The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette is the best sports car deal on the planet with its world-class performance, sexy styling and daily driver practicality.

Perhaps the best performance bargain ever in the history of sports cars, the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette makes fast friends with those who like to go fast affordably and comfortably. During its last revamping in 2005, the Corvette picked up more power in the form of the 6.0-liter "LS2" V8 that allowed the standard Corvette admission into the hallowed 400-horsepower club. All that power along with a choice of three suspension levels, an improved interior and revised styling (that visually lessened the chunky rear end) make this the best Vette yet.

With acceleration, braking and handling stats that are fully equal to sports cars that cost up to three times as much, the Chevy Corvette could stop there, rest on its laurels and still be a great car. But there's more to the Corvette's appeal, including its user-friendly cockpit, massive amount of luggage space and ride quality that's comfortable enough for daily commuting and long freeway slogs. There are also a wide range of Corvettes to choose from: the standard removable-top coupe, a convertible, and the ferocious Z06, a fixed-roof coupe that takes it to another level with its track-ready suspension and 7.0-liter, "LS7" V8 that cranks out a tire-frying 505 hp. In addition, this year brings the Indy Pace Car convertible (which features Atomic orange paint with gold ribbon stripes, split-spoke wheels and special seat embroidery) and the Ron Fellows Edition Z06 (which is named after a victorious Corvette driver in the American Le Mans series and features red fender stripes on a white body along with a red and black two-tone cockpit).

Downsides to the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette are few and center chiefly on the interior. Although the Vette's interior is better than before, especially in terms of build quality, it's still too plain and has too much plastic trim for a car in this price range. This year's availability of two-tone leather seating with embroidery accents adds a few points here, but in the end, the cockpit still isn't the equal of some sports cars such as BMW's M variant of the Z4 or Porsche's Boxster and Cayman. Nor can it quite match those European cars' more precise and nimble road feel. But for the majority of shoppers in this segment, those items shouldn't be much of a deterrent. For the money, it doesn't get any better than the Corvette.

Although officially noted as being available in two body styles, a coupe and a convertible, the 2007 Chevrolet Corvette in essence offers three: targa-roof coupe, fixed-roof coupe and convertible. The standard Corvette coupe has a removable roof panel (a.k.a. "targa") that allows nearly the same open-air experience as a true convertible, whereas the Corvette Z06 coupe's roof looks the same but is fixed in place. The convertible is for roadster purists, and its top, as tradition dictates, hides under a flip-open panel that lies flush with the body. The coupe and convertible come well-equipped with features such as xenon headlamps, keyless entry and startup, a tire-pressure monitor, leather seating, a six-way power driver seat and dual-zone automatic climate control. Notable options for the standard coupe and convertible include a navigation system, a transparent roof panel for the coupe, a head-up display, a driver-seat memory and a seven-speaker Bose audio system. A couple of suspension options are available as well: the Magnetic Ride Control suspension, which automatically firms up and softens the suspension in milliseconds according to how the car is being driven, and the Z51 performance handling package, which adds extra cooling; stiffer springs, shocks and stabilizer bars; bigger brakes with cross-drilled rotors; specific tires and shorter gearing for the six-speed manual. The Z06 maintains most of the regular Corvette coupe's features but gains a lightweight aluminum frame, wider wheels and tires, a more stiffly tuned suspension, better brakes and special sport seats.

Base coupe and convertible Corvettes come with a 6.0-liter LS2 V8, rated at 400 hp and 400 pound-feet of torque. The Z06 boasts a stunning 505 hp and 470 lb-ft from its 7.0-liter LS7 V8. A six-speed manual gearbox is standard across the board, while a new six-speed automatic is a no-charge option for the base coupe and convertible. Either engine delivers stunning performance: The regular Corvette with an automatic runs the quarter in 12.8 seconds, while the Z06 turns in a blistering 12.2-second effort.

Four-wheel ventilated, antilock disc brakes are standard. Side-impact airbags are optional and head curtain airbags are not available. The latest Chevy Corvette features a superb stability control and traction control system as standard. Called "Active Handling," this system has been programmed to provide noninvasive assistance, and its performance driving mode gives the driver even more control at the track while still maintaining a safety net.

Endless power from either snarling V8 combined with a tight suspension results in a sports car that never ceases to put a smile on your face. All three of the suspension packages deliver a compliant ride along with white-knuckled handling abilities. The 2007 Chevrolet Corvette can serve equally well as a comfortable touring car or world-class performance machine. The Z06 version is an unforgettable monster on the street that is still docile enough to serve as one's daily driver.

Compared to the earlier pre-2005 Corvette ("C5"), the latest version's cabin is much improved in terms of its materials and build quality. Functionally, it's blessed with large gauges, intuitive controls, usable cupholders and massive cargo capacity (22.4 cubic feet in coupes and 11 cubes in the convertible). The optional navigation system is likewise easy to use. Although this year brings the option of snazzy two-tone leather seating with embroidered accents, the 2007 Corvette's interior quality and seat comfort are still a step behind its European sports car rivals.

