The redesigned 2016 Nissan Maxima is worth a look if you're searching for a car that's more exciting and refined than a typical family sedan, but not so expensive as to be in true luxury-car territory. Read more to see what you might think of the new Maxima.

Notably, we picked the 2016 Nissan Maxima as one of ' Best Used Cars.

The Maxima has always been Nissan's luxury leader, but conservative styling and a too-similar résumé to Nissan's Altima have made it a tough sell for many consumers in recent years. That could change for 2016, as Nissan has redesigned the Maxima to help the car stand out more between mainstream family sedans and entry-level luxury cars.

Certainly, the 2016 Nissan Maxima is one of the more dramatic-looking sedans to come out this year. The new model is 2.2 inches longer and sits 1.3 inches lower than its predecessor, enabling sleeker styling and better aerodynamics. Overall curb weight is down slightly, while structural rigidity has increased, changes that Nissan says contribute to improved efficiency and handling. There are incremental gains under the hood, too, as Nissan has revised the Maxima's 3.5-liter V6 to produce 10 extra horsepower while using less fuel.

Lower and sleeker, the 2016 Nissan Maxima has been redesigned with a bolder look than before.

Changes can be found on the inside of the 2016 Maxima as well. The interior design looks more luxurious than before, and most materials are high quality. In particular, the upper trims' leather and simulated suede upholstery give the Maxima a premium and sporty feel. A new touchscreen technology interface with a separate rotary controller, allowing the driver to choose his or her favorite way to operate the system, is another welcome change this year.

Really, the 2016 Maxima exists in a curious no man's land among segments. It has a similar badge, and it's priced similar to full-size sedans like the Buick LaCrosse, Dodge Charger, Hyundai Azera (and its Kia Cadenza cousin) and Toyota Avalon, but has a much smaller backseat and trunk. At the same time, it has a much more luxurious cabin and better performance than well-equipped midsize sedans like the Honda Accord and Mazda 6, which are cheaper and actually also a bit more spacious as well. Finally, there are entry-level luxury sedans like the Acura TLX that share many of the Maxima's traits (not to mention the Audi A4s and BMW 3 Series of the world), but they obviously offer a luxury badge, unlike the Maxima.

As such, saying how the Maxima compares to others in its class is impossible; it really doesn't have a class. Instead, should you be interested in any of the above cars, the "B"-rated 2016 Nissan Maxima is certainly worth close consideration.

The 2016 Nissan Maxima is a five-passenger midsize sedan available in five trim levels: S, SV, SL, the sporty SR and the top-line Platinum.

Standard features of the base S model include 18-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, foglights, keyless ignition and entry, dual-zone automatic climate control, power front seats (eight-way driver and four-way passenger), a 60/40-split folding rear seat, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and a leather-wrapped steering wheel. Electronics features include a large gauge cluster display, an 8-inch touchscreen display, a navigation system, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio, two USB ports and an eight-speaker sound system with satellite radio, HD radio and a six-disc CD changer.

The SV model adds heated outside mirrors, front and rear parking sensors, leather upholstery, heated front seats and extendable thigh support and power lumbar for the driver seat.

The SL model gets a panoramic sunroof, a heated steering wheel, ambient interior lighting, active noise cancellation, active sound enhancement, a premium 11-speaker Bose audio system and adaptive cruise control. It also adds several safety features (see Safety section below).

With upscale materials and a standard 8-inch touchscreen, the 2016 Nissan Maxima is a step above more common family sedans.

The sporty SR adds 19-inch wheels (with available summer performance tires), a sport-tuned suspension, Active Ride Control (uses the brakes to quell body motions over bumps), Active Trace Control (uses targeted braking to keep the vehicle on its intended path) and active engine braking that helps slow the car when heading aggressively into corners or approaching a stop. The SR also has LED headlights, premium leather upholstery, simulated suede interior trim and heated and ventilated front seats. The SR lacks the panoramic sunroof, however.

The SR is available with the Midnight Edition appearance package, which includes a different wheel design and black trunk and under-body spoilers.

To the SL's equipment roster, the Platinum adds the LED headlights, a power-adjustable steering wheel, driver memory settings, premium leather upholstery, automatic wipers, a power rear sunshade, a 360-degree parking camera system (with a moving object detection system) and a driver attention alert system. The Platinum also features Nissan Connect.

Under the hood, the 2016 Nissan Maxima features a familiar 3.5-liter V6, but it is updated this year to produce 300 horsepower (up 10 from last year). Torque stays the same at 261 pound-feet. The lone transmission is a continuously variable transmission (CVT) that drives the front wheels.

In .com testing, a Maxima Platinum sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 6.1 seconds, which is average for a sedan in this segment with a V6.

EPA-estimated fuel economy ratings check in at 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway), which is a bit better than most of its rivals.

