It's a wallflower no more. If you're shopping for a midsize family sedan, the fully redesigned 2016 Chevrolet Malibu can be put on your test-drive list. It might not be as polished as some rivals, but you'll find it to be plenty practical and surprisingly fun to drive.

Though the previous-generation Chevrolet Malibu was a likable enough sedan, we found it came up short in a few key areas. For 2016, though, Chevy has gone back to the drawing board, and the result is one of the biggest generation-to-generation improvements in recent memory.

The first thing you'll notice about the 2016 Chevy Malibu is the striking exterior styling. To some eyes, it even evokes the Audi A7 with its sleek, faux-hatchback profile. In any case, it's safe to say this is the first Malibu since the early 1970s that won't look out of place in the tony California seaside town for which it's named, particularly in Limited trim with the 19-inch wheels.

A wallflower no more, the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu has become a striking car by family sedan standards.

Chevy tinkered under the hood as well. There's a newly standard turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine that replaces the previous non-turbo 2.5-liter base engine. It gives up 36 horsepower compared to the old 2.5, but its turbocharger supplies suitable low-rpm oomph plus improved fuel economy. The Malibu's engine upgrade, a smooth and strong turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder, remains optional. But it might be the new Malibu Hybrid that impresses the most. It produces excellent fuel economy and smooth, quiet and surprisingly rapid acceleration. The fact it otherwise drives like the other Malibus is icing on the cake.

Inside, the quality of the materials is unremarkable, but standard and optional equipment are competitive for the segment. The front seats offer plenty of adjustability, even for tall folks. And in back, the previous-generation Malibu's shortage of rear legroom has been corrected thanks to a wheelbase that's nearly 4 inches longer, finally putting the Malibu on par with its primary competitors.

So, is the Malibu the new family sedan favorite? We wouldn't go that far. The Honda Accord’s thorough refresh helps it maintain its status as a very compelling car, especially in its value-packed lower trim levels. The Hyundai Sonata is another excellent all-around choice for the money, while the Ford Fusion strikes emotional chords with its sharp styling and engaging driving dynamics. We also like to introduce shoppers to the underappreciated Mazda 6, which is a great choice for a car with a bit more style and athleticism. But if the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu ends up feeling right to you, you'll certainly be driving one of the finer sedans in this class.

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu midsize sedan is offered in four main trim levels: L, LS, LT and Premier. Note that the LT is technically divided into two sub-trims (1LT and 2LT), with the latter receiving the 2.0-liter engine, the eight-speed automatic transmission and a few other features noted below. The Hybrid is a stand-alone trim level.

The base L comes standard with 16-inch steel wheels, keyless entry and ignition, cruise control, air-conditioning, a tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, cloth upholstery, manual front-seat height adjusters, a 60/40-split folding rear seat, OnStar, Bluetooth phone connectivity and a six-speaker audio system.

The LS adds 16-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, 4G LTE connectivity with mobile Wi-Fi, a rearview camera, Bluetooth streaming audio, and the MyLink infotainment system with a 7-inch touchscreen that includes Android Auto and Apple CarPlay smartphone integration.

Although the base L trim isn't particularly well equipped, the higher trim levels raise their game with up-to-date features and even a two-tone color scheme.

The 1LT comes with 17-inch wheels, LED daytime running lights, heated mirrors, ambient interior lighting, an eight-way power driver seat (with power lumbar), rear climate vents and satellite radio.

The Hybrid is essentially equal to the 1LT, though it does come standard with dual-zone automatic climate control.

The 2LT is also generally comparable to the 1LT but adds a more powerful turbocharged engine, 18-inch wheels, dual exhaust tips and a larger fuel tank (15.8 gallons versus 13.0 for the 1.5T).

The Premier boasts 19-inch wheels, LED taillights, remote ignition, a color driver information system, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory settings, a six-way power passenger seat (with power lumbar), a heated steering wheel, dual-zone automatic climate control, wireless smartphone charging, a 120-volt power outlet, two additional USB charging ports, an upgraded 8-inch touchscreen, a navigation system and a nine-speaker Bose audio system.

Some of the Premier's higher-end standard features are available on lower trim levels as options. Other options, depending on trim, include a sunroof, 18-inch alloy wheels and a couple of advanced safety-related packages (see Safety section).

All 2016 Chevrolet Malibu models are front-wheel-drive. The L, LS and 1LT trim levels come standard with a six-speed automatic transmission and a turbocharged 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine rated at 160 hp and 184 pound-feet of torque. Fuel economy is EPA-rated at 31 mpg combined (27 city/37 highway), boosted slightly by a stop-start system that automatically turns off the engine when the car comes to a halt.

You can tell the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu Limited by its propeller-style 19-inch wheels. Also, the powerful 2.0-liter turbo engine comes standard.

Standard on the 2LT and Premier trims are an eight-speed automatic and a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder that cranks out 250 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That's less output than this engine made in the previous Malibu, but the new eight-speed transmission makes the most of it. In testing, it brought a Malibu Premier from zero to 60 mph in 6.4 seconds--which is about average for a midsize sedan engine upgrade.

