Do you desire an elegant luxury sedan or a sleek sport sedan? The 2007 Volvo S60 can fill both roles, though not with the precision and refinement of many German and Japanese rivals.

A midsize, entry-level luxury sedan, the 2007 Volvo S60 is one of the more unconventional cars in the $ 30,000-$ 40,000 price range. It competes in a class dominated by cars with normally aspirated V6 engines, yet offers a trio of turbocharged five-cylinders instead. Styling is another area in which the S60 stands apart. Even seven years into the model cycle, its body lines have a distinctiveness that's, well, Scandinavian in flavor. Inside, the S60 comes across as more utilitarian than luxurious, but you'd be hard-pressed to find fault with its ergonomic control layout and orthopedically correct seats. Where you will find fault is on the performance front, where the Swedish sedan's handling dynamics are a bit dull compared to newer rivals, and in the backseat, where the S60 has less real-world legroom than Volvo's compact S40. Both of these issues could be solved by a redesign, but until that happens, buyers seeking a premium sedan that's a little different from the rest may still want to give this midrange Volvo a look.

The lineup starts out with the entry-level 2.5T, which has a light-pressure turbocharged inline-5 good for 208 horsepower; continues to the midlevel T5, which has a higher-pressure 2.4-liter turbo five good for 258 hp; and tops out with the S60 R, which gets a high-boost version of the 2.5-liter rated for an even 300 hp. Most S60s are sold with front-wheel drive, but the R has a standard all-wheel-drive system -- it's offered as an option on the 2.5T. An automatic transmission is standard on all 2.5Ts, but S60 T5 and R buyers have their choice of a manual or automatic. All S60s come with a complete list of safety features, including stability control and anti-whiplash seats, and the midsize Volvo has performed quite well in crash tests.

On the road, the acceleration in the S60 2.5T and T5 can feel a little sluggish when compared to competitors like the Acura TL, Audi A4, BMW 3 Series, Infiniti G35 and Lexus ES 350 and IS 250/350, which have larger-displacement six-cylinder engines. And although the Volvos ride smoothly, they're not as composed over bumps as any of these rivals. The S60 R is downright quick, though, and offers an interesting alternative for enthusiasts willing to give a little on handling precision and ride quality.

On their own, any of the 2007 Volvo S60s would be satisfying to own, as they offer plenty in the way of comfort, safety and Scandinavian personality. However, with so many newer sedans populating this price range, it would be a good idea to try a few other cars before closing a deal on this aging Volvo.

A midsize, entry-luxury sedan, the 2007 Volvo S60 comes in three trim levels -- base 2.5T, midrange T5 and high-performance R -- each of which comes with a different engine. The 2.5T is equipped with 16-inch alloy wheels, cloth upholstery, a power driver seat with memory, dual-zone automatic climate control (with a pollen filter), a CD player, a telescoping steering wheel and faux wood interior accents. Stepping up to the S60 T5 provides a sport-tuned suspension, 17-inch alloy wheels, a power passenger seat and an auto-dimming rearview mirror. Choose the S60 R and you'll get an even firmer adaptive suspension, performance tires, bi-xenon headlights, a rear deck spoiler, leather upholstery, bolstered sport seats and metallic blue gauge faces.

Options include an excellent 13-speaker Dolby sound system with an in-dash CD changer, a navigation system, Sirius satellite radio, a sunroof, heated front seats, rain-sensing wipers and an interior air quality system (which monitors contaminant levels in incoming air and closes the vents as necessary). S60 2.5T and T5 buyers can also get the bi-xenons and a leather interior. Eighteen-inch wheels are available on the T5 and R. A lower body kit and premium leather upholstery are exclusive S60 R extras.

Each member of the 2007 Volvo S60 family has its own engine. The S60 2.5T has a turbocharged, 2.5-liter inline five-cylinder rated for 208 hp and 236 pound-feet of torque. A five-speed automatic transmission is standard with this engine, and it routes power either to the front wheels or all four on all-wheel-drive models, which are designated 2.5T AWD.

Next up is the S60 T5, which has a slightly smaller 2.4-liter inline-5 but uses a higher-boost turbocharger, helping it produce 257 hp and 258 lb-ft of torque. The T5 is front-wheel drive only, but buyers have their choice of a five-speed automatic or a six-speed manual gearbox. The automatic has a manual mode, a feature that's optional on 2.5T models.

