Our 2018 Chevrolet Malibu Premium came equipped with the 2.0-liter turbo paired to a 9-speed automatic transmission, and the combination worked quite well. The Malibu moves quickly off the line, aided by a gearshift selector-mounted rocker switch that allows for manual gearshifts. Although the setup works, we’d prefer a nice pair of steering-wheel paddle shifters. The Malibu’s steering is nicely weighted and direct, delivering good feedback. Our Malibu’s big 19-inch wheel/tire setup should have made for a jarring ride, but happily this was not the case. We credit the well-sorted suspension that absorbs bumps and road distortions as easily as it tackles tight corners and rapid lane changes. While the Malibu’s driving dynamics are not quite up to the standards set by the Mazda6, it certainly feels livelier than the Nissan Altima, Honda Accord or Hyundai Sonata.
APPLE CARPLAY AND ANDROID AUTO Complementing the marvelous MyLink touch-screen infotainment system in the 2018 Chevrolet Malibu is Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Both programs allow a mirror image of the user’s smartphone to be operated via the audio system, which makes life on the road infinitely more enjoyable. TEEN DRIVER Worried your kids will drive like you did when you first got your license? Fear not. The Malibu’s Teen Driver can help you keep tabs on them by monitoring their speed and where the car has traveled. You can even mute the audio until everyone onboard buckles up.
Even if you don't use CarPlay or Android Auto, you'll appreciate the Chevy MyLink infotainment system's combination of big icons and physical knobs and buttons. It's all part of an interior design that isn't just functional, but is among the best in class from a purely esthetic point, too. The gauges are big and clear, the dash curves and swoops attractively, and it's even easy to see out. The comfortable front seats adjust to virtually any body size, and the rear seats boast enough legroom to seat tall adults, although they might find headroom a little tight.
Chevrolet has managed a difficult task with its family of sedans, somehow imparting a family resemblance on the 2018 Malibu that's immediately shared with the larger Impala and smaller Cruze, but without making small, medium and large versions of the same car. There are subtly sculpted, elegant-looking coves in the front and rear doors, and at the rear the taillights -- LEDs in Premier models -- tie it all together. Higher-end models also get LED daytime running lights, and super-bright HID headlights are available. Wheel sizes range from 16 inches all the way up to the 19-inchers on our test car.
While the base Malibu L model offers the basics -- air conditioning, cruise control and an AM/FM radio -- it's a rental-fleet special you should skip. Instead, the 2018 Chevy Malibu lineup really starts at the LS model, which adds Apple CarPlay and Android Auto with USB ports and Bluetooth with its 7-inch MyLink infotainment system. There are also a standard rearview camera and a 6-way-adjustable manual driver's seat. The very good 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder includes stop/start and hill-start assist. On the safety front, there are 10 airbags, plus stability control and OnStar, which automatically dials for help in an accident.
There are powertrain choices in the form of the Malibu Hybrid and the 2.0-liter turbo in Premier models. Beyond that, the Malibu offers ever-increasing levels of technology, including available adaptive cruise control, blind-spot warning, forward-collision alert, and rear cross-traffic alert. There's a 4G LTE-powered Wi-Fi hotspot to help you find your dinner spot, the available on-board navigation system can help you get there, and the Automatic Parking Assist can even help you park when you arrive. And of course there's available leather upholstery, with Premier models offering automatic climate control.
Standard on 2018 Malibu models from L through LT1 is the 1.5-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder with 6-speed automatic. This frugal drivetrain has little problem moving the Malibu, and returns up to 36 mpg on the highway. Premier models get the 2.0-liter turbocharged 4-cylinder, which gets the new Malibu moving without hesitation. With the 9-speed automatic transmission, it gets 33 mpg on the highway, easily competitive for the segment. The hybrid combines two electric motors and a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder for a combined 182 horsepower and up to 49 mpg in the city. All the engines run on regular gasoline; premium is recommended for the 2.0-liter but not required. 1.5-liter turbocharged inline-4 160 horsepower @ 5,600 rpm 184 lb-ft of torque @ 2,000-4,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 27/36 mpg 2.0-liter turbocharged inline-4 250 horsepower @ 5,300 rpm 258 lb-ft of torque @ 1,700 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/33 mpg 1.8-liter inline-4 122 horsepower @ 5,000 rpm 129 lb-ft of torque @ 4,750 rpm Motor A: 55 kW Motor B: 76 kW 136 horsepower (electric motors combined) 277 lb-ft of torque (electric motors combined) 182 net horsepower EPA city/highway fuel economy: 49/43 mpg
Prices for the base-level 2018 Chevrolet Malibu L start with a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of about $ 22,500, which puts it in the lower end of the midsize-sedan segment. But since you'll probably skip that model, the real-world base model is the 2018 Malibu LS, starting at about $ 24,100. The Premier, with its 2.0-liter engine and 9-speed automatic, starts just below $ 32,000, while the Malibu Hybrid starts at about $ 28,750. Those prices are competitive with, and often slightly less than, comparably equipped midsize sedans like the Honda Accord and Toyota Camry. Before buying, be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price calculator to see what others in your area are paying. Unfortunately, while the new car looks great and offers a lot, historically resale value hasn't been one of the Malibu's strengths.