EPA fuel economy estimates for the 2.0-liter are 26 mpg combined (22 city/33 highway). We averaged a very impressive 32.2 mpg on the 116-mile evaluation route.

The Hybrid, as the name suggests, includes a gasoline-electric system derived from the Chevrolet Volt. Most of the time, it sends its power through its 76-kW electric motor, which draws electricity from its battery pack and a 1.8-liter four-cylinder engine. Overall output is 182 hp and 277 lb-ft of torque. In testing, the Malibu Hybrid went from zero to 60 mph in 7.5 seconds, making it one of the quickest hybrid sedans we've tested to date.

EPA-estimated fuel economy is 46 combined (47 city/46 highway) for the Hybrid. In terms of actual fuel used, it is essentially equal to the Accord Hybrid and considerably better than the Camry Hybrid and Sonata Hybrid.

The 2016 Chevy Malibu comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front knee airbags, front side airbags, rear side airbags and side curtain airbags. Also standard is the OnStar telematics system, which includes automatic crash notification, on-demand roadside assistance, remote door unlocking and stolen vehicle assistance.

A rearview camera is standard from the LS trim on up, and there are two advanced safety packages. The Driver Confidence package adds automatic high-beam headlight control, front and rear parking sensors, a blind-spot monitor, rear cross-traffic alert, lane-departure warning and intervention, and a forward collision warning system with low-speed automatic braking. The Driver Confidence 2 package adds a self-parking system, an electronic parking brake, adaptive cruise control, and an upgraded collision mitigation system with automatic emergency braking.

In brake testing, a Malibu Premier came to a panic stop from 60 mph in 113 feet--a superior distance that one is one of the shortest we've recorded in this segment. The Malibu Hybrid stopped in a more typical distance of 123 feet.

The 1.5-liter turbo engine's 160 hp is about as meager as it gets in this segment, so don't expect a stirring experience when you mat the gas. On the other hand, the ample turbocharged torque hits early and often, so when you're climbing a hill or simply keeping up with traffic, this engine can feel virtually effortless. Overall, we'd say it's just fine for most purposes, but if you're underwhelmed on your test drive, be sure to check out the energetic 2.0-liter turbo, which makes the Malibu a much quicker car and also brings the more confident eight-speed transmission.

The powertrain to get, though, might very well be the hybrid. Its smooth, quiet and surprisingly quick acceleration is more akin to an electric vehicle than other hybrids such as the Toyota Camry, as it relies more on its electric motor than its gasoline engine. When the engine does come on, it's relatively unobtrusive unless you're flooring the gas or chugging up a steep grade. We also like that the Hybrid's brake pedal feels progressive and natural.

The 2016 Malibu's styling hints at a certain sportiness within, and sure enough, this model feels more athletic on the road than its stolid predecessor.

Whichever powertrain you select, the 2016 Malibu possesses a newfound nimbleness that makes it at least mildly entertaining to drive. Even the Hybrid is surprisingly light on its feet. Ride quality also remains a Malibu strength, with most bumps and ruts getting expertly filtered out before they reach the cabin. There might be a bit more interior noise than before, but this is still a fundamentally quiet car.

The changes inside the 2016 Chevrolet Malibu aren't as radical as those on the outside, but the new model is nevertheless improved. What jumps out about the new dashboard is its more modern, organic design that features sleeker gauges and climate controls that show a bit more flair. Another welcome touch is the way in which the optional MyLink touchscreen is integrated: It looks like an iPad slipped neatly into its own slot, bucking the trend these days of infotainment screens perched awkwardly atop the dash.

The 2016 Malibu's optional 8-inch MyLink touchscreen is user-friendly, and we like how it appears to slot into the dashboard like an accessory iPad.

Speaking of those touchscreens, the lower-end unit has a 7-inch diagonal with merely adequate graphics, while the available 8-inch screen (standard on Premier, optional on LT and Hybrid) offers tablet-like colors and clarity. We like the intuitive menu structure, quick response times and notable cool features such as mobile 4G Wi-Fi and full smartphone integration via Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It's unfortunate, however, that the screen can become unreadable due to reflections and fingerprints. Furthermore, the base L trim comes standard with neither of these infotainment systems.

Seat comfort is a strong point in the 2016 Malibu. The power driver seat (we haven't tested the manual version) slides back farther than the Accord's, making this Chevy a strong pick for tall shoppers, and all front-row riders will likely find support and cushioning to be satisfactory. In back, the new Malibu's elongated wheelbase opens up enough legroom to challenge rivals including the Ford Fusion, though in our experience, the Accord and Sonata offer even more. Still, the Malibu is now competitive in terms of backseat space, and that addresses a major complaint about the previous-generation car.

Cabin storage for small items is unremarkable for a midsize sedan, but the 15.8-cubic-foot trunk is large, if admittedly average for the segment. Getting the Hybrid reduces trunk capacity to 11.6 cubic feet since the battery pack eats up its lower rear portion (imagine a small stage in the back of the trunk). This is typical for a hybrid sedan, though the Hyundai Sonata Hybrid does buck the trend.