Despite the Corvette's ample size, the lightweight Z06 is amazingly athletic. The Corvette's marvelous Active Handling system features three progressive settings that allow skilled and experienced drivers to explore the massive tires' traction limits with a significantly reduced danger of punching a hole in the scenery. Hauling the Z06 down from its aggressive speeds is a set of huge front brakes, using six-piston calipers with six separate pads (for more equalized wear) on vented and cross-drilled 14-inch rotors. If that's not enough, the four-piston, four-pad rear calipers operate on 13.4-inch vented, cross-drilled rotors. The six-speed heavy-duty manual gearbox is a trifle crude in its operation, yet the clutch seems surprisingly light. If there's a better power adrenaline rush available at or near this price, we haven't found it.

LS7 Gen IV V8Essentially a racing engine in a road car, this ultimate iteration of the legendary Chevrolet small-block V8 is hand-assembled at GM Powertrain's new Performance Build Center in Wixom, Michigan.Active HandlingThis amazingly effective dynamic chassis control system is smarter, less intrusive and more adept than ever at reining in all that torque and power when necessary.

Despite its race-inspired capability, the Z06 is designed to be a comfortable daily driver. Like other 2007 Corvettes, it has a small-diameter steering wheel for more precise steering feel. The two-tone leather seats have contrasting stitching with Z06-logo embroidery. A revised gauge cluster includes a 7000-rpm redline tachometer and a new oil pressure gauge readout reflecting the dry-sump system's higher pressures. On the other hand, there's less acoustic insulation (to reduce weight and allow more pulse-pounding aural feedback from the powertrain), the seats are lighter and their fixed side bolsters more supportive, and the passenger seat adjustments are manual to save the weight of a power-adjust motor.

Chevrolet's fixed-roof Z06 coupe has several distinctive and functional design features that set it apart from "ordinary" C6 Corvettes. The Z06 has a wider body with a larger grille opening, a cold-air scoop ahead of the hood that feeds the engine's air inlet system, flared front wheel openings with large air extractors behind the wheels, widely flared rear fenders with brake cooling scoops ahead of the wheels, a small functional rear spoiler that houses the center high-mounted stop light (CHMSL), larger quad stainless steel exhaust outlets, special 10-spoke wheels (18-inch front and 19-inch rear) and newly-designed Z06 front fender badges.

The well-equipped Z06 comes with standard leather seating, dual-zone air conditioning with cabin air filtration, fog lamps, high-intensity discharge (HID) headlamps and Head-Up Display (HUD) with track mode and G-force meter.

Z06 options include polished wheels, a power telescoping steering wheel, heated seats, driver and passenger side-impact airbags, universal home remote, XM Satellite Radio, OnStar and a Bose premium audio system with an in-dash six-disc CD changer.

The Z06's all-aluminum 7.0-liter LS7 V8 boasts competition-style dry-sump lubrication, titanium connecting rods and intake valves and specific block, front cover, oil pan, exhaust manifolds and cylinder heads, compared to the 400-horsepower 6.0-liter LS2 standard Corvette engine. The only available transmission is a Tremec six-speed manual.7.0-liter V8 LS7505 horsepower @ 6300 rpm470 lb.-ft. of torque @ 4800 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 16/26

The Chevrolet Corvette Z06 has a Manufacturer's Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) of $ 70,000. Given this car's low production numbers and future collectable status, you can expect most Z06's to fetch more than the MSRP. Amazingly, with a combined EPA average of 20.5 miles per gallon the new Z06 is the only car in its class to avoid the costly gas guzzler tax. To get an idea of what the Z06 is selling for, be sure to check out the Fair Purchase Price, which provides the typical transaction price being paid in your area. We project the Z06 will retain a high residual value over a five-year period, besting the values of the Porsche 911 Carrera and equaling those of the standard Corvette.

Chevrolet Corvette Overview and History

Chevrolet is the auto equivalent of a gene-boosted steroid-pumped feline. The ferocious cat was groomed by Swiss born racing driver Louis Chevrolet and business whiz Buick resurrector and former GM head William Durant, as a joint venture that started in 1910. Shortly after Durant was forced out of GM, he partnered with Chevrolet, whom he had previously employed at his Buick racing team, to regain the popularity he had lost.

The Chevy headquarters was set in Detroit and the newly formed brand was baptized, receiving its famous “bowtie” logo in 1913. There are several hypotheses as to how the logo design came to be, two of them being the closest to unanimous acceptance. One of the theories hints at the logo having been designed after a poster Durant had seen in a French hotel while the second claims the “bowtie” is actually a stylized representation of the Swiss flag cross.