Standard safety features on the 2016 Nissan Maxima include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags, side curtain airbags and a rearview camera. Standard on the SL and above are a blind-spot monitoring system, rear cross-traffic alert and a forward collision warning and mitigation system with automatic braking. The Platinum model also adds a 360-degree parking camera system with a moving object detection system that sounds a beep and gives video alerts on the center screen when even small objects are moving anywhere around the vehicle. The Platinum also includes a driver drowsiness monitor and Nissan Connect, which includes automatic collision notification, remote starting, emergency calling and stolen vehicle locating.

In government crash tests, the 2016 Maxima earned an overall score of five stars (out of a possible five), with five stars for total front-impact safety and five stars for total side-impact safety. The Maxima also earned top scores from the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, receiving a "Good" rating in the moderate- and small-overlap frontal-offset impact tests as well as a "Good" rating in the side-impact, roof-strength and seat/head restraint tests. The IIHS also tested the Maxima's forward collision mitigation system and awarded it a score of "Superior."

In brake testing, a Maxima Platinum with all-season tires stopped from 60 mph in 122 feet, an adequate showing by class standards.

The 2016 Maxima isn't really the "four-door sports car" that its marketers would have you believe, although it does feel rather sporty until you start to explore its modest limits. The steering is precise, body motions are fairly disciplined when going through turns, and the car is generally fun to drive. Notably, the SR model has 19-inch wheels instead of 18s, plus a sport-tuned suspension. Those features slightly improve overall agility, but the ordinarily supple ride becomes firm -- perhaps too firm for some buyers. No matter which trim level you pick, the Maxima is quiet at highway speeds.

If you're looking for a sporty family sedan, the 2016 Nissan Maxima should be an excellent choice.

The 3.5-liter V6 provides ready and willing power across the rev range, and it works well with the CVT, although torque steer is noticeable during hard acceleration (The addition of all-wheel drive would correct this and improve traction to boot, but it's unavailable). As with other CVTs, the Maxima's transmission has no fixed gear ratios. However, Nissan has added seven simulated gear ratios that are used in certain instances to provide the feeling of a regular automatic transmission, minimizing the prolonged high-rpm droning that has given CVTs a bad reputation. We generally like the result, as the CVT does a pretty fair impression of a conventional automatic without giving up its edge in fuel economy.

The Maxima may not have the brand name of a luxury car, but it has the interior of one. Passengers are surrounded by quality materials, including soft-touch surfaces on most of the major touch points. Nissan's "Zero Gravity" seats are present as well. They're supportive, though we haven't found these to be as superbly comfortable as the ones in the Altima. One particularly thoughtful feature is the bin mounted forward of the shifter that contains two USB ports, space for the largest phones on the market and a slot to mount a phone vertically so you can see messages as they pop up.

The 2016 Maxima's intimate, well-trimmed interior is one of its strongest suits.

The Maxima's 8-inch touchscreen interface is paired with a redundant control dial (called "Display Commander") that's located on the center console, giving drivers multiple ways to control the various functions. When paired with a smartphone, the system can read incoming text messages aloud through the speakers and even conduct Google searches. A navigation system is also included. In general, the system is intuitive and responsive to inputs, but as of this writing, Nissan Connect's collection of apps for smartphone integration is quite limited.

Room front and rear is acceptable, but the Maxima can't match the rear seat space of similarly priced sedans like the Chevrolet Impala or Toyota Avalon. Similarly, the Maxima's 14.3-cubic-foot trunk capacity is smaller than those of midsize sedans, let alone full-size ones.

Even though Nissan bills the new Maxima as a "4-Door Sports Car," this is no budget-conscious BMW M3. Instead, it's a sporty entry-level luxury sedan, and a pretty good one at that. The 3.5-liter V6 engine puts all of its 300 horsepower to the front wheels through a continuously variable automatic transmission. While CVTs aren't everyone's cup of tea, Nissan does a great job due in no small part to its "D-Step" shift logic, which simulates gear changes. The sportiest Nissan Maxima SR takes it a step further, using paddle shifters on the steering wheel to select different fixed settings in the continuously variable automatic transmission, further simulating a more traditional automatic. The suspension felt comfortably firm, and combined with the accurate-but-numb steering, the Maxima was enjoyable in brisk driving around Nashville. On the highway, the smooth ride and quiet interior are pure luxury sedan.

PREDICTIVE FORWARD-COLLISION WARNINGForward-collision warning systems that alert drivers of stopped or slowed vehicles are becoming commonplace. The new Nissan Maxima sports sedan's new Predictive FCW monitors two cars ahead, instead of what's immediately in front of the Maxima. Nissan says this lets its PCFW react earlier to an emergency.NISSANCONNECTThe new Maxima Platinum model includes NissanConnect Services, Nissan's telematics services. Powered by SiriusXM, its wide range of functions includes automatic collision notification, remote starting via smartphone and a stolen-vehicle locator. Also included are "snooping" functions, such as curfew, "digital fence" and speed alerts for nervous parents.

