Cadillac's history can be traced back to the beginning of the 18th century. Although coaches, horse riding or walking were the favorite means of locomotion during those times and no cars had been yet made, it's important to trace the brand to its origins. The genesis of Cadillac as it is widely known today began in 1701, when a group of French explorers led by Le Sieur Antoine de la Mothe Cadillac traveled to the northern parts of the US and established Ville d'Etroit. The settling would ultimately come to be known as Detroit, a flourishing industrial city, teeming with car plants and foundries.
However, Sir Cadillac would not have any connection to the future of the Cadillac car workshops. Its actual beginnings can be traced to the mid 19th century, when a boy named Henry Martyn Leland was born. Leland grew up on a farm near Barton, Vermont, where he received a solid working-education that taught him the importance of doing a job properly, regardless of its importance.
The farm-training he received, combined with his penchant for improving working methods, led to his growth as an engineer. However, Cadillac would not yet emerge as an automobile brand. By 1890, Leland had founded his own company in partnership with Robert C. Faulconer and Norton, after having convinced the former of the city's need for machine shops. The company's area of expertise was gear grinding and the development of special tools.
Soon after the company received general credit for the quality of the products it marketed and Leland had asserted himself as a talented engineer, the shift from steam-powered vehicles to gasoline-powered ones was made. Following the work of the visionary Daimler and Benz in Europe, a man named Ransom Eli Olds from Michigan teamed up with a group of investors under a firm called Olds Gasoline Engine Works. Their main objective was to build a gasoline-powered engine to be fitted on the chassis of a vehicle.
The project was a success but the resulting product was flawed: the gears in the transmission were too loud. Olds turned to Leland and Faulconer for help. The two entered a straight competition against the Dodge brothers who were also supplying engines for Olds. Although Leland's ultimately developed 10.25 Hp engine was better than that of Dodge, Olds turned it down due to the high car sales his company registered at the time. Basically, there was no need for a new engine.
Still, Leland's engine would soon come to use. Shortly after Olds' refusal of using the newly designed engine, Leland was looked up by two men concerning the liquidation of a company that had previously built cars. Its name was the Detroit Automobile Company and had been initially reorganized by Henry Ford, who left shortly after the company began crumbling again. Leland persuaded the investors to stay in business, convincing them of the utility and importance of the automobile industry in the near future.
With an engine already designed, Leland and Faulconer were brought in and the company adopted the name of Cadillac, that of the explorer that had founded the city over two centuries ago. The Cadillac coat of arms was adopted as the company's new logo and the baby-firm would still receive international recognition for its automobiles.
Leland's engines had already garnered appreciation and were some of the most accurately built units of the time. In fact, not only the engines were reliable and built with pinpoint precision, but they were also highly versatile, successfully catering for the need of interchangeability. This feature has earned Cadillac the Dewer Trophy, being the first time when such an award was handed to an American automobile manufacturer.
Later on, Cadillac would be part of a larger entity, the General Motors company, then run by William Crapo Durant - who paid $ 4.5M in cash for Leland's company to merge with GM. From that point on, several models would be developed and enter production by Leland's departure in 1917.
The Brougham, Fleetwood, Deville and the Eldorado are some of the most famous models build by the GM's prodigious branch. Its accomplishments vary from speed breaking records on American territory to engineering improvements that were a premiere for the automotive world. For example, Cadillac introduced the revolutionary electrical lighting and ignition Delco system as standard equipment on their cars, as well as boasting the world's first independent front suspension on its entire line of automobiles in 1934.
Closed cooling systems, electronic injection systems and catalytic converters are also among the long list of first-to-have-done things introduced by Cadillac in the US. Despite the low reception of the brand in Europe, Cadillac remains one of the great classics overseas, still boasting a privileged status among American car producers. After all, it's a brand deeply rooted in nobility grounds.

