The 2016 Lincoln MKT is a solid option for consumers shopping for a six- or seven-passenger luxury crossover or wagon, but its unusual shape puts the squeeze on third-row passenger space.

There are plenty of options for families looking for a three-row luxury crossover SUV. Lincoln's offering is the 2016 MKT. It's essentially a range-topping variant of the Ford Flex, upon which it is based. Mainly, buying an MKT gets you unique bodywork and more standard features. Even the most basic MKT comes loaded with features like a panoramic glass roof, adaptive xenon headlights and front seats that are heated and ventilated. In addition to its long list of features, the MKT has high-quality cabin materials that include real wood accents and supple leather. It's also a very quiet cabin thanks to double-paned front windows and heavy insulation. Couple all that with a comfort-oriented suspension that does a good job of soaking up road irregularities and the MKT feels like a true luxury vehicle.

Even though the MKT provides a good value and a coddling ride for passengers, there are a few areas where it lags behind the competition. Third-row space is one such area, which is surprising given that the MKT is more than a foot longer than the Acura MDX. Due to the downward-sloping roof, headroom in the third row is tight, especially compared to the second row. The cargo area is also less useful, as the stylized hatch profile cuts back on your ability to haul bulky items, especially compared to the boxy Flex.

There are several players in the three-row luxury SUV class that are more versatile options. The 2016 Acura MDX leads the pack, with ample interior storage areas, extremely comfortable seats and a superb all-wheel-drive system. The Infiniti QX60 is another strong contender that offers a similar level of performance and features. For maximum interior space, the 2016 Buick Enclave is a better choice, while the new 2016 Volvo XC90 is a stunning three-row SUV that commands a slightly higher price. The MKT isn't our first pick here, but it might be worth considering if you want to drive something that doesn't look like every other SUV on the block.

The 2016 Lincoln MKT is a large luxury crossover/wagon with three rows of seating. It's offered in two trim levels: MKT and MKT with EcoBoost. Seven-passenger seating is standard, but optional second-row captain's chairs reduce capacity to six. Note that the base MKT is front-wheel drive only, while the MKT EcoBoost is all-wheel drive only.

Standard equipment on the base MKT includes 19-inch alloy wheels, adaptive xenon headlights, automatic high beams, foglights, automatic wipers, LED taillights, heated side mirrors with puddle lamps, a rear spoiler, keyless ignition and entry, remote engine start, a panoramic glass roof, rear parking sensors, a rearview camera and a power liftgate.

Inside you'll find ambient lighting, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, leather upholstery, 12-way power front seats (with power lumbar), heated and ventilated front seats, 60/40-split folding heated second-row seats (outboard only), 50/50-split folding third-row seats, power-adjustable pedals, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering column, steering-wheel-mounted shift paddles, driver memory settings, tri-zone automatic climate control, retractable manual second-row sunshades, a 110-volt power outlet and a cargo net.

Electronic features include the Sync 3 infotainment system, MyKey parental controls, an 8-inch touchscreen, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity and a 10-speaker sound system with a CD player, satellite radio, two USB ports and an auxiliary audio jack. The only option on the base MKT is a set of inflatable seatbelts (with integrated airbags) for the second-row seats.

The MKT EcoBoost model adds a more powerful turbocharged V6 engine, all-wheel drive and adaptive suspension dampers with three driver-selectable modes. From there, you can add the optional Elite package, which provides a power-folding/tumble feature for the third row of seats (including a tailgate seating feature), a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, a heated steering wheel, a navigation system with voice-control capability and a 14-speaker premium audio system with HD radio. The Elite package also incorporates a six-year subscription to Sirius/XM's traffic data and Travel Link services.

The optional Technology package (available only in combination with the Elite package) includes adaptive cruise control, a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking, a lane-departure warning/prevention system and an automatic parallel-parking assist system.

Stand-alone options for the EcoBoost model include 20-inch wheels, heated and ventilated sliding second-row captain's chairs (reducing capacity from seven to six passengers), a second-row refrigerator console (between the captain's chairs), a power panoramic glass roof, a rear DVD entertainment system (with dual 7-inch screens embedded in the back of the front headrests) and metallic interior trim.