Despite its flagship status, the new Nissan Maxima is actually a little smaller inside than the mainstream Nissan Altima sedan. However, the Altima can't compare to the new Maxima's luxury. The diamond-pattern theme on the accent trim extends to the seats and door panels on upper-level models. The stitched and soft-touch dash and doors impart a premium feel, as does the new infotainment system with its console-mounted multifunction knob. The driver and front passenger easily get comfortable thanks to power seats and tilt-telescope steering, but the rear seat's lack of head and legroom may leave tall passengers complaining.

Nissan has packed a lot of styling onto its new Maxima sedan. Nissan's new V-Motion grille treatment dominates the front end, and like it or not, you sure know what's coming your way. Similarly, there's a lot of styling on the sides. The roof, for example, appears to float over the rest of the body thanks to some clever paintwork. The sides are sculpted with intersecting character lines, and even the rear of the car, normally a weak point in styling, gets highlighted with sculpted taillights, twin chrome exhausts and a chrome lip over the license plate.

All new Maxima sedans are the same under the hood, sporting a 3.5-liter V6 engine with 300 horsepower and a CVT automatic transmission. Also standard are LED headlight and taillight accents. Even base-model Maxima S sedans come with NissanConnect, an 8-inch touch-screen navigation and infotainment system with voice command, Google search, Bluetooth and two USB ports. Also standard are an 8-way-power driver's seat, cruise control, push-button ignition and keyless entry, and a rearview camera. The color 7-inch information screen between the main gauges is also standard on all models. Standard safety equipment includes six airbags, plus stability and traction control.

Nissan adds features through trim levels instead of options packages. The step-up Maxima SV gets leather upholstery, an upgraded driver's seat, heated outside mirrors with LED turn signals, and front and rear parking sensors. Maxima SL and Platinum models get a dual-panel panoramic moonroof, upgraded audio systems, blind-spot warning with rear cross-traffic alert, adaptive cruise control, forward emergency braking, and the predictive forward-collision warning. The sporty SR loses the panoramic roof, but gains bigger wheels and tires and adds Alcantara to the seats and steering wheel. The luxed-out Platinum also gets moving-object detection, a driver-attention alert system and All Around View.

The only engine available for the new Nissan Maxima is a 300-horsepower, 3.5-liter V6 connected to a continuously variable automatic transmission (CVT). It manages decent fuel-economy numbers, all while delivering smooth and quiet power to the front wheels. CVTs have come a long way from the droning, weird-sounding days of yore, and Nissan's D-Step shift logic takes it a step further, mimicking the operation of a traditional automatic by letting the revs rise and fall when at full throttle. We were particularly impressed that the new Maxima doesn't suffer from torque steer, a peculiar side-to-side wiggle felt in the steering wheel that's common in powerful front-wheel-drive cars.3.5-liter V6300 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm261 lb-ft of torque @ 4,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/30 mpg

The nicely equipped 2016 Nissan Maxima S starts reasonably enough with a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of about $ 33,200, including the $ 825 destination fee. If you want the leather-upholstered SV you'll pay a bit more than $ 35,000. However, we suggest starting with the SL, thanks to its advanced safety technology and its still-reasonable $ 37,600 price tag. The sporty SR runs about $ 1,000 more, and the loaded Maxima Platinum will set you back about $ 40,500. Considering what you get for the money, including technology not available in some competitors, the Maxima shapes up to be a good value against cars like the Toyota Avalon, Chevrolet Impala and even the luxury-minded Acura TLX. To see what others in your area paid, take a look at 's Fair Purchase Price. It's too early to say how this new Maxima sedan will fare in resale, but previous Maximas have only been so-so at best.

2016 Nissan Maxima Previous Generations

2016 Nissan Maxima Future Generations

Nissan Maxima Overview and History

The eight generation Nissan Maxima got unveiled at the 2015 New York Auto Show, and it managed to surprise everyone with its abrupt design orientation. The 2009 Nissan Maxima, which makes its world debut at the 2008 New York International Auto Show, marks a return to the longtime Nissan flagship sedan's roots as a commanding 4-door sports car - a vehicle that is unique in both appearance and driving feel, with renewed relevance for today's active and ambitious sedan buyers.
Known by many names, this major Asian conglomerate has been making cars since 1914. Today, Nissan is the third largest automaker in Japan. The Nissan Motor Company took over the Datsun company in 1933 and in 1934 it would take on the name we all know today.

The first Datsun passenger car came off the assembly line in 1935 and pretty soon Nissan started exporting to Australia. In 1937 the Datsun Type 15 becomes the first mass-produced vehicle in Japan, which also comes in mini-pickup and delivery van form.

Ever expanding the production, Nissan decides to expand into the United States. This move from 1958 was made due to the American influence Nissan had thanks to its designer, William R. Gorham. The models exported to the US were 1200 Sedans with a 48 hp engine, a compact pickup with 37 hp which later became a top seller during the 50s.

