The 2016 Scion FR-S, with its sleek styling, rear-wheel drive and sharp handling, is one of the most appealing and attainable small performance cars sold today.

The small sport coupe is a small niche in the U.S. car market, but for shoppers who want nimble handling, peppy performance and good looks in a small package -- and can't abide the thought of four doors -- Scion's updated 2016 FR-S remains one of the best choices available. It's a back-to-basics, lightweight sports car with rear-wheel drive, excellent balance and an affordable price.

Driving characteristics are the main draw for the 2016 Scion FR-S (co-developed with Subaru, which offers a twin in the Subaru BRZ). The FR-S nimbly zips around turns, yet it's not intimidating to drive hard like a lot of high-horsepower, rear-drive coupes can be. The FR-S gets pretty respectable gas mileage, too: 28 mpg combined with the six-speed automatic transmission, 25 mpg with the six-speed manual.

While it is quite entertaining to drive, there are some drawbacks with the 2016 FR-S. Its 200-horsepower four-cylinder engine is capable but lacks the low-end oomph that competitors with larger engines can offer. The FR-S can also feel a bit insubstantial in the way it responds to road impacts, and seems noisy during long highway drives. It's not the most practical thing, either. The trunk is relatively small and the rear seats are pretty much useless, even for small children. It's best to think of the FR-S as a functional two-seater.

By offering a two-door body, 2+2 seating layout and sporty, rear-wheel-drive driving dynamics for a relatively low price, Scion plunks the 2016 FR-S into a segment with only a few direct rivals. Chief among them is its twin, the Subaru BRZ, which is nearly identical. If you desire stronger acceleration, the Nissan 370Z is an option, though it can be considerably more expensive. If practicality drives your decision-making, you can have a lot of fun in front-wheel-drive hatchbacks like the Ford Focus ST, Volkswagen GTI and Mini Cooper S. Whatever you compare it to, though, the 2016 Scion FR-S stands out as a stylish and elemental small sports car that gives you a great driving experience. It's definitely worth a look.

The 2016 Scion FR-S sport coupe comes in a single trim level. Standard equipment includes 17-inch alloy wheels, automatic headlights, air-conditioning, full power accessories, a height-adjustable driver seat, a tilt-and-telescoping leather-wrapped steering wheel, cruise control, a rearview camera, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, and an eight-speaker sound system with a 7-inch touchscreen, voice commands, HD radio, Aha radio, an auxiliary audio jack and a USB interface.

Other than exterior color and transmission choices, Scion doesn't offer any factory options for the FR-S. Instead, there's an array of dealer-installed accessories such as foglights, performance parts and a premium BeSpoke sound system with navigation, additional smartphone app integration and Internet radio.

A 2.0-liter horizontally opposed four-cylinder engine generating 200 hp and 151 pound-feet of torque is the only power plant for the 2016 Scion FR-S. You can mate it to either the standard six-speed manual transmission or the optional six-speed automatic with paddle shifters and rev-matched downshifts.

In testing, a manual-equipped 2015 FR-S sprinted from zero to 60 mph in 6.5 seconds -- quick, although not as fast as more powerful but heavier sport coupes. We haven't tested an FR-S with the automatic, but a nearly identical Subaru BRZ equipped with the automatic transmission clocked a slower, 7.9-second 0-60 time.

The six-speed manual 2016 FR-S returns a respectable EPA estimate of 25 mpg combined (22 city/30 highway), while the automatic achieves an impressive 28 mpg combined (25/34).

Standard safety features on the 2016 Scion FR-S include antilock brakes, traction and stability control, front seat side airbags and full-length side curtain airbags. In brake testing, a Scion FR-S came to a stop from 60 mph in 117 feet. That's a respectable distance, but a bit longer than average for a car with summer tires.

In government crash tests, the Scion FR-S received five out of five stars for overall crash protection, with four stars for total frontal crash protection and five stars for total side impact safety. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety awarded it the highest possible rating of "Good" in the moderate-overlap frontal-offset, side-impact, roof-strength and head restraint/seat (whiplash protection) tests. The Scion received the second-highest score of "Acceptable" in the small-overlap frontal-offset test.

The 2016 Scion FR-S is not a car built for sizzling straight-line performance. Its moderately powered 2.0-liter engine revs willingly and lets out a nice snarl at high rpm, but we're still talking about outright acceleration that's no better than that of a modern V6 family sedan.