The standard 2016 Lincoln MKT is powered by a 3.7-liter V6 engine that develops 303 horsepower and 278 pound-feet of torque. It drives the front wheels through a six-speed automatic transmission.

The MKT EcoBoost has a more powerful turbocharged 3.5-liter V6 making 365 hp and 350 lb-ft of torque. A six-speed automatic and all-wheel drive are standard. In instrumented testing, an MKT EcoBoost made the sprint from zero to 60 mph in a quick 6.2 seconds.

The 2016 Lincoln MKT comes standard with rear parking sensors, a rearview camera, stability and traction control, antilock disc brakes, front seat side-impact airbags and side curtain airbags covering all three rows. Parents will also appreciate the standard MyKey feature, which can be used to set vehicle speed and audio volume limits for teen drivers. Seatbelts with integrated airbags are available for the second-row seats for both MKT trim levels. Sync also offers emergency crash notification that automatically dials 911 in the event of an airbag deployment.

Safety features that are available only on the EcoBoost model include a blind spot monitoring system with rear cross-traffic alert, a lane departure warning system with intervention and a forward collision mitigation system with automatic braking.

In a simulated panic stop during testing, an all-wheel-drive MKT stopped from 60 mph in an acceptable distance of 122 feet.

Of the two available trim levels, the 2016 Lincoln MKT EcoBoost would be our choice, as its powerful turbocharged V6 engine shrugs off the big crossover's considerable weight and provides brisk performance. You'll sacrifice some fuel efficiency, but to us, the trade-off is worth it in light of the engine's extra power. The non-turbo 3.7-liter V6 in the base MKT provides adequate acceleration in most situations, though, and should satisfy most shoppers.

Likewise, you don't need the adaptive suspension of the EcoBoost model to enjoy a comfortable ride around town or during interstate cruising. The base MKT's suspension is pleasantly controlled, although this big crossover will lean considerably if you're turning sharply or at higher speeds. Either way, you'll enjoy a hushed ride, as the MKT adeptly isolates wind and road noise from the interior. The only place the MKT feels out of place is in tight parking lots because of its considerable length.

You'll notice high-quality materials as soon as you step into the 2016 Lincoln MKT. The leather is richly grained, and the wood trim on the dashboard and doors looks rich because it's the real thing. In front of the driver is Lincoln's clear and brilliant gauge cluster, which features a central speedometer flanked by configurable screens that allow you to choose multiple information modes and displays. It's all efficiently presented and premium in appearance, even if the setup doesn't provide the exhaustive detail that the systems in some rivals deliver.

Upscale vibes are reinforced if you go for the optional captain's chair layout in the MKT's second row. You'll reduce total seating capacity from seven to six, but the captain's chairs are elegant and comfortable, and the center console running full length from the front seats imparts the impression that second-row occupants will be treated to the same comforts as those in the front. This console incorporates controls for both the rear air-conditioner and the heated and ventilated seats.

The standard Sync 3 system, which replaces the generally unloved MyLincoln Touch, utilizes a smartphone-like interface that includes pinch-to-zoom and swiping motions for navigating the menus. We've yet to fully test it, but early indications are that it's a lot easier to use. Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration are also expected to be part of Sync 3.

Cargo capacity for the 2016 Lincoln MKT is 17.9 cubic feet with all seats raised, and the maximum available is 75.9 cubic feet with the second- and third-row seats folded. These are respectable figures, though the MKT's sloped roof line makes it difficult to fit taller items. Occupants in the second row enjoy generous head- and legroom, but those measures become acutely pinched in the MKT's third row, which has more than 5 fewer inches of headroom than the second row.