Our fully loaded 2016 Malibu Premier immediately impressed when pulling away from the first stoplight we encountered. With the 2.0-liter turbocharged engine, the Malibu pulled strongly, its new 8-speed automatic clicking off shifts with immediacy and precision, but without any harshness. You can manually select gears with a rocker switch on top of the gear selector; we'd prefer paddles on the steering wheel, but for the few times you're likely to manually shift it worked well enough. The suspension was also very nicely sorted. Despite the big 19-inch wheels on our test car, and the corresponding low-profile tires, the new Malibu rode smoothly over pretty much any surface we encountered. Additionally, it held its own in corners, although it's clear that Chevy has conceded the handling crown to the likes of the Mazda6 (along with everyone else).

APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTOWe've said it before, and we'll say it again: Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are our two new favorite things. After all, who wouldn't want the identical functionality of their smartphone reflected on their car's infotainment system?TEEN DRIVERFor nervous parents with first-time drivers, Teen Driver is about as close as you can get to keeping close track of your kids without an actual helicopter. It lets you monitor where the car has been, how fast it's been driven, and even mutes the audio unless everyone's strapped in.

Chevy strikes a winning balance of integrating controls into its touch-screen system without forcing users to be over-reliant on it. The fact that Chevy's MyLink uses big, bright icons that are easy to tap is part of the appeal, and we aren't just talking about CarPlay. Beyond functionality, the interior looks great. There are big clear gauges, a good-looking swoop and curve to the dash, and it's easy to see out, too. The front seats are comfortable and highly adjustable, and the rear seats finally have enough legroom to seat adults, although headroom is still a little tight.

The 2016 Malibu is clearly inspired by its big brother, the Chevy Impala. In fact, this is an even better interpretation of that design aesthetic, with lines that flow when it's needed, but tight when they should be. For example, the subtly sculpted coves in the front and rear doors look elegant, while the taillights tie it together, with LEDs in Premier models. LED daytime running lights augment the headlights in higher-end models as well, and super-bright HID headlights are also available. Wheel sizes range from 16 inches all the way up to the 19-inchers on our test car.

The base Malibu L model is a rental-fleet special that comes with only the basics: air conditioning, cruise control and an AM/FM radio. In reality, the 2016 Chevy Malibu lineup starts at the LS model, which includes Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with USB ports and Bluetooth with its 7-inch MyLink infotainment system. Also standard are a rearview camera and the 6-way-adjustable manual driver's seat. Also standard is the new 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with stop-start and hill-start assist. On the safety front, there are 10 total airbags, plus stability control and OnStar, which automatically dials for help in an accident.

Beyond choices such as the new Malibu Hybrid and 2LT and Premier and their bespoke drivetrains, the 2016 Malibu brings a lot of tech to the midsize-sedan party, including available adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, forward-collision alert and rear cross-traffic alert. A 4G LTE-powered Wi-Fi hotspot can help you find your dinner spot, the available on-board navigation system can help you get there, and the Automatic Parking Assist can even help you park when you arrive. And of course there are available leather upholstery and automatic climate control, although the latter only on Premier models.

The base engine for 2016 Malibu models from L through LT1 is the 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder and 6-speed automatic. It's a frugal choice, but its 160 horsepower shouldn't have any trouble moving the new Malibu, which is 300 pounds lighter than last year's model. LT2 and Premier models get the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which we know gets the new Malibu moving without hesitation. Thanks to the new 8-speed automatic transmission, it's still as fuel-efficient as its competitors' upgrade engines. Then there's the new hybrid, which uses a combination of a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder and two electric motors working in tandem for a combined 182 horsepower. All the engines run on regular gasoline; premium is recommended for the 2.0-liter but not required.1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4160 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm184 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000-4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/37 mpg 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4250 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,700 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/32 mpg 1.8-liter inline-4 122 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm129 lb-ft of torque @ 4,750rpmMotor A: 55 kWMotor B: 76 kW136 horsepower (electric motors combined)277 lb-ft of torque (electric motors combined)182 net horsepowerEPA city/highway fuel economy: 48/45 mpg

The 2016 Chevrolet Malibu L comes with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of an advertisement-friendly $ 22,500, squarely in the lower end of the midsize-sedan segment. However, the real-world base model is the 2016 Malibu LS, which starts just under $ 24,000. If you're looking for the 2.0-liter engine with its 8-speed transmission, you'll have to bring $ 29,500 for the LT, or about $ 31,795 for the Malibu Premier and all its extras. Malibu Hybrid prices aren't yet available, but expect them to be as competitive as the rest of the new Chevy Malibu lineup, which slots in slightly lower than similar midsize sedans like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price calculator to see what others in your area are paying. Unfortunately, while the new car looks great and offers a lot, historically resale value hasn't been one of the Malibu's strengths.

