The new 2017 Cadillac XT5 continues the brand's push to revamp its lineup. Like the new CT6 luxury sedan, the XT5 brings about a fresh design, lightweight construction, generous passenger space and an unfamiliar name. What does that name mean, anyway? Going forward, Cadillac will start calling its sedans "CT" (for Cadillac Touring) and its crossovers "XT" (for Crossover Touring). The number following relates to the vehicle's place in the hierarchy of the brand -- the higher the number, the more premium the vehicle is.

The new 2017 Cadillac XT5 boasts front-end styling that's similar to the brand's latest sedans.

Where does the XT5 fit? It replaces the SRX, which was Cadillac's best-selling model. And that popularity means the XT5 has its work cut out for it. Though roughly the same size as the outgoing SRX, the XT5's wheelbase stretches about 2 inches longer. This pushes the wheels farther against the front and rear bumpers, opening extra interior space in the process. Other interior improvements include a renewed focus on the quality of materials, including the availability of higher-end leathers in the top Platinum trim. This trim also delivers cool new tech features, like a rearview mirror that can display the view from a camera mounted on the liftgate.

In addition to the newfound interior space and features, the XT5 also benefits from significantly lighter construction than the SRX. This weight loss helps it ride better, consume less fuel and accelerate more quickly. The driving experience is further improved by enlarged and relocated sideview mirrors, which aid outward visibility. For now, Cadillac is sticking with a 3.6-liter V6 as the XT5's sole engine.

If you're shopping for one of these luxury crossover SUVs, the options may seem endless. Yet, the competition in the segment ensures each entrant is worth a look. The Lexus RX 350 has slightly less cargo capacity, but offers excellent fuel economy and an optional hybrid drivetrain. The Lincoln MKX trails the XT5 in fuel economy, but has more passenger and cargo volume. It's also available with a powerful turbocharged six-cylinder engine. The German offerings (Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes-Benz GLC-Class) are a bit smaller, but have better fuel economy and a broader selection of engines -- from gas and diesel four-cylinders to high-output six-cylinders, depending on model. Still, we're sure many will find the XT5 the most appealing due to its distinctive styling, interior space and pleasing driving traits.

Standard safety features include antilock disc brakes, traction and stability control, front airbags, curtain airbags, driver knee airbag and OnStar support, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance.

Most XT5s will be optioned with a Driver Awareness package that includes forward collision alert, a following distance indicator, lane departure warning and intervention, front pedestrian detection, forward collision mitigation and a seat that vibrates to alert its driver if it senses the vehicle drifting or nearing an obstacle when parking. An optional Driver Assist package (Premium Luxury and Platinum trims) bolsters these features with added collision mitigation functionality.

Putting a window where the sideview mirror used to sit on the XT5 helps improve forward visibility.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 has excellent forward visibility. The large sideview mirrors sit on the door versus ahead of the side windows, opening up the space in front of the driver. And though only available with the Platinum trim, a rear camera mirror looks to be a promising safety feature. Flipping a switch on the mirror activates a video feed from a camera mounted above the rear license plate. The wide-angle image shows a rear view unobstructed by rear headrests or roof pillars. We weren't able to test it extensively, but found it capable of solving rear visibility concerns at the cost of minor disorientation.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 is a five-passenger SUV available in four trim levels: XT5 (base), Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum.

The base XT5 comes standard with 18-inch wheels, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, LED daytime running lights, automatic headlights, a power rear liftgate with memory height, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, leatherette upholstery, an eight-way power driver seat, a six-way power passenger seat, a 40/20/40-split sliding and reclining second-row seat, dual-zone automatic climate control, keyless ignition and entry, and remote engine start. Technology features include an 8-inch central touchscreen with the CUE infotainment interface, voice commands, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration, OnStar (with a 4G LTE connection and WiFi hotspot capability), GM's wireless device charging and a Bose eight-speaker sound system with satellite radio, four USB ports and an auxiliary input jack.

Android Auto and Apple CarPlay come standard.

Upgrading to the Luxury trim gets you leather upholstery, an eight-way power front passenger seat, front seat power lumbar, heated front seats, driver memory settings, a heated steering wheel, interior accent lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a panoramic sunroof. Added safety features for the Luxury include front parking sensors, rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot monitoring. The cargo area receives a management system and a retractable shade.

Options for the XT5 Luxury include a towing package, ventilated front seats, heated outer rear seats, three-zone climate control and a navigation system that comes bundled with a 14-speaker Bose stereo. The upgraded stereo also allows one to opt for LED headlights with front park and cornering lamps. A Driver Awareness package adds forward collision alert and mitigation (with automatic braking and pedestrian detection), lane departure warning and intervention, and automatic high-beam headlights. The Advanced Security package includes an alarm that senses vehicle movement outside and in, a locking steering column, door lock and latch shields, and locking wheel lugs.