In Scion's defense, moderation is part of the car's design, anyway. It's light and nimble, so you look for excuses to take it for a spin and drive it a little farther or harder than you need to because it's so entertaining. The FR-S defines what sports car driving is all about.

From a practical standpoint, the FR-S does a decent job in long-distance highway travel. It's not loud, exactly, but it certainly isn't serene at higher cruising speeds. Most drivers will be pleased with the compliant ride quality, but the car's lightweight nature means it can feel somewhat insubstantial compared to bigger and heavier sport coupes.

Scion has made few concessions to style or luxury in the 2016 FR-S cabin. It's an environment that emphasizes driving, punctuated only by a blend of Toyota and Subaru switchgear and materials. The FR-S's cockpit looks a little bare compared with other compact sports cars in its price range, yet it also feels like a genuine back-to-basics driver's car. Touches of silver-tone trim around the previously all-black interior help lighten up the 2016 FR-S a bit.

The FR-S's front seats are comfortable for long-distance trips while providing firm support for hard driving. Drivers of just about any size can find a suitable driving position, and the low-profile hood allows an expansive view of the road ahead. Scion has updated the touchscreen-based audio system this year, so there's probably less of a reason this year to go for the upgraded BeSpoke system unless you really want navigation and smartphone app integration.

In the backseat, legroom is next to nil, heads bob perilously close to the rear glass and the center tunnel impedes hiproom. Trunk space is minuscule at 6.9 cubic feet, although folding down the mostly useless rear seat expands cargo-carrying abilities considerably.

Last year's suspension improvements to the Scion FR-S carry over to this year, and we couldn't be happier. More stable in corners but no less quick or fun around a track, the suspension improvements help improve driver confidence. But make no mistake, this is still a driver's car, and while it's easier for an amateur to have fun, it's still especially rewarding for an experienced driver. Flick the slick-shifting 6-speed manual into gear, keep the engine revving high, and you'll find the 2.0-liter flat-4 provides plenty of thrust. The suspension lost its tail-happy tendencies last year, and while the drift-kids may complain, it makes for an easier-to-drive and quicker car all around. However, Scion’s FR-S sports car is a hassle in town. The stiff suspension is unforgiving over broken pavement, it's pretty loud inside on the highway, and the tight interior is a squeeze for taller drivers.

TOUCH-SCREEN RADIOThe 2016 Scion FR-S comes standard with a touch-screen audio system, and has since its introduction. However, this year it borrows the interface we've been enjoying on many of its Toyota siblings, and it's a huge improvement. We hope that steering-wheel-mounted controls are next on the agenda.TORSEN LIMITED-SLIP DIFFERENTIALSome of the credit for the excellent handling you get in a Scion FR-S must go to the Torsen limited-slip differential. It operates to send power to the rear wheel that needs it most in turns, ensuring extra grip and safe passage through sharp corners.

There's no denying that there's not a huge amount of room inside a 2016 FR-S, but it's only the tallest drivers who would call it cramped. Not only is there good headroom and legroom, but Scion has cleverly carved out space for just about everything you'll want to have with you. The cruise-control and air-conditioning controls are all easy to use, and the new touch-screen audio system is easier to use than its predecessor. The rear seat is mostly decorative, and we suggest just folding it down to augment the meager cargo space in the trunk.

Calling the 2016 Scion FR-S “small” isn't quite right. Instead, it's just really space-efficient, being exactly as big as it needs to be, and no larger. The design is also undeniably cool, with a low-slung stance, wide fenders, sleek headlights, and sporty taillights that look like it doesn't want to stand still for long. But there's nothing overwrought about the styling, no obtuse flares or outsized wings on the trunk, although an active aftermarket can supply those accessories if you're so inclined.

Scion certainly makes buying a 2016 FR-S easy. There's only one well-equipped trim level that includes air conditioning, cruise control, one-touch power windows, power mirrors and door locks. It also comes with 17-inch alloy wheels, Bluetooth and the new touch-screen audio system that includes auxiliary and USB inputs. A 6-speed manual transmission is standard. On the safety front, all FR-S's feature stability control, traction control, six airbags and Smart Stop, a feature that cuts engine power if the brake and throttle pedals are pressed at the same time.

Factory options for the 2016 Scion FR-S sports car are slim. There's a 6-speed automatic transmission that includes steering wheel-mounted paddles for rev-matching downshifts, but seriously, this car deserves a manual transmission. The other factory option is a BeSpoke audio system that includes navigation. Other than that, there are color choices and a host of dealer-installed extras that include 18-inch wheels, upgraded brakes, lowering springs, a rear spoiler and other items.