Chevrolet Malibu Overview and History

2015 marked the unveiling of the ninth generation Chevrolet Malibu at the New York Auto Show. The Chevrolet Malibu ECO got introduced at the 2011 New York Auto Show as part of the Earth Day celebrations. The all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu made its global debut in the US and China at the same time; two of the nearly 100 countries on six continents where got sold.
Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

2016 Chevrolet Malibu Consumer Reviews

LT w/1LT 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Great so far! (update....still great!)
We purchased the new 2016 Chevrolet Malibu LT-1 with the Convenience and Technology, Leather, and Driver Confidence packages in December of 2015. We have loved the car in the six months we have owned it. We have put nearly 6000 miles on the car (including a trip through the mountains of Colorado to the Grand Canyon) and have averaged nearly 33 mpg overall. We got 38 mpg on our 2500 mile round trip vacation. The ride is extremely quiet and comfortable. The seating is great (I am 6'5) in both the front and back. There is plenty of room in the trunk for our trips to our baseball tournaments. The exterior gets stares everywhere we go -- love the body style. The engine acceleration won't knock you back in your seat but it is fine for our driving habits. It also does very well in the snow and rain and gripping on the highway. The safety features are awesome! Lane assist, front, side, and rear warnings, blind side warning, etc. are definitely worth the upgrade. Our complaints are small but include a lack of storage for coins and sunglasses, a lack of dual climate controls, and no memory settings on the driver's seat. We are now at approximately 10,000 miles on our car (after 11 months) and we have averaged 32.5 mpg with a combination of city and highway driving. Our best was 41 mpg of straight highway driving. We still love the car with no new complaints. One of the best parts is that there are not very many '16 Malibus on the road even after a year on the market. My wife gets compliments on the car nearly every where she goes.

Has some good traits and some bad traits
I have a lease for a 2016 Chevy Malibu LT1. There are some nice things about the car that I like, but there are quite a few areas that need improvement. First the good points: 1) The style of the car is very sharp. 2) The 1.5 liter turbo engine is surprisingly pretty good on acceleration. 3) The interior looks like a high-end luxury car with a few exceptions (see bad points). Next, the bad points: 1) The 7" Infotainment system is severely limited in that it does not provide a hands-free voice command interface to my smartphone over bluetooth. Instead, you have to use the touch-screen to make phone calls or play music via bluetooth. 2) There are hardly any storage compartments for things like sunglasses, coins, etc. The only storage compartments are on the doors, in the armrest and in the glove box. I have driven other cars that have change-holders, sunglasses holders, and other various storage compartments that are more convenient than what the Malibu provides. 3) The AutoStop feature can be annoying at times. It shuts the engine off too quickly when easing to a stop, especially if you are using the brake to ease forward into a parking space or the garage.

LS Fleet 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Chevy should be ashamed
All the reviews were so positive on this car.....it has been nothing but a lemon since it left the lot. Constantly have the check engine light on for anything from emission sensor to transmission issues. Gas pedal shorted out going 55 mph. Needed pistons replaced at 61,000 (conveniently after the warranty ran out). Stabiltrack goes out but when you turn car off and restart it's fine. It's lost power and died on an interstate twice. Now it's in the shop with electrical issues. Won't stop overheating. Needs a new battery because something is draining it. Starter is fried. The last time I was able to drive it the message screen told me to roll my windows down! GM won't stand behind it....they tell me to talk to the dealer. Dealer says it's between GM and me. I will never own another GM product. Bought because I needed a reliable car with good MPG. It's spent most of the last year in the shop. So disappointed in Chevy and their dealerships.

LS 4dr Sedan (1.5L 4cyl Turbo 6A)
Leased a 2016 LS Malibu Silver Color
Its a giant car so if will probably meet your space needs. I think I got an amazing deal. I would have had to pay the same amount for a leasing a corolla but with a low residual. I think its too big for a single guy like me but I its way more comfy than the compact sedans I test drove. I liked the ride and apple carplay and guided rearview camera is cool. Keyless entry Yes Please. Push Start button. Apple car play is amazing. It comes with onstar so I can have wifi within car, locate my car from my phone and even lock it. If your car has remote start it will let you do it from your phone as well. I will not end up continuing onstar because I am usually driving it alone and my phone internet is enough. The nice thing is the tech stuff comes with all trims but since its LS the interior doesn't come bells and whistles but its better than the basic trim of most (non luxury) compact sedans. Edmunds is right about the screen getting stains. Acceleration is not mind blowing in the start but does get the job done. You are not going to win races but you are not going to feel that its underpowered either. Mileage is not phenomenal but its not a deal breaker either. I was nervous about the start and stop but it never bothered me at all. I am single and fresh out of grad school and got this as my first car. My only regret is that I shouldn't have gotten this nice of a car but I think price wise it made a lot of sense. Its quite and handles bumpy road well. I had no trouble in acceleration at high speeds. Me and my sister went on a long trip and loved it. I love the looks of ford fusion but not a fan of how they their price and interior that comes with base trims. My personal opinion is that the interior of Malibu is a lot better than fusion interior and I love the infotainment (Did I mention carplay). I got compliments for the exterior so yeah I would definitely recommend it. If you can afford I would definitely recommend do get safety features like blind spot because the pillars are kind of thick.
swooshjackberry,
Don’t like this car at all
Don’t like this car at all !! so upset I settled for this car because the steering has issues and replacing sensors is just stupid .