The Premium Luxury trim gets the Driver Awareness package and navigation standard. It also comes with 20-inch wheels, illuminated door handles, continually adjusting suspension dampers, interior accent lighting and ventilated front seats.

Buyers of the XT5 Premium Luxury trim can option three-zone automatic climate control. Also available is a Driver Assist package that includes adaptive cruise control, an enhanced collision mitigation system and an automatic parking system.

The all-wheel-drive-only Platinum trim is loaded with features, including trim-specific 20-inch wheels, upgraded leather upholstery, heated outer rear seats, three-zone climate control, an upgraded gauge cluster display, a hands-free power liftgate and premium floor mats. It comes with a variety of visual aids, including a rear camera mirror, a top-view camera system and a head-up display. While the Advanced Security package is standard, the Driver Assist package remains optional.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5 comes with a 3.6-liter V6 that produces 310 horsepower and 271 pound-feet of torque and is joined to an eight-speed automatic transmission. While front-wheel drive is standard, all-wheel drive is available on all trims except for the base and is capable of sending 100 percent of its power to either the front or rear wheels. Power can be further apportioned to individual wheels, depending on traction needs in rain, snow, ice or other surface conditions.

An automatic engine stop-start feature to help save fuel at stoplights is also standard. The EPA rates front-drive models at 22 mpg combined (19 city/27 highway), while the all-wheel-drive XT5 gets a rating of 21 mpg combined (18 city/26 highway).

When equipped with the optional Trailering package, the XT5 offers 3,500 pounds of towing capacity.

While 18-inch wheels are standard, many XT5 models come with 20-inch wheels that include an upgrade to continually adjusting shocks. Despite the size of the wheels, the ride remains compliant -- you don't feel bumps more than once. Around turns, the XT5 feels sharp and conveys a sense of poise.

The 2017 XT5 is quiet and comfortable on the highway.

The XT5 employs a few tricks to boost fuel economy: The engine turns off when you come to a stop and restarts when you're ready to move, and the V6 will occasionally run on four cylinders alone. You might notice the stop-start system at work, but the cylinder deactivation is near invisible. The biggest tell is a page in the digital gauge cluster that shows "V4" when the system is activated.

The 3.6-liter V6 easily motivates the XT5, and it does so with impressive quietness. You only hear the engine after standing on the gas pedal for extended periods, but even then it's still subdued. We're still curious to find how the engine deals with a full load of people and cargo. We're also curious to see if Cadillac will offer more engine choices, like most of the competition.

The 2017 Cadillac XT5's interior presents a renewed focus on design and quality of materials. While base models come with leatherette surfaces, most models will have a choice of four leather seating surfaces. The higher-end leather options in the Platinum trim look and feel special. Unfortunately, Cadillac continues to use piano-black trim around the infotainment displays, a choice that highlights fingerprints.

Thanks to real wood and stitched leather, the XT5's interior looks great.

Every XT5 comes with an infotainment system called Cadillac User Interface (CUE). Though we've voiced distaste for this system in previous Cadillacs, a quicker processor and small design tweaks reduce the headache. CUE now responds quickly to inputs, but the display can appear cluttered at times, especially when using the optional navigation. Fortunately, Android Auto and Apple CarPlay are standard across all models and provide a friendlier user experience.

Where previous Cadillacs used touch-sensitive panels to adjust things like climate settings, every switch in the XT5 is a physical button. We welcome this change, as the tactile sensations of real buttons take the needless guesswork out of setting the temperature or the level of desired seat heating. Unfortunately, there's still no volume dial. Instead you swipe your finger across a horizontal bar below the infotainment screen. As it doesn't have the accuracy or response of a dial, we were content using the physical steering wheel controls.

We do like the XT5's spacious interior. The second row will feel roomy to normal-sized adults, with plenty of knee- and legroom -- enough to cross your legs. Even though the size of the XT5 is roughly the same as the SRX it replaces, Cadillac added 3.2 inches of rear legroom by moving the front and rear wheels closer to the corners. Rear headroom is a little tight, but you can recline the rear seatbacks to give yourself some extra space. The second row also slides forward and back, either benefiting legroom or storage space. Backseat passengers will also appreciate the two USB ports for charging devices.

At 30 cubic feet behind the second row, cargo capacity compares favorably to the Audi Q5 and Lexus RX 350. The second row folds flat and extends storage space to 63 cubic feet. Elsewhere in storage, front passengers will find a clever pass-through cubby underneath the center console. It's sized to fit a handbag or purse.