The 200-horsepower horizontally opposed 4-cylinder engine in the 2016 Scion FR-S is part of the reason this sports coupe feels so nimble. The unusual design puts more weight lower to the ground, reducing body roll and contributing to the flat stance the FR-S has in corners. The engine comes standard with a 6-speed manual transmission, which is the clear choice for enthusiasts looking to wring the most out of the FR-S on track day. However, we'd suggest skipping the TRD short-shift kit, which ruins the feel of gear changes. A 6-speed automatic with paddle shifters is also available, but aside from getting better fuel economy – up to 34 mpg on the highway – we don't think it offers any advantage over the manual.2.0-liter flat-4200 horsepower @ 7,000 rpm151 lb-ft of torque @ 6,400 rpmEPA city/highway fuel economy: 22/30 mpg (manual), 25/34 mpg (automatic)

The Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) for a 2016 Scion FR-S starts at $ 26,100 including the $ 770 destination charge. Add $ 1,200 if you want the BeSpoke audio system. Unless you're really looking to save fuel, we'd recommend skipping the $ 1,100 automatic transmission. That makes the 2016 FR-S pretty competitive against sports-car rivals like the Hyundai Genesis Coupe and the new Mazda MX-5 Miata. However, you'll spend less on a base-level Ford Mustang and get a roomier package in the process, albeit at the expense of driving fun. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others in your area paid for their new Scion FR-S. Generally speaking, Scion cars have held their value, and the 2016 Scion FR-S should be more of the same.

Scion FR-S Overview and History

The Scion FR-S is basically the American version of the Toyota GT 86 (or Subaru BRZ).
Taking into consideration the fact that Toyota is such a large car manufacturer (the largest by latest numbers), it was bound to give birth to a whole new company to cover the huge American market. The year that happened was 2002 and the company's name was Scion. That would translate into “descendant of” derived from an old French word of Germanic origin.

Basically, what Toyota tried to do with the Scion was to appeal to younger customers and so Scion took on a more playful and direct approach to marketing its products. at the New York Auto show in 2002, the first two concepts of the Scion were introduced as the bbX (which later became the xB) and the ccX (known as tC later on).

Two more models appeared in 2004, the xA and Xb and in 2005 the tC came on the general market. The other model from the Scion line-up is the xD, launched in 2007, a subcompact which is also being sold in Japan as the Toyota ist.

Aunique feature to the Scion brand is the “Pure Price” feature which they offer customers. What that basically translates to is the real price of the car being given right from the start, including insurance and finance. Also, the trim packages in Scions are very versatile and the company boasts never before seen levels of customization.

Scion's next attempt to grab the attention of car buyers was to release limited edition vehicles with a series of limited edition accessories in limited quantities. These cars screamed for attention in more ways than one, with very loud paint jobs and bold designs.

And with a large number of accessories (whether being offered by the producer or other aftermarket dealers), starting from subwoofers, decals, canvas roofs and even a supercharger on some models, it's no wonder people rushed at the dealerships.

All that marketing seems to have paid off because sales for the xA and the XB went well and the tC also managed to make a good impression with customers. This type of aggressive marketing ensures that the average age for a Scion buyer is significantly lower than the one of a Toyota buyer (39 years for Scion for Toyota's 59).

My 3rd actually 2-FRS,1-BRZ
Great cars, fast enough to not make a fool of yourself, I just purchased my 3rd a BRZ because I refuse to buy another Toyota product do to bad dealer experiences. Hoping Subaru will be a little better, but I am already starting to doubt that do to bad purchase experience from a new car dealer. I sold the FRS with 34,000 miles only issues I had were seat being uncomfortable and bad dealer service.

"A+ Handling, Well Thought-Out Interior, Cockpit"
Very pleased with this car's excellent capabilities! Handling is great and power for its class is quite decent (200hp). I expect to see these supplanting Miatas as favorite entry-level track cars due to the wonderful chassis and balanced, predictable handling. Cockpit is simple and very well laid out - as a driver's car should be - and surprisingly roomy for a car this size; Even has a back seat and decent trunk! I bought this car for my teen son, but I truly savor the times I drive it and marvel (every time I get behind the wheel) at the kind of driver's car Toyota/Subaru have put together. I may end up getting one of these for myself to be a track day car or just a great runabout - or both!
