Kia says you should challenge the luxury you know. Well, in fact, there is good reason to check out the 2016 Kia K900. This large luxury sedan has plenty of room, quietly glides down the road and has a strong V8 engine, all for less money than the norm. Ready to learn more?

The 2016 Kia K900 is a large, limo-like luxury sedan fit for a king. Well, King James that is. As in LeBron James, the Cleveland Cavalier, and not the 17th-century British monarch who probably would've preferred a Bentley anyway. Of course, LeBron is paid to rep the K900, but he apparently actually drives one, and if quasi-regal endorsements count as a reason to buy a car, well this range-topping Kia certainly gets the job done.

However, the main reason to ponder the K900 is its value. Yes, an as-new MSRP of $ 50,000-$ 60,000 for a car made by the same folks who bring you the Rio may seem as shocking as LeBron suddenly declaring his intention to play for the Knicks. But in return for this high-for-a-Kia price, the K900 compensates with a wealth of standard equipment and interior room. No other similarly priced luxury sedan can match it for those qualities, and similarly sized and equipped flagship sedans are vastly more expensive (as in you could buy a well-equipped entry-level luxury sedan with the difference). Plus, as we discovered during our long-term K900 test, it is a supremely comfortable and quiet car that isolates its passengers from the rigors of any commute or road trip.

The 2016 K900's price tag may be eye-popping for a Kia, but this executive sedan offers many features found in vastly more expensive rivals.

Alas, there are reasons why getting a K900 rather than any of those pricier luxury sedans isn't a slam dunk. There is, of course, the badge. Kia has come a long way in this world and every one of its less expensive products is competitive and appealing in its own right. But the K900 is playing on a different court, one with all-stars from Audi, BMW, Lexus, Mercedes-Benz and others. And besides the obvious differences in brand perception, each of those brands provides superior performance, driving dynamics, interior quality, feature content and overall refinement. Take it around the block or just sit in the driver seat and it shouldn't take long to understand why the K900 costs less.

But how much less are those differences really worth? How much better is an Audi A8, BMW 7 Series, Lexus LS 460 or Mercedes-Benz S-Class, or even their respective lesser A6, 5 Series, GS and E-Class siblings that are more similarly priced to the K900? That's ultimately the question you'll have to answer, but we think any budget-savvy luxury shopper would be wise to at least consider the 2016 Kia K900. Besides, it's not every day that you get to drive the same car as a king. Well, sort of.

The 2016 Kia K900 is a full-size luxury sedan that seats five. It is available in Premium V6, Luxury V6 and Luxury V8 trim levels.

Standard equipment on the Premium V6 includes 18-inch wheels, power-folding and auto-dimming mirrors, automatic xenon headlights, LED fog- and running lights, automatic wipers, a panoramic sunroof, front and rearview cameras, front and rear parking sensors, a hands-free power trunk lid and keyless ignition and entry.

Inside you get three-zone automatic climate control, leather upholstery and interior trim, eight-way power front seats (with four-way driver power lumbar), heated and ventilated front seats, driver memory functions, a power tilt-and-telescoping steering wheel, heated outboard rear seats and a power rear sunshade. Tech equipment includes a rear USB charging port, Bluetooth phone and audio connectivity, a 9.2-inch central infotainment display (with console-mounted knob and button controls), a navigation system and a 14-speaker sound system with a CD player, HD and satellite radios, an auxiliary audio jack, a front USB port and a media player interface.

The Luxury V6 adds an upgraded gear shifter (with steering wheel paddle shifters), upgraded leather upholstery, wood interior trim and a heated steering wheel with wood trim.

Besides its bigger engine, the Luxury V8 adds 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, a surround-view parking camera system, a credit-card-sized key fob and an upgraded instrument/gauge display. Blind-spot warning, rear-cross traffic alert and a lane departure warning system are also standard.

Rear passengers are coddled by heated and ventilated adjustable seats with a substantial amount of legroom.

The Luxury V6 trim can be equipped with a VIP package that adds the V8's surround-view parking camera and safety warning systems along with adaptive cruise control, an automatic emergency braking system, a head-up display, additional front seat adjustments (12-way driver, 10-way passenger), four-way passenger lumbar and a simulated suede headliner. It also bundles the Rear Seat VIP package of power-reclining 60/40-split rear seats with ventilation, adjustable lumbar and airplane-style folding sleeper headrests.

