Practical, safe and enjoyable to drive, the 2007 Subaru Forester offers an excellent balance of upscale features and all-weather drivability.

Fluctuating gas prices, SUV backlash and a general attitude that less may actually be more are all adding up to one thing: smaller, easier-to-drive crossover sport-utility vehicles. While nearly every manufacturer has a compact crossover SUV in its lineup right now, Subaru was one of the first carmakers to jump into this segment when it introduced the Forester for 1998. The company redesigned it for 2003, leaving in all the things that made this small SUV popular the first time around, while adding new features, higher-quality cabin materials and fresh styling in hopes of keeping a steady stream of newcomers at bay. Although the second-generation Subaru Forester has never been a runaway success, this compact sport-ute has been a steady seller for Subaru, as consumers are attracted to its lower stance, easygoing personality and top-notch safety ratings.

Most Foresters are sold with a 2.5-liter, horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine rated for 173 horsepower. Acceleration is adequate with this engine but hardly thrilling alongside the many V6-equipped competitors in this segment. Fortunately, Subaru also offers a 224-hp turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter, and thusly equipped, the '07 Forester is one of the quickest compact SUVs on the road. Handling isn't as tight as some of the newer SUVs in this class, but the Subie is still acceptably responsive. Ride quality is smooth as well, although there's a bit too much road noise on the highway.

Our only major complaint about the 2007 Subaru Forester is the limited legroom in the backseat, which can be a problem both for adults and for toddlers riding in bulky car seats. For younger families, this drawback may be easily offset by the Forester's stellar performance in NHTSA and IIHS frontal- and side-impact crash tests. However, for families with taller children and teenagers, roomier competitors like the Ford Escape, Honda CR-V, Hyundai Santa Fe, Mazda CX-7, Mitsubishi Outlander and Toyota RAV4 may have more appeal. That's not to say that the Subaru Forester doesn't offer a desirable all-around package despite its advancing age. But with so much competition in today's small-SUV class, we recommend that prospective buyers test-drive a range of candidates to ensure that all of their needs are met.

A compact SUV, the 2007 Subaru Forester comes with two engines: a base, normally aspirated 2.5-liter four-cylinder and a turbocharged version of that power plant. Foresters with the base engine carry a "2.5 X" designation and come in base, Sports, Premium Package and L.L. Bean trim levels. Models with the turbo engine carry a "2.5 XT" designation and come in Sports and Limited trim levels.

The base Forester 2.5 X includes 16-inch steel wheels, a roof rack, air-conditioning (with cabin air filtration), a four-speaker CD stereo, full power accessories, keyless entry and a wiper de-icer. Next up is the Sports version of the 2.5 X, which adds automatic climate control and an MP3/WMA-capable stereo with an in-dash CD changer and auxiliary input jack. The 2.5 X Premium Package gains popular items like alloy wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, rear disc brakes, a sunroof, a power driver seat and front seat heaters. Step up to the L.L. Bean model to get a Forester with a self-leveling rear suspension, leather upholstery, an auto-dimming rearview mirror and sturdier plastic trim in the cargo bay.

For the turbocharged models, the Sports 2.5 XT is equipped just like the Sports 2.5 X, but has 17-inch wheels, a limited-slip differential, rear disc brakes and electroluminescent gauges. The Forester XT Limited is equipped like the L.L. Bean model, except for its 17-inch wheels, unique instrumentation and upgraded seven-speaker audio system. Notable options on the Subaru Forester include a cargo bin, various cargo nets, splash guards, wheel locks and a rubber rear bumper cover.

Standard on all 2.5 X models is a 2.5-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine that makes 173 hp and 166 pound-feet of torque. If you need extra power, opt for one of the XT models, which have a turbocharged version of the 2.5-liter engine good for 224 hp and 226 lb-ft of torque. All trim levels give you the choice of a five-speed manual or four-speed automatic transmission, except the L.L. Bean, which takes the automatic only. Like all Subaru vehicles, the Forester comes standard with full-time all-wheel drive. Manual-transmission-equipped vehicles have a Hill Holder clutch feature that keeps them from rolling back on steep inclines.

ABS is standard on all 2007 Subaru Foresters; additionally, all models except the base and 2.5 X Sports models have four-wheel disc brakes. Other safety features include active front head restraints and front-seat side airbags that provide head and torso protection. The IIHS gave the Forester a "Good" rating (its best) for frontal offset and side-impact crashes, and named it a "Best Pick" in the compact SUV class. The Subaru Forester also earned a perfect five stars in all front- and side-impact testing conducted by the NHTSA. If safety is of utmost importance in your selection of a small SUV, the Forester should be seriously considered.

The base 2.5-liter engine provides adequate performance, but for those seeking maximum acceleration, we recommend one of the XT models paired with the standard five-speed manual transmission. Few small SUVs can match the fun of a turbocharged Forester when it comes to straight-line acceleration. In terms of handling, the Forester is stable and predictable even when pushed to its limits. The steering is a bit vague at speed, and the soft suspension tuning results in some body roll, but for day-to-day driving, the 2007 Subaru Forester should be comfortable enough to suit most drivers. Our only complaint in this regard is excessive road noise at highway speeds.