Finally, there's the high-performance R. It has a 2.5-liter, turbocharged five-cylinder that pumps out 300 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque. All S60 Rs are all-wheel drive, and both a six-speed manual and a six-speed automatic are available. Equipped with the manual, the S60 R will accelerate to 60 mph in 5.4 seconds, says Volvo. With the automatic, it takes a full second longer.

Safety features include antilock disc brakes, stability control, front-seat side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, anti-submarine seats with whiplash-reducing head restraints, and Volvo's OnCall telematics. Rear parking assist is optional only on the S60 R. In government crash testing, the 2007 Volvo S60 earned four out of five stars for the driver and front passenger in the frontal-impact category. It earned five stars for both front- and rear side-impact protection. In frontal offset crash testing conducted by the IIHS, the Volvo S60 received a "Good" rating overall (the best possible).

The S60 2.5T offers adequate power for most drivers, while the T5 model is quicker but heavy on turbo lag off the line. If you can afford it, the S60 R is by far the most enjoyable, with minimal lag and brisk response at any speed. All S60s provide a ride that veers more toward comfort than sport, but they aren't as composed as similarly priced rivals over bumps and expansion joints. Handling is competent but limits are modest on 2.5T and T5 models. The S60 R is more capable on back roads, as its adaptive suspension offers multiple modes, allowing drivers to select firmer damping in this environment. Overall, the R is an entertaining car, though it's not as sharp or communicative as cars like the 330i, G35 or IS 350. S60s are known for their strong brakes, and all models exhibit impressive stopping ability.

The Volvo S60's interior is functional but doesn't feel upscale unless you order the leather upholstery and Dolby Surround Sound options. The controls are nicely weighted, but the pictograms depicting the various functions can be difficult to understand at first. There is seating for five, and although front occupants will bask in the comfort of the Volvo's orthopedically designed seats, rear passengers will likely find the legroom tight. Trunk space measures just under 14 cubic feet, and the rear seat folds in a 60/40 split on all trims.

Those who crave power should opt for the top-of-the-line S60 R. Though the R's twin-turbo five-cylinder configuration is not as smooth or refined as its competitors' six and eight-cylinder engines, the 300 horsepower it generates should make up for any supposed and slight refinement issues. The all-wheel-drive system enhances the R model's ability to stick to the road but, push this car to the limits, and you may notice the steering response becoming less crisp. As good as it is, the S60 R seems perhaps not quite as communicative as its counterparts from BMW and Audi. Still, the R packs a lot of performance into a sedan that costs less than $ 40K, and it should prove satisfying to most enthusiast-oriented drivers. And, finally, with any Volvo you cannot forget or ignore the brand's exemplary safety reputation.

Sport SeatsThe amazingly comfortable sport seats on the Type R grab hold of you and seem to never let go.Navigation SystemThe optional navigation system features a retractable screen positioned atop the dash instead of integrated into the audio.

No matter which S60 you choose, all models share two important traits: A roomy, ergonomically-sound interior and an exceptional safety record. The S60's front seats feel great on your back and feature an anti-submarine design to keep you from sliding under the dash during an accident. Functionally, the S60's near-perfect instrument panel has every switch, lever and button within easy reach of both driver and passenger. We love the placement of the optional navigation screen, which rises up from atop the dash rather than being integrated into the audio head unit.

The S60's new front end has a softer, more rounded appearance, although the familiar diagonal badge grille treatment remains firmly in place. The S60's shape is defined by its sharpened V-shaped hood and trunk lines that join to form a truly attractive sport sedan. The swept-back rear roof creates a nice fastback look and allows the rear doors plenty of glass to aid visibility. In recent years Volvo has produced a number of attractive new wheel designs to enhance the S60's appearance. The S60 R receives extra ground effects and a lower front and rear spoiler.

The S60 has a five-speed automatic transmission, four-wheel anti-lock disc brakes (ABS), Dynamic Stability Traction Control, dual-zone automatic air conditioning, illuminated remote keyless entry, rear fog light, dual heated power mirrors, AM/FM stereo with cassette and CD, front side-impact and front and rear head-curtain airbags, cruise control, tilt/telescopic steering wheel, 16-inch alloy wheels, garage door opener and a power driver's seat. The T5 adds aluminum trim, power passenger seat, sport suspension and 17-inch alloy wheels. The premium R model has a 300-horsepower engine, six-speed manual transmission, all-wheel drive, Brembo brakes, xenon headlamps, leather seats and wider 17-inch alloy wheels.

