Though its versatility is somewhat compromised, the 2012 Lincoln MKT is a solid alternative to other luxury crossover SUVs.

Fifty years ago, the high style of Lincoln's long, low-slung land yachts inspired middle-class Americans to dreams of achievement. The brand was the epitome of automotive sophistication. A half-century later, after decades of management miscues, models like the 2012 Lincoln MKT luxury crossover carry the hopes of burnishing the brand's legacy for a new era and a new buyer.

Beneath the MKT's "distinctive" sheet metal -- more than a few people wouldn't use such a positive adjective -- are the body structure and running gear of the Ford Flex crossover. While badge engineering is one of the reasons why Lincoln is in such a depressed state to begin with, being based off the Flex isn't really a bad thing. Many positive attributes shine through, including a confident driving attitude, a refined ride, an available 355-horsepower twin-turbocharged V6 engine and cutting-edge technology. The cabin, meanwhile, has been enhanced with high-quality leather, a classy design and plenty of material to deaden the road's abrasive soundtrack.

The main problem with the MKT is that form trumps function, as its sloping roof line significantly chops headroom for third-row passengers, even though the Flex-based seating arrangement allows for plenty of legroom. Price might also be an issue, as the MKT often costs the same or even more than competing models. Even so, the MKT fares well as an alternative to the Acura MDX, Buick Enclave or Lexus RX 350. On the high end, the BMW X5 and Land Rover LR4 also compete. The MKT doesn't really raise the bar for the segment, but it is at least a step forward toward restoring the Lincoln brand to its former glory.

The 2012 Lincoln MKT is a crossover luxury SUV offered in two trim levels: MKT and MKT with EcoBoost.

Standard equipment includes 19-inch alloy wheels, automatic and adaptive xenon headlights, keyless ignition/entry, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and a power liftgate. Inside the cabin, you'll find leather upholstery, eight-way heated and ventilated power front seats (includes four-way power lumbar), heated second-row seats (outboard only), power-adjustable pedals, driver memory settings, a tilt-and-telescoping steering column, tri-zone automatic climate control, retractable second-row sunshades, a rear 110-volt power outlet and an 8-inch touchscreen that displays audio and climate controls. A 10-speaker audio system with a CD player, satellite radio and the Sync system that offers voice control for MP3 players and cell phones comprise the standard entertainment system.

The Elite package (EcoBoost only) adds a panoramic sunroof, a blind-spot warning system, power-folding third-row seats, a 14-speaker surround-sound audio system and a voice-operated navigation system with Sirius Travel Link. Other options include a dual-screen rear-entertainment system and sliding second-row captain's chairs that are heated and ventilated (and that also drop seating capacity from seven to six). The MKT EcoBoost can be further equipped with 20-inch wheels, adaptive cruise control, an automatic parallel-parking system and, when equipped with second-row rear captain's chairs, a console with refrigerator.

Standard MKT models get a 3.7-liter V6 making 268 hp and 267 pound-feet of torque, connected to a six-speed automatic transmission with a manual shift option using steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles. Estimated fuel economy is 17 mpg city/23 mpg highway and 19 mpg combined.

The MKT EcoBoost receives a more muscular twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 355 hp and 350 lb-ft. A six-speed automatic transmission and all-wheel-drive system are standard. Estimated EPA fuel economy is 16 mpg city/21 mpg highway and 18 mpg combined. In performance testing, the MKT EcoBoost accelerates from zero to 60 mph in 6.3 seconds, a swift result for this segment.

The 2012 Lincoln MKT comes standard with electronic stability control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags that cover all three rows.

The Collision Warning with Brake Support system comes as part of the optional adaptive cruise control. This system flashes a warning on the windshield when sensors detect slower-moving traffic ahead and then pre-charges the brake system to reduce braking distances for an ensuing panic stop. In a panic stop during testing, the MKT slowed from 60 to zero in an acceptable distance of 127 feet.

Other useful safety features include a rearview camera, a blind spot monitor and a Cross Traffic Alert system. Sync also offers emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment. Parents will also want to note the MyKey feature, which allows restrictions on vehicle speed and audio volume for teen drivers.

In crash testing by the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety, the MKT was awarded the highest possible score of "Good" in the frontal-offset, side and roof strength tests.

As large luxury people movers go, the 2012 Lincoln MKT is a pleasure to drive. Steering feels reasonably responsive whether assisted by hydraulic or electric power steering, the latter found on the EcoBoost model. The suspension delivers the refined ride quality expected of a luxury vehicle and very respectable handling, although the MKT's size and weight make it anything but sporting. The MKT EcoBoost V6 provides plenty of acceleration at virtually any speed, thanks in part to the six-speed automatic transmission's smooth shifts.

The MKT's interior is available in six- or seven-passenger configurations, and either way offers handsome styling and upscale materials including leather upholstery and genuine wood trim. The optional six-passenger configuration trades the 60/40-split second-row bench for a pair of sliding captain's chairs that increases legroom for third-row passengers. Add the second-row center console with refrigerator and headrest-mounted DVD screens and you're traveling in limo-class luxury.