I See A lot of Repairs In Your Future
I purchased my 1.5L Chevy Malibu in July of 2016 with 54 miles on it. I absolutely love the look and feel of the car but unfortunately I haven’t been impressed. I’ve always taken care of the required maintenance on my vehicle and seemed to have issues. At 15k miles the rear suspension knuckle was causing a popping sound when accelerating after a stop that took multiple times in the shop for them to figure out. Some where between 15k and 52k miles I had the shift to park issue in which they had to replace the shifter/sensor. At 52k miles the transmission would slip upon accelerating. Took it into the dealership and they did a flush and reprogrammed the computer and it has been fine since. At 54k miles I was driving down the freeway and the car went into limp mode and threw a check engine light. Was able to get to work that day and planned to take it after but had a close call when it went into limp mode after accelerating from a stop sign nearly causing an accident. The dealership diagnosed this as a bad pedal position sensor and they had no idea when it would be in stock since it was after the strike. They refused to put me in a loaner vehicle although it was a safety issue. Called a dealership in a small town and they were able to order it and install it within 3 days. At 68k miles the headliner and trunk started leaking and had to take it to the dealership to get it repaired. Two weeks ago at 78k I noticed a small oil leak on my garage floor. Took it into the dealership to find that it is a bad head gasket and upper oil pan gasket. They wanted 3700$ for the repair. After talking to the CEM they were able to get it down to 1100$. It’s currently in the shop being repaired and then after that I’m selling it and getting something else. Haven’t been too impressed with GM and most likely won’t ever own one ever again. 2016 was the first year that GM’s power train warranty went from 100k to 60k miles so repairs such as this head gasket would’ve been covered.
snakejax,
Best vehicle to get
Great interior and exterior. Safety is A1. Could ask for a better car

Good-looking but unreliable, cheaply-made vehicle
I've had many compliments about the interior and overall look of this car, but ultimately there are just far too many issues for me to ever recommend this to anyone, period. I've had no less than 4 of the infamous "Reduced Engine Power" notifications that dangerously cut your speed back to 20-40 MPH, all because it turns out GM installed cheap, inherently defective accelerator sensors (trust me, I've been through THREE accelerator sensors) into this vehicle, and they'll keep failing because there's no mechanical connection between the engine and the accelerator, so it's a flawed system to begin with. Add to that a cracked piston (who even gets those ever, let alone at 50,000 miles?!) and countless niggly issues like brake lights going out prematurely, leaking in the trunk, etc.
begottrickle,
best economy class American on the market
I got this car used at a very good low price for 20,000 miles. I got it to get off a bad lease and I was set to replace it later on. 3 years later this car has just been amazing and very reliable. It's not a fully equipped luxury ride but it's got all I need. The engine performs great. I only had one mechanical issue but GM issued a recall service notice and refunded me dollar for dollar. I have put over 65k on it and I see no reason to replace it
crumpetenclose,
Electrical systems a joke
Sensors and other electrical components constantly needing to be replaced. Very costly. GM should have disappeared in 2009.
ouncesubpanel,
a very good and reliable car
Purchased this car recently for my 16 year old son to drive. very impressed with the gas mileage of about 40 mpg on these FL turnpikes. Plenty of power with the 4 cy turbo. It is a very comfortable car and easy to drive for a first time driver.
unsubtlerapadash,
GARBAGE! Avoid at all cost!
2016 new off the lot. Shifter cable failure before 20 thousand miles. Had to go back cause software issue also. Third brake light missing nuts from factory, leaked water into car and molded up trunk including staining headliner. Engine light came on at 60 thousand miles. Was told expensive fix because of where sensor was on motor. Shifter cable went out again at 70 thousand miles, second time. Also reduced power always popped up on readout. Do yourself a favor and please do not buy these garbage malibus or any chevy product. Just run to your nearest import car lot.
barbonboxy,
Don’t do it
50000 miles of pure garbage. Oil leak at 19000 miles, pedal sensor went at 30000 miles making car die on expressway, mass airflow sensor at 40000 miles, throttle body at 50000 miles. Transmission feels like it’s got 150000 miles on it. Panels not lined up right from factory so there’s a whistle sound when driving down the road. Bought this car new. Won’t buy another GM car. Dealers are useless and the warranty is a joke. Also the mpg is not nearly as good as they claim.
hangfly,
Great car, fun to drive, great mileage and power,
An outstanding car, i was drawn to it by its looks, and blown away by the value and performance.