By the time the 60s rolled in Nissan had already made a name for itself on both sides of the Pacific. Now, the company moves into another part of the market, starting to sell sport cars. At first, it would be the SPL 210, a narrow, high roadster had a folding soft top and a 48hp engine, soon upgraded to a 85hp version.

Catering for the American market, Nissan introduces the Bluebird, with synchronized 3-speed transmission in 1962. In the off-road sector, the Patrol is debuted, with a generous amount of horsepower, that was marketed as being able “to climb trees”. In 1967 the 2000 Roadster is let loose upon the unsuspecting public and onto the racing world which it takes by storm.

The sporty line is continued in the 70s with the “Z” line, one still continued today. The 1970 240Z becomes the best selling sports car in the world by offering quality and comfort at an affordable price. Sales in America start taking off until eventually, in 1975, Datsun becomes the number 1 importer in the States.

Nissan starts expanding during the 80s in order to keep up with demand and opens up new factories. And just when everyone thought that Nissan couldn't get any bigger, along comes a whole new brand of Nissan, one aimed at a more luxurious segment of the market, Infiniti. In 1989, as the Infiniti project getting off the ground, parent company Nissan was celebrating its millionth car built in the US.

As new plants get built throughout the 90s, new models are added to the line up to corner the market. The Altima sedan and the Sentra become front-runners as the best sold models in the Nissan line-up. Next, in 1999, it was time for the European market, Nissan signs an agreement with French manufacturer Renault to use each other's expertise and strengths.

In 2002, the Z concept is resurrected with the 350Z, a sporty car that quickly wins over car enthusiasts but specialists as well. The ewly-formed SUV market will also be represented in the Nissan line-up with the Murano. Now, the boys over at Nissan seem to have a real hard point to make as they've released the GTR, a super-sporty car, the crowning jewel of Nissan motoring and engineering.

2016 Nissan Maxima Consumer Reviews

Platinum 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl CVT)
Never Considered Nissan... Until Now
Week 2 of owning my 2016 Maxima Platinum and I'm very satisfied with my purchase. I'm 30 years old, no children, young(ish) professional with a long commute (30 miles one way). I originally started shopping the '16 Cadillac CTS, Jaguar XF, and Lincoln MKZ. I happened to see a Maxima on the road and it really stood out, so I read some online reviews and made my way to the dealership "just to look". Well, after driving the cars priced thousands more, I was seriously impressed with this car. I'll go through what's meaningful to me. Safety - what are grouped into "packages" on other vehicles with already high base prices are all standard on the Maxima Platinum and commuting in Chicago through dense traffic on busy expressways I find the extra set of watchful eyes on the road very reassuring. The blind spot monitor, front and rear sonar, forward emergency braking, smart cruise control, driver attention alert, around view monitor - these have all come in handy already in just these two short weeks and I'll probably not buy another car without this helpful tech. Interior - this is MILES beyond anything in the mainstream segment and rivals cars in classes above. The diamond quilted seats, hand stitched dashboard, diamond patterned wood trim, panoramic roof, heated and cooled seats, flat bottom sport steering wheel; all these features combine to make each driving experience feel special. The nav and infotainment system is awesome - the redundant controls with the i-drive like rotary wheel is convenient if you don't want to poke at a touchscreen and the navigation information can be swiped into the driver control cluster so you can keep your eyes on the road. Driving Experience - anyone who says CVT and sport sedan can't go together (and I was one of those individuals) haven't actually driven this car. The power is IMMEDIATE and instant on-demand. The system can keep the RPMs low in everyday driving to maximize fuel economy but push the sport mode button and things get moving fast. The ability of the CVT to give you that power instantaneously and then hold you in the power band is incredible and for merging onto highways at speed, it makes things a breeze. I never feel wanting for power even after driving the twin-turbo CTS which has 400+hp. Will this car cannibalize sales from the Infiniti Q50? Probably. Will it steal sales from cars in classes above? It just did for me. It's large and spacious, sporty without being pretentious and immature, elegantly appointed on the inside, and cheaper to insure. If you're looking for a full featured near-luxury (or luxury in my opinion) car with sporting aspirations that's not too fussy to be a good reliable daily driver, head down to your Nissan dealership. I drove one home that night and have been thrilled every time I drive it. Update 8/9: After owning this car for a little over 7 months my initial impressions have not changed. I currently have a little over 7K miles and there are some noteworthy things I'd like to add. After a month or so of driving, I noticed that when in sport mode, the acceleration DRAMATICALLY improved (not that I had any concerns about it to begin with). I did some research, and found that some auto manufacturers add software that puts limitations on the engine during the break-in period. Not sure if this is something that Nissan does, but the throttle responsiveness and power from the engine abruptly improved a noticeable amount. The only time I have noticed the CVT is when in Sport mode during spirited driving, the transmission holds the revs as if anticipating another heavy throttle input. This results in some minor droning from the transmission, however this is never observed in everyday driving in Normal mode. Still amazed by the ability of the CVT to give you instantaneous power; merging and passing is easy and never requires planning. The forward emergency braking can be somewhat overzealous - when a car is slowing down to make a turn ahead of you and you keep going at speed anticipating it moving out of your way, I've had the car brake itself somewhat abruptly several times. It certainly is better than having an accident, however it can be obtrusive. When you hear the warning beeps, a gentle braking motion can prevent this (which I should probably have been doing anyway). Minor note - not a big deal, but I found a way to turn off the honks and beeps the car emits when you lock and unlock it. Kind of a nice feature, especially getting home late in a suburban area and not wanting to annoy the neighbors. Overall structural rigidity is impressive - no squeaks or rattles, no issues with the pano roof that other reviewers have mentioned (which are all covered under warranty anyway). Some minor recalls have been addressed, but so far zero issues and still one of the best vehicles I have ever owned.

