The 2001 Porsche 911 is a great sports car that deserves more of a stylistic difference from its less costly sibling, the Boxster.

The Porsche 911 continues to be one of the world's top sports cars. Porsche has the uncanny ability to build a car that has stunning performance (zero-60 in under 4 seconds for Turbo models), legendary mystique (what 13-year-old boy doesn't dream of owning a 911?) and real-world functionality (a useable interior and optional all-wheel drive).

Back in 1999, the 911 underwent its first "clean-sheet" redesign since its introduction in 1965. Longer, wider and sleeker than any previous 911, the newest version nevertheless maintains the unmistakable 911 profile and classic styling cues. There are currently five models: the Carrera Coupe and Carrera Cabriolet, the all-wheel-drive Carrera 4 Coupe and Carrera 4 Cabriolet, and the new-for-2001 911 Turbo.

Like all previous 911s, the current models feature a rear-mounted, horizontally- opposed six-cylinder engine. Serious Porsche enthusiasts cried foul when Porsche announced the engine would be water-cooled rather than air-cooled. But it's hard to argue with the results. The all-aluminum 3.4-liter engine generates 300 horsepower and 258 foot-pounds of torque. In the Turbo model the engine grows to 3.6-liters, features twin turbochargers, and generates 415 horsepower and 413 foot-pounds of torque.

Porsche offers the choice of either a six-speed manual or a five-speed Tiptronic S automatic transmission on all models, including the Turbo (this is the first time an automatic has been available on the 911 Turbo since that model was introduced in 1974). The Tiptronic S allows drivers the option to manually select transmission gears via steering wheel-mounted thumb switches. The Tiptronic's manual mode can be activated by using the thumb switches, even if the shift lever is in the "D" position.

To keep the chassis under control, Porsche's 911 gets an independent suspension that uses an optimizedMacPherson strut design in front and a multilink setup in the rear. The standard 17-inch wheels come with205/50ZR17 tires in front and 255/40ZR17 tires in back. An optional 18-inch wheel/tire package (standard on Turbo models) enhances both looks and performance.

For ultimate traction, there's the all-wheel-drive system found on Carrera 4 and Turbo models. This system can direct torque to the front wheels at a rate of 5 to-40 percent, depending on available traction and power applied. Carrera 4s and Turbo's also receive Porsche Stability Management system (PSM) as standard equipment (optional on Carreras).

In the 911 coupes, the rear seatbacks fold down to create a flat cargo floor. The one-touch power soft top on the Cabriolet models folds compactly in a compartment behind the rear seats. A standard hardtop cover fits flush against the body with the roof lowered.

What's not to like? Well, the 911 has the unfortunate problem of sharing very similar front-end looks with its smaller brother, the Boxster. For a $ 15,000 premium, it'd be nice not to be confused with a lesser car. And with MSRPs ranging from the mid 60's to $ 120,000, the Porsche heritage still includes sapping a big bundle of cash out of your wallet.

Porsche 911 Overview and History

Who hasn't heard of Porsche? In 2006 it won the most prestigious automobile brand for over 70 years of excellence and dedication to the four-wheel god. Established at first as a consulting and development company by Dr. Ing. Ferdinand Porsche in 1931, Porsche SE has since become synonymous with luxurious sports cars as well as cutting edge technology.

Situated in downtown Stuttgart, Porsche's first contract of developing a people's car, a Volkswagen, appointed by the German government. The result was one of the most famous cars in history, one of the best sold and one of the most easily recognizable out there, the Beetle. Many features of the Beetle would find their place on the first ever Porsche, the 64, developed in 1939.

During WWII the Porsche factory turned to making vehicles for the German Army, such as the Kubelwagen and the Schwimmwagen as well as contributing to the production of Tiger and Elefant tanks. After the war Ferdinand was imprisoned for war crimes for 20 months and was during that time that his son, Ferry Porsche, decided to build a new car to suit his needs – the 356.

The success of the 356 and the death of Ferdinand Porsche in 1951 gave Ferry the confidence to follow in his father's footsteps and continue designing cars. One of his most famous designs was the Spyder 550, a car that would prove very successful in races.

By now, the general line of the company seemed evident, as in 1964 another sporty model, the 911, another car with a air-cooled, boxer, rear-mounted engine. The design team for this car was led by Ferry's oldest son, Ferdinand Alexander Porsche. this car would take the legacy of the 550 Spyder even further, winning races and rallies. Testimony to the success of the 911 is the fact that it's still in production today, despite being heavily modified.

Porsche was going to change its status in 1972 from a limited partnership to a public limited company, which meant that now Porsche would be run by a board of directors supervised by family members. In 1974, at the Paris Auto Show, Porsche unveils the new 911 Turbo, with exhaust turbocharger and pressure regulator.