The standard two-passenger third row is not nearly as enjoyable a place to be, because the headroom is compromised by the sloping roof line. Buyers looking for maximum seating capacity should check the Buick Enclave, which offers room for up to eight passengers, or even the Ford Flex, which has enough room for 6-footers. The MKT offers up 76 cubic feet of maximum cargo space, which is competitive, though below average for a large luxury crossover.

For such a large vehicle, the 2012 Lincoln MKT isn’t as unwieldy as you might think. This is most true when driving in a straight line, and especially when it’s equipped with the powerful EcoBoost V6 engine. That optional power plant gets this large crossover up to speed in a hurry, and the “Intelligent” all-wheel-drive system provides good grip on a variety of road surfaces. Befitting the MKT’s comfortable and quiet interior is an equally plush ride. The Lincoln’s 6-speed automatic transmission is another high point, seamlessly changing up and down through the gears and, via paddle shifters, allowing the driver to do the shifting when desired. Because of the MKT’s girth and poor rearward sightlines, we recommend the blind-spot-monitoring system.

ECOBOOST V6 ENGINEThe 2012 MKT’s upscale engine is the same one that powers the high-performance Ford Taurus SHO. With 365 horsepower, it makes the big Lincoln surprisingly quick.INNOVATIVE INTERIORThe 2012 MKT features an available refrigerator and third-row seats that can flip and face backward when the liftgate is up to create the ultimate setting for tailgating.

The 2012 Lincoln MKT’s interior is something beautiful to behold. Spacious, supple and versatile, it’s available in 6- or 7-passenger configurations. In the former arrangement, the second-row bench seat is replaced by two big, comfortable chairs with optional heating and cooling. The power-foldable third-row seat, meanwhile, offers nearly as much legroom as that of the back seat of a smaller sedan. Up front, drivers are treated to a high seating position. The touch-screen telematics system that acts as a command center for navigation, climate and audio functions is high-tech for sure, but can be challenging to learn and operate. A standard glass roof helps bring the outside in. With both the second- and third-row seats folded, the MKT boasts enormous cargo capacity.

Though the Lincoln shares its chassis with the Ford Flex, the 2012 MKT’s bulbous body couldn’t look more different than its boxy cousin. The MKT is also nearly half a foot longer than the Flex, which itself is not exactly lacking in terms of length. Up front is Lincoln’s split-wing grille, which appears menacing yet distinguished. Muscular bulges protrude from the sides along a high beltline and, in back, the big MKT finishes off with a full-width taillamp that includes the familiar Lincoln logo. For convenience, the MKT’s big liftgate includes power operation that opens or closes it at the touch of a button. The 2012 Lincoln MKT rolls on 19-inch wheels and tires in its front-drive iteration, while EcoBoost models ride on 20-inch wheels and tires as standard.

The 2012 Lincoln MKT comes well-equipped with features that can cost extra on other vehicles, including a power liftgate, rain-sensing wipers and tri-zone climate control. Standard equipment also includes perforated leather seating, 12-way power heated and cooled front seats, AM/FM/CD/Satellite audio system with 10 speakers, rear-view camera, 8-inch touch-screen display and power-adjustable pedals and steering wheel.

The 2012 Lincoln MKT can be upgraded with Active Park Assist, which helps with parallel parking, and a blind-spot-monitoring system. Other options include heated and cooled second-row seats, a THX II-certified Surround Sound audio system, voice-activated navigation, DVD headrest video system, Adaptive Cruise Control and second-row refrigerated console.

2012 Lincoln MKT models are available with two V6 engine options: A naturally-aspirated 3.7-liter V6 or a smaller but more powerful twin-turbocharged EcoBoost 3.5-liter V6. Both engines are mated to 6-speed automatic transmissions with manual-shift modes. The base version supplies ample power to move the big and heavy MKT, while the direct-injection EcoBoost engine provides enough gusto to hustle from zero to 60 mph in less than seven seconds. The base engine is now available only with front-wheel drive and the EcoBoost model comes exclusively with all-wheel-drive. Fuel economy for both versions has improved slightly from past models. Both engines can run on 87-octane gasoline, though 91 octane is recommended for the best performance with the twin-turbo EcoBoost model.3.7-liter V6303 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm278 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 17/24 mpg3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6365 horsepower @ 5,500 rpm350 lb.-ft. of torque @ 1,500-5,250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/22 mpg

The 2012 Lincoln MKT has a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) starting around $ 45,000. EcoBoost models with the more powerful engine and all-wheel drive start around $ 47,000, and a fully-loaded EcoBoost MKT can approach $ 60,000. The MKT’s starting price is higher than that of the Buick Enclave, Infiniti JX and Acura MDX, and lower than that of the BMW X5 and Audi Q7. Be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the 2012 Lincoln MKT. As for resale value, we expect the MKT to be comparable to the Buick Enclave and lower than the Acura MDX, Audi Q7 and BMW X5.