No matter how it originated, the golden Chevy logo persisted. In fact, the brand grew at such a fast pace that it allowed Durant to regain ownership of GM in 1916. After having become wealthy enough, Durant bought a smashing 54.5 percent of GM's shares, reinstating himself as head of the auto empire.

Soon after the takeover, Chevrolet was absorbed into GM, becoming a separate division. Having gained even more strength after the merger, the newly formed entity was quick in starting off production and launched the model D in 1918. The V8 35 hp engines fitted on these cars were replaced by smaller 6 cylinder ones, that proved particularly successful on commercial vehicles. The engine gained reputation due to its high durability and earned the “cast iron wonder” nickname.

Only a few years later, Chevy revealed the SUV in its archaic form: the Suburban Carryall. Sporting rough terrain riding capabilities, seating for 8 and weighing around 1½ tons, it marked the beginning of Chevy's future SUV line-up.

The American producer continued its successful innovations streak by introducing the Powerglide transmission in 1950, becoming the first low-price competitor to equip its vehicles with automatic shifting. Shortly after the introduction of the fully automatic transmission, the legendary Corvette was born.

The Vette had such a good reception that it remained the longest running Chevy model in the brand's history, having also been the first American sports car to enter mass production. The Vette also premiered the usage of lightweight construction materials for the car's body, like plastic, at that time.

Following the acclaim garnered by the Vette's release, Chevy launched several other models, including the flashy Impala and the short lived air-cooled Corvair. During the 60's, Chevy reached its sales peak with 3 cars out of any 10 sold in the US. However, before such a performance was achieved, Chevy designed a new small-block V8 engine used to equip its '55 truck range.

This particular engine made it till today, going through plenty of modifications in the process ranging from lightweight, durable aluminum construction to ECU managed control and modern fuel injection for better dosage and increased power.

Although Chevy has been registering lower sales in the past few years due to uncontrolled brand extension, some of the “bowtie” emblazoned automobiles have become either cult classics or vintage collectibles, four wheeled icons as reminders of a past age of glory.

2007 Chevrolet Corvette Consumer Reviews

Bad to the bone
This is the 23rd Corvette I have owned. I did not trade my Red 2002 Z06 as it only has 6000 miles on it since I bought it new. I like the old hardtop style and I wish the 2007 had the same roofline as the '02. The '07 is way smoother to drive and does not show any kind of raw power until you want it to. I have never had a Corvette like this one. A real sleeper. My wife would never know what it was capable of. It is a pure rocket ship, but much more predictable than the '02, which is a 'twitchy' ride. The new one is so different it's hard to describe. Awesome sound system and navigation system. Rides and steers like it's on railroad tracks and stops instantly. The raw pulling power is brutal!

Traded UP
Owned a 1993 Corvette and I really liked it. The ride was a little harsh but it was fun to drive. I never liked the style after 1996. When the C6 cam out I went to look at them and I liked the style and the horsepower. The interior was better, with better design. After 2 years of research I decided to buy my 2007 Corvette. I glad that I did. After owning it 5 months, I feel that I can say that the ride is smooth, its like driving a regular car. The only options that I order were the chrome wheels,3LT,automatic trans and monterey red. If you really enjoy a well built and fast sports car this is it. Make sure you take it for a test ride before purchasing. ,

Z06 earned my respect
I was not until recently a big Corvette fan. But I have changed my mind after owning the Z06 for the last month. It is the fastest car I have ever driven, even faster than the Lamborghini Gallardo ($ 200g's) a friend brought by to compare to the Z06. The handling is superb and for normal driving it is very comfortable. Everything about the car says quality. Large multi-piston brakes, advanced electronic traction control, design and attention to detail. The Goodyear Eagle Runflats stick to the road like they are part of it. The gearbox seems a little heavy but I haven't missed a shift and the throw is short and fast. I have never had a car that attracts so much attention. A great car.

America has arrived
I was never a Corvette fan, until the arrival of the C6. The new covered head lights, and smaller cleaner looks caught my eye, along with a more reasonable price tag than other cars I was considering. I could not be more happy with this car. It rides better than my friend's Carrera S at half the price. The engine pulls from a 1000 rpm's in any gear. Phenomenol braking and superb handling, and it looks right at home next to Gallardos and F430s. The overall fun for the money factor of this car is unequaled. America has arrived at the party. This vehicle is finally a world class competitor in the sports car arena.

"Love This Car"
It is soon to be 14 years old and I haven't had one mechanecal issue out of it. I take great pride in keeping it clean and waxed. People tell me it looks new! The upgraded interior is much better than before and the styling is the best yet (prior to the new C7's). Amazing resale value for a car this old.

I have owned and still have a 2009 Kia amanti it is now 2024 I have 51000 miles on this car excellent handling in all weather except ice and deep snow very fast in traffic I think the handling is tight and responsive. My spouse has driven this on the interstate frequently and the first thing he did was get it up to 220 mph at this speed is floaty but under 80 mph just a pleasure to drive *****