The Luxury V8's VIP Plus package includes all that plus soft-close doors, quilted leather upholstery, wood seatback trim and a "chauffeur" switch on the front passenger seat that allows the driver to easily slide it forward for added rear seat legroom.

The 2016 Kia K900 comes standard with a 3.8-liter V6 that produces 311 horsepower and 293 pound-feet of torque. As on every K900, an eight-speed automatic and rear-wheel drive are standard. All-wheel drive is not available. The EPA estimates that it will return 20 mpg combined (17 city/26 highway).

The Luxury V8 gets a 5.0-liter V8 good for 420 hp and 376 lb-ft of torque. Rear-drive and an eight-speed automatic are again standard. The EPA estimates the K900 V8 will return 18 mpg combined (15/23). During an long-term test of a K900 with this engine, we matched the EPA's figure with 18.1 mpg over the course of 20,000 miles. In our performance testing, we timed the K900 from zero to 60 in 5.7 seconds. It's certainly a respectable time, but similarly sized and V8-equipped flagship luxury sedans are notably quicker.

Every 2016 K900 comes standard with antilock brakes, stability and traction control, front and rear side airbags, full-length side curtain airbags, and front and rear parking cameras. Blind-spot, rear cross traffic and lane departure warning systems are standard on the Luxury V8 and optional on the Luxury V6. A forward collision mitigation system with automatic emergency braking is optional on both Luxury trims.

In brake testing, a V8-powered K900 came to a stop from 60 mph in 126 feet. This is longer than average for a large luxury sedan.

Neither of the 2016 Kia K900's available engines will blow you away with a rush of power. For the respective six-cylinder and eight-cylinder classes of elite luxury sedans, the K900 is below par in terms of acceleration. That said, acceleration is certainly sufficient.

At cruising speed, the K900's cabin is nearly devoid of wind and road noise. It's one of the quietest cars we've tested recently. The ride quality is comfortable, too, and most bumps and ruts are absorbed with ease. On choppy pavement, however, the ride is a little on the busy side compared to other large luxury sedans and it is prone to some nautical-like flout over big undulations. That just doesn't happen in rival luxury sedans, which are also usually available with an adaptive suspension that adds further comfort and control to the ride.

The K900's somewhat subdued sheet metal doesn't have the same curbside appeal as an S-Class or 7 Series.

Such a suspension would also help shore up the K900's handling. As it is, the K900 perpetually feels heavy and ponderous. Pricier rivals do a much better job of hiding their size for the driver while still delivering a limo-like cruising experience for passengers.

On the whole, the 2016 Kia K900 comes tantalizingly close to matching the quality and features of the German luxury sedans it has in its sights. The interior design is pleasingly up to date with a large 9.2-inch infotainment display mounted in the middle of the dash and cues indicative of luxury brands. Options provide even more comforts, including soft-close doors and reclining rear seats.

Upon closer inspection, though, the K900 comes up short compared with established luxury sedans. Even though the Kia's available wood interior trim is genuine, its heavily lacquered and glittered finish gives it the look and feel of plastic. And while the infotainment controller is similar to BMW's iDrive interface, its complicated and unintuitive menus can be a source of frustration. The numerous buttons scattered throughout the cabin also feel a bit less substantial than we'd expect. Notably absent from the options list are amenities like a rear entertainment system, redundant audio controls for backseat passengers and seatback trays.

The K900's cabin is an inviting place to sit and be coddled, but materials quality and switchgear are not up to the standards set by competing luxury sedans.

Getting past these missteps is easy, however, when you consider the K900's long list of standard equipment and its comfortable accommodations. Spending an entire day touring the highways and byways is easy and fatigue-free for four full-size adults thanks to well-shaped seats that are heated and ventilated. Further helping to click off the miles is the powerful Lexicon sound system that offers impressive performance, regardless of your taste in music.

Cargo capacity for the K900 maxes out at 15.9 cubic feet, which is about average for the class.