Platinum 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl CVT)
Great premium level sporty family sedan
If you're looking for a premium family sedan with cabin space that can fit 5 people comfortably, look elsewhere. If you're looking for a premium family sedan with performance, sporty feel, AND fits 4 people comfortably, this is THE CAR! Materials used and the technologies included with the Platinum trim in this car are top-notch with this price tag. When you sit inside the car, it really feels more like a sports car than a traditional sedan because of the interior design, this is probably why Nissan wants to label it as a 4DSC (4 doors sports car). Handling is great for a car that's between mid-full size. Acceleration is plenty with 300HP and 261lb-ft torque. Some people complain about the CVT installed in this car, however those are also enthusiasts who should be driving sticks instead of auto if they really want that "feel" of the engine. IMO, CVT in this car is not bad at all and I'd say 95% of the population won't even notice the difference if they weren't told about the CVT. With the CVT, my best fuel economy so far is 34mpg highway and averaging 24mpg in city. Safety features that come with this car and especially in Platinum trim are great to have. My car insurance went down 40% switching from a 2011 Camry to this car. Insurance agent told me that's probably because of the safety features and safety ratings from the new Maxima. If you're considering this car, I'd suggest watching some review and comparison videos on Youtube. Update*** After one year of ownership, I am still very impressed with this car. Remote start with heated seats and heated wheel during freezing winter has made my morning commute super warm and enjoyable. We also just had a baby and the rear cabin has plenty of space for a car seat, which was one of the reasons why I bought the car. Even today, I am still getting lots of compliments about the look of this car from random people in public parking lots. This has definitely been the best car purchase I've made so far.

Platinum 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl CVT)
Excellent value, comfort and acceleration.
2016 Maxima is my first Nissan purchase... I have driven GTR on the track multiple times and am always impressed. My Acura was out of commission due to the airbag recall and I was put into a Maxima S rental. Needless to say, I was so impressed, that I bought a platinum 2 weeks later. Being a 40 yr old Engineer, I am very particular and can say that Maxima provides the best 4 door performance and comfort for the money. Strong acceleration, quiet and soft ride, good fuel economy and excellent fit and finish. CVT is very smooth and provides nearly instant acceleration at any speed similar to driving an electric car. My favorite aspect of this car is the driver’s layout along with seating position and comfort. Nowadays most cars are moving toward touch screen everything… which can be a frustrating experience in real world driving and not very safe IMO. Maxima provides 4 ways to control the electronics… touch screen, buttons, steering wheel buttons and a rotating button by the gear shifter. Although it is not AWD, the FWD drive provides plenty of traction in everyday driving and almost no torque steer unless under hard acceleration. Other cars in its class lack the driver’s layout and comfort, are slower and more expensive. No worries here as Maxima will not disappoint. Don’t be over sold by brand names. Do your homework and you will find that Maxima is an excellent value.

3.5 S 4dr Sedan (3.5L 6cyl CVT)
The Did It Right
I have had the car for a month now. To sum into 2 categories: Simply Incredible: 1. The interior. Our other car is an Audi. This is just as nice, if not better. 2. Safety features. What can I say...WOW. They nailed this. The car has beeped at me 3 times now when the car in front of the car in front of me has hit their brakes hard. Once the car in front of me literally had to fully lock up to avoid an accident. Me? A little hard braking but no big deal...becuase the car warned me. They found that perfect sweet spot where the beeping is not annoying, but it always does it at just the right time. 3. Surround cameras...so easy to park! 4. The CVT. Just never think about it. I guess that means it is good! 5. Remote start. It was cold yesterday, finally. Remote started. When I got in the car I noticed it heated up the steering wheel for me, in addition to of course heating the cabin to the temp I left the car at. Really nice touch. 6. The headlights. Brightest and most precise I have ever seen in a car. Visibility is just great. Good but needs work 1. Nav and entertainment. Mostly nailed it. Little things I wish were better. You cannot see the song playing in the 7" screen for sat radio (does so with iPod and bluetooth)...takes a bit to find some things in the menu system. Blacks out options when driving for saftey which is fine but some I disagree shoudl be blacked out. Most useful 3d map I have seen in a car. Really Nissan, get with the program and allow Car Play and such...I do worry that this system will be "old" in 5 years, hope they have an ability and plan for software updates! The Nissan Apps are useless, but frankly I don't want Trip Advisor in my car. Would DIE to get a Spotify app though! 2. Intelligent cruise. Its pretty damn cool. I suppose I should not expect this to work like I assume a Tesla works! Only complain is when a car in front of me changes lanes it takes a while for the car the "let it go" and realize I have clear roads in front of me. Overall I love it though. 3. Zero G seats. OK it took a full 3 weeks to find an acceptable position (I am 6' 2" with a bad back). Agreed, the center console can annoy the knee, I have to really set the seat back a little more than I like to so it does not happen. I worry that in a few years there will be a noticable wear spot there. At least it has some padding. Otherwise seats are really the best I have ever had in a car...ventilation works great, leg support extender great for someone my size. And as other reviews have noted, why was Nissan unwilling to make the passenger seat 6 or 8 way? Short people complain that they are really low, and really tall people JUST have enough head space. What else can I say? I feel like I don't deserve this car, the interior is so damn nice! Drives with that perfect balance of a really stiff frame, but forgiving at the same time. Issues I have with this car are pretty trivial. Everyone who has been in it or driven it is jsut floored...especially people who own luxury brands!

