Subaru Loyale Overview and History
Subaru actually means “unite” and it refers to the six stars on the logo that stand for the 6 companies that are united under the FHI group. The largest of the stars represents Fuji Heavy Industries. The company started out in 1917 in Japan as a aircraft research laboratory but soon moved to producing airplanes.
After WWII, the company created a scooter, the Fuji Rabbit with the spare parts from airplanes. Pretty soon, the company split up into different business that manufactured scooters, coaches, engines and chassis. Then CEO Kenji Kita decided that it would be a good idea to get involved in car making and pretty soon the first Subaru car was created, the Subaru 1500 (1954).
The 1500 or P1 was followed by the 360 in 1958, the Sambar in 1961, the 1000 in 1965, gthe 1100 and the R2 in 1969. During the 70s, the Leone came out and then later, in the 80s, the Alcyclone (1985) and the Legacy (1989) were added to the Subaru line-up.
Slowly, in the 90s, the company moved away from the manufacture of small vehicles and concentrated on rally cars, such as the Vivio and Impreza. Different versions of the Impreza WRX won the world championship several times under drivers such as Colin McRae.
Using the technology from the aeronautical industry, Subaru employed many successful inventions in the automotive industry. One of the first was the us of horizontally opposed “boxer” engines as well as the use of monocoque construction. Also, Subaru is the only car manufacturer to offer all-wheel drive as a standard on most of its models. The Japanese manufacturer was also the first to introduce electronic continuously variable transmission (ECTV) which replaces standard gears and gives smooth acceleration while reducing emissions and fuel consumption.
Subaru also takes a keen interest in environmental protection, having achieved an odd record: 0 landfill status for their plant in Lafayette, Indiana which means that the factory generates no trash. Also, the company has an extensive recycling program for its own cars, not to mention the program for hybrid and fuel efficient cars.

Reliable, Practical, Economical
This is the most reliable, economical
and practical wagon I have owned. It
is now 10 years old and I have to part
with it since I just bought a Subaru
Forester. The only fault with this
vehicle has been that it rusted very
badly. Mechanically it could not be
killed, but the body just rotted away.

my first car
it was very reliable. I bought it at 7 yrs and 109k miles and sold it at 14 years and 150K miles.
The only problems I had were oil leaks which lead to frequent CV boot and CV joint replacements.
In the last year or so, it started having an overheating problem. Did a tune up of some kind which improved the condition. I regretted selling it.... since my 2000 Legacy lost the engine and the headgaskets that same day.

the best car ever!
The best car ever! I had is car for 3 years and it had 446,000 miles, and it finally died. It could go through just about anything. I highly recommend this car.

1993 Subaru Loyale 4dr auto.
traded in a 1989 Corsica for this, was a very good
trade overall ... had it for 11 years, my sibling
had it for another 4 ... Good interior design, very roomy for such a small car.
Gas mileage was ok, about 26 mpg overall.
Traction in winter was ok considering it did not have 4wd, though the 13" wheels could not go into deep heavy snow.
Watch out for the three-part cat. converter, is
expensive to replace.
Watch out for oil leaks though is not really an
issue.
watch out for auto-trans., it did not like to
shift back to 1st upon stopping without help
from the shift lever.
watch for rust on left rear fender though it
does progress slowly

1994 Subaru Loyale
"Perfect First Car."
I bought my '94 Loyale in 2011 with 133,000 miles on it, for only $ 750. Aside from being a little dirty and faded, it had no real problems. Very simple styling, but once I got it all cleaned and detailed, it looked great. It was fun to drive, rode surprisingly smooth, and was very comfortable. The factory stereo wasn't the best, but I replaced the stereo and speakers for under $ 200. I also replaced the rear shocks and tires while I had it. The only problems I ever had were an issue with the heater, which just turned out to be a bad control panel, and an overheating problem, which was because the previous owner had propped the thermostat open. I sold it because it had a leak in one head gasket, and I didn't have the money to get it fixed. Overall I enjoyed having it, and easily got more than my money's worth.

"nearly a million miles and will not quit"
i bought this car in 2007 with 800,000 miles on it for 400 dollars and i was expecting it to last a few months but this little blocky beater has 910,256miles on it now and with out a second thought still makes takes me every where i ask it to. its fun to drive cool little car i get about 29mpg average....i will keep this car forever....reliablity is king

"Not Bad"
I bought this car for $ 500. Not bad for a 500 dollar car. It has confortable seats and you dont have to worry about getting it dirty. The only problem is that it is poorly built. The carpet in the trunk fell out about three weeks ago. It is not that nice to look at either, but no cars from 1992 are anyway. It stalls a lot, but always starts up in the morning. It gets great MPG. It is an AWD, and doesn't do that bad on the ice and snow if you put studded tires on it. Overall i would give this car a 6.5.