The 2016 Kia K900 favors comfort over performance, so it’s a good companion for long trips. Whereas other Kias can feel a bit stiff, the K900 is borderline too soft and floaty, which means you won’t relish twisty roads in this car, thanks also to electric-assist steering that needs constant minor corrections. Selecting Sport mode tightens the steering, but doesn't improve the communication with the front wheels. Power is more than adequate, especially in V8 models. As in 2015, a comfortable driving position is easy to find, thanks to a 12-way or 16-way-adjustable seat. Controls for the climate/navigation/audio functions are easy to use. An available multi-view camera system, along with a blind-spot warning system, provides the driver with some added security.

LEXICON AUDIO SYSTEMIf there's one thing the Kia K900 does almost perfectly, it's reproduce music. This comes thanks to a standard 900-watt, 17-speaker Lexicon sound system that's been acoustically optimized for the K900's cabin. It's so fabulous that you may just drive the car as an excuse to hear it.QUIET CABINWhen you're not blissfully hearing your music library anew via the Lexicon audio system, the 2016 K900 rewards those seeking solace thanks to a cabin that feels as insulated as a Thermos.

The K900 lives up to its luxury status with a cavernous 5-passenger cabin filled with amenities. In Korea, this car is often used as livery for executives, and it's easy to see why. The rear seats boast loads of legroom, and they even have a reclining function. Sunshades afford privacy, and rear passengers can control the climate functions via a panel in the armrest. The front seats are equally comfortable, and the steering wheel has attractive wood trim. Although Nappa leather is available, it's not as soft as what the competitors offer.

The K900 takes the curvy good looks of the Optima and Cadenza, and stretches them. As such, the K900 makes an elegant statement with its 200-plus-inch length, numerous LED lights and 19-inch wheels (18-inch for V6 models). Overall, the big Kia appears sleek and hunkered-down, but the portholes on the front fenders are a bit too reminiscent of a Buick. When the K900 is parked and locked, its side mirrors automatically fold inward, helping to prevent them from getting knocked off by other cars or bicyclists.

Kia has a habit of packing even its smallest cars with amenities, so it's no surprise that its flagship K900 is full of them. Even a base K900 has the superb Lexicon audio system, a 9.2-inch command screen, heated/ventilated front seats, heated rear seats, leather and a power-operated trunk. The standard navigation/infotainment system is brought to you by Kia's UVO voice-activated system. For added safety, V8 models come with blind-spot monitoring, front and rear cameras to ease parking, rear cross-traffic alert, and lane-departure warning. The K900 also comes with three years/37,500 miles of free scheduled maintenance.

The range-topping V8 Luxury model can be ordered with a $ 5,000 VIP package that includes radar-based cruise control, a 12.3-inch LCD instrument cluster, a head-up display, power reclining rear seats, power-assisted door closing, and a snazzy surround-view camera system. Other extras include ventilated rear seats and a heated steering wheel (standard on V8 models, optional on the V6 trim).

The 2016 Kia K900 is available with a 311-horsepower 3.8-liter V-6 or a 420-horsepower 5.0-liter V8 engine. Each mates to an 8-speed automatic transmission with new shift paddles on the steering wheel. The K900 is a rear-wheel-drive sedan; an all-wheel-drive model is not available. The responsiveness of either engine can be set by the driver into Normal, Sport, Eco and Snow modes. As mentioned, the V8 fuel economy is not great, rated at only 18 mpg combined city/highway on premium-grade gasoline. The V6 fares much better, running on regular grade and returning a respectable combined EPA rating of 21 mpg.3.8-liter V6 311 horsepower @ 6,000 rpm 293 lb-ft of torque @ 5,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 18/27 mpg5.0-liter V8 420 horsepower @ 6,400 rpm 376 lb-ft of torque @ 5,000 rpm EPA city/highway fuel economy: 15/23 mpg

With a Manufacturer’s Suggested Retail Price (MSRP) just over $ 50,000 in V6 Premium form, the 2016 K900 is still the highest priced Kia today. That stated, with the exception of the Hyundai Equus, Kia's flagship sedan is priced far below the Audi A8, BMW 7 Series and Lexus LS, which begin in the mid-$ 70,000 range and climb from there. In contrast, a fully loaded 2016 Kia K900 peaks at about $ 70,000. Acura's flagship, the RLX, starts at less than $ 50,000, and Cadillac’s XTS begins in the mid-$ 40,000 range, but these are both front-drive base models. Be sure to check the Fair Purchase Price to see what others are paying for the 2016 Kia K900. This Kia is a lot of car for the money, and since the K900 is in only its second year here in the U.S., we will soon have a better handle on its resale value.