The new Malibu 2018 comes with changes to the front bumper that is bold and a lower front spoiler.
2015 marked the unveiling of the ninth generation Chevrolet Malibu at the New York Auto Show.
Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.
The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.
No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.
Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.
Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.
The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.
The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.
Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.
This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.
Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.
2018 Chevrolet Malibu Consumer Reviews
shrinksurgeon,
Nice sedan
It's a nice comfy 4dr sedan. Good trunk space and back seats. Easy for passengers and car seats. Nice display on the center of the dash for radio, rearview camera etc... It's decent on gas mileage. 29 mpg being the low and 44 mpg being the best. Based off driving in town and cross state.
molecularvaseline,
Great value
Very nice updated version of the Malibu and the only sedan chevy kept alive. For the value its worth every dollar.

Steering issues
When going on a straight road for long periods of time your steering sticks the loosens leaving you over correcting yourself
crispclad,
Im a truck guy, but this is one nice car!
Ive owned 2500HD Silverados for the last 20 years. This car gets all around gas mileage off 33mpg and is one comfy car to drive. Peppy 1.5 L turbo. Leg room in the back and a crazy large trunk. On an overall scale of 1-5 id give the 2018 Chevy Malibu a 4.8

2018 Malibu Hybrid
I purchased a new 2018 Malibu Hybrid in Cajan Tint Coat Red (extra $400). I've never had a mechanical problem with this car. MPG is great as long as you are not a lead foot. Has pretty much all the tech you need, with lots of charging ports, a standard plug, and I even get the unlimited 4G wifi hotspot so I connect my 2 cell phones, laptop, and tablet to my car when I'm working on the road. I wish they made air conditioned seats standard and had memory seats in the basic hybrid package. I'm just sad that GM discontinued the hybrid which I think is a big mistake as people like me really can't drive an electric vehicle as I could drain the battery in a day and don't have time to sit around and wait for a recharge.
rubbishlibrary,
Great value, exceptional MPG
I bought the vehicle new. Comfortable with plenty of leg room (I am 6'2"). Very efficeint. Typically 37-42 combined MPG if driven reasonably. Have actually gotten 44mi from a highway tank of gas. Great value and styling.
casuallythinning,
Few minor problems, but nothing serious.
I have a couple of complaints. 1st is the lower trim levels having cloth as replacement for materials on the dash and arm rests. It might have worked back in the 70s or not I don't really know. But all I know is that it shouldn't be on the dash and armrests. Secondly, the transmission, they had a good 8 and 9 spd transmissions. So why give the 1.5t the old 6 spd? Using either the 8 or 9 spd transmission, would not only benefit the performance aspect of the 1.5t. It would also benefit the economical spectrum as well.
As for the car itself it's been reliable, no engine problems, no repairs needed. It's done what it's supposed to do. Even with my heavy foot it's been nothing but reliable. Granted that hurts my city driving fuel economy. When driving on the hwy I've seen up to 47.2 mpg (computer) with the 1.5t. Actual mileage is 43.7 mpg. So yeah it's not as good as the computer but its certainly better than EPA.