Even in the base 2.5 X version, the Subaru Forester has a well-appointed interior with quality materials, tight build quality and simple controls. Add leather seating and the Forester has an upscale look and feel not often found in other small SUVs. The front seats are comfortable and supportive, but the rear-seat legroom is tight for adults. It can even be a problem for toddlers in car seats, who are apt to park their tiny Stride Rites on the front seatbacks. On the other hand, there are a generous 32 cubic feet of cargo space behind the rear seat and a low lift-over height makes it easy to get groceries in and out. With the seats folded, there are a maximum of 58 cubic feet.

Especially with the newly-tweaked turbocharged engine, Foresters are eager and frisky performers with just a touch of satisfying crudeness. Acceleration is especially snappy with the manual gearbox, which instills a more youthful nature. Considerably snugger inside than Subaru's new B9 Tribeca, the Forester yields ample headroom in both front and rear.Rear-seat legroom is fair, and toe space is excellent. On smooth surfaces at least, the ride isn't bad, though choppiness is evident. The turbo engine is a little buzzy, but not oppressively so, though road vibration is noticeable. Gauges and controls are ordinary but sensibly arranged.

Hill HolderManual-shift models are equipped with a Hill Hold feature that helps keep the Forester from rolling backward when starting on an upgrade.Symmetrical All-Wheel DriveThat's what Subaru calls it but, in fact, two distinct systems are offered. Manual-shift Foresters get Continuous All-Wheel Drive with a 50/50 front/rear torque split, while those with an automatic transmission are equipped with Active All-Wheel Drive, which incorporates a continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch and direct power to the wheels that need traction most, in response to changing conditions.

Stepping inside, which is easy to do, the Forester's interior appearance is familiar, but modifications have increased its utility and comfort. A multi-functional center console features a sliding armrest, while, in the cargo area, floor bars are accompanied by four utility hooks. A passenger seatback net storage pocket has been installed in the 2.5 X, which also offers front and rear cup holders and a rear-seat folding armrest. Nearly two inches of thigh support have been added to the rear-seat cushion and the standard retractable cargo cover is high enough to accommodate tall items.

Fresh from a makeover in 2006, the Forester's appearance has changed a bit to bring it a "more unified, sophisticated, and more modern form," according to Subaru. Smooth side cladding and more curvaceous rear glass produce a clean look. Last year's makeover included increasing the ground clearance to eight inches. The Forester sports a familiar front fascia, grille, four-lamp headlight cluster, bumper and fenders, and outside mirrors are bigger with integrated turn signals available. The heavy-duty four-wheel independent suspension has been retuned for enhanced performance.

All Foresters with the naturally-aspirated engine are called 2.5 X, and include head/chest side-impact airbags, anti-lock brakes (ABS), 16-inch wheels, air conditioning, an AM/FM/Weather-band stereo with CD player and remote keyless entry. In the 2.5 X L.L. Bean Edition the durable finish on the floor and seatback is extended to the cargo area side walls, and also included are desert beige leather-trimmed upholstery with perforated Alcantara bolsters, a security system with shock sensor and a Momo wood/leather steering wheel. The 2.5 XT Limited, the sole turbocharged model, includes a premium package with leather-trimmed upholstery and sporty electroluminescent gauge pointers.

Subaru's premium package, available on the 2.5 X only, adds rear disc brakes, electronic brake-force distribution, eight-spoke alloy wheels, a limited-slip rear differential, panoramic glass moonroof, heated front seats, automatic climate control and a six-CD changer.

Subaru's 2.5-liter, horizontally-opposed (boxer configuration) four-cylinder engine is in naturally-aspirated form for 2.5 X models and turbocharged for the 2.5 XT Limited. Manual-transmission models have Continuous All-Wheel Drive, while those with a four-speed automatic transmission have Active All-Wheel Drive, which includes a continuously variable hydraulic transfer clutch.2.5-liter Boxer-4173 horsepower @ 6000 rpm166 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/29 (manual), 23/28 (automatic)2.5-liter Boxer-4 Turbocharged224 horsepower @ 5600 rpm226 lb.-ft. of torque at 3600 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 20/27 (manual), 21/26 (automatic)

With a manual transmission, the 2.5 X has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 21,820, while the automatic-transmission adds another $ 800 to the bottom line. Offered only with an automatic transmission, the 2.5 X L.L. Bean Edition is $ 27,320, while the turbocharged XT Limited starts at $ 28,520. A look a the Fair Purchase Price shows the typical transaction price paid for the Forester in your area, so be sure to check it out before you begin negotiating. Resale and residual values for the Forester tend to be slightly better than for a Ford Escape or Mazda Tribute, but Honda's CR-V leads in value as a pre-owned vehicle.