Flagship Sedan? Hah!
Purchased my 2016 Maxima towards the end of 2015. Being a Nissan owner for years (Altima/Xterra) I never had any issues with the previous models. The 2016 model was the newly redesign of the Maxima line and once it arrived at my nearest dealership, I didn’t hesitate to embark on the experience of owning Nissan’s Flagship Sedan. This vehicle was garaged and driven modestly, I just marked six years of ownership and only 36,000 miles on the odometer. Decided to drive it to work and as I sat in traffic the vehicle jerked forward as I pressed the brake pedal, thinking that I was going to hit the car in front of me I ready myself to step on the emergency brake, just I was in motion to execute this action the car shut-off and smoke came from under the hood. I quickly turned into a side street open the hood but nothing seemed out of the ordinary. I immediately drove to my dealership, which ironically was only five miles away. The diagnosis was a damaged A/C compressor, which was quickly identified by the lack of cold air. The repair cost is a whopping $2500. My previous Altima went up to 120k miles and didn’t cough up an enormous bill for repair. Although the Maxima is a fun car to drive, the reliability leaves much to be desired despite the amount of care/maintenance given. Truly disappointed, then I may have expected too much from the “Flagship Sedan”.

My Nissan Maxima
This is my 2nd Nissan Maxima. I love it! It is a smooth and comfortable ride. The interior is well designed, and functional. The car looks classey, and striking while parked and driving down the road.. I wish Nissan would seperate the design of the Altima and Maxima, rather then making them as similar in body style. The car offers excellent acceleration, and precise handling. Being able to change the dash board design options are a nice touch. The Navigation and Bluetooth connection are on point. I would recommend Nissan Maxima. I would say the sticker price is high, but in comparison, every car is these days.
teddymetal,
Love this car
This car is the complete package. Extremely comfortable and really fast. The interior is just beautiful and everything is easy to use. I don’t think that there is anything that I didn’t like. I had a 2003 Nissan Maxima that my nephew now owns. The 2003 Nissan now has over 200,000 miles and has had no problems other then normal wear and tear items like brakes, shocks, etc. I bought this car because Nissan’s are extremely reliable and won’t leave you stranded on the side of the road. I have enjoyed every minute driving this car. I will be getting another Nissan when it’s time.

Best Sedan Ive Ever Owned!
This is by far the best 4 dr. sedan I have ever owned & I have owned over 15 in the last 25 years. The car rides so smoothly yet it has tremendous power and passing gear is amazing.

Best Car
Best car to keep. Up to date technology, comfort, power, easy handling, spacious, great looks, luxury.

Sharpest Maxima of 5 owned previously
Love the car except for the absolutely ridiculous positioning and lack of adjustments for the front passenger seat. The seat is so low to make for truly difficult exiting and entry of the vehicle. We are seriously considering trading this vehicle in for a vehicle whose manufacturer has given more thought to passenger comfort especially as customers age. We have already checked out 1 other manufacturers comparable vehicle and will be looking at another this weekend.

Amazing Car
Amazing Car, very smooth to drive, safe and stable

WOW, awesome car to own and drive, a true 4DSC!
I normally do not write reviews but I love this car so much I had to write a review. The car has smooth but aggressive styling, the Altima is similar in size but the Maxima has more street appeal. The power is fantastic, when you push the gas pedal the car really moves and if you want to save a little money it will get 33 miles per gallon at 70 mph on highway. Excellent interior, the seats are so comfortable and love the way the car wraps around the driver. My wife loves the growl the engine makes when you start the car and she tells me weekly how much she loves her Maxima. This is the best car I have every owned.
periodiccholly,
AWESOME!!!!
I traded my 2015 Camry SE in for the Maxima SV. I had a rental while my car was in for hail repair. It goes without saying I got hooked. For about the same gas mileage I gained about 140 horse power. I love this car!!! It truly is awesome. I am averaging around 27 mpg in mostly highway driving. It is very spirited and handles very good although I wish the body roll was a little more controlled. It works very well for what its intended purpose is and it absorbs road imperfections better than my Camry did. A lot of people told me not to buy it due to the CV transmission. Consumer reports rates it well in that area. So, I jumped in with both feet. I would encourage anyone in the market for a fun to drive, full size sedan with plenty of standard features to give the Maxima a hard look. I have never really loved a car, but if she was a girl, I'd marry her!