Kia K900 Overview and History

Kia sounds surprisingly playful for a car manufacturer's name and as the brand's tag line reads, they really are all about the power to surprise. In fact, the Korean car builder has done so from its very inception in 1944 when it began as a steel tubing and bicycle parts producer. Six years later, Kia would reveal Korea's first bike.

Once the first step was made, Kia rushed through the process of developing light means of transport, such as scooters and fast forwarded through motorcycle building upon the point of reaching the necessary resources and experience to start building cars. The whole conversion process took Kia about two and a half decades to complete.

Bigger, richer and propelled by the enthrallment of having their own car brand, Kia poured a considerable amount of cash into a plant to accommodate its assembly lines.  By 1973, the new facility at Sohari saw completion, becoming Korea's first of its kind. Fully integrated and equipped with the latest cutting, bolting and welding machinery, the plant ulteriorly became the womb in which Kore's first internal-combustion gasoline engine would develop. The first Kia built car was unveiled one year later, a medium passenger car named Brisa.

Kia's sounding debut and modern technology caught the eye of different foreign producers(e.g. Peugeot and Fiat) with whom it partnered to house production of some of their models such as Peugeot's 604 and Fiat's 132.

By the 80's Kia had expanded to almost the size of its main competitor, Hyundai who was still the no. 1 Korean producer. Some of Kia's newer models at the time were rebadged and marketed abroad such as the Pride which sold overseas as the Ford Festiva. Only a few years later, Ford would manifest interest in the Avella, a subcompact car available in a 5-door hatchback version and a 4-dour sedan powered by either a 1.3 or a 1.5 liter engine. The Avella was rebadged as the Ford Aspire on the North American market.

The Korean manufacturer had not yet reached US shores on its own but it was only a few strokes away. In 1992, the brand was incorporated into the US and timidly started business through a tiny four-dealership network that sold its first vehicles in 1994. Ever since, Kia has been methodically expanding, reaching every state except north Dakota.

The main selling point of Kia cars was its affordability which was later supplemented by Kia's expansion into other market segments through the introduction of their first sport utility vehicle in 1995, the Sportage. From that point on, Kia suffered a fate very similar to that of Hyundai, company it would  later blend into due to unsuccessful management of financial difficulties.

Trouble began in the late '90 when the company became stagnant and thus unable to rollout new models. That's when Hyundai came into play. The major Korean car-builder got rid of  competition by means of merger. Both companies have experienced trouble and low sales due to reliability complaints over their vehicles.

The somewhat bland styling was not exactly what buyers were looking for in a car either so both had to undergo costly restructuring stages. Kia found itself rejuvenated by 2001 when, following its owner's example, it started working on a new vehicle line-up with an emphasis on quality and long-warranty offerings. Ever since, Kia has been steadily conquering segments of the European market, especially through the Cee'd, Sorento and Rio models. The development of newer, bolder designs is also among Kia's priorities, predating a future line-up with the announcement of concepts such as the Soul, unveiled at the Montreal auto show in 2006 and the Kee, a fresh coupe boasting strongly appealing style elements.