Subaru Forester Overview and History

The 2005 Forester is an improved version of the 2002 edition which comes with a couple of new features and upgraded parts that improved its offroad capabilities.
Subaru actually means “unite” and it refers to the six stars on the logo that stand for the 6 companies that are united under the FHI group. The largest of the stars represents Fuji Heavy Industries. The company started out in 1917 in Japan as a aircraft research laboratory but soon moved to producing airplanes.

After WWII, the company created a scooter, the Fuji Rabbit with the spare parts from airplanes. Pretty soon, the company split up into different business that manufactured scooters, coaches, engines and chassis. Then CEO Kenji Kita decided that it would be a good idea to get involved in car making and pretty soon the first Subaru car was created, the Subaru 1500 (1954).

The 1500 or P1 was followed by the 360 in 1958, the Sambar in 1961, the 1000 in 1965, gthe 1100 and the R2 in 1969. During the 70s, the Leone came out and then later, in the 80s, the Alcyclone (1985) and the Legacy (1989) were added to the Subaru line-up.

Slowly, in the 90s, the company moved away from the manufacture of small vehicles and concentrated on rally cars, such as the Vivio and Impreza. Different versions of the Impreza WRX won the world championship several times under drivers such as Colin McRae.

Using the technology from the aeronautical industry, Subaru employed many successful inventions in the automotive industry. One of the first was the us of horizontally opposed “boxer” engines as well as the use of monocoque construction. Also, Subaru is the only car manufacturer to offer all-wheel drive as a standard on most of its models. The Japanese manufacturer was also the first to introduce electronic continuously variable transmission (ECTV) which replaces standard gears and gives smooth acceleration while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.

Subaru also takes a keen interest in environmental protection, having achieved an odd  record: 0 landfill status for their plant in Lafayette, Indiana which means that the factory generates no trash. Also, the company has an extensive recycling program for its own cars, not to mention the program for hybrid and fuel efficient cars.

New Subaru
I just bought my Subaru this month. I am slightly disappointed in the mileage. I get 23 in town but my highway drive is 25.5. I am hoping this will get better.

2007 Forester XT Sport, my 1st and last Subaru
I purchased a 2007 Forester XT Sport (the turbo version) with the expectation that I would be getting a car that was fun to drive, reliable, and had AWD. It has been anything, but reliable. At about 44k miles, the check engine light came on. When I went to have the car diagnosed, the dealer said I had P1410, P2431, P2432, and P2444 fault codes showing up indicating that I had a problem with the secondary air valve. That problem, was a $ 1200 fix, as my car was outside the 36k warranty. At 61k miles, the radiator cracked and sprayed fluid all over the engine bay. That was a $ 540 repair. Needless to say, I am done with this car and will not be buying another Subaru because of it.

Practical and reliable
This is the second Forester we have bought and it's just a great, practical car.

This is my first Subaru. I've owned mostly Toyotas. I love the Boxer engine and the feel of AWD. I put two of my buddies inside for a spin and surprised them when the front end "launched" straight up when accelerated. From the outside this car looks like a soccer-mom transport.

"Reliable,Cheap to maintain"
Bought at 112k miles seven years later I am buying this for $ 3,000 from my parents they paid $ 9k 71k miles and 7 years ago. Great car it survived them Dad liked to use the gas it did not let him down all the times he climbed the mountain. More or less ramped it at the speed he thought he had to do to get over it. It honestly feels like a mini truck and i have used it as one ,infact it is classified as one. You should definitely consider one... By the way I'm a huge VW fan and I loved this car.

2008 Subaru Forester
"Quick, practical, and quirky."
After owning 4 other Subaru’s, as well as a Honda, and daily driving my dads MGB, and working at the local Audi/VW dealership for almost a year, I can comfortably and genuinely say that this is my favorite car I have ever driven. It’s fast (mine is an XT), it handles well, it looks gorgeous, and it’s practical. I can fit a bike in the back, or multiple peoples luggage, or a weekends worth of photography equipment and clothing. That isn’t to say that there aren’t things I’ll change on it. I’m going to lower the car about 2.5 inches for some more sports car-like handling, and eventually I’ll do power and interior upgrades. However, as the car sits right now, i’m absolutely in love. Now, those annoying quirks that you only find out when you move in together. Loud. Loud, loud loud loud, and loud. I commute roughly 25 miles per day, on an interstate that varies between 60-70mph, so I do 65-75mph. And the road and wind noise is appalling. This might be due in part to semi worn tires, and poor road quality, but be warned. Subaru’s are not luxury. Another thing, associated costs. Fuel. See my commute notes above. For the 3000 miles I’ve put on this car so far, commuting on fast roads, and in the city, I’ve averaged 20.1 mpg. And it’s premium gas. Ouch. Insurance. Im a young male. Compared to my previous Honda Accord, my monthly rates went up about 80 dollars per month, with every other variable staying equal. Overall: I am in love. Buy this car. I have the XT Sports edition, and it’s a looker. She handles well, I can’t take a bad picture of her, you’ll get compliments everywhere you’ll go, you’ll connect with the local Subaru community, and you won’t regret it. I promise.