The 2016 Lincoln MKT is a lot of luxury-crossover SUV, but the 3.5-liter twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 is a lot of engine. It has no problem getting this big vehicle moving quickly. Once on the highway, the MKT cruises at a relaxed pace, especially when equipped with the available adaptive cruise control. "Relaxed” describes a lot about the MKT's driving style, and with all-wheel drive and Lincoln Drive Control -- both standard on EcoBoost models -- you have sure-footed grip regardless of the road conditions, coupled with Sport, Comfort and Normal throttle modes. The 6-speed automatic transmission offers seamless shifting, or manual control thanks to standard paddle shifters on the steering wheel. Yet none of this makes it easier to maneuver the bulky MKT in a tight garage or parking spot, and although the rearview camera and parking sensors help, an around-view camera, like on the Infiniti QX60, would be even better.

ECOBOOST V6 ENGINE The 365-horsepower twin-turbocharged EcoBoost V6 available for the Lincoln MKT is a real gem. It comes standard with all-wheel drive, which costs less than $ 2,000, and with a minimal fuel-economy penalty, it's nearly impossible to argue against getting it. INNOVATIVE INTERIOR We keep mentioning the difference between the interior and exterior styling, but it's true: The interior is as comfortable and pleasant as the exterior is awkward. Clever touches include an available refrigerator you can put between the 2nd-row seats, and 3rd-row seats that can flip and face backward for tailgating.

The 2016 Lincoln MKT offers a spacious and comfortable interior that's right in line with other large 3-row luxury SUVs. Front- and middle-row passengers get plenty of room, and there's enough room in the third row for smaller adults. Two comfortable captain's chairs replace the 2nd-row bench in 6-passenger models, and they can be heated and cooled, and even outfitted with a refrigerator between them. The large glass gives the driver and front passenger a commanding view, with a touch-screen infotainment system controlling navigation, climate and audio functions. Folding the 2nd- and 3rd-row seatbacks quickly expands the already generous cargo space.

It's surprising to know that the big, bulbous Lincoln MKT shares its structure with the sleek-but-boxy Ford Flex. In its own way this Lincoln SUV is just as eye-catching, although we'll leave it up to you whether it's pleasing or punishing to the eyes. Distinctive features include the massive grille, which splits into two wings and blends into the headlights, and the odd kink-then-droop of the side window line. The hunched-over rear hatch is somewhat gracelessly bisected by the long, wide taillight display. We do like the panoramic sunroof, and the power hatch is also convenient.

Order even a base-model 2016 Lincoln MKT and you get leather upholstery on the first and second rows, 3-zone climate control, heated and cooled driver and front-passenger seats, heated 2nd-row seats, a rearview camera and a power tailgate. There's also a power tilt-and-telescope steering wheel, which combines with power-adjustable pedals to let drivers find a comfortable driving position. The standard audio system offers 10 speakers and AM/FM/CD/aux inputs, all controlled via the touch-based Sync system and 8-inch screen. EcoBoost models get standard all-wheel drive and Lincoln Drive Control adjustable chassis dynamics, plus other standard equipment.

The 2016 MKT can be loaded up with all manner of luxury trim, such as a heated steering wheel, navigation system, THX II audio, and a dual-screen DVD rear-seat entertainment system. Also available are 2nd-row bucket seats and a refrigerator to go between them, and a power-folding third row. One particularly cool tech feature is Lincoln's Active Park Assist, which performs the bulk of parallel parking for the driver. Safety options include adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, a blind-spot monitoring system and inflatable seatbelts in the second row.

Standard on the 2016 MKT SUV is a naturally aspirated 3.7-liter V6, powering either the front or all four wheels (FWD, AWD). Its 303 horsepower is adequate for accelerating this heavy SUV, and although it has enough in reserve for passing, it's not particularly exciting. A better choice is the twin-turbocharged 3.5-liter EcoBoost V6. With 365 horsepower, 350 lb-ft of torque, and standard AWD, this is the perfect choice for the luxury-equals-power crowd. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission with manual-shift mode, and although both engines can run on 87-octane gasoline, Lincoln recommends 91 octane for best performance with the EcoBoost model. EcoBoost versions can be equipped to tow up to 4,500 pounds.3.7-liter V6303 horsepower @ 6,500 rpm278 lb-ft of torque @ 4,000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/24 mpg (FWD), 16/23 mpg (AWD)3.5-liter twin-turbocharged V6365 horsepower @ 5,700 rpm350 lb-ft of torque @ 1,500-5,250 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/21 mpg