2016 Kia K900 Consumer Reviews

Premium V6 4dr Sedan (3.8L 6cyl 8A)
Poor reliability and price for the features
We have two identical K900s that we bought in October 2016 we have taken both of the cars in since day 2 with small to large problems. Kia Motors was aware of some of the issues prior to us buying our two cars. As an example, the cruise control set speed indicator and speedometer do not match, ex. If the cruise is set at 70 mph it says you are going 75 mph on speedometer they still have no idea how to fix it from Kia Motors and its been over 4 months since I reported it. Backup camera wouldn't show picture had camera replaced. Auto Hold Brake feature on both have issues, on one it lets off the brake when it shouldn't which could make you get into an accident. Our other K900 is also having an issue with Auto Hold but it now doesn't work at all and has lights on indicating it knows there is an issue. For both, parts have been ordered to replace a different module on each respectively one a Trac module and other an ABS module, but it sounds like the Field Technician is guessing at least with the ABS module been waiting for ABS module since November 26. 2016. Trac module was ordered in late December. Fuel door doesn't open now without using manual release in trunk along with pushing the door open. Vibration, tire and alignment issues continue to be present even after multiple times of tires being replaced. Finally, overall customer service satisfaction from Kia Motors in handling my cases is Extremely Poor, I asked Kia on December 19 for a callback and even after multiple attempts to speak with upper management and for callbacks, the first time someone called me back was on January 12. I only received a callback because I had to file a BBB Autoline complaint since they never responded to my lemon law notice even after 30 days and even though I already had an open case. Also, be aware although Kia promises on their site that K900 customers should get a Cadenza or K900 loaner car don't bet on it. My dealer only has 2 loaner cars in its tiny fleet, an Optima or Sorrento don't expect to be blown away for the start of a luxury car experience. I think it is funny that the dealer employees have to be K900 certified but they don't follow Kia's rules even though they know the rules. And if you're wondering my dealer is the largest in the world so why can't they follow the rules and meet customer expectations.

Luxury V8 4dr Sedan (5.0L 8cyl 8A)
Trouble free after 43,500 miles
Car has been trouble free, other than having the tires changed to continental's, every thing works fine. Would have given a better rating except for a couple of things. No apple car play, no rear entertainment. No hud. The problem was I purchased a 2015 CPO car so got great price. Live in Arizona so wanted a light or white interior, couldn't get it with the VIP package in white interior at that time. Fuel economy could be better , but I'm getting combined better than the highway mileage listed for car. Would have been better with the VIP package After 54,000 miles, traded for a 2018 Genesis G90. I've owned 6 KIA's, sorry to leave. Kia doesn't have the new K900 out that includes everything I want hope they follow Hyundai's lead with new luxury brand. (just don't think they will) Car was great, no problems at all excellent car Wish I had a K900 with VIP. Would still be driving it if it had VIP and I would be much happier than with the G90 Every trip we take with the Genesis, something goes bad. 5 trips 5 major problems. Even the service was better at my KIA dealership Than at Hyundai dealerships. Maybe will change if Genesis has it's own dealerships

Luxury V6 4dr Sedan (3.8L 6cyl 8A)
Great car Bang for your Buck!!
Great luxury without the high maintenance cost and typical breakdowns with most luxury high-end cars. It is a reliable, sharp looking and luxury ride without worry of high cost and high maintenance bill that you would have to pay $ 4000 plus for an extended warranty for some German made luxury cars and a less expensive Japanese luxury car. An engineer at KIA from R and D said KIA buys their engines currently from Toyota. Essentially, you are buying a Lexus for half the cost.

"Still a great car for the money"
This is an update from my review a year ago, and I still feel the same about this car. For the money its an outstanding value. I have had no real issues with the car aside from the minor suspension shimmy when the tires are cold. The dealer replaced the tires for me at no charge, it helped but did not eliminate the issue. With free maintenance I have only put gas into the car and drive it. The dealer locally does a good job taking care of the car, and even though I also have never gotten a Cadenza or better as my loaner, it doesnt really bother me to drive a Sorrento or Optima. The coolest thing about the car is the body style, there are so few of these cars out there, that you will notice people stopping to figure out what kind of car it is. Again the suspension is too loose and not meant to be driven hard into twisty roads, but on a regular road or highway this car will just fly. If you can get by without the fancy name badge, this is a great car

"Amazing car!!!!"
This car is so smooth.....dangerously smooth, you will find yourself doing over 100 mph on the highway with zero noise.... be careful! This car compares to those big boys BMW, Acura etc with ease! I am 6 foot tall and need the seat all the way back, the entire back seat still has a ton of room for adults. My 12 year old says the extra deep seats in the back feel like a bed, great for road trips The quick acceleration feels stable, the car never wanders, and well those Mustang GTs you see on the road.......this soccer mom has ran away from many times!!!!! Yeah you got beat by a girl and a KIA FUll luxury. I feel for the price that the heated steering wheel should be standard (it is for the Cadenza) and the sound system could be improved a little, but I adore this car!!!!! Be prepared - I have had mine for 1.5 years and I do a lot of city driving in traffic, barely getting 21 mpg.... This is a great car!Read less