Very cheaply made car
I have already had to replace the suspension, intercooler, along with many other failed parts. Many people have had engine failures with the 1.5L
pugsleyimprudent,
best car
one of the best cars I owned bought it new and only thing about getting use to is the keyless entry and starting wish the ls model had 18 inch wheels instead of 16 inch
hypocrisywrongful,
DON'T
Don't buy this vehicle. Bought new... Before 50k miles, engine had to be replaced bc the engine was burning oil. Fast forward 25k miles and I'm starting to have the same issues. Only difference is now I'm out of my original warranty and will soon need another 8k engine. Also, the backseat leaks on both sides when it rains. Yeh. It's pretty. But I'd rather have an 80s Astro van for all the trouble
yieldpseudo,
A headache
The car's auto stop feature is the most annoying part of this car. It makes sense at red lights I GUESS, but if you live in a city and do a lot of quick stops it's inconvenient. The car is also so low to the ground that it is almost impossible not to scrape when you go over a bump or drive over a dip, no matter how careful. I have also been to the dealership for engine problems around 4 times and it's been the same problem or at least very similar. One time, the car would not turn on at a red light and I had to wait five minutes before the engine came back on. Come on, Chevy. Another thing is the radio. The bluetooth doesn't work half the time and the font for the time and temperature are so incredibly small. Overall, would not buy again. I will take some responsibility for the scraping as sometimes I wouldn't be that careful but the engine problems are not acceptable for a car this new.

Great Car
I love this car. Its very comfortable. Theres plenty of room in the back seat. The turbo engine is a nice touch. The trunk is surprisingly big. Worth every penny.
rematchplug,
at least equal to the best car ever
I selected the car for the looks and the obvious value. It has not disappointed. It is stunning in appearance, handles and rides extremely well for a relatively small car. The workmanship/fit& finish is excellent -A source of pride as I drive and hear the compliments - did I mention gas mileage- super - thru all city driving - stays around 24/26 mpg and see 34-39 during HWY driving.
romenike,
SORRY M3 OWNERS BUT THIS CAN BEAT IT
DROVE THE MAZDA 3, CAMRY, FUSION AND SONATA. SONATA WAS THE CLOSEST IN VALUE SPACE AND FUNCTIONALITY, BUT SOMEHOW THIS MALIBU IS BY FAR THE MOST COMFORTABLE, QUIETEST, AND I WOULD SAY BEST GAS MILEAGE, BUT THIS I CANNOT CONFIRM. MY BEST IN TOWN MILEAGE IS 39.1. CURRENTLY AT 36.3 AND NEVER DROPS. ENGINE IS ADEQUATE BY NOT NOISY. LOVE THE TRANSMISSION. THE CAMRY FAILED MISERABLY IN THIS DEPT IN THE COMPARISON DRIVE TEST. BRAKES ARE EXCELLENT, HANDLING MUCH BETTER THAN EXPECTED AND THE DRIVING POSITION (IM 61) CANNOT BE BETTER. BOTH ARM RESTS FIT PERFECTLY AS IF THIS CAR WAS MADE FOR ME. EXTREMELY COMFORTABLE TO DRIVE. WISH I HAVE THE BLIND SIDE DETECTORS, BUT HAVE THE BIG SCREEN AND LEATHER PKG AND ALL FEATURES FOR THE MONEY PUT BMW 3 SERIES TO SHAME. OVERALL, SHOCKED THAT THIS GM CAR HAS SO MUCH SPACE, FRONT AND BACK, INCLUDING TRUNK AND COMBINED WITH THE GAS MILEAGE AND LIMITED ONSIDE NOISE THAT YOU CAN BUY A HIGH QUALITY CAR AT SUCH A LOW COST. DO THE COMPARISONS YOURSELF AND I FEEL YOU WILL AGREE. LONG TERM REALIABILITY, I DONT KNOW, BUT HAVE A 2014 CAMARO AND THE REALIABILITY IS EXCELLENT, SO EXPECT THE SAME FROM MALIBU. GO SHOCK YOURSELF AND SAVE SOME MONEY. THEY NEED A PEARL WHITE COLOR IN THE RANGE WHICH IS MY ONLY MISGIVING SO FAR.
uncheckedseasoned,
So So car.
Car has so many features that Ill never know how to use. Dealership should offer a class on how to use all of the features. The ride is very stiff. Almost like no suspension. Plenty of power with the 2.0 turbo. Recurrent problem with cooling the seats. Overall if I had it to do again I would buy a Toyota(my prior car).
underpassaffected,
No problems!
Very satisfied so far, average 34 mpg w/1.5 turbo.

If you are in it for the journey, not the best car
The model I own is the LT 1.5L Turbo, just from hearing that, I misled wasnt too excited. But after driving it for about 5k, it has grown on me. Being sort of a car guy, I find myself judging everything about it sometimes when Im just bored by the numb electronic steering, the sluggish engine, and the somewhat annoying safety features that work too well most of the time. And what I mean about that (The safety features that is) is the auto braking system is a lot of times, too sensitive. I was driving once where there was parked cars on my right and the car attempted several times to stop the entire vehicle when they were a couple good feet to my right. I became rather irritated because of how the people behind me were almost hitting me and confused of why i was brake checking. Most of these safety features can be either turned off or turned down enough if you completely think that you dont need them, or in my case, just flat out annoyed by them. Time to get into some good things about the car: The Brakes: If you like touchy brakes where the initial bite of them is good,ou will like these. Even if u dont, (like myself) youll come to really like them. The Infotainment: Everything from Apple Car Play to the in-car wifi is very well thought out. I still havent come up with a complaint with it. Ride Quality: Every time someone comes in my car for the first time, all I hear is how comfy it is and like the ride quality. Overall it is quite good, suspension is the main cause for that. Now lets get back to some negatives Steering: Its close to dead. Iif u are in it for more than point A to B, you wont really enjoy it. Visibility: The A- pilar is the main problem. There have been several occasions where I could not see pedestrians or even cars because I just cant see them. The overall meaning is that if you are a true car guy and you enjoy the journey, not the best car. In the other hand, if you are just buying this car for just strictly transportation, buy it. I would recommend the 2.0 liter engine with a 9-speed transmission.
condenseused,
Love the car so far
Great Car, great styling, used to buy only Fords but saw this car and decided I wanted to try it. My favorite feature is the Automatic dimming High beams, they work great in the rural are I live in. This car handles the snow and icy road well.