A base-model front-wheel-drive 2016 Lincoln MKT carries a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) tag of a little over $ 44,000, including destination charges. The extra power of the EcoBoost engine -- and you should spring for it -- will have you paying a bit more than $ 46,000, but it comes standard with the added safety of all-wheel drive. If you pile on the options you'll top out in the $ 60,000 range once you're done loading up an MKT EcoBoost. That's between such luxury SUV models as the Buick Enclave, Infiniti QX60 and Acura MDX on the lower end, and the BMW X5 and Audi Q7 on the high end. Be sure to check the Kelley Blue Book Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area are paying for the MKT. In the long term, we expect the MKT's resale value to be lower than that of its competitors.

Lincoln MKT Overview and History

The second generation MKT crossover has an improved ride, sharper handling, better fuel economy and new safety technologies.
Lincoln sprung as an independent luxury-car producer in 1917. Founded by engineering whiz Henry M. Leland after his departure from Cadillac, which he had helped co-found, the company was named Lincoln as a reminder of the admiration Leland bore for the now defunct state-leader. In a macabre coincidence, president JFK was assassinated just like Abraham Lincoln was. At the time of  his death, JFK was being driven in a Lincoln Continental limousine.

However, before such drama occurred, Lincoln was a fairly small company that supplied Liberty aircraft engines for the Army during WWI. Having teamed up with son Wilfred, Leland converted his factory to manufacturing luxury automobiles right after the war. Despite Leland's skill and potential of his vehicles, the factory encountered several design-related obstacles and financial trouble that could not be overcome. Forced into bankruptcy, Leland sold his company to Ford in 1922 for $ 8 million.

Soon after the Ford takeover, Lincoln's first series of automobiles would enter mass production. Under Ford, Lincoln's styling problems were solved as were the financial issues  experimented before. Little changes or none were made to Leland's original engines. Coupled with production cost cuts, this would allow the company to toll out some 5,500 vehicles in December, 1922.

As of 1923, newer body styles appeared, many of them having been the result of partnerships with coachbuilders such as Fleetwood and Brunn. This lead to the appearance of  a diversified range of vehicles comprised of large sedans and limousines that could accommodate as many as 7 passengers. Despite the fairly big price tags these special coach-built vehicles came with, Lincoln sales did not plummet. They did just the contrary, registering a spectacular 45% increase over the previous years with 7,875 vehicles sold.

The 1924's brought forth the release of the famous Flyers that were extensively used by US Police Departments. The cars premiered some features that weren't introduced on private models until 2 years after. Two wheel disc breaks, weapon racks, armored windows and Police whistles were among the many 'accessories' Flyers came equipped with.

Probably the most famous car ever made by Lincoln sprouted in 1932  Eugene T. “Bob” Gregorie's drawing board. The later release of the Zephyr in 1936 smashed open the gates for the release of the Continental. The latter was actually a modified 1938 Zephyr Coupe whom Gregorie had sectioned and added a vertical tire mount to. The car became so successful that it sold in over 5000 units until production halted in 1948.

However, the Continental would not go down for good. It was later resuscitated  through the Mark II model. By 1955, the Mark II could be purchased for a stunning $ 10,000, as much as a Rolls Royce cost those days.

Later designs, such as the Town Car and the bulky Navigator, aided Lincoln in becoming the best sold luxury car brand in the US by 1998. After a brief change of ownership between 1998 and 2002 when Lincoln belonged to the Premier Automotive Group, the company returned on Ford premises where it can still be found today.

Despite its tradition as a luxury car manufacturer and presidential limousine supplier, the company has experienced a severe setback in the last few years, having lost against Asian and European imports. This is mostly due to the lack of new models, issue that Ford hopes to solve by reinventing the brand. Lincoln's ascension is still unspooling through the release of models such the MKZ and MKX.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
