly designed VW pickup, it is horribly heavy and feels like it. I was excited about the 400hp engine, but once it’s in this two-and-a-half ton car, it fees more like 200. It’s not nimble, not fun to drive, and makes me self-conscious when I’m in it. It’s like advertising the fact that I made a bad decision. I haven’t sold it yet because I don’t want to realize my loss in value, but I’m done with upkeep and insurance costs. I’d love to scrap the car and put the engine in something worthy, but that doesn’t seem viable. So, I’m stuck paying for my mistake year after year. We recently dropped a grand trying to figure out why it’s been overheating. Turns out it was several things, including an undersized fan. I paid close to $ 50k. Trade in value is $ 18k. I’d like to tell Chevy to take it to China with them so I don’t have to store it anymore. Next time, I pick the car. This is not a guy’s car, and definitely not a car guy’s car. Chevy found that out after a few years. I should have seen it a few years earlier.

"If you want a sport truck this is it !!!."
I bought this truck used with 50,000 miles on it because of the reviews I had read on holding value and additional attributes. I must say that I near thought that a truck could be as fun to drive as this one is. It is a blast!!! Heads turn everywhere and everyone wants to know what it is etc, etc, gets folks talking thats for sure. Runs like a sports car and fast with the 400 engine. Everything is pretty easy to maintain with some parts rather expensive as would be expected. Like rear oversized tires. cockpit space in the drivers and passengers space with very little inteior room but a lot of trunk to compensate. Does make you fell like your young again. Fun not practical. .Read less

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
