Camshaft Position A - Timing Over-Retarded (Bank 2)
P0022 is the OBD-II generic code which indicates that the Engine Control Module (ECM) has determined the intake camshaft timing for bank 2 is more retarded than what the ECM has commanded it be. This over-retarded timing condition could be during the advancing or retarding phase of the camshaft timing.
The Variable Camshaft Timing (VCT) oil control valve (OCV) gets stuck in the open position.
The camshaft phaser is damaged and gets stuck in the retarded position.
There are oil flow problems to the VCT piston and phaser.
The ECM will turn on the Check Engine Light.
The engine starts hard or hesitates on acceleration.
The fuel mileage will decrease and the engine may blow black smoke out of the tailpipe.
The engine will emit excessive fumes and may fail emissions testing.
Note: Drive complaints may change depending on the camshaft timing.
Visually checks the electrical connections to the camshaft sensor
Checks the oil control solenoid valve and crankshaft sensor for loose connections or damaged wiring
Makes sure that the engine oil is clean and full, and that the viscosity is correct
Scans and documents the codes and views freeze frame data to see when the code was set
Performs a manufacturer's specific pinpoint tests for the P0022 code and repairs as directed
Follow these simple guidelines to prevent mistakes:
Fuel mileage will go down and the engine may get carbon buildup on pistons and valves.
The engine may have a hard start, hesitation and stalling problems.
The engine emissions may exceed federal and local limits.