scentedmoldwarp,
Get it if you want several problems
This car has several recalls starting with ecm failing to connect with the speed making it reduce while driving. Took it to the dealer many time just to be told that nothing is wrong. Then start button wouldn’t work from time to time showing check engine and service stabilitrack not letting me turn the car on and after 5-8 times of trying to turn the car on it would turn on but with reduced speed taking for ever to get to regular speed. To make things worse, the last thing this Car did was that while I was driving home from picking up my daughters from school the brakes got stuck all the way in and wouldn’t pop back out I called the dealership and they wanted me to take the car so they would check it but was to afraid to drive it 4 miles away to the dealer with no brakes so I called a few mechanics to see what was wrong and it came out that the vacuum pump was the issue. When the mechanic pulled the part out the vacuum pump was completely shattered from the connection to the engine I am very disappointed in this car at only two years old have so many issues. I got the car brand new on February 2018 and two years later it breaks down on me
prudishlydrizzly,
Garbage. Avoid this car and Chevy in general
Too many minor issues on this car from brake booster and steering issues to seat track and seat release replacement. Glad for warranty. Avoid this car at all cost. Quickly depreciates and you will spend more time in the dealer than on the road. Never buy!
crazeduncanny,
Constant issues
I've had this car for 8 months and have had several issues and recalls:
1. Week 2 of owning the car: Electrical "malfunction, check engine light came on: system needed a re-boot.
2. After 2 months: accelerator pedal sensor: Puts car in reduced power mode, dropping speeds to ~20MPH [even on the highway]. Finally received the recall notice.
3. After 6 months: Radio stopped working, touch screen, speakers, everything [even the blinker sound]. Not covered under warranty. $700.00 Fixed one month ago
4. After 7 months: New radio stopped working, seems to be the same issue. Probably not the radio.

Auto start and 1.5 liter turbo = avoid this car
The auto start and turbo on the car are very discomforting. I've had many problems with my 6 month old malibu having acceleration issues and the car jolts like the transmission might dump out of the car when the auto start feature goes in affect. This car is not safe in my opinion, and I'll be surprised if it makes it past 100k without any major issues. I would take my 2012 malibu back over this one

Comes So Close
After 4K miles and many more to come, my Chevrolet Malibu Hybrid provides a great driving experience. The 1.8L engine isn't going to win me any drag races, but it gets me up to highway speeds quick enough for me to merge. The regenerative braking is a great feature, with a visual representation of battery gain/loss on the tachometer and the displays. The hybrid engine is efficient as I've been getting great mileage, though the A/C can lower the overall mpg and the switch from electric to gas is more apparent than I'd like. Handling is decent, with the car having a bit more of a turning radius than I'd like. Safety features such as rear backup assist and blind spot monitoring help me daily during my commutes.
Stylistically, this car looks mean and sleek, giving it a more luxurious look than its price tag suggests. The halogen headlamps are a disappointment, but a quick $70 self-install to LED significantly helped the look, paired with the always on curved LEDs. Trunk space is adequate, with the hybrid battery taking up a lot of room provided by folding down the seats.
Inside, the leather interior is comfortable, even in the hot Phoenix sun. The exclusion of ventilated seating is unfortunate, but heated seats are nice (if I ever use them). There is plenty of room to sit in the front or back and my girlfriend loves the lumbar support, so much so she sometimes dozes off after setting it. The infotainment is alright, as the interface feels dated, but can quickly revert to Android Auto's more modern interface when plugging in the phone. The interface between my phone and car, when connected via Bluetooth, is instantaneous and seamless.
Overall, the Malibu is not your dad's rental car. It finally feels like a vehicle you can own and be proud of. There are a few hindrances, such as the dated infotainment and limited cargo space, but as a hybrid car, this is on the most stylish and feature-packed hybrids on the road today.
addiebecome,
Meets all expectations and more..
I only had this car for not even 2000 miles, and nothing has had a chance to fail, that's why I gave it 4 stars on reliability. The car is very comfortable, and gas mileage is as advertised - in the upper 40s. Unless I run heat or AC, then fuel economy suffers a lot, as it does on all hybrids. I love the large glass roof, it extends all the way to the rear seats. Make sure to close it if park in the sun. Overall, I would recommend this car, if you can get a good deal.
thankchase,
Happily Surpised
I had no plans of buying a Chevy, but I'm glad I did. I'm very surprised by the finish work and technology. Gas mileage is very close to what they estimate.
charityanchor,
love the car, my second one
my car is loud and rides like their is not a shock on it. I was wondering if the tires could be the cause or if the wheel had been changed. is their a way I can check on this
muscleacceptor,