Great car
Bought this car with 76k and its now up to 88k fuel economy is more forgiving than other cars if you drive it right was able to get 38Mpg on round trip from Quincy, IL to Springfield, IL, beautiful flawless metallic high gloss maroon with matching leather, great sound from digital tune radio 7 band EQ and tape, amazing power if anyone is thinking of buying a used mustang lets have a little competition to see which is faster and more comfortable. Supernatural
When people ask how this car has treated me, I tell them that this car is special; it can do anything. Super comfortable inside, exceptional under the hood, beautiful on the outside. It has so much power, and being so low to the ground makes it seem like a sports car. In terms of reliability, this car is a great example of American quality. I bought it with 97K miles on it and put 15K the first year with no problems. Only one repair ever (water pump pulley), which apparently was done incorrectly the first time. The mileage isn't great, but can vary widely. I got up to 35 mpg on a trip to Vegas. I intend to drive this car until there's no more miles it can handle. I absolutely love this car.

Very easy to live with
Cadillac introduced an all-new front-drive Deville for 1985. The car received an extensive update for 1989, and another mild facelift in 1991. The 1993 model was the last year before the 1994 re-design. Acceleration is remarkable for a large front-drive vehicle, and the interior room is hard to beat. Drivers of all sizes should be able to find a way to get comfortable. The overall design has held up very well, and the '91 - '93 Deville still looks contemporary today. Composite front fenders have found themselves to be prone to cracking, and rust through on the A-pillar (particularly at the front-door hinges) is something to look for. Because of a long model run, used parts are plentiful.

Wow, what a car !!
I have owned my Cadillac Sedan de Ville for 14+ years and consider it the finest car I have ever owned. I have never had to perform anything but normal maintenance on this beautiful vehicle, have taken many major road trips in it in utmost comfort and safety, and enjoy it every day for normal in-town driving around Los Angeles. Always a pleasure to enter, its tasteful interior gives my passengers a sense of spacious comfort unmatched in any other car. I love this car today just as much as I did when I drove it out of Casa de Cadillac in 1994. Faithful oil changes, brake service, align, etc. and keep it forever! After 157K miles, still Five Star !

1992 Cadillac DeVille
"Great road car"
I bought this 1992 Deville with 142k miles in October 2018. Always liked the styling and a test drive sold me. Great performance from the 4.9, smooth shifting and quiet ride. Very roomy. Mileage is the only bummer - get about 18 mpg on the interstate. 4.9 is a great engine - I don't trust the heads on the newer Northstars. Ergonomics are a little dated - hard to reach the stereo, crude cupholders, dash lacks gauges and good illumination - but the car is from early 90s. All in all I really like this lead sled.

1992 Cadillac DeVille
"Very Stylish and Reliable Car!"
I absolutely love this car! I am friends with the people who bought this car brand new in November of 1992 and they had it for about 8 years and then they sold it to me in 2000 when they got a new Cadillac. They had all of the routine maintenance done on this car and loved it, but they decided it was time to upgrade, so I have had this car since July of 2000. This is one of the best cars that Cadillac has ever made. The quality is outstanding and cannot be beat. I still have all of the original interior besides the radio. I even still have the cup holders! The radio died in about 2002, which I was not happy about because it was a top of the line Delco/Bose Gold Series System, but it was ten years old. The ride is very smooth and people that drive this car always comment that it feels like you are floating because the shocks and suspension are so good. In October 2015 I hit a deer with this car and at the time only had liability insurance, so I had to pay for it out of pocket. The great things was that the only thing that was damaged was the hood, that's it! None of the radiator or steering got messed up at all. These old Cadillacs are like tanks and are rock solid. I got a new hood for this car and painted it with the original paint code from the VIN and after it was done, you could not tell anything had happened! It is also a very roomy car, with seating for up to 6 people. I have never had any trouble with the engine or transmission going out. The rearview mirror has fallen off a couple times, but I have fixed it. The same thing has happened to some of the emblems on the back of the car, but gorilla glue fixed that problem! Overall, this car is one of the best that I have ever owned and I don't plan on getting rid of it anytime soon.

1993 Cadillac DeVille
"bought new"
It is a wonderful car and I reviewed it before. The reason I am responding again is so many people have lost the CUP holder that did come with these cars new. It is a black contraption that clips to the front of the armrest ; black in color holds 2 cups. I lost mine a couple of years ago but found a replacement on Amazon. On that note I will once again say We have kept this car for so many years because it is still in near perfect condition. We currently have a 2012 DTS nice but not as stylish and elegant as the old 93 SEDAN DEVILLE. Our 93 also has the extremely rare D'elegance trim package of which less than 300 were made in 93 we are told. .Read less