Trash Transmission
Only 5000 miles and the transmission has broken down. Car has been in for repair for 28 days due to replacement parts needed for the transmission which are on national backorder. Have no idea when parts will be available and when my car will be fixed. It appears Nissan still hasn't solved their unreliable CVT transmission problems even thou this vehicle has their newest generation CVT transmission.
raddedollhouse,
This car grows on you!
I have had my Maxima for about 8 months now and really look forward to driving it on the remote highways in my area ,love the ride and power, really like the leather interior ,have been averaging about 30 MPG.
cookeroxidize,
Love my Max!
This is my 7th Nissan, and second Maxima. Love the interior, the handling, and the acceleration on the highway. Interior is very comfortable, exterior is one of a kind. I get many compliments on the looks of the car. Only one minor fault and that would be the sun visors. They leave a lot of exposed areas on the windshield for the sun to get though. Other than that there is nothing else I could possibly find fault with. Good job Nissan!

So far I LOVE THIS CAR!!
Is like having three cars in one. Sedan, Luxury and Sport all combined.

Great Ride, Beautiful Car. Quality Not So Much
The car is powerful and comfortable. Love the ride. Found myself having problems with frozen locks related to poor design of the interior doors. It was fixed after six trips to the dealer. Frustrated at first buy. Wait and see on long term reliability. Little unsure about quality.

Great car
I drive this car everyday averaging over 100 miles, great fuel millage for a V6 that is fun to drive. Comfort and convenience combined with great looks.

Best Maxima ever
I have the platiumn version purchased in Sept. Car rides great , upper class interior new center stack is outstanding. I never want to stop driving. Plus safety features. Gas milage has been more then expected for a 300hp V6. Highway 31 to 33 around town 25mph.
nervousmute,
Looks Great - Feels Great
Pros - Great value. Amazing level of included features in the Platinum model. Integrated phone app is very useful. Technology is more than you can get in any other car. Cons - Center console is too wide at front-presses against knee. Rattle in the rear sunroof (common complaint). Rearview mirror doesn't dim bright lights enough. Steering is affected with acceleration. Overall - Fun to drive and looks great!
stressvanquish,
Definitely fun to own!
I bought this car when it first came out. I have been driving it everywhere and I love it! I bought the Platinum trim level and I do not regret it. I definitely use Nissan Connect Services a lot more than I probably should but it is useful now that winter is coming. Going into a nice and toasty car makes the commute to works definitely worth it. Even though the car has been out for 5 months, I am still turning heads in my area. My fuel economy is at 35.5 mpg and even though I do put in premium in my car, I feel as though I am spending less on this than I did on my previous vehicle. I tend to use sport mode often and it sure makes everything that much better. The BOSE audio system is amazing and all my friends want to fight over who will be playing music since it is nice and crisp. Very luxurious for the price and I recommend this car to everyone who has it as an option.
midnightweird,
Amazing car, so cushy
Used to have a 2003 Altima 3.5 loved it until it died last December. Waited, researched A LOT, test drove a few. Even tested an Infiniti Q50... The new Maxima is just barely under the Q50, if under at all. Chose the SL model and so much of the interior is similar. Drive train is different but I think it's better. Still would not complain if Nissan made a future rear wheel drive Maxima. In love with the dual-panel sun roof. Wife says it has too many buttons, I say it has the perfect layout and provisions; maybe better than the Q50. Less buttons and only one 7-inch LCD panel. Bottom line, it may be built on the same platform as the Altima but it takes things to a whole other level.
shriekpawing,
I definitely like this car a lot
Proud owner of a new 2016 Maxima. I really like this car its quiet, comfortable, faster and great on the roads. Purchased car end of last month got a SR model with standard navigation and ventilated seats and more. Maxima's CVT is powerful there are Normal and Sport modes usually driving on 2 lane highways keep in normal ranged but heading on the wide opened freeways push this car to the limit with Sport mode. Bose surround is the best stereo ever in this car performance is really out there driving the Maxima. My wife falls asleep faster in zero gravity seats love new technology it was bit expensive but car has all new bells and whistles in class. Got lots of compliments about new exterior styling but really love new interior design of the car. We are older people but this car makes us feel all younger again with its new 300-hp this car is a beast very powerful probably faster than a Acura we owned. Maxima has 7'' advance assist display and safety features include blind spot warning, rear traffic crossing alert and forward emergency braking is all the best. I love the icon with navigation as swipe to the assist info display without taking my eyes off road this car is the best ever. Goes over bumps and never suffer no rattles as can tell in most cars that has few flaws well not the Maxima there is nothing I disliked about this car its a great car. Too much technology for a car as this Nissan absolutely love every bit of my car Comfort and Convenience all the best electronics are superb fantastic in this vehicle. When driving Maxima the steering is lighter as car doesn't seem heavier driving though its larger on the outside its very impressive all inside with everything fully loaded.