Options vary by trim and include a five-speed Geartronic automatic transmission (six-speed on the R), all-wheel drive, power glass moonroof, heated seats, headlamp washers, rain-sensing wipers, Pro Logic surround sound, navigation, active xenon headlamps, leather seats and custom alloy wheels.

The 2.5T engine provides good acceleration and plenty of passing power. This engine works well with the automatic transmission, though the optional Geartronic's somewhat lazy shifts left us wishing for a manual option. The high-pressure turbo on the T5 seems to be the best choice for the S60, with better low-end torque than the 2.5T and more rush as the turbo builds boost pressure. The S60 R provides a big boost in power, but its performance-oriented nature and higher price tag will probably not appeal to the average S60 buyer.2.5-liter in-line 5 Light-Pressure Turbo208 horsepower @ 5000 rpm236 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4500 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/30 (FWD), 20/27 (AWD)2.4-liter in-line 5 High-Pressure Turbo257 horsepower @ 5500 rpm258 lb.-ft. of torque @ 5000 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 21/28 (manual), 20/28 (automatic)2.5-liter in-line 5 Twin Turbo300 horsepower @ 5500 rpm295 lb.-ft. of torque @ 5250 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/24 (manual), 17/25 (automatic)

The S60 2.5T has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price of $ 31,580, the T5 model starts at $ 33,430 and the high-performance S60 R has an MSRP of $ 39,680. To be sure you make your best deal, check the Fair Purchase Price, which shows the typical transaction price paid for the S60 in your area. As for resale values, the S60 does not perform as well as similar vehicles from Audi, Lexus, Infiniti and BMW, holding an average five-year residual value on par with the Cadillac CTS and Lincoln MKZ. The T5 and R models, however, do hold slightly higher residual values than the base 2.5T.

Volvo S60 Overview and History

Volvo S60 is a 4-door sedan which was first introduced by the Swedish carmaker in 2000, being refreshed in 2004 with an updated version.
AB Volvo is a world-leading Swedish manufacturer of commercial vehicles, trucks, buses and construction equipment, drive systems for marine and industrial applications, aerospace components and financial services. But it did start out as a car manufacturer, founded by Assar Gabrielsson and Gustaf Larsson. The main purpose of the company was to produce the safest cars possible, following the death of Assar's wife in a car crash. The automaker was founded April 14, 1927 in the city of Gothenburg, as a spin-off from roller ball bearing maker SKF (Svenska Kullagerfabriken AB).

The name Volvo was originally registered in May 1915 as a separate company within SKF AB and as a registered trademark with the intention to be used for a special series of ball bearing, but this idea was only used for a short period of time and SKF decided to use "SKF" as the trademark for all its bearing products. Volvo AB began to function on the 10th of August 1926 when the SKF Sales Manager Assar Gabrielsson and Engineer Gustav Larson, started production of 10 prototypes and set up the car-manufacturing business Volvo AB within SKF group. Volvo AB was introduced at the Stockholm stock exchange in 1935 and SKF then decided to sell its shares in the company.

The first series produced Volvo automobile, called 'ÖV4' left the factory on 14 April 1927. Just 996 cars were produced between 1927-1929. 'ÖV4' was replaced by model PV651 in April 1929. Its success on the market helped Volvo buy out their engine manufacturer and thus become a serious car producer. By 1931, it was already returning its first dividend to shareholders.

After it reached a production milestone of 10,000 cars in May 1932, Volvo then targeted a new demographic segment, aiming to make their cars cheaper, a car “for the people”. This was going to be the PV 51 which came out in 1936 which was a smaller version of the PV36.

The PV444 was one of the most significant cars of the war era, the first true small car, a mixture of American flair and European size, it would become a resonant success and the best sold model throughout the 60s. The P1800 was Volvo's first sports car, made in the early 60s and it was so popular that it was featured in the hit TV series “The Saint” starring Roger Moore.

Safety and quality were still paramount for Volvo and that's why the 240 series which replaced the 140 had even more safety innovations in that department, like crumple zones, rear facing child seats and collapsible steering columns. Together with the smaller 340 models, they would make for most of the sales during the 70s and 80s for Volvo.