This Car Is Absolutely Amazing!
I own the 2016 Malibu LT with the Convenience and Technology Package and the car is absolutely amazing! First off, the exterior is gorgeous! It draws a lot of eyes and for good reason. The interior is extremely spacious and comfortable! The lumbar support is great and the room in both the front seats and back seats is amazing. I have had multiple adults in the back seats and they all comment about how much room they have. The technology within My Link is great and easy to use. My Link also enables Apple Car Play which is an amazing feature that just adds that much more usability to the entertainment system. On top of it all the 8" color display looks amazing! Performance itself is also very nice! You won't win any races but there is a little bit of get up and go in it. The start stop technology is also very seamless, as long as you don't try to hammer the gas the second the light turns you won't experience any problems with jerkiness some people talk about. To top it off I've consistently gotten better than the estimated gas mileage both in town and on the highway! Overall, Chevrolet really has out done itself with this car and it is one of the best if not the best in the class. I also test drove a Ford Fusion and Honda Accord before deciding on the Malibu.
tuxkent,
Best sedan for the price
I have the Hybrid. I have gotten 46 miles to the gal. Plenty of leg room, smooth ride. It corners on a dime. The only con I would have is the small gas tank and the trunk room is tight because of the second battery storage.
potsubway,
This is a great car
I like this Malibu a lot. The updated styling looks great and the ride is very comfortable. It has a lot of perks for the money. Lots of room front, back and trunk. I get 31-32 MPG. The only thing that I would change is the size of the fuel tank. It should have much more capacity for a car of this size. Even with the good mileage, fill ups are way too frequent. Overall, a great car and head and shoulders above the Chevy Cruze that I traded in.
synthesisgem,
Don't by if U have back issues and are tall.
Worst Front driver seat ever driven in!
crapulousmixture,
Exterior appearance is great. Very comfortable on
Looks great, drives great, great gas mileage. My link is great. Lots of bells and whistles. Big improvement over my 2010 LT.
colagyr,
I have owned this car for 6 months and love it!
I bought this after researching and looking at a number of competitors and lots of reviews. I drove this and the Honda Accord and the choice was clear between those two cars. The Malibu has been flawless on trips and my daily commute. I have the 1.5 turbo and it has plenty of power and no discernible turbo lag. I have averaged 35.2 mpg over the approx 7600 miles I have driven it. That is excellent for a car of this size. So far I consider this the best car I have ever owned.
hoodenfood,
Love my new car!
I just bought it the beginning of September. I drove it from my house in North Carolina to my Parents in Michigan and it was fantastic to drive. My partner loved driving it also. Didn't have to spend a lot on gas. The only downside that I have is that I do hear a slight rattle from the back when I go over heavy bumps. Over all I love it. My first brand new car.
fridaytribune,
It's not all bad, but It's not my favorite choice
We've got three Chevy Malibu cars; a 2005, 2011 and the 2016. Even though it has more bells-n-whistles, the 2016 is our least favorite. It drives as well as we'd expect, so there's no problems there; but it's just too crowded. The interior front tries so hard to make sure everything is at arms length that you can hardly steer the car without elbowing something. It also has awful leg room in the back. The 2016 has a blind spot that's almost 3 seconds long, and rear-view mirrors too small to be as useful as they should be. I've had MANY near misses because I have to look very hard and listen very carefully to know with certainty if someone is next to or behind me. We got a flat tire once and that's when we found out the car did not come with a spare tire, but instead came with a fix-a-flat kit. The Fix-a-flat didn't work at all, so we had to get the car towed. That's when we learned you have to especially request a split-bed tow truck due to the design of the car. We were stuck on the side of the highway from 2:30pm until almost 9pm. Three tow trucks later, and an extra $100 charge, we finally got home. I didn't like that at all. GM Roadside eventually reimbursed us for the $100 charge. To this day I'd rather drive my 2005.
mourneinvention,
Best value around, and looks great doing it
Our 2016 Malibu is equipped with the Premier package and for a total MSRP of under $32k, the feature list can't be beat. We shopped around and compared other brands, but once optioned to be similar to the Malibu Premier's features, we were north of $45k in every instance, and in many comparable models some Malibu features weren't even available. The heated/ventilated seats, heated steering wheel, navigation with real-time traffic, Apple Car Play, back-up camera, and forward parking sensors, are just a few of the features that we find extremely useful on a daily basis. The 2.0L Turbo has great power, and the 8-speed auto is slick, without abrupt shifts or hesitation, and it rarely seems to hunt for the right gear. The powertrain, while it doesn't sound as good as a V6 or V8, is excellent in every other respect. I would and do recommend this car to anyone in the market for a sedan in the $20-50k range. Cross shop this car with the Cadillac ATS, Accord, Camry, etc., and you'll appreciate that this car does everything very well.
irritatedefeat,
I LOVE MY CAR
I have owned my car for a little over a month. I had seem a few of them before I purchased it. I was driving a 2008 Hyundai. I wanted a long time to get a new car & from look alone I knew exactly what I wanted. I could not be happier with this car. I have the white LT model with a sunroof. I always see people looking at it. It is way better than expected.
cookeroxidize,
Very Satisfied
We have owned the car for about 60 Days. We have made several long distance trips with 4 adults. Everyone was happy and comfortable the entire trips. Car looks very nice on the outside. Inside is reasonably comfortable. We shopped for about 30 days and feel the value was good also. We purchased the LT model. Gas mileage is good. The auto stop and start is taking some getting used too. Also, wish the gas tank was a little bigger. A little difficult with seeing when backing up. Thank goodness for the camera. Car does not drive like a 4 cylinder. It has decent pickup when merging on the interstate. I do love the way it handles mostly. Especially country curved roads! Finally, we have gotten many compliments from total strangers when they see the car.
molecularvaseline,
Fun to drive. The 2.0L turbo moves this car quick.
I have the Premier model with the comfort and convenient packages 1 & 2. I got better than the EPA mileage traveling at 75mpg twice.(just (900 miles)I love all the technology. I use to drive a 2014 Buick LaCross. This car is much better, more driver leg room, better visibility, quicker steering, all at a lower price.
balearicventricle,
great car
I bought the '16 Malibu Premier in March of this year. The car rides great, and with the 2.0 liter, it gives sufficient power. At one point on a short highway trip, I got almost 40 MPH. The 8 speed transmission shifts flawlessly. I have yet to take it on a long trip, but I'm sure it will be very comfortable.
sputterequilibrium,
Ever so satisfied with this car
I purchased a 2016 camry and did I ever make a mistake.Being so dissatisfied I did the research I should have done from the start. My seach led me to the Malibu. What a difference. This is a car to love.the ride is better as are the cabin comforts, driving position, brakes, steering feel and the general feel of quality that are so missing in the Camry.
eraseavoid,
Fantastic Vehicle
I just purchased a new Chevy Malibu Premier with the 2.0T and i really couldnt be happier. This car is extremely quick, fast on the highway, and still great on gas. This is the First 4 cylinder i have had, been a v8 guy from the beginning and I'm very impressed. This car is Fast, not much turbo lag, and looks great. Not many cars on the road that have 250hp, 0-60 in 6.1 seconds, and get above the 33mpg highway rating, Chevy Outdid themselves this time.

