Regardless of how many doors the RX-8 has, it is ultimately a sports coupe. We applaud Mazda's return to building affordable, non-conformist performance cars.

Sports cars are fast and fun. Truth be told, they're also usually a purely selfish indulgence. Their powerful engines are often gas-guzzlers, less than friendly to the environment. And they're typically two-seaters, making them of little use to friends and/or family who may be longing to come along for the ride. Mazda has created a kinder, more generous sort of sports car. The Concept RX-8, the company's thinly veiled future flagship vehicle, seats four and boasts an engine that's both powerful and fuel-efficient.

Powering the RX-8 is a 1.3-liter 250-horsepower rotary engine. Mazda has had 40 years of experience producing rotaries and is the only manufacturer in the world that offers a pure rotational internal combustion engine. The RX-8's engine -- dubbed the Renesis -- is a new type of rotary, similar to the one that was offered in Mazda's RX-7 (last sold here in 1995), but with a few significant improvements. It makes almost as much power as the RX-7's turbocharged engine (with power levels up to 250 horsepower at 8,500 rpm), but is 30 percent lighter and more compact. Unlike previous rotaries, which used side exhaust ports and peripheral intake ports, the naturally aspirated Renesis has intake and exhaust ports in the side housings; this configuration eliminates overlap between the opening of the intake and exhaust ports, improving combustion efficiency and permitting the engine enhanced fuel economy and reduced emissions. And compared to the RX-7's rotary, the engine's intake ports open sooner, and its exhaust ports open later, resulting in a longer power stroke and improved heat efficiency. Backing the Renesis is a six-speed automanual transmission.

The fact that the Renesis is not as tall as other rotaries brings with it significant advantages when it comes to the RX-8's overall layout. At about the same height as the transmission, the engine's bantam stature allows it to be mounted near the center of the body -- 60 millimeters closer to the center than in an RX-7 -- helping the car to achieve 50/50 front/rear weight distribution. Additionally, its compactness plays a part in enabling the RX-8 to offer sedan-size cabin space without compromising its low-slung sports-car lines. "The use of a compact rotary engine allows for the low hood, short overhangs and overall sports car look, while providing interior room on par with a sport sedan," says Kei Kado, Mazda's senior managing director in charge of R&D and Quality Assurance. The engine's weight, size, low center of gravity and positioning also work to enhance the car's maneuverability and performance.

Scrutinize the RX-8's doors, and you'll see that the car offers something new in this area, as well. The sedan boasts an unusual freestyle door system, with no center pillar; doors are front- and rear-hinged, making rear-seat ingress and egress faster and easier.

The RX-8 features a double-wishbone suspension at all four corners. The upper and lower arms in both the front and rear are considerably longer than those on the RX-7, allowing for consistent grip regardless of changes in roll and camber, and providing a smooth roll center and top-notch cornering performance. Additionally, the car's rear suspension springs are positioned lower than usual, giving the car more trunk space than your typical sports car.

Buyers deserve the opportunity to own the ingenious RX-8, and Mazda seems determined to make this concept car a reality. "With its four-door freestyle door system, four-passenger comfort and Renesis rotary engine, the Mazda RX-8 is the next big thing in sports cars," says Mazda President Mark Fields. "I wouldn't be surprised if you see this car -- or something very close -- on some of the world's most scenic, fun-to-drive highways in the not-so-distant future."

Mazda RX-8 Overview and History

Mazda launched the first generation of the RX-8 in 2003, production spanning for five years until 2008.
Born as the Toyo Cork Kogyo Co. in 1920, Mazda started out as a machine-tool manufacturing plant but quickly turned to making vehicles. The first Mazda car, called the Mazda-Go, a three-wheeled truck appeared in 1931, which a year later began exporting to China. This was the only car that was in production until the Second World War broke out when Mazda factories began making rifles.

After the war, part of the Mazda plant served as the Hiroshima prefecture for a short while. Production and export resumed in 1949 with the same 3-wheeled truck. The first 4-wheel truck was the Mazda Romper, introduced in 1958.

