Toyota Camry Overview and History

Member of the third generation of the vehicle, the 1991 Camry was initially available only on the Japanese market.
Toyota Jidosha Kabushiki-gaisha or Toyota for short is actually the largest car maker in the entire world, bigger than Ford, GM and anyone else. Their history, like many other car producers, starts with some other product, in this case automatic looms. At some point, in 1933, Kiichiro Toyoda, son to Toyota's founder, decided he wanted to build cars and so he took a trip to Europe to get an idea about gas-powered engines.
The government encouraged such a bold decision mostly because making their own cars would be cheaper and they also needed vehicles for the war with China. Just a year after its foundation in 1933, the Toyota Motor Company created its first engine, the Type A, placed in the Model A1 passenger car and the G1 truck.

During WWII, Toyota was committed to making trucks for the army and only the premature ending of the conflict saved the company's factories in Aichi from a scheduled Allied bomb raid. After the war, Toyota resumed car making but found more success in building trucks and buses than with cars. Still, it didn't give up on cars for good and in 1947 it came up with the Model SA, also known as the Toyopet, a name which later was applied to other models as well.

A little more successful was the Model SF which also had a taxi version but the same 27 horsepower engine as its predecessor. A more powerful model, the RH, which had 48 HP came out shortly after. Production went up rather fast and by 1955, Toyota was turning out 8400 cars a year. That year, Toyota diversified their production, adding the Jeep-like Land Cruiser and the luxury sedan, the Crown.

With numbers growing and with several models under their belt, Toyota now had its eyes set on the international market. The first dealership outside Japan was in America in 1957 an the first plant in Brazil in 1959. An interesting strategy from Toyota ensured that all models were somehow unique to the region where they were produced (they were adapted to the respective market).

The big break for Toyota on the American market came with the 70s when rising gas prices forced local producers to make smaller cars. These were thought of as entry-level and as a consequence lacked in quality of finishings. In contrast, Toyota already had several fuel-efficient models that were also of better quality. The Corolla is the best example in this sense, soon becoming America's favorite compact car.

But as far as the luxury market went, Toyota still had trouble with selling the Crown and the Cressida. At the dawn of the 80s, the entire luxury market in America was entering a downwards slope, with all the other manufacturers finding it difficult to keep up sales, and that's when Toyota came up with Lexus, a new company that would make luxury cars.

By the beginning of the 90s, Toyota vehicles became synonymous with reliability and low-cost maintenance which made them very popular all over the world. A bid for winning over the younger audience was made with the launch of models like the MR2 and the Celica.

Presently, Toyota is at the forefront of the environmental battle, with its successful hybrid model, the Toyota Prius and now announcing a plug-in electric car that will be called Toyota Plug-in HV, which will run on standard electricity powered by a lithium-ion battery pack.

Awesome. Even for a teenager!
I bought my 93 Camry as my first car at a 7eleven parking lot for 600$ even with 206k miles on it and some little minor things wrong with it but didn't bother me because i knew it would be worth the investment. These cars last forever and the V6 edition is very fast with a very nice pick up(it beat most of my friends brand new cars, including the 2009 Honda accord coupe) These cars in particular will last a while as long as you change the oil every 3,000 miles or so. Toyota will never be beat by any other car even by Honda. In my opinion Toyota should bring back the 92-94 camrys because it is the greatest car they ever built! My 93 Toyota Camry now has 216k miles and still runs almost perfect!

'93 Toyota Camry Auto 200k+ miles
This car was handed down to me through the family and now after 20+ years of ownership I am sad to see it go. No words can describe exactly how reliable this car is. It was also very comfortable, and this coming from a pretty heavy set guy. Overall it is a great great car to own even in this day and age, and I have no complaints about it what so ever.

A Darn Good Car
After owning several American-made cars, this was definitely the BEST all around car I've had. There have been issues over the years with the electrical and little things beginning to break off (broken door handle, etc), but I think this is attributable to its age. It still runs with the best of them, a nice smooth ride and solid construction. I am still driving it, current mileage 211K. If I'd have maintained it better (regular oil changes, tires, etc) like a good car owner, no telling how long this car may last.

"Best used vehicle ever"
This vehicle has been the most reliable car I've owned . Mine has the 2.2 L engine . It might not win any races but It's definitely not what I'd call slow . This car also rides great and the seats are very comfortable . The trunk is a good size . It will hold a push lawn mower . Some say the design of this car is a little boring but throw a set of custom rims on it and tint the windows and it really makes the car look nice. If you find one for sale and it looks like its been taken care of you should buy it on the spot .

Very reliable car. Has been properly maintained. Paint is very good except for the front bumper. Has been in some minor accidents over the years. Interior is in excellent shape. Normal water on floor mats. Has after market stereo FM, CD player. Tires and breaks are very good.

"Best value for the money!"
I bought my Camry Wagon in the spring of 2018. I had previously had great luck with a Corolla of the same year but due to an increase in family size as well as other non performance related issues I had to get something larger. I bought the Camry Wagon fairly cheaply due to it needing rear brakes/rotors and calipers which I replaced relatively easily myself. It had been sitting for quite awhile by the time I bought it. However it started right up! Since it had been sitting for so long the engine oil was extremely dark and the transmission fluid was rather brown as well. I changed them both and the car has driven wonderfully ever since. The seating is extremely comfortable, almost like sitting in a recliner or on a big couch! It handles well and has decent acceleration, would be even better with the V-6 but hey it's darn good. Otherwise it's quite roomy and the added rear facing third row is great for a family like ours with three or more children. From sitting it did require me to additionally patch up the gas filler neck to avoid seeping at the bolt. Periodic cleaning of the throttle body helps with start up on a cold start. Otherwise it runs smoothly and quietly. The gas mileage is good compared to say a Dodge Caravan and when the third row seating is not in use the cargo space is great! Another added benefit is it's easy to work on due to ample room and the insurance is quite low. I plan on keeping mine for quite awhile so I've done the above preventative maintenance. However I definitely could have used it as a beater in the condition i bought it in!! I truly enjoy the wagon styling as well as its handling. The shape is unusual but many people comment on how they like the design. The interior is soft and comfortable without any holes or stains. The beige interior has held up great over time. The simplicity of this vehicle is it's greatest attribute. The only car that might be better is my best friends 1992 Corolla All-trac because of the four wheel drive element. Otherwise this is hands down a great car, even when it hasn't been treated as good as it should have and is almost 25 years old it cleans up great. That's why this era was one of Toyota's dominance. Great car for under $ 1000. Who could ask for anything more!!

My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