2018 Chevrolet Malibu
"Auto start and 1.5 liter turbo = avoid this car"
The auto start and turbo on the car are very discomforting. I've had many problems with my 6 month old malibu having acceleration issues and the car jolts like the transmission might dump out of the car when the auto start feature goes in affect. This car is not safe in my opinion, and I'll be surprised if it makes it past 100k without any major issues. I would take my 2012 malibu back over this one

2018 Chevrolet Malibu
"Comes So Close"
After 4K miles and many more to come, my Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid provides a great driving experience. The 1.8L engine isn't going to win me any drag races, but it gets me up to highway speeds quick enough for me to merge. The regenerative braking is a great feature, with a visual representation of battery gain/loss on the tachometer and the displays. The hybrid engine is efficient as I've been getting great mileage, though the A/C can lower the overall mpg and the switch from electric to gas is more apparent than I'd like. Handling is decent, with the car having a bit more of a turning radius than I'd like. Safety features such as rear backup assist and blind spot monitoring help me daily during my commutes. Stylistically, this car looks mean and sleek, giving it a more luxurious look than its price tag suggests. The halogen headlamps are a disappointment, but a quick $ 70 self-install to LED significantly helped the look, paired with the always on curved LEDs. Trunk space is adequate, with the hybrid battery taking up a lot of room provided by folding down the seats. Inside, the leather interior is comfortable, even in the hot Phoenix sun. The exclusion of ventilated seating is unfortunate, but heated seats are nice (if I ever use them). There is plenty of room to sit in the front or back and my girlfriend loves the lumbar support, so much so she sometimes dozes off after setting it. The infotainment is alright, as the interface feels dated, but can quickly revert to Android Auto's more modern interface when plugging in the phone. The interface between my phone and car, when connected via Bluetooth, is instantaneous and seamless. Overall, the Malibu is not your dad's rental car. It finally feels like a vehicle you can own and be proud of. There are a few hindrances, such as the dated infotainment and limited cargo space, but as a hybrid car, this is on the most stylish and feature-packed hybrids on the road today.

Have 2000 s10 4wd 3 door stepside, bought for $ 1000, been driving for 4 years, engine still feels new, no issues with the transmission. Have traveled completely cross country in it. It never let me down. I keep easing along I can see it easily reaching 300,000. *****