The first pasenger car came in 1960, the Mazda R360 Coupe. Mazda's first partnership with a foreign company was the one in 1961 with NSU/Wankel with which it produced and developed rotary engines. This was done in order to differentiate Mazda from the other Japanese companies. To this day, Mazda is the only manufacturer of Wankel rotary engines as the other companies (NSU and Citroen) gave up on the design sometime during the 70s.

Mazda's paid off because its models quickly gained a name as being powerful yet light vehicles. The most successful series for Mazda were going to be the R100 and the RX models which eventually led to the company's development.

Starting with 1970 Mazda began eyeing the biggest market for its cars, the United States. It opened up a North American branch under the name Mazda North American Operations and it proved to have the winning recipe. In fact, Mazda models were so successful that the company even produced a pick up truck based on the rotary engine.

With 1973 and the oil crisis, the thirsty rotary engines that Mazda used caused a drop in sales but the Japanese company hadn't really given up on piston engines so it was able to use a 4 cylinder model on its cars. The smaller Familia series and Capella were born.

But Mazda wasn't about to give up on its sporty cars and it decided to develop a parallel plant that would produce cars outside the mainstream. In 1978, they came up with the very sporty RX7 and later with the RX8. The piston engine also showed up on Mazda's line up with the MX-5 or Miata.

In 1979 Ford Motor Company became an investor in Mazda with a 27% share after the financial decline of the company. Later on, in the 80s, Ford acquired 20% more of the company after a few joint ventures like using the Familia series platform for the Laser and Escort models as well as building the new Probe and the Mazda plant in Flat Rock, Michigan.

The 90s started off with another joint venture with Ford on the 1991 Explorer which turned out to be a bad investment for the Japanese while the Americans reaped all the benefits. Following its fascination with alternative engine designs, Mazda started developing the Miller cycle engine in 1995.

The latter part of the 90s proved to be not so profitable for the Japanese as the financial crisis hit in 1997, during which Ford acquired 39.9% of the company. From that point on, the collaboration between the two marques intensified, sharing engine design and even some platforms (Ford Escape with Mazda Tribute and the new generation Ford Focus with the Mazda Axela).

For the future, Mazda intends to maintain its forward thinking and experimental technology, by developing a hydrogen-powered car. The prototype has so far reached a 200 kilometers autonomy.

2004 Mazda RX-8 Consumer Reviews

Some people will never be happy. I am!
I have no complaints from this vehicle. As a former RX-7 owner I knew what to expect from the rotary. The 8 is not the replacement for the 7. It is a sports car, but remains "civilized". I have had a single problem with the exhaust, which was covered under warranty. I expected a few issues being the first year of production and bringing the rotary back after 8-9 years. If you are whinny and do not like to pay attention to your vehicle, buy a Honda. This is a car for people who love cars, not for people who are easily inconvenienced. Check the oil, let it warm up, don't drive a rear wheel drive sports car in snow, 9k RPMs will use gas. Common sense stuff that seems to annoy people.

Fair review for the last Rotary
The RX8 is a true 4 door 4 seat sports cars, what it lacks in low end torque it makes up for in handling. Rotary motor propels the 3100lb RX8 to 60 in 6.0 sec. and a ¼ mile in 14.9. Fuel consumption for the RX8 was Avg for when it first came out, 17city/24 Hwy. The cars light weight stiff chassis and electronic steering makes this a point and drive sports car allowing even the novice of sports car owners the ability to get behind the wheel and take the turns like a pro. This car does come at a price requiring you to add oil about ever 4 fill up’s. This is a good daily driver for hwy only commuters