When the 924 was entered in production in 1975, Porsche took a leap of faith because it had not experienced with front-mounted engines for a long time. By Porsche standards, the 928 was an oddity, with its front-mounted V8 engine made out of  metal alloy. Then, in 1981, a new transaxle model is added to the Porsche line-up, the 944. The high-performance Porsche 959 is unveiled at the Frankfurt Auto Show in 1985. It will go on to win a lot of races and rallies, the best known  being the Paris-Dakar.

A new technological leap was made in 1988 when the 911 Carrera 4 with all-wheel drive was introduced on the market. Then, in 1989, the “Tiptronic” automatic gearbox system is fitted on Porsches. In 1991, Porsche becomes the first car manufacturer to fit driver and passenger airbags on all its models.

The Boxter model is introduced in 1996 after 3 and a half years of development. That same year, Porsche celebrates 1million units being produced. Two years later, Ferry Porsche dies at the age of 88 but the company moves on and has a great season at Le Mans with the 911 GT1, coming in first and second. This was going to be only the beginning for Porsche, which continued with the very sporty and high-performance models Boxster S and the Carrera GT in 2000.

In 2002 Porsche entered the SUV market with the unconventional Cayenne and its later versions, the Cayenne Turbo and Turbo S. The next model on the line-up for Porsche, announced for 2009 is the Panamera, a four-door sedan. With this new model, Porsche seems set to take on a whole new market, directly competing with other luxury brands such as Mercedes, BMW and Audi.

Best Car I have ever owned
We have a small car collection (including an Audi R8 and Audi RS6), the Porsche is not the quickest in the group but it is the most reliable. Its a C4 with the sports package. The C4 corners better than either Audi and there is nothing to compare to the freeing feeling of driving the Porsche with the top down! I have replaced the sound system and added navigation and a radar detector. The car now has 60k mi on it and I have not had one mechanical problem. The battery had to be replaced once and general maintenance that's it! The Audis have had numerous problems and they are both years younger. You cannot beat the elegance, classic style, performance, and reliability of this piece of art!

Male Menopause Black on Black Self Gift
It's the most unreasonable, justifiable smile producing gift any man should indulge in. The Carrera is a tight fit, smooth growl and fun-to-drive, eye brow twitcher racer. Don't second guess yourself-just buy it and you will be rewarded. There is a little burn smell after a hard drive but it seems to be normal.

Turbo AWD 2dr Coupe (3.6L 6cyl Turbo 6M)
There is a reason this is such an automotive Icon!
So here's the deal, this is my only car and I daily drive it year round in Toronto. It had 118,000km on it when I bought it and two years later I've put on another 50,000km. Its fast, sexy, comfortable, built to last a lifetime, quite practice and oh so much fun! We've take it on long road trips, to the cottage, to get groceries, fishing... you get the idea. With just an engine chip and a few little things it runs 11.7 @ 120 MPH in the 1/4 mile... plus when the snow flies the AWD makes it I've owned a lot of nice cars and I'm convinced this is automotive perfection. Timeless design and these things are only going to be going up in value - just look at the 911 Turbo's of the past.

Just a solid sportscar
Truly a wonderful daily driver, though we don't put more than 4,000 average miles per year. Keep it on Porsche battery tender and battery stays fresh between weekend drives. Absolute symphony to the ears every time you open her up. Great exhaust notes and engine revs that make you say, "More please!". Great handling, classic style, and heritage galore all wrapped up in a pretty Arctic Silver Metallic package!

"Buy one while you still can"
Hard to describe the insane value of the 996 TT. Very hard to resist driving it daily, walks the line of old meets new Porsche. In the end the one thing Porsche purest hate most (headlights, water cooled etc.) will be what separates it from the rest. Mezger engine with 6 speed manual and racing pedigree? Cmon, better get one before all the good example of them are gone.

"Phenomenal for the money."
I can hardly believe the value on these cars. It runs like a dream. I own 10 classic cars and 3 more later model cars this included. 2000 Carrera 4 is my daily driver. Incredibly dependable. I heard others say they are good cars but this thing is like bulletproof. I've had it 3 years now. I had to do some minor work on a small oil leak under hood which was quickly solved. I love that it has passed smog 2 times no sweat. Quicker then my muscle cars by a lot and much better handling. I don't understand why the resale is so weak on these it is a well kept secret as far as I can say for money spent.

"Always a Thrilling Driving Experience"
I've owned the 911 TT for four years now. Every time I drive that car my impressions of the overall engineering escalate. It's a bit noisy and feels every inch of the road but who cares once you feel and see that incredible driving experience. The power, the handling, the Bose sound system, the curb appeal (and yes I like the looks of the Turbo 996) all in a 19 year old car at an incredible price. Look at the price of the new Turbos and compare. I will keep this car forever... and I will never loose a penny on this one.