Trading 2013 for a 2016
This is my wife's car I am a BMW person but this car puts me to shame after driving my wife new Maxima its no other words expressing. We had a '13 SV Premium great car no problems but after looking online at the new model my wife wanted to purchase another with more upgrades. The Maxima is very comfortable has all new bells and whistles in its class rides smooth. It does feel like a spacecraft behind the wheel of this thing we settled with a 3.5 Platinum its a classy car there are too buttons to press most what I love about this car is Drive Advanced Assist and center stacked center using navigation and other options as well. I believe this car is more worth $$$ buying it no sunroof package aren't available but on SL and Platinum models we like the panoramic sunroofs and cooled & heated seats. I like the memory driver seat include the power telescope steering wheel with lots of new things on Maxima. Overall the car is great looking seems much faster driving Maxima especially with normal & sport modes this car rides much faster even has a three hundred horsepower engine performance is amazing. Like the blind spot warning, rear traffic crossing and fast forward emergency braking as car can brake itself (NICE!!!!) believe this car much better than last generation acceleration is quicker even drive barefoot lot of times on long trips the car rides better anyways. Great sound system by BOSE with eleven speakers its too much but Nissan really made this car feel more of a upscale top of the line flagship sedan bought ours in Pearl White as last generation but has the charcoal leather interior and spoiler very nice car ever in its class. I drive my wife Maxima more than my BMW because this car feels more in class plus drive barefoot most times seems it goes faster with screeching tires and engine grinds in Sport mode just love this car even my wife loves it better than last model has come a very long way.
prudishlydrizzly,
Its a beast of a sports sedan
I purchased this car just a few weeks ago. Commute three times a week tell you one thing this car is a zippy. I've found that Maxima to be comfortable looks aggressive with styling. Got lots of things are plush all inside of this car. Love performance ride even with new 300hp its a joy driving n city driving and freeways as of now I am getting 33.4 mpg on my model. Very roomy sedan very quick lots of new bells and whistles believe might hold a good value than ever in its class. Interior is so quiet driving at 85/mph Sport mode and normal mode are best usually use my Sport mode with CVT as a lot of people are complaining but this car is fast driving in automatic feel. Like everything setup on this car easily keep my eyes on the road as can look at navigation, phone texts, audio and more on info display center. Its a cool sporty car its got cooled/heated seats very amazing ride the Maxima probably handles better than BMW paddle shifters are unique on SR version bought too much be listed at least its a less expensive car but absolutely a joy driving very more reliable vehicle to own love every bit of it. This car is a great luxury car drive to work as commuting everyday doing mornings its a beast on freeway while recently fill up last week but averaged fuel economy is 33.4 mpg getting on this vehicle its the best ever drove definitely more a sports sedan in its class so happy with my new Maxima/

2017 Nissan Maxima
"Beautiful and Reliable"
I fell in love with this car the first time I laid eyes on it. I really like the interior and exterior of the vehicle. It drives smooth especially on the highway and I get 31 + mpg and around 25 city which to me is pretty decent! If you are looking for a sporty good looking sedan this is the one to get.

2017 Nissan Maxima
"Good performer that’s fun and reliable"
My second Max after having a great experience with my first which never had an issue through 130,000 smooth riding miles. My 2017 Max is a faster more nimble feeling car but not harsh and incredibly comfortable seats. After 24000 miles no issues to report. Many road trips with gas mileage recorded over 30 mpg on long ones. Averaging 26mpg drops to 21 when having fun on the twisty roads.

2018 Nissan Maxima
"My favorite car I've ever owned"
I LOVE THIS CAR. I did quite a bit of research on the maxima before I got it. The biggest complaint by reviewers was the cvt transmission. However, if you're looking for the best of both worlds (comfort and sport) this is the car for you. I understand the cvt doesn't scream sports car, but it's very smooth. The car is also very quiet, but has a nice little growl under heavy acceleration. This car has 2 big downfalls. One is interior space. It's definetly smaller inside than it looks on the outside. Backseat room is lacking. The second is depreciation. This car loses its value quickly and by ALOT. However with suv's being all the rage these days, it's not surprising. That being said, I'll take this 300hp beast over a crossover suv 100 times out of 100 times. On top of the 300hp engine, gas mileage is great for that much power (thanks to the cvt). If you want something that's fun to drive, quiet, smooth and comfortable, check the maxima out. Just make sure your family/passengers check out the back seat first lol.