The 90s brought with them a totally new model, the 850, a front-wheel drive, executive car which won numerous awards for handling and safety features. By now, productions costs were mounting up and Volvo was one of the few independent producers out there, after a proposed deal with Renault fell through in 1993. This forced the company to seek new marketing strategies and that's how the sleeker S40 and V40 models were introduced in the factory's production line.

The new models brought a breath of fresh air, just like the C70 coupe and convertible, which are responsible for revitalizing the Volvo image while keeping in tune with the old tradition of safety and quality.

The buyout of Volvo Cars was announced on January 28, 1998. Until then, Volvo Cars was owned by AB Volvo (the commercial vehicles group). In the following year acquisition for Volvo Cars by American car maker Ford Motor Co. was completed at a price of $ 6.45 billion USD. Volvo used the funds from the sale of the automobile division to finance the purchase of Scania, another leading Swedish truck manufacturer, but the deal was stopped for competition reasons by the European Union. Instead Volvo acquired the commercial vehicles division of French Renault and the American truck manufacturer Mack Trucks (which was owned by Renault at the time). As part of the arangement to buy Renault Trucks, the former parent company, Renault, bought in turn 20 percent in shares in AB Volvo. Among the reasons why Volvo took the initiative to sell the automobile manufacturing was the increasing development costs for new car models, coupled with the fact that it was a relatively small producer. The strategy was instead to grow as a truck manufacturer where it had a stronger market position.

Volvo Automotive's motto is "Volvo for life" attributed to the reliability and safety of their cars. Volvo means "I roll" in Latin. Combined with their company symbol, (commonly mistaken for the male symbol) which actually stands for iron ore and according to the company, represents "Rolling Strength".

2007 Volvo S60 Consumer Reviews

Shocked
The first car we test drove was a '07 S60, we both liked the car a lot but we had other cars to test drive. After test driving every 4 door salon on the market we came back to the Volvo, it was everything we wanted. Great performance, very comfortable, good fuel economy and of course being a Volvo very safe. After a month of ownership, well the negative is of course the back seat, if you are traveling with friends make sure the don't have legs, on the other hand if your like us and don't have to worry about people in the back seat then this is a car to look at. On the highway it is a fantastic cruiser, ranking right up there with my 500E. In short, test drive it, you may well be shocked.

Daughter's Volvo
My daughter was in a serious accident in my 2003 S-60. She was hit from behind by a truck while at a red light. The car was totaled she was fine. I leased a 2007 the next day and found it better than the 03, The turbo is very peppy the handling on the awd is excellent and the dtsc is great in wet weather. I would highly recommend this car. Fuel mileage is also very good on regular gas.
hinnisdalteith, 05/17/2010
Very solid entry level sedan
I recently purchased this vehicle as preowned and after reviewing other consumer reports and reviews, and I am very pleased with it so far. I agree with what other people have noted and it seems pretty accurate far as performance and drivability goes for most drivers like me ( everyday commute for BASIC entry level luxury sedan). It has very nice standard features as noted in specs and does seem utilitarian overall and not as sophisticated as a BMW or Lexus but it seems more functional and solid. I would highly recommend it for someone with kids or someone looking for value in a sedan with good standard features and known for safety.

Pleased So Far
Just purchased this auto after turning in a leased Mercedes C300. I loved that car so stepping down is going to be a bummer. However, I am pleased thus far about the Volvo. Good ride, though not sporty at all, and quality seats help it. I like the safety record and the reliability prospects for the car.

"Love This Car"
Have owned this car for 13 years now and the power, ride, seat comfort and quality are excellent. You would barely know this car was 13 years old. It has held up very well with few repairs needed except for regular maintenance.

"Dont buy volvo"
Spend your money on toyota or Honda. Volvos do not age well, have expensive repair$ , have proprietary equipment and are not designed for the consumer himself to maintain . The ride is marginal and lots of rattles and broken plastic in the cab. Ive spent a lot of money fixing mine up so I wouldnt have to buy a newer car. I wonder every day if that was a wise decision. I won't own another Volvo.

2006 Volvo S60
"An excellent vehicle"
This car was my first car after owning it for about a year there’s only been 1 minor problem and it was the break light switch which was an easy 60$ replacement. Even with the high mileage it is the best driving car I’ve ever driven. The comfort is better than my parents brand new 2018 car and even so this car has been better in almost every way. With the all wheel drive it handles winters with ease. Car does shift wierd in the cold, so I just make sure I let it run for a few minutes in the morning to get it warmed up. This car has been and hopefully will be great for the coming years!