Our time behind the wheel of the XT5 was split among jaunts on long, gently curving roads, time in city traffic and some stretches through twisty canyons. The combination of weight loss and increased rigidity made the XT5 more fun to drive, feeling confident and well-planted in twists and turns. The auto stop/start feature isn’t bad, but it would be nice to have the option to shut it off. The XT5's electric power steering provides decent feedback. The XT5 isn't a sports car, but you can certainly have fun in it. It's powered by a new 3.6-liter, 310-horsepower V6 with a very good 8-speed automatic transmission that felt as if it were programmed for fuel economy, not performance. It took hard throttle-mashing to get the transmission to downshift. The XT5 is by no means slow, and it certainly has ample power, but its off-the-line acceleration isn't quick.

REAR CAMERA MIRROR With the push of a button, the entire frame of the rearview mirror is filled with what's essentially a live broadcast of what is going on behind the XT5. This gives you a constant, high-resolution view of traffic without headrests or the roofline getting in the way. SPORT MODE For a combo that'll let you make the absolute most of your time driving a twisty road, put the XT5 in Sport mode. This delays transmission shifts, changes the steering effort, biases torque to the rear (in all-wheel-drive models) and modifies the suspension calibration.

The cabin of Cadillac's XT5 is noticeably quieter and more elegant than that of the SRX it replaces. The quality of the materials -- including carbon fiber, aluminum and real open-pore wood -- and the fit and finish are excellent. That, plus the roomy, sliding second row and tasteful color schemes ensure the interior holds its own against the competition. It's also wonderfully quiet inside. Setting it apart are the availability of Apple CarPlay, an improved version of Cue, a color head-up display and the terrific gotta-try-it-to-appreciate-it Rear Camera Mirror.

The XT5 reflects the ongoing evolution of Cadillac's Art and Science design philosophy. Despite a strong family resemblance to the SRX, the XT5 weighs nearly 300 pounds less, is on a new platform and is tighter, tauter and stronger. That tautness was a theme in the XT5's exterior design, where body lines are crisper and the nose uses a new jeweled headlight design. The XT5 has a 2-inch-longer wheelbase with short front and rear overhangs, giving it sportier proportions. The trim level that's visually set apart from the rest is the new top-of-the-line Platinum, with its unique exhaust, 20-inch wheels and grille.

All XT5s come with cruise control, electric parking brake, power front seats, remote-controlled power express up/down windows, 18-inch wheels and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Internet connectivity, 4G LTE with a built-in Wi-Fi hotspot, comes with the XT5, as do CUE connectivity, Apple CarPlay, 8-speaker Bose audio and a wireless smartphone charging pad. Also standard are a rear-view camera and dual front, front and rear head-curtain and driver’s-knee airbags. While a navigation system isn’t standard, one year of OnStar is, which can provide turn-by-turn directions. Also not standard: a limited-use spare tire.

In addition to the base XT5, trim levels for Cadillac's compact-luxury midsize crossover SUV include Luxury, Premium Luxury and Platinum. Driver-assist options include adaptive cruise control, automatic park assist, automatic front braking, forward-collision warning, lane-departure warning, lane-keep assist and a safety seat that lets the driver know when there is a potentially dangerous situation. Tri-zone climate control is available, as are an UltraView sunroof, ventilated seats, head-up display, hands-free power liftgate and DVD rear-seat entertainment.

Available in either front-wheel or all-wheel drive (FWD, AWD), Cadillac’s new XT5 boasts a 3.6-liter V6 like the SRX, but this engine is all-new, with features such as variable valve timing, Active Fuel Management cylinder deactivation, direct injection and auto stop/start technology. This V6 uses a new 8-speed electronically controlled automatic transmission. The XT5's new twin-clutch AWD system is optional.3.6-liter V6310 horsepower @ 6,700 rpm271 lb-ft of torque @ 5,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 19/27 mpg (FWD), 18/26 mpg (AWD)

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for the 2017 Cadillac XT5 starts at $ 39,990 with front drive. The top-line Platinum starts at about $ 63,000, and with a few option packages, climbs to above $ 70,000. That pricing falls in line with that of its competitors, but keep in mind that in many cases, those top-line models are diesels or hybrids, such as the Lexus RX 450h, options that aren't offered in the XT5. Cadillac XT5 Overview and History

The Cadillac XT5 is a mid-size luxury crossover that entered production in 2016, replacing the old SRX.
Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.

However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.

The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.

Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to  build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.

The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.

Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.

With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.

Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.

Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.

The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.

Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

2017 Cadillac XT5 Consumer Reviews

Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Thoughts from an SRX driver
I took my SRX in for warranty work and was given the XT5 AWD as a loaner for one day. Here is my thoughts based on the 55 miles I put on it. The XT5 is similar to my 4-month-old SRX in terms of pricing and trim level. However, the XT5 is very different in the following ways. Engine: newer engine with auto-start-stop function and a newer transmission. Secondly, I noticed right away that the led lights are standard and the headlights are not halogen like the similar trim SRX. The XT5 does have the auto start/stop where the engine could be automatically turned off at a red light (by the software). When you step on the gas pedal, the engines turns back on. The car, also, switches between V6 and V4 mode depending on the power needs, similar to Honda's VCM technology. The ride is quiet, smooth, and sure-footed. However, I did feel that the SRX's engine delivers quick power when demanded while the XT5's engine has to figure out how much power the driver needs before delivering it. So there is a brief lag time since the software has to decide between different modes (V6 vs V4) to deliver power. On the positive note, the XT5 is very fuel efficient compared to the SRX. The nagging windspeed noise originating from the panoramic roof on the SRX seems to have been resolved. The placement of several buttons on the SRX, such as parking brake or Onstar, have been moved around. So there will be a learning curve for the SRX drivers when they upgrade to the XT5. Most importantly, several "digital" buttons on the SRX's CUE (ex. such as heated seat button) have been replaced with actual buttons on the newer model. The CUE seems to be more responsive on this upgraded model but there is still a decent amount of time needed to learn it if you are not familiar with the system. The most important difference is the new, redesigned seats. They are more comfortable than the SRX's seats. My XT5 did come with collision warning, cross traffic alerts, and the seats do have a vibrate function to alert the driver of imminent dangers on the road. Finally, XT5 has a bigger interior and seems less heavy while driving when compared to the SRX. Overall, it is a decent improvement over the SRX. In other notes: if you have a larger family or require more space than the XT5 but cannot afford to break the bank trying to purchase an Escalade, my recommendation is to hold off till the XT7 comes out in 2018-19 timeframe.

4dr SUV (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
Best SUV that Cadillac has ever built!
Wow - what a ride - Love how incredibly quiet the interior is. Often I can't tell if the engine is running form inside the car based on hearing. Mind you I bought the base model and it's fully loaded. The Luxury has a sun roof and a lot of safety features but I felt the base model came with SO MUCH that it was perfect, and it is. Great fuel economy ( Don't love the stop feature when you are at a stoplight but it's becoming a lot more common, I get it) Living in Florida, A/C is important and this system delivers in spades. Love hat we can remotely start the car and cool it off first. Sound system is insane! Inclusion of apple car play is seemless. The interior is really plush and again for a base model- I'm so impressed. Update 2/20/18 over 10k miles on the SUV and still loving it!

Loaner car while 2015 Escalade in for service
Escalade in for minor overnight service, I was given a xt5 as a loaner. Not expecting any thing special I was very surprised with the vehicle. I don't drive a midsize SUV daily but found I enjoyed this experience. As a body shop owner I have the opportunity to drive most brands and found this to be one of the most engaging rides in its class. The BMW X3 , Audi and Lexus have there merits but for comfort and performance this caddy tops them all.

Luxury 4dr SUV AWD (3.6L 6cyl 8A)
After Much Research - Love my XT5
I was on the hunt for a crossover/SUV that could serve as my work commute car (about 15 miles) with some business meetings an hour or two away while also serving as a family vehicle for travel in New England (and therefore purchased the AWD model). I love that the vehicle is a V6 with "cylinder reduction"; only using all six when needed. The AWD feature is controlled by a button and can be engaged while driving -- therefore, I do not need to use it in dry/warm conditions. The interior is beyond gorgeous and comfortable. Handling is seamless and sporty. Love, love, the vehicle - so far, so good! The XT5 is made in Spring Hill, TN - another selling point for me as I was looking for an American car. Last, but certainly not least, the car takes "regular" grade gas. A huge selling point for me.

"One problem after another"
Thank God for warranty. Emissions problems. Screen goes out one trip - comes back on the next. Car wouldn’t go into reverse. Had to be towed from my garage. Entire dash started flashing and car wouldn’t go out of low gear. This happened three times - dealership couldn’t replicate. I got it on video. They kept it three weeks and had technical resource drive it and was finally able to replicate. Continual emission and engine lights come on and had to take it back. Got it in May 2016 when the 2017’s were released early. This was my second Caddy with issues. I got rid of it last month when the screen started acting up again and switched to Lexus. Hopefully it will be a better vehicle for me.

"Very good value"
Traded in my 2014 CTS for the XT5. So far I have had no problems. On our last trip I averaged 33 mpg (not bad for this size of vehicle). Ride is smooth and quiet. Really like the amount of rear storage. My only concern is the Cadillac CUE system sometimes does not want to recognize my wife's Apple i-phone so we can use Pandora or I heart radio (guess that we are not up in the electronic generation).