Lincoln MKT Overview and History

The 2009 Lincoln MKT concept was unveiled for the public at the 2008 Detroit Auto Show.
Lincoln sprung as an independent luxury-car producer in 1917. Founded by engineering whiz Henry M. Leland after his departure from Cadillac, which he had helped co-found, the company was named Lincoln as a reminder of the admiration Leland bore for the now defunct state-leader. In a macabre coincidence, president JFK was assassinated just like Abraham Lincoln was. At the time of  his death, JFK was being driven in a Lincoln Continental limousine.

However, before such drama occurred, Lincoln was a fairly small company that supplied Liberty aircraft engines for the Army during WWI. Having teamed up with son Wilfred, Leland converted his factory to manufacturing luxury automobiles right after the war. Despite Leland's skill and potential of his vehicles, the factory encountered several design-related obstacles and financial trouble that could not be overcome. Forced into bankruptcy, Leland sold his company to Ford in 1922 for $ 8 million.

Soon after the Ford takeover, Lincoln's first series of automobiles would enter mass production. Under Ford, Lincoln's styling problems were solved as were the financial issues  experimented before. Little changes or none were made to Leland's original engines. Coupled with production cost cuts, this would allow the company to toll out some 5,500 vehicles in December, 1922.

As of 1923, newer body styles appeared, many of them having been the result of partnerships with coachbuilders such as Fleetwood and Brunn. This lead to the appearance of  a diversified range of vehicles comprised of large sedans and limousines that could accommodate as many as 7 passengers. Despite the fairly big price tags these special coach-built vehicles came with, Lincoln sales did not plummet. They did just the contrary, registering a spectacular 45% increase over the previous years with 7,875 vehicles sold.

The 1924's brought forth the release of the famous Flyers that were extensively used by US Police Departments. The cars premiered some features that weren't introduced on private models until 2 years after. Two wheel disc breaks, weapon racks, armored windows and Police whistles were among the many 'accessories' Flyers came equipped with.

Probably the most famous car ever made by Lincoln sprouted in 1932  Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie's drawing board. The later release of the Zephyr in 1936 smashed open the gates for the release of the Continental. The latter was actually a modified 1938 Zephyr Coupe whom Gregorie had sectioned and added a vertical tire mount to. The car became so successful that it sold in over 5000 units until production halted in 1948.

However, the Continental would not go down for good. It was later resuscitated  through the Mark II model. By 1955, the Mark II could be purchased for a stunning $ 10,000, as much as a Rolls Royce cost those days.

Later designs, such as the Town Car and the bulky Navigator, aided Lincoln in becoming the best sold luxury car brand in the US by 1998. After a brief change of ownership between 1998 and 2002 when Lincoln belonged to the Premier Automotive Group, the company returned on Ford premises where it can still be found today.

Despite its tradition as a luxury car manufacturer and presidential limousine supplier, the company has experienced a severe setback in the last few years, having lost against Asian and European imports. This is mostly due to the lack of new models, issue that Ford hopes to solve by reinventing the brand. Lincoln's ascension is still unspooling through the release of models such the MKZ and MKX.

2012 Lincoln MKT Consumer Reviews

pros beat the cons
Needed seven passenger seating and did not want a minivan. Pros fast, handled better than a truck based SUVs that we test drove Q7,gx460, q56. J35 handled better but seemed underpowered. Good tradeoff between ride and handling. A little tin can feel but not nearly as tin sounding as the edge. Bad gas Mileage ECO boost in name only. Few mechanical issues with power seats. Third row head clearnce under 5 feet, leg room plenty. Good utility except for third row leg room.

MKT Sense - American Drive
I have no regrets with this vehicle for this is a Lincoln and which possesses the heritage of the brand, but creativity of the 21 Century thinking. I love the leather cabin and out of box styling, it like a plane flight on the ground. This MKT Lincoln has steering shifters with this semi-manual/full automatic feature, it's wonderful... when you need the burst of performance when passing in traffic. So far as it styling , The 1939's attributes are pure American, not Japanese or Chinese as many lost souls love to follow; MKT styling is attributed to pure USA motoring of 1930 's. Note the prominent split ventilating front grill design and wagon/caboose liftgate - pure American. Everywhere I go, work, church or play this crossover turns heads, the complement has not stop. I am LMC fan and my next vehicle will the SVC by Lincoln. I am supporter of the Ford Motor Company,I know this is a bad word among those that swear their life upon anything other than American cars, trucks or SUV's, but If you don't stand for American, you'll stand for anything.

Do not buy
I am very disappointed with this car. It is my fault I bought it however…. It is very uncomfortable on long trips as it is too narrow. The two zone comfort system is a fake; as there is only one fan. Thus the zone with the greatest different control’s the fan. The safety system is silly; it beeps and you get a message on the screen telling to look around. Plus it has lots of other poor design choices. When the wind blows it will whistle, also when someone pass you when the wind blowing it will whistle