Best College Car/Roadtrip Car/ Daily Commute Car
Before you buy a used car, its your responsibility to check every single possible indicators that will say your car is a lemon. I'm the 6th owner of my rx8 with 132000 miles on it. And since day 1 I got it till today, it only went to the mechanic ONCE during my last roadtrip to Maine from Ohio because I forgot to change the ignition coils. After changing it for 30 minutes at the mechanic, I was back on my road to Maine. My car never got towed during my ownership ever before, even when the 2 coils were cracked that time it could still run (like not more than 30 mph of course) and I could still drive it to the workshop. Owning it was hard work (especially maintenance) but once you get to know what your rx8 needs, it will be easy. My routine every single time before I shut the engine off was redlining for couple of seconds and maintain it to 4k rpm, then shut it off just to preserve the engine from flooding. And because of this, my car is still running very well. The only problem I had with this car is the cost of maintenance. It burns a hole in my pocket so I had to learn DIYs to survive college. I saved almost $ 2000 on repairs and maintenance costs at the mechanic just from learning things online (changing ignition coils, plug wires, spark plugs, heater console problem, and even deflooding procedure) and I got it from rx8 forums and google. So if you're saying it is a bad car well you are wrong. Rotary could actually be reliable and last till 250k miles in my opinion. To those who had a lot of issues with it in my opinion are just either unlucky who got lemons OR are just a bunch of ignorants who treat rotary cars the same as other cars. Before you buy any used rx8, read up the rx8 forums they have a guide on buying used rx8s out there. It does have its pros and cons but I love my rx8. I traveled the whole east coast and southern parts with it and had no major issue other than the Maine trip. I just wish I could have manual version though. Pro tip of choosing an RX8: Choose a used rx8 with great maintenance record. And STOCK too. Never buy a car with check engine light on unless you know what are the codes are (I had CEL lights on when I first bought my rx8 but it was just telling me the secondary pump injector was faulty) so I knew it won't affect my engine so I bought it anyways.

BAD REVIEWS GIVEN BY CLUELESS PEOPLE
The rotary is an amazing engine but different from regular piston engines & should be treated w/ that in mind. Many of these bad reviews stem from individuals who havent researched or properly cared for it. There are a few minor issues & if you RESEARCH it you will easily find ways to avoid those- not to mention 10 yr/100k mi warranty on the engine core components is a nice bonus should it be necessary. A rotary engine needs time to warm up. Turning the engine off while its still cold will flood it. There are reviews of people complaining about this but you can easily avoid it by letting it run for a minute or 2 Thanks to researching the RX8 first, I've never had an issue.

"Still love this car."
This car gets a bad reputation, because of its rotary engine. People dont read the manual and take care of it for what it is. It needs premium gas, it needs good oil, and it burns that oil do you need to check it and top it off OFTEN. Thats just part of the deal when you buy one. I bought mine used with just under 60k on it. (Original Engine, never replaced). That was low milage at the time, heck its 13 years old now so its still under the average. I have put 50k on it in about 4 years. It has never mechanically stranded me. The only maintenance Ive had to do in the last 50k miles are a battery, a set of brakes, a set of plugs and wires, and a set of tires. I put a clutch in it at 90k and it really didnt need it. I have flooded it twice (moved it in the driveway and didnt let it warm up enough), but I was able to get it started w/o having to pull plugs. The car is bone stock, no add on, no enhancements. It runs as good as the day I bought it. While it has the grand touring package, this isnt really a great highway touring car. Its a bit noisy, and while its comfortable for a while, its not something you probably want to spend hours in. It performs well, goes where you point it. Not a very good winter car, and Ive driven it in all kinds of winter conditions that it probably shouldnt have been driven in. Id buy a new RX9 in a minute.

"just the truth"
car gets flooded all the time, need to know the tricks to get it going when it happen or it will give a nasty hard time and it will cost u a lot of money since it dies anytime anywhere. I was ok dealing with it, I know and like working on cars but enough is enough, and not everybody have mechanical inclination. The look is eye candy, what u guys call fast is not that fast and the after the 4th gear the torque is gone. 1st time sport car w/o any problems , yes u will like it, experience man with street fast car who expect a reliable behavior after a beat up on high power on the engine... u will hate it, it does not have a long lifeRead less

"2010 Mazda RX-8 - pure freakin fun"
OK. been rotary since 1981. 12As. 13Bs, Fuel injected, Sequential twin turbo, and whatever. Now a RX-8 Series II. Its not the fastest - HP wise...like somewhere around 240 ponies. But. As far as a FUN darn car ----with high rev's and incredible driver feedback - you will not find much better. Especially at this price point. Drive a 2009-2011 model year. You will be Impressed.
